Connecting Circles
Sunday, February 15th After Coffee Hour
Looking for more personal connections at church?
Want to further your spiritual development?
Consider joining a Connecting Circle
First Parish’s new Connecting Circles are about gathering with a small group of adults for spiritual journeying,
increasing sacred awareness, and sharing personal experiences.
Circles are structured to allow members to connect more closely with themselves and each other than can be
accomplished at larger church functions.
Two Circles are launching in March: 1st and 3rd Fridays from 7 – 9 pm, and 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 10 am to
noon. Both Circles will be held at church and will run through June.
Sign-up sheets are in the church hall. To learn more about Connecting Circles, please attend an informational
meeting in the library after coffee hour on Sunday, February 15th.
The Shared Pulpit – Thursday Daytime Sessions
Next date: February 19th
Do you have something inside you that you yearn to share with others? Are you, or have you ever thought about
becoming a Worship Associate? Do you want to support your congregation in their spiritual development?
This workshop is based on Erika Hewitt's book, entitled, The Shared Pulpit. The introduction to Erika Hewitt's
book reads, in part, "Using a series of small group meetings, this program aims to deepen connection and
trust...it contains advice, tools and a process designed to equip you to be even more skilled, confident leaders
(because anyone brave and curious enough to share their journey publicly with their congregation is, in fact, a
leader). Along the way, you'll discover your authentic voice by writing a sermon to deliver to the congregation."
This workshop will be co-facilitated by Rev. Sue Gabrielson and Rev. Lara Campbell.
We will be meeting from 9:30 am -12 pm at the Kennebunk UU church (location may change based on the will
of the group). On the following dates: 3/12, 4/2, 4/23, 5/14, 6/11
Interested members and friends of the tri-churches (Saco/Biddeford, Kennebunk and Sanford) should contact
Rev. Sue or Rev. Lara.

Next Sermon and Soup Book Discussion – 3/15/15
Rev. Lara will preach on March 15, 2015 on The Selma Awakening and her experience at the 50th Anniversary
commemoration of the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March. Those interested are encouraged to read the
book in preparation. However, all are welcome, even if you haven’t read the book.
The Selma Awakening: How the Civil Rights Movement Tested and Changed Unitarian Universalism
Editor: Mark D. Morrison-Reed
The foremost scholar of African-American Unitarian Universalist history presents this long-awaited analysis of
the denomination's civil rights activism in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Selma represented a turning point for
Unitarian Universalists. In answering Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to action, they shifted from passing earnest
resolutions about racial justice to putting their lives on the line for the cause. Morrison-Reed traces the long
history of race relations among the Unitarians and the Universalists leading up to 1965, exploring events and
practices of the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. He reveals the disparity between
their espoused values on race and their values in practice. And yet, in 1965 their activism in Selma—involving
hundreds of ministers and the violent deaths of Rev. James Reeb and Viola Liuzzo—at last put them in
authentic relationship with their proclaimed beliefs. With rigorous scholarship and unflinching frankness, The
Selma Awakening provides a new way of understanding Unitarian Universalist engagement with race and offers
an indispensable new resource for anyone interested in UU history.

New Member Recognition Sunday

signed the membership book during this church year. We look forward to formally welcoming our new
members and to enjoying cake and coffee afterwards!

encourage you to speak to a member of the Membership Committee or to Rev. Lara. You need to express your
intention to join 30 days prior to signing the book and then schedule a time to meet with Rev. Lara. If you wish
to be a part of the March celebration that would mean making your intention known by January 29, 2015.
As always if you have any questions about membership or FPUU please talk to someone on the Membership
Committee (Look for our yellow name tags at Coffee Hour.) or to Rev. Lara.

We have a Clynk deposit barrel in the kitchen. If you have more than you can carry, take home your very own
green bag. The new Clynk bags are in the black filing cabinet to the right of the stage behind the back curtain
