4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
From the Administrator:
Thoughts for The Week of February 1, 2015
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 1:21-28
“What Have You to Do with Us, Jesus of Nazareth (v 24).”
Jesus never directly answered the unclean spirit’s question, but He did exercise His power of it and exorcised it from the possessed man. I think every
now and then we need to step back and ask that same question of Jesus.
I think Jesus’s answer would go something like this: “I have a great deal
to do with you. I redeemed you at the cost of my life. I am with you all the
time for whenever you need me. In times of trouble I have been known to
pick you up and carry you.”
Let’s look a little deeper into this. Jesus is our Lord and Savior. He gave
us Himself in the Holy Eucharist. He gave us the priesthood so that the Eucharist is available to us today. He gave his apostles the power to forgive sins
so that we can be sorry for out sins, receive reconciliation at the hands of Jesus’s representative, the priest, and be ready to worthily receive the Eucharist.
Married couples receive the graces of the Sacrament of Matrimony sanctified by Jesus. Priests receive the power of their office by virtue to the command Jesus gave to the apostles to “do this in memory of me (Luke 22:19).”
Of course Jesus said this in reference to the Eucharist, but it could also apply
to his instruction to the apostles: “ . . . whose sins you forgive they are forgiven (John 20:23).”
Jesus is with us at times of illness and at the hour of death as we receive
the Sacrament of the Anointing. And in speaking to St. John, “Son, behold
thy mother (John 19:27), He gave Mary to us as our mother, also.
So in retrospect, I think the simple answer to our question to Jesus, “What
have You to do with us?” is “EVERYTHNG!”
God bless you. Rev. Joseph A. Emmanuel

Dear St. Joan of Arc Parishioners –
For the twelfth year, St. Joan of Arc’s Confirmation students ask for your help in raising money for charity by participating in the
nationwide fundraising event called “Souper
Bowl of Caring”. This event is held every year on the
weekend of football’s biggest game – the Super Bowl.
Over the past decade, the parishioners of St. Joan of Arc have generously donated over $7,025 and 1,125 food items to the Sloatsburg
Food Pantry which provides food for needing families in the Sloatsburg, Hillburn, Tuxedo, and Suffern areas. Collections will be held
at every Mass on January 31st & February 1st. In addition to monetary contributions, we will also accept food donations. You may
place your food donation at the back of the church. We thank you
in advance for your generous contributions – no matter what the
size – to help the students reach their goal of $900.
Your tax deductible check can be made to the order of: St.
