The American Trauma Society
Pennsylvania Division
Presents
“Back to the Basics: Tackling Trauma Together”
March 23 & 24, 2015
The Hershey Lodge and Convention Center
Hershey, PA 17033
Sponsored by American College of Emergency Physicians, Pennsylvania ACEP, The Emergency Nurses Association,
and the American Trauma Society, PA Division, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
“Back to the Basics: Tackling Trauma Together”
Every year, new challenges arise in Pennsylvania affecting all levels of care provided by pre-hospital personnel, physicians, nurses, administrators, social workers,
rehabilitation specialists and others. The Conference Planning Committee of the Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society examines these issues,
relevant to trauma prevention and care, and attempts to provide expert speakers in these areas. This year’s two-day conference, on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday,
March 24, 2015 will emphasize the basics of tackling trauma together.
Among the many highlights of this year’s conference will be the Templeton Lecture. This year’s Keynote Speaker is the 2014 Congressional Medal of Honor
recipient, Corporal William Kyle Carpenter. On November 21, 2010, while joining his team to fight off a Taliban attack in a small village in Afghanistan, Corporal
Carpenter jumped on top of an enemy hand grenade to shield a fellow Marine. As a result, he suffered severe injuries to his face, jaw, lungs and right arm, including
multiple shrapnel wounds and the loss of his right eye. Corporal Carpenter will present his first-hand account of his numerous injuries, challenges and his two year
journey to healing.
John M. Tempeton, Jr., MD, FACS and Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg will speak on the resiliency of adolescents during and after involvement with traumatic injury.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Mabry, MD will present “Reducing Hemorrhagic Shock: New Rise in Tourniquet Use - Battlefield to Street, Street to Battlefield.”
Matthew Silvis, MD will present the newest developments in youth concussions, after which Lois Blough, BSN will present “Multiple Stabbing Injury: Not What
You’d Expect in a Typical Pittsburgh High School.” Dr. Debra Malone will present a clinical case study on the battlefield injuries of Corporal Carpenter.
David Marcozzi, MD, FACEP will open Tuesday’s sessions with a presentation on how the good, the bad, and the ugly in military trauma applies to civilians.
Following Dr. Marcozzi, Robert Barraco, MD will present the newest developments in elderly trauma prevention and care. Allison Liddell, MD, Chief of the
Department of Infectious Disease at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital will present her findings on facing Ebola firsthand and the challenges in turning their
hospital into an Infectious Disease Intensive Care Unit.
Spence Reid, MD, orthopedic trauma surgeon from the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center will present the Webb S. Hersperger, MD Lecture entitled,
“Traumatic Orthopedic Injuries: Saving Life and Limb.” The Webb S. Hersperger, MD Lecture is given in memory of Dr. John Pryor, an American hero.
OBJECTIVES At the completion of this conference, attendees will be better informed about the ongoing trauma issues in Pennsylvania. Participants
will be able to:
1. Discuss the newest trends in military medicine so they are able to apply these trends in their treatment of the civilian trauma population. 2. Recognize techniques often used to attend to, engage with, and transition presenting patients from potentially debilitating injuries during their road to
recovery 3. Discuss the most recent trends in elderly trauma so that they may recognize and treat injuries in the elderly more efficiently while educating their
patients on ways to prevent falls and other injuries.
4. Identify the most recent developments in youth concussions and prevention strategies so that they are able to treat these concussions more effectively
and educate those who work with youth on how to better prevent youth concussions.
5. Identify coping techniques often used by adolescents as well as best practices in promoting adolescent resiliency after traumatic injury so they are
better equipped to transition struggling adolescents through traumatic times.
** For a complete listing of conference objectives, visit our website at www.atspa.org.
