Elks Tale - Flemington Elks Lodge

February 2015
Issue No. 10 - 15
Hello
Here we are in February
already; the New Year is
off to a good start. One of
the first things that I must
do is apologize to the Kovi
family
who
made
a
generous donation to the
lodge in the name of
Theodore P. Kovi at the
Memorial
Service
in
December. I would have
put the information in the
January Elks Tale, but I
had already submitted my
article before the Memorial
Service.
I still have not heard if
there is going to be a
Valentine’s Day dinner around the 14th of
February. Look for a flyer or sign up sheet at
the Lodge. As I said in last month’s Elks Tale on
the 16th of February the Elks Organization will
celebrate their One Hundred and Forty Seventh
Birthday. We need to increase membership to
help keep the Elks alive. One of the ways to
help is to step up and be an Officer in your
Lodge.
On February 27th their will be a St Patrick’s day
dinner and dance. The dance group for the
Curron School and the Willie Lynch Band will
perform with Irish Beer on tap.
Details will be coming soon about the Inaugural
“Harvey Stout Shuffleboard Tournament” being
held on March 7 and 14 in the grill room. Sign
A Fraternal Organization
Our Sixty First Year
up now and put your teams
together for the tournament.
As stated in the past, crews are
needed to work Friday Night
Dinners to help the Bodnar/
Trautman crew. Please let any
Officer or me know if you are
interested in putting together a
crew.
The first Lodge meeting in
February will be run by the
PER’s it is when the new
Officers for the next year are
nominated. I hope that we
have some names that can be
nominated for Officers. Please
let any Officer, PER or I know if
you are interested in becoming
an Officer of Flemington lodge.
Without the membership increasing (instead of
decreasing) and members stepping up the
Lodge may not be around in the future. I am
proud to be a member of Flemington Lodge and
to hold the position of Exalted Ruler this year.
Remember this Lodge is only as good as the
members make it, so please step up and make
us all proud.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Veterans
Past Exalted Rulers
Alert To Veterans Residing in Hunterdon
County
The Hunterdon County Division of
Veteran Affairs is conducting a
survey to assess the needs of
Veterans in the community. I
would strongly suggest you
review this opportunity and see if it can be of
assistance to you. There are numerous ways
to access this survey form.
Members,
We have a serious situation in our
lodge, where the time is coming
quickly where we nominate officers for the Elk
Year 2015-2016 and at this point we are missing
members to fill some of the officer chairs.
Speaking for the Past Exalted Rulers
Association, it is hard to believe that out of our
membership of over 400 members we can not
get enough dedicated members to fill the officer
chairs.
Please ask yourself, what have I done for the
lodge since I became a member? If your answer
is, I really haven't gotten involved in the workings
of the lodge, then maybe its time to step up to the
plate and become involved. It really is not that
time consuming and can be very rewarding.
Please give serious consideration to our plea, for
more information contact either myself at
[email protected] or cell phone # 908797-6457 or Exalted Ruler, Barry Sheppard at
908-782-3307. We are looking forward to hearing
from you, and please don't feel that you don't
think you are officer material. The rest of the
officers and the PER Association are more than
willing and able to guide and help all of our
membership.
The next PER Meeting will be held
Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 7:30PM.

We dedicate and pride ourselves to the cause
and motto of Elks which is “So long as there
are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective
Order of Elks will never forget them”. In all, as
a symbol of our appreciation, gifts were
distributed to some 44 Veterans during this
Christmas and Holiday season. We also
patronize these facilities during the course of
the year. It may be of interest to you to know
that we have some very good Elks friends in
these care centers.
By now after 14 years, you have become
familiar with our journeys through Nursing &
Care facilities. We pursue this excellence with
the help of our Santas, PDD Bruce Totten, and
lodge Lecturing Knight Erik Anderson. Two of
our regulars were unable to join us this year,
our long term Santa, Walt Williams who was
tending to his ailing wife, Marie, and good
member Joel Wolff who has been participating
as an Elf for many years. To these gentlemen
I offer my sincere thanks.
Special Thanks to my wife Fran for all the gift
wrapping through the many years. To her, I
offer my 56 years of loyalty (oh my).

----------------------------------------------------------------Army of Hope
I hope everyone had an
enjoyable Christmas, Hanukah
and a Happy New Year. Your
committee collected thank you,
get-well, holiday and Christmas
cards during December from our local schools
and sent them to our troops rehabbing at
Walter Reed National Military Hospital,
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in
Germany and to Bagram Airfield in
Afghanistan. These reminders of what our
children and grandchildren think and wish for
our troops is welcomed by those recipients that
are away from their loved ones during the
holidays while serving our Country. Anyone
that would like to collect thank you and get well
cards from their community neighbors,
churches,
synagogues
or
service
organizations, I would be happy to give you
APO addresses of our troops to send them.
They LOVE hearing from those of us that are
stateside and appreciative of their efforts and
sacrifices. I will be sending Valentine’s Day
cards to them by the time you read this article.
Once the Americanism essays are graded,
those not moving forward to the district level
will be sent to our troops for their enjoyment.
The State Committee spent a total of
$78,250.00 in commemorative wreaths, gift
cards and checks to our Fallen Hero and
severely Wounded Warriors families for their
Christmas Holidays.
On another topic, Our lodge is in dire need of
leadership for the 2015-2016 Elk year. I bring
this up because all the charitable work that this
committee and all others do will die without
member(s) willing to become officers of this
lodge. Without an Exalted Ruler this lodge, by
Grand Lodge Statutes, will cease to exist. Our
legacy of charitable work within our
communities, district and state, parade
trophies, veteran’s assistance, special needs
contributions, Ritual pride and the great times
at the Charity Balls, Elkoberfests, Shuffleboard
league, Friday Night Dinners and Pasta nights
will be a distant memory. We will become
another statistic of Elkdom in the West Central
District along with Franklin Park, Washington,
Phillipsburg and Somerset Hills…IS THAT
HOW WE REALLY WANT TO BE
REMEMBERED ?
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS, VETERANS
AND THEIR FAMILIES
Bruce R. Totten – PDD,
Army of Hope Chairman
Americanism
Wishing everyone a Happy New
Year and reminding all that
Spring is only a couple of months
away.
We will be reading, grading and sending the
top Americanism essays on to the district level
at the end of the contest period. All the essays
that we receive will be sent to our troops
overseas as a morale boost. The 5th through
8th grade students have written very touching
essays that are very appreciative of our
American dreams and heritage. This year’s
topic, “What does the Pledge of Allegiance
mean to me?” will be no different.
What is more significant to showing your pride
in America than displaying and/or flying the
American Flag. We, as Elks and American
citizens, should be first and foremost in
showing that PRIDE. After 9/11 you could not
travel far throughout any area without seeing
the American Flag in the fronts of homes,
stores and displayed on various motor
vehicles. We need to get that PRIDE and
LOVE back and show others that we have not
given up on those principles that made this
Country great. Too many of our men and
women serving in the military have fought and
died since 1776 trying to keep those principles,
that this Nation was born, from being taken
from us.
Nostalgia Time: I remember when there was a
waiting line to be seated for Friday Night
Dinners and Pasta Night would fill the room
with overflow going into the Grillroom. I
remember 30-40 people attending lodge
meetings and a constant flow of people at the
lodge on any given night.
I remember
members willing to assist the betterment of the
lodge by becoming officers or committee chairs
to enable our lodge to exist and all our
charitable programs to flourish. Times have
changed to where now we cannot find
members willing to become officers or
committee chairs and the attendance at
meetings has become a disgrace. If we do not
change the path that we are on this lodge will
cease to exist in the not too distant future. So,
if the smile on a special needs child’s face that
WE HELPED or a tear in the eye of a veteran
that WE REMEMBERED doesn’t affect you the
way it does me then….
Be PROUD, Fly your AMERICAN FLAG
Bruce R. Totten – PDD
Lodge Americanism Chairman
