Hope in the face of suffering
It is hard to believe that we are a week and a
half away from the start of Lent. Seems like Christmas
was just over and we are just getting into Winter, with
our first and maybe second (by the time of writing)
major snowfall of the season. To that regard, maybe
we should be looking forward to Lent and Easter, with
the hopes of Spring on their heels.
This week our first reading is from Job. You
gotta love Job! It’s a story that should be read by
everyone in its entirety. I am sure you will have a
different appreciation for Job after you read it and
then hear it proclaimed at Mass. You memory will
recall the whole story and you will reflect on the
text with a whole new mindset, I promise.
The part we hear this week finds Job lamenting about his situation. If you don’t know the
story of Job, a quick summary will have to suffice (that is until you read the complete story). Keep in
mind as you read it, that Job is a literary composition and not a transcript of historical events. The
story struggles with the perplexing and seemingly contradictory situation of the suffering of the
innocent. Or why do bad things happen to good people.
The story is about Job’s continued faithfulness in face of challenges that afflict him as he is the
recipient of undeserving catastrophes. Job’s friends struggle to identify what Job must have done to
deserve such problems in his life. Job protests, maintaining his complete innocence.
Today’s passage seemingly finds Job in a condition of lost hope. Job is pushed to his limits
but (not to ruin the ending), Job remains faithful. Job’s initial reaction to his ills is to fall prostrate.
Job questions why life needs to be so hard, but never questions the wisdom or strength of God. If
these bad things can happen to Job (an innocent man), what chance do we have?
As we approach Lent we may have similar feelings as Job as we struggle through the obstacles
that life throws in our way. We may be pushed to our limits and have feelings of hopelessness.
These struggles need not be handled in isolation and we should reach out to the community for help.
Our questions for reasons however, may seem to be at a loss, as we often want to know the reason
why.
Prayer can help us in those times, but we need to be careful of what we expect to attain. If all
we want are answers, you may feel like your prayers go unanswered. If however, we ask for guidance
and comfort, God will surely help. Jesus will walk with us through our trials, just as we approach the
season to walk with Jesus through his.
Unconditional love and support is what God is offering, and in the example of our savior, that
is what Jesus gave back and that is what Jesus shares with us.
May God Bless you and walk with you during the upcoming season of Lent.

Lent is often thought of as a time of sacrifice. It is a time to "give
up" things such as candy, bad habits, and today, maybe even the
internet. These challenges help us prepare for larger sacrifices in life.
But Lent does not have to be a time of "giving up." Rather, we can make
it a time to "give" and add something positive to our daily lives.
When it comes to almsgiving or helping the poor, the Church makes it
easy for us. We at Infant Jesus are asked to contribute alms-gifts
through our Giving, Not Giving Up Program.
During the five Sundays of Lent, everyone is encouraged to bring their alms-gifts forward at
the Presentation of the Gifts during our Sunday Masses. This act of generosity is a tangible sign of
our Lenten efforts to feed the hungry and clothe the naked.

 free pregnancy tests
 maternity housing with eligibility
requirements
medical care
referrals
cribs
car seats
diapers
and ALL other baby items that are needed.
At all masses this and next weekend,
crates will be located at the back of the Church
and Chapel to collect your Baby Bottles that you
have filled with your change collected over the
week or so. This is a wonderful project to share
with your children.

Most importantly, we are asking you to
recite the prayer on the bottle.
The prayer attached to the
bottle will enable the counselors at The
Life Center to say just the right words a
mother or father may need to hear. It
especially opens a mother’s heart to
accept the truth. We believe these
prayers lead abortion-minded women
to call The Life Center in the first
place.
