New in the Library
The Caldecott Medal is presented each year to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for
children. Two 2014 award books are among the new titles ready for checkout in our church library.
Children: Flora and the Flamingo, by Molly Idle. A girl and her flamingo friend explore their friendship
through dance. (Caldecott Honor Book)
Mr. Wuffles! By David Wiesner. A cat causes trouble for tiny aliens until they become allies of insects in
the house. (Caldecott Honor Book)
Youth: I Am Malala, by Malala Yousafzai. In this Young Readers Edition of her bestselling memoir,
hear the remarkable story of the girl who fought for her right to be educated and was shot by the
Taliban. She survived and is now an international symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest-ever
Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
The Little Chapel That Stood, by A.B Curtiss. Alexander Hamilton and George Washington were members
of this little chapel, built in 1776. Less than 100 yards from the Twin Towers, it miraculously survived
the devastation of 9/11 and became the service depot for the rescue workers at Ground Zero. This
inspiring 10 th anniversary edition for children is autographed by the author.
Adult: Belief Without Borders: Inside the Minds of the Spiritual but not Religious, by Linda A. Mercadante. A
professor of Historical Theology at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, the author has studied
the phenomenon nationally and has had in-depth interviews with nearly 100 individuals who respond to
questions about their religious affiliations with “none.” What she reveals about their beliefs is at odds
with many popular characterizations and has much to tell us about the state of religion in America.
The Great and Holy War: How World War I Became a Religious Crusade, by Philip Jenkins. At the 100th
anniversary of the outbreak of the war, historian Jenkins offers the first look at how religion created and
prolonged the First World War, revealing the powerful religious dimensions of this modern-day crusade.
illness and grief. Another shawl was given to a Mom on post who’s husband is deployed and her 2
year old daughter is getting chemotherapy treatments twice a week at Vanderbilt. Her thank you note
said, “Our family is so appreciative of your prayers, love and support. The prayer shawl is just
absolutely beautiful. Your generosity has brought me to tears!” Through the prayer shawl ministry,
Madison Street UMC was able to reach out to this family in pain in a tangible, loving way.
Prayer shawls are a comfort and blessing! They are easy to make, just straight knitting in a rectangle.
The catch is as you knit, you pray for the person who will receive it … praying for strength, healing
and hope for the recipient. Funny how the prayer also brings you, the knitter closer to God!
They are a blessing to knit, to give and to receive. I have a book of directions if you need one. Please
email Laurie Hynson or call 802-0804.
