ST. BRIGID
FEBRUARY 1, 2015
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Whole Community Catechesis
Question of the Week
Mk 1:21-28
Theme:
Authority from God
Question for Adults:
What’s in YOUR heart?
The Gospel says Jesus taught “as one with authority.”
Unlike so many through history, Jesus embodied HIS Word and
Deeds in His person. Like him, his followers do well to say what
they believe and believe what they say; to do what they believe
and believe in what they do. What “authority” would others think
of YOU in how you live your life this week?
Question for Adolescents:
What’s the difference between power and authority?
In a world full of war, power is so often seen as the
same as “force.” Or even more specifically, the power to kill. As
you grow to living as an adult disciple of Christ, what is the
power and authority JESUS claims?
Question for Children:
Who are the prophets in YOUR life?
Moses said God will raise up prophets for us—people
who help us to know God and God’s love for us. WHO are the
people in YOUR LIFE, who teach you about God’s love?

This weekend we commemorate 75 years as a parish!
In 1940 Bishop Charles Francis Buddy established Saint Brigid
as a parish and appointed Monsignor John Van Veggel as its
founding pastor. As the Pacific Beach community grew, Saint
Brigid Parish was continually blessed with dedicated
parishioners and wonderful priests, deacons, sisters and lay
staff who served the parish’s spiritual needs with great zeal and
devotion.
Saint Brigid has always been an active and vibrant
community of faith where families, both young and old, young
adults and singles could come to worship and grow in their
relationship with Jesus Christ. I am sure you join me in
profound gratitude for the tremendous blessing that priests,
deacons, religious sisters, lay staff and lay faithful have been
over 75 years to countless numbers of people in the Pacific
Beach area, the larger San Diego community and beyond.
Under the guidance of our patron, may we continue to be
blessed in abundance. Saint Brigid, pray for us!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Steve Callahan

Prayer for Vocations
During the month of February, please say the following
prayer for an increase in vocations in the Diocese of San Diego.
Lord, Jesus, we ask you to send more servants to your
people. Choose from our parishes, from our homes, from our
schools and colleges, an abundant harvest of apostles for your
Kingdom: priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay ministers.
We pray that those you call may never lose awareness of the
dignity and need of their vocation.
O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, teach to all those
the Master calls to say a joyful “yes” as you did at the
Annunciation. Amen.

an openness to letting him encounter you.” - Pope Francis
Neighbors In Need
Dinner: Monday, February 9, 2015
We are starting a New Year and look forward to your
ongoing support of our Ministry. With the longer and colder
nights, we have a continued need for your donations of socks,
shoes, jackets, warm clothing for both men and women along
with sleeping bags, blankets and cash donations. These items
can be left in the Parish Office clearly marked “Neighbors in
Need”.
Not everyone can participate in the meals we serve,
but your donations are still a very large part of the success of
our Ministry. Thank you!
I praise and thank you Lord for the demands you place
upon me. Help me to remember that I am here to serve, not be
served!

Authority From God
According to Moses, the people decided they
didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much
too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers,
prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people
had better listen to those teachers. Because they spoke in
God’s name.
That arrangement, though, had its own problems,
for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from
God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the
teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to
help us with those questions, but still there are always a few
loose ends.
That is the powerful significance of the sentence in
today’s Gospel: “ The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the
scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a
teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him.
