How wonderful it was to celebrate the end of the year with our
families and friends last Wednesday. The weather held off, just, and
all groups got to perform. The children were absolutely delightful and
so pleased to be able to share their talents with you. Thanks to the
P&C for the BBQ and to those staff and families who contributed to
the cake stall. Over $500 was raised that will go directly to our
Outside Learning Environment works next year.

Thank you to our families and friends who attended our Year 2

wonderful to be able to acknowledge all the growth and development
that has occurred during their time at Southern Cross. My thanks also
to the teaching team and to the Southern Cross team more broadly for
their efforts in putting on the event. We will miss our 2014 Year 2
children, but I know that they will continue on their amazing
educational journey at their chosen schools in 2015.
Staffing
I would like to thank Brianna Reeve and Anne-Maree Smith for their work at Southern Cross this year. They have
both made significant contributions to Southern Cross, Brianna for the last three years and Anne-Maree for 2014 and
we will miss their passion for quality early childhood education. Wherever they end up next year I know that their
schools will be lucky to have them. All the best Brianna and Anne-Maree!!!
We would like to welcome Kathryn Jeffress and Nicole Harvey to our community from the start of next year. Kathryn
and Nicole are both committed early childhood teachers and I know that you will enjoy getting to know them. They
will both introduce themselves in the first newsletter for 2015.
I am pleased to announce that Kirsty Stewart has been appointed as our Executive Teacher at Southern Cross Early
Childhood School. We are thrilled that Kirsty has won this promotion and we look forward to all that she will bring to
the position in 2015.

Building Resilience in Young Children – Part 10
This is the final part of our 10 part series about resilience from a booklet developed by the Best Start: Ontario’s
Maternal, Newborn and Early Child Development Resource Centre, Toronto, Canada. You can find more information
at www.beststart.org. The booklet was developed for parents of children from birth to six years. Many of the ideas
will also help families with older children. Some of the tips apply to all children from birth through six years. Other
tips have been given an age range that refers to general stages of child development. Please note that the age range
is only a guideline. Every child develops at his or her own rate. Whilst the booklet refers to “parents”, it will help
anyone who cares for children – like grandparents, relatives, foster parents and other adults.
Last newsletter we learnt about encouraging responsibility and participation. This final newsletter will provide a
summary of the information about resilience and resources that are available.
Summary
Resilience is the ability to get through serious life challenges and find ways to bounce back and to thrive! Everyone
has the capacity for resilience. Building resilience is something we work on throughout our lives. Parents are the most
important people in their children’s lives. They have the biggest role to play in helping their children develop
resilience. Together, with the support of other caring family and community members, you can boost your children’s
resilience through your everyday interactions and modelling.
The tables below highlights the outside supports and inner strengths that work together to build children’s resilience.
OUTSIDE SUPPORTS
Caring Relationships
Helps us feel loved, understood and accepted,
and protected from harm. Feeling wanted and
loved helps us get through the hard times in life.
Positive Role Models
Helps us see how others persevere, and stay
calm and flexible, in dealing with life’s
challenges. Children learn these life skills by
watching and copying adults.
Community Resources
Helps us when we need extra assistance in
dealing with hard times. Asking for help is a sign
of strength – everyone needs help sometimes.
INNER STRENGTHS
Self-Control
Helps us handle life’s disappointments, worries
and frustrations. It makes it easier to focus on
goals, finish what we start and wait for things we
want.
Thinking Skills
Helps us check our assumptions and find new
ways to view challenges, solve problems and get
along better with others.
Confidence
Helps us believe in our ability to overcome
obstacles and gather the courage to try new
things.
Positive Outlook
Helps us manage challenges with optimism and
hope.
Responsibility/Participation
Helps give us a sense of purpose that
strengthens and motivates us to steer through
difficulties and painful experiences.
