Winterim Catalog 2015 - Enrolled Families

 Charles Wright
Academy
Winterim Offerings
February 2015
**SELECTION FORMS ARE DUE TO THE MAIN OFFICE NO LATER THAN 3:30 PM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16th. Important Information for Students and
Parents - Please Read Carefully WINTERIM PHILOSOPHY: Winterim is a fiveday experiential program during February that encourages students to explore opportunities beyond the academic curriculum. Students participate in a variety of programs that range from community service opportunities, international or domestic trips, new skills or artistic endeavors. The program allows students to develop a variety of interests, understand cultural differences, build intellectual flexibility, and foster social and personal confidence. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS: Participation in the Winterim program for each year of attendance in the Upper School is a graduation requirement of Charles Wright Academy. The school’s goal is to have students and teachers working and exploring together outside the classroom. Family vacations or personal travel should not be planned during this week. If a student is sick and must be absent, he or she will need a note from a physician in order for the absence to be excused. Students who are sick and return with a doctor’s note may miss one day of Winterim. Make up work will be required for any late arrivals, unexcused absences, or excused absences in excess of one day. Make up work may be in the form of on or offcampus service. COMMUNITY SERVICE WINTERIM COURSES: Students are required to complete at least one Community Service Winterim course during their four years in the Upper School. A Winterim course satisfies the Community Service requirement if it includes at least six hours of community service time. THE PLACEMENT PROCESS: Selections are based on seniority, unless otherwise described in a specific Winterim course description. If a decision must be made between two or more students who have equal seniority, it will be done by random draw. For trips, there are other factors, as described below: Selection for International Trips: 1. Any specific requirements for the trip must be met in order to be eligible. 2. Seniority: Eligible 12th graders are placed first, then 11th graders, then 10th graders, and then 9th graders. The trip to Poland is the only exception, as priority will be given to 9th and 10th graders for this trip. 3. If a student has participated in one previous International Winterim Trip, that student will be dropped down one grade level in terms of seniority. Thus, a 12th grader who has already traveled internationally for one Winterim will be considered on equal footing with other eligible 11th graders, if space is available after placing eligible 12th graders. 4. If a student has participated in two previous International Winterim Trips, that student will be dropped down two grade levels in terms of seniority. Thus a 12th grader who has already traveled internationally for two Winterims will be considered on equal footing with other eligible 10th graders, if space is available after placing eligible 12th and 11th graders. 5. If a decision must be made between two or more students who have equal priority, it will be done by random draw. 6. Exceptions to these procedures may have to be made in the case of gender requirements for the trip (which may have to do with hotel accommodations, etc.) or other extenuating circumstances. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Mr. White will be the final arbiter of eligibility for trips. Selection for Domestic Trips: 1. Any specific requirements for the trip must be met in order to be eligible. Please consult course descriptions for special criteria. 2. Seniority: Eligible 12th graders are placed first, then 11th graders, then 10th graders, and then 9th graders. 3. If a student has participated in any previous domestic or international Winterim trips, that student will be dropped down to the bottom of his/her grade level in terms of seniority. Thus an 11th grader who has already participated in a domestic or international Winterim trip will be placed after all other eligible 11th graders, but before any 10th graders. 4. If a decision must be made between two or more students who have equal priority, it will be done by random draw. 5. Exceptions to these procedures may have to be made in the case of gender balance considerations for the trip (which may have to do with hotel accommodations, etc.) or other extenuating circumstances. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing, and Mr. White will be the final arbiter of eligibility for trips. SIGNUPS: Please complete the Winterim Course Selection Form and place the form in the box located in the main office no later than 3:30 pm on Thursday, October 16th. Please note that 9th and 10th graders must select six choices, two of which should not be trip offerings. 11th and 12th graders must select four choices. Pay close attention to the enrollment numbers when making your selections. This is especially pertinent to 9th graders and 10th graders, who will be placed in courses after 12th and 11th graders. WINTER ATHLETES: If your coach requires you to remain in the area, do not request a trip! You must check with your coach before you may sign up for a Winterim trip. LATE SIGNUPS: If a student turns in his/her selection form late, he/she will be considered only after ALL OTHER eligible ontime students have been placed. Please turn in your selection form no later than: Thursday, OCTOBER 16th at 3:30 to the main office of the Upper School. DEPOSITS AND THE COST OF TRIPS: If you request one or more international or domestic trips on your selection form, a deposit check for $400 must accompany the form. (If no trips are requested, no deposit check is necessary.) If the requested trip is less than $400.00, please write your deposit check for 50% of the trip. Your application will not be considered until a check is received. Please see Mr. White, Ms. Webster, or Dr. Flaskerud if you are unable to meet this requirement. If you are placed on a trip, the money will be cashed and transferred into the trip account. If you are not assigned a trip, the money will be credited to your student account. If you prefer to have your check refunded and not credited to your account, please let Dr. Flaskerud or Ms. Webster know. If, for some reason, you are placed on a trip but do not actually go, you will forfeit your deposit to help cover expenses already incurred, such as airfare. Forms must be signed by a parent or guardian, and you should consider the options carefully prior to signing up for a trip. Students should not assume that they will automatically be assigned to a trip. When making choices, please consider the cost of the offerings. In the past, students have signed up for trips but then realized they did not have the required financing. If you are selected for a trip, you will be held financially responsible for all costs. Some needbased financial aid is available to students. See details below. The Winterim Committee will be assigning students to groups and posting the lists in the Upper School by the end of October. The Committee makes every effort to provide students with one of their six choices. After lists have been distributed and Winterim groups have met for the first time, students will not be allowed to change activities. FINANCIAL AID: Thanks to the generosity of Green Derby and Student Council, Winterim has a small amount of financial aid available. The committee will work directly with the Admissions Office to determine eligibility for financial aid. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will be able to grant Winterim scholarships to students who are not already receiving CWA Financial Aid packages. The school cannot provide full scholarships but can provide up to a maximum of $600 for students who qualify. Eligible students will only be granted financial aid once during their four years. Applications for financial aid are due at the same time as selection forms and trip deposit checks. Applications received past the deadline will not be considered. Forms can be picked up in the main office or downloaded here: https://sites.google.com/a/tarriers.org/us_winterim/ Winterim Course Selection Form, 2014-2015 When are they due? No later than 3:30pm on Tuesday, October 16th. Where are they due? Turn in to the Winterim Box on Ms. Donovan’s desk in the main office. What is the penalty for late forms? WINTERIM COURSE OFFERINGS Art and Science of StopMotion Animation Instructor(s): J. Lamoreux Dates: Feb 1820; Feb 2324 Times: 9:00am 3:00pm Location: US Room 38 Cost: 30 Comm Svc Hrs: 0 Enrollment: 20 Description: Imagine writhing serpents on the head of Medusa… Skeleton sword
fighters defending a golden treasure… Bugeyed aliens invading Earth… Prior to the proliferation of computergenerated imagery (CGI) in films, one of the only means of producing “realistic” moving creatures
for sciencefiction and fantasy films was to use stopmotion animation. This was pioneered by the great Ray Harryhausen in such films as Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, It Came from Beneath the Sea, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and Clash of the Titans. In the ‘90s, Aardman Animations leaped to the fore with such fare as its
Wallace and Gromit adventures. More recently, the art and science of stopmotion has been magnificently represented by Laika, an American company responsible for such films as Coraline, ParaNorman, and the highly anticipated The Boxtrolls. In this Winterim offering, we will watch several films that exemplify the best (and worst?) that stopmotion has to offer. Inspired by these examples, and using our imaginations to their fullest, we will develop
plans for our own short films using storyboards. Smartphones or laptops will then allow us to bring into being one or more scenes from
our film to share with the entire group. Join me in this wondrous exploration of the world of stopmotion animation! Note: It is preferred that you bring your own smartphone, tablet, or laptop with videocapture capability to each day of the Winterim. However, if you do not have one of these devices, we will have laptops available. BBQ Smoking and Grilling Instructor(s): Neil Biermann Dates: Feb 1820; Feb 2324 Times: 8:303:00 Location: CWA and local BBQ establishments Cost: $75 Comm Svc Hrs: 0 Enrollment: 10 Description: Does the idea of having a smoked BBQ pork brisket sandwich or marinated and grilled lime chicken for lunch appeal to you? If so, then the BBQ Smoking and Grilling Winterim might be for you. Each
day participants will marinate (for the next day) one type of meat usually steaks or seafood, set up the smokers (alder, cherry and mesquite) with another type of meat (such as Cornish game hens or ribs) and BBQ a third type of meat (perhaps chicken wings sound nice?) While waiting for the meats to finish cooking, each individual (carnivore) will make and package his or her own distinct blends of dry rubs and sauces. Class time will also be spent learning about different cuts of meat, the importance of temperature and time during
grilling, and the best types of wood to use in smokers. The final, culminating project will be a chili cookoff. A visit to several local BBQ establishments will allow students the chance to ask questions and observe professionals working at their craft. Unlike other international Winterim trips, the Poland Exchange is open only to 9th and 10th graders. Because of scheduling set by the European participants, this Winterim will take place in the spring. Participants must be in good academic standing because they must make up all missed work, preferably before they leave or on the flight to Poland. If you’re interested in this Winterim, write a letter telling us why you would like to go and how you’ll manage in living with a Polish family. Selections will also take into account past academic performance and past hosting of international students. The cost for the trip includes transportation, museum admissions, accommodations, and most meals. If you pick this trip, please note that you will not participate in a traditional Winterim (offered in Feb) this year. *** A note to 9th graders: It is possible that the Poland Winterim will not be offered next year, as we are in discussions to change this to an everyotheryear offering. As it is only open to 9th and 10th graders, please plan accordingly for this year if you are interested in this trip. The Big Mural Project! In addition to spending a great deal of time painting, we will also spend a couple of days offcampus visiting local muralists and seeing murals all over Tacoma and Seattle. We will visit the Urban Artworks Organization in downtown Seattle to see how their public art projects have impacted the local community. Join us for an intense five days of getting our ideas down on paper, forming and revising them for maximum impact, sharing them with fellow writers and musicians, and exploring an exciting creative hub not so far from home. We’ll spend three mornings together on the CWA campus with exercises designed to get us looking closely at the world and ourselves. We’ll spend plenty of time putting those ideas down on paper, in the formats chosen by participants. During the afternoons, we’ll head out into the community to serve with local agencies. Some of these experiences may even find their way into our writing. All participants should be ready to think hard and write hard, share their pieces with others, and offer thoughtful suggestions for others’ work. Our Winterim will end with a weekend in Port Townsend, voted one of the best small towns in America and one of western Washington’s
finest centers for music and writing. We’ll stay at beautiful Fort Worden, where we’ll continue our writing workshops while also checking out some of the bookstores, small presses and cultural centers in Port Townsend. On our final evening, we’ll stage our own
Northwest coffee house, complete with literary readings and music.
