TODD BROWNE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR
I can’t believe it is January already! We have
made a lot of positive changes in the past few
months. Thanksgiving was a huge success!
We had over 200 people in attendance
and this was our new Executive Chef, Jake
Peeler’s, first big event here at the Club.
Chef Jake comes to us from Island Way
Grill and we are thrilled to have him. Chef
Jake has been professionally cooking now
for over 20 years. Jake graduated from
John Folse Culinary Institute in 1998.
Jake’s background is very diversified from
French and Creole backgrounds all the way
to standard Americanized cuisine. Jake was
fortunate enough to work in New Orleans
for 8 years in some great places including
Emeril’s and Commanders Palace. Again
we are thrilled to have his talents here at
Carrollwood.
Brunch with Santa was a huge success as
well, we had over 460 reservations! We did
it differently this year with staggered seating
which enabled us to serve more covers
with less stress on Santa and our members.
Thank you for all the positive feedback and
compliments.
Did you see the boat? Member appreciation
was a huge way for us to show you our love
and gratitude for all your support. There were
so many different options from the Shrimp
and Oysters to the Prime Rib. Speaking of
Prime Rib, yes it’s coming back. We will have
it every other Thursday starting January 8th.
I would also like to take this time to introduce
Chrissy Schemkes. She is our new Dining
Room Manager. We promoted Chrissy from
within because of her fantastic personality
and attention to detail. Chrissy has over 10
years of experience in the business. She most
recently came to us from a banquet facility in
Clearwater where she was the event manager.
Chrissy is also the proud mother of a 4 year
old little girl named Lily and her puppy
Daisy.
We have a lot of new and exciting things to
look forward to in the months to come.
• Tuesdays we are offering our 2 for Tuesday
special. Buy any Sandwich (Dine in Only)
and get the second sandwich for free.
• Wednesdays we will continue with our
Wine Down Wednesdays which includes
fresh pasta, three different kinds of sauce,
meatballs, shrimp and chicken cooked
right in front of you. Dinner comes with a
complimentary glass of Stone Cellars House
Wine and your choice of house or Cesar
salad for only $14.95
• Thursday Nights, Prime Rib night is back
with a twist. The Chef will hand cut it for
you in the dining room. This will start back
up on January 8th and will be on every
other Thursday from 6 to 9 pm. We will also
continue the Trivia Night series on opposite
Thursdays with the first one of the month
on January 15th and January 29th. This is
a great way to test your knowledge and eat
some great food from Chef Jake. For only
$15 dollars, you get Happy Hour pricing all
night, a fantastic buffet and a chance to truly
say “You know it all”
• Friday Nights we offer Live Music on the
patio from 7 to 9 pm.
• Saturday Nights we will be running a new
special for you. From 5 to 9 we will offer
Happy Hour pricing with ½ price Apps all
night.
• Sundays the ½ price Burger is back (Dine
in only) Dress it up any way you like it for
only $5.75!
Some other great things that are coming will
be our Super Bowl Party which will include
Food and Beer for the entire game for only
$25. (This is all you can eat and drink) We
will be showing all playoff games so come
pick out your seat and root for your favorite
team.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you
have any concerns or questions regarding
anything. My door is always open!

It’s either an Artic freeze or 80 degrees ....
that’s Florida in the winter! Well when
the ground hardens at least our balls give
us more “roll” distance and I for one
could use all the help I can get!
We would like to welcome our new
member Linda Cantwell; although she
will only be with us for 3-4 months, we
are thrilled to have her join us.
The WGA wants to thank Cheryl Stoker
and Marita Lauer for another successful
Orange Ball Tournament. The winners
for Thursday’s play were Sue Diaz, Irene
Lukasik and Sandie Peer. In second
place was Karen Bentley, Anne Hart and
Cheryl Stoker and in third place was
Anita Humphrey, Suzie Patteson and
Pat Riggs. For Saturday’s play first place
went to Bev Boas, Marilyn Connors, Liz
Lagos and Suzie Patteson. A big thanks
goes out to Pat Riggs for the Halloween
decorations and her Halloween attire
(see picture).
The match play tournament was very
exciting this year. Marilyn Conners and
Anita Humphrey played in the final for
the title of Match Play Champion and
for the privilege of having their name
engraved on the plaque in the Ladies’
Locker Room. And the winner was
Anita Humphrey! It was a close match,
congratulations ladies!
Several of our WGA ladies played in the
CCC Club Championship this year. The
Ladies winner and CCC Club Champion
is Cheryl Stoker (92-87) and in second
place was Suzie Patteson. Ladies Net
Overall Champion was Sandie Peer and
Ladies Net Runner-up was Mary Smith.
Way to go ladies – you make us proud!
On a sad note a beloved member of the
9 holers group, Mary Gettman, passed
away on 11/20/2014. Mary was an avid
golfer and bridge player at CCC and won
several club handicap championships
during her playing days.
We would all like to thank Cheryl Stoker
for organizing a Couples Golf Scramble
on December 7th. Let’s do more of
these!
Although this article will be read in
January presently the WGA is looking
forward to our Holiday Luncheon on
December 11, in the Emerald Room.
Mary Smith and her group of elves have
planned a Winter Wonderland theme
event for this year.
Hope everyone had a safe and happy
holiday. Welcome to 2015!

Friday Night at the Races is a great opportunity for CVST to get up and race some
local competition as well as see what we need to improve on heading into the
bigger meets of the season. With the Central Florida Marlins Invitational just a
few weeks later, Friday Night at the Races served as a big motivator for some of our
younger swimmers. They’re excited to be swimming fast now, but are even more
excited for what’s to come at later meets with more hard work.
One of CVST’s newest swimmers, Parker Wittnebert (5), started us off by dropping
almost 10 seconds in his 25 Backstroke to go a speedy 33.23. Following Parker was
Olivia Byrne-Garcia (8) going a best time of 28.19 in the 25 Butterfly. Olivia swam
with the boys, and though she was nervous she dropped almost 3 seconds. Another
new swimmer, John Gleason (8), swam his first meet with us and wore a smile
from start to finish in each of his four races. He can’t wait until the next meet so he
can say he dropped time too.
Tyler Bowles (14) from our Senior 2 Group dropped 3 seconds in his 100 Butterfly
to go a 1:20.75 taking first place. Also in our Senior 2 Group, Logan Ingerick (9)
went 1:13.89 in his 100 Backstroke dropping 1 second from his best time. In
our Silver/Gold Group (Intermediate level), Carly Elliott (8) swam a blazing 25
Freestyle finishing with a personal best time of 21.13. Groupmate Lauren Kenny
(13) dropped 2 seconds from her best time last month in the 100 Backstroke to
go 1:34.79. Kara Kivenas (12) went a best time of 1:19.15 in her 100 Freestyle
followed by a 3 second drop in her 100 Individual Medley to go 1:37.57. Madison
Ratchford (8) swam a quick 100 Individual Medley setting a personal best time of
1:57.27. Kaitlyn Labella (9) also swam a swift 100 Individual Medley with a best
time of 1:32.00. Brooke Lively (13) swam personal bests in three of her four events
going 1:35.78 in the 100 Breaststroke, 1:35.87 in the 100 Butterfly, and 1:24.73
in her 100 Individual Medley.
Having an opportunity to swim in a meet on Friday nights instead of practice is
a fun way to show off what our swimmers accomplish at practice every day. Our
hard work is paying off and we will continue to work hard through the winter to
really show off at our championship meets. Swimming fast at Friday Night at the
Races was a great way to boost our attitudes going into the three day Ocala Meet.
Keep up the hard work CVST!

Swimmer of the Month
OCTOBER
October 2014 - Henry Walz (12)
In October, twelve-year-old, Carrollwood Village
Swim Team star, Henry Walz swam nine events
and swam to eight best times. Henry started off the
month on October 3rd with the CVST Friday Night
at the Races where he posted best times in his 50
yard Breaststroke, 50 yard Butterfly, and 100 yard
Individual Medley. Henry went on to swim at the
Central Florida Marlins Invitation held in Ocala,
Florida on October 17th-19th, where he swam to
best times in his 50 yard Freestyle, 100 yard Freestyle, 200 yard Freestyle, 100 yard Backstroke, and
again in the 50 yard Butterfly. For the month, Henry dropped a total of 55.11 seconds with his biggest
drops coming in the 50 Fly where dropped a total of
12.40 seconds and in the 200 yard Freestyle where
he dropped 20.60 seconds. For his efforts, the CVST
coaching staff has named Henry Walz as its October
Swimmer of the Month.
Way to go Henry, and keep up the good work.
Swimmer of the Month
NOVEMBER
November 2014 - Ava Edwards (8)
The Carrollwood Village Swim Team has named
Ava Edwards of the Silver-Gold Practice Group
as the November Swimmer of the Month. For the
month, Ava dropped a total of 18.48 seconds. At
the CVST “B” Invitational held at the Carrollwood
Country Club Tennis & Aquatic Center (TAC), Ava
swam to best times in two events and followed that
up later in the month at the St. Petersburg Aquatics/
Palm Harbor YMCA Saturday and Sunday Morning at the Races held at the St. Pertersburg’s North
Shore Pool, by swimming to best times in six more
events. For the month, Ava swam to best times in
the 25 yard Freestyle, twice in the 25 yard Backstroke and @CVSTSwimming
Breaststroke, 25 yard Butterfly, 50 yard
Breaststroke, and 50 yard Butterfly and was well on
her way to aCarrollwoodSwimming
best time in her 50 yard backstroke before she crashed into the lane rope.
Way to go Ava and keep up the good work.

Tennis Tip: Learn The Sharyn Brookins Wrist Snap for a Faster Serve
Tennis players at all levels usually welcome the idea of improving their serve speed. One of
the best ways to do this is to insure the wrist/forearm of the hitting arm is moving as fast as
it possibly can. CCC Tennis Member Sharyn Brookins does this extremely well by loosening
and isolating her wrist as she serves. Here is her secret:
Keep your hand and fingers loose -- especially the last two fingers. Doing so allows the wrist
to snap (pronate), allowing the racket to travel faster as it contacts the ball. An old style
“thermometer snap” is a great image to use. One of the best at doing this at the pro level was
Pete Sampras (fig 1.). In the picture below, you can actually see Pete’s last two fingers off the
racket!
Fig #1 - Pete Sampras
Fig #2- Like a whip
Fig #3 - Shooting a
Basketball
Fig #4 - John Izner
Extend your arm above your head until your arm stops abruptly causing one body part (the
arm) to stop and another body part (the wrist/forearm) to accelerate -- like a whip (Fig 2) .
Good images for this are putting the racket on top of a refrigerator or shooting a basketball
(fig.3). One of the best at doing this in today’s game is touring pro John Izner (fig. 4). Loosen
your last two fingers and isolate your wrist -- like Sharyn -- for a faster serve.
During the months of January and February, Carrollwood Country Club Teaching
Professionals are offering free 5 minute sessions to make sure all interested tennis members
are executing this very important part of the serve as best as they can. Ask a CCC tennis
professional to help you with the “Sharyn Brookins wrist snap” today!

It’s hard to believe that the Holidays will be over by the time this article appears. Happy New
Year to All!
In the meantime, in December we were still finishing up our league seasons. Our very first 6.5
Women’s Combo League, which played on Monday’s, just finished their season and the report is
that it was a fun season and very enjoyable mixing the two levels. Our Tuesday Suncoast League
finished in the middle of the standings overall (13 clubs participate), our Interbay team (played
on Wednesdays) had a great first half, looking for an even better second half. Our ALOT league,
also played on Wednesdays, are representing CCC very well and staying competitive.
Our Men’s 8.5 Combo had a very strong first season. Entering their last match, they were tied
for first place. Coming down to the wire, tied at one match a piece, with one match deciding the
outcome, Carrollwood lost that last match in a third set deciding tiebreaker. Congratulations to
everyone for a great season.
All Leagues will continue in January and NEW in the second half of the year will be our 3.5
Ladies Night Time USTA League (more informally known as the C5’s).
A reminder....Subs are needed for all of our leagues, so please contact Chris Cary so that you may
be directed to the Captain in charge of any league you would like to sub for.
Our annual Holiday Luncheon was scheduled on December 16th, at the lovely home of Sharon
Saleh. Each year, everyone brings their favorite dish to share, a fun exchange gift, and an
unwrapped gift for a child. This is one of our favorite events (besides playing tennis of course), as
each charity we give 40-50 toys to are so appreciative, and we also enjoy the time with our tennis
friends.
Finally, our Tennis Leagues would like to wish Andy Green the best in his new adventures. We
will miss you.
Good tennis everyone.
