Issue 23
Principal’s Corner
Happy February 2015. Catholic Schools
week was a terrific celebration for Holy
Family. We celebrated with wacky hat day,
the Bishops Mass with Visitation, the
spelling bee, spirit day, grandparent’s
Lunch, the talent show, and the ice cream
party. The students displayed multiple art
pieces, essays, portfolios, and multimedia
presentations. The creativity and mediums
of expression from our students was
impressive.
The last weekend in January also brought
an end to the boy’s basketball season. I
would like to send a special thank you to
Dave Woll for coaching the 7th grade
boys, Daren Spomer for coaching the 8th
grade boys, and “Coach” Pete Cyphers for
coordinating and supervising the season.
Coach Woll and Coach Spomer donated
their time and talent. The Holy Family
Community is grateful for their
contribution. Our young men have grown
because of their generosity. I will
personally miss watching them practice and
compete; it has been one of the highlights
of my year.
I came across the following statement
from Douglas MacArthur:
“Last, but by no means least courage –
moral courage, the courage of one’s
convictions, the courage to see things
through. The world is in a constant
conspiracy against the brave. It’s the ageold struggle – the roar of the crowd on one
1
side and the voice of your conscience on
the other.”
Bishop Steven Berg spent some time with
the 8th graders during his visit. He spoke
with the students about having the
courage to quite the noise in their life in
order to find and hear Jesus. He also
spoke of having the discipline to set aside
some time to reflect and listen to Jesus
speaking with them through their
conscience.
Bishop Berg talked about how he would
use exercise to meet Jesus. He would jog,
swim, and hike to help his body feed his
mind and spiritual development. Bishop
Berg is very committed to Holy Family and
is working to build a personal relationship
between the school and himself.
Thank you to the scores of parents that
helped with the Spelling Bee and
grandparents’ lunch. Your efforts were
essential as you helped turned chaos into
organized chaos. Thank you Mrs. Gipson
and Mrs. Segrest for coordinating the
Talent Show. Parents, board members and
volunteers are true ambassadors to the
HFCS mission. It is my privilege to guide
such an outstanding learning community.
Please keep in your prayers:

The Intermediate Spelling Bee
had us all on
the tip of our chairs this year! We enjoyed watching three
superb spellers tackle word after word. Miranda Deeths,
Sophia Feghali, and Emma Corsi made spelling look like a
"piece of cake." Mrs. Jamsay would like to thank Domenica
Marsala, Angie Allen, and Lori Burnhart for judging our
wonderful contestants! Everyone who participated did a fine
job. A special acknowledgment goes to our alternates who
studied words for two weeks but did not actually get to be in
the contest.
Congratulations to the Middle School Spelling Bee winners:
1st place: Melissa Weber
2nd place: Alesia Yanowich
3rd place: Logan Tarman
Any student who wishes to compete in the District Spelling
Bee is welcome to participate. The top six finishers are
invited to the state bee in Denver. The district bee is on
Saturday, February 21, at East Middle School. If you are
interested, please see Mrs.Deagle prior to February 21.

WE Create Change - WE Make A Difference
WE (middle school students) have decided to collect spare change for goats for Free the Children communities in Kenya.
Students will be outside at the drop off areas and at various functions throughout Catholic Schools Week. Collection jars will
also be available in the office, the computer lab and in various classrooms in case you miss the before school collection time.
Bring your spare change and help us make a difference!
Free the Children works with communities to create sustainable development. Their program, called Adopt a Village, is a
unique five pillar program which addresses all the common obstacles to children being educated. Free the Children not only
builds schools but also addresses clean water and sanitation, health issues, alternative incomes and agricultural and food
security. We have decided to do our part by providing at least 8 goats. Each goat costs $50. We are asking you to help us by
contributing those stray nickels, dimes and quarters laying around in your cars or on your kitchen cabinet. Just a little can go
a long way toward making a difference!
Why goats? A goat can make the difference!

With Thanksgiving and Christmas now over, the Grand Junction
food bank finds itself struggling to keep up with demand.
Primary will be holding their annual Valentine’s food drive
called “Boxes of Love.” It would be wonderful if we could send
some boxes to the food bank filled with non-perishable goods such as cans,
cereal, granola bars, etc. and perhaps a few treats for children. Please
help us in this project by sending in anything you can spare by Friday,
February 13th.
All food can be delivered to the boxes outside Mrs. Whitcomb’s classroom
or in the main hall outside the office.
We are all so blessed and receive so much. This is one of the times when
we focus on the hardships that others are experiencing and it is a great
opportunity to give back o this beautiful valley that we all love.
Last year we collected an astounding 1,668 pounds of food and the folks
at the food bank were thrilled. Let’s see if we can beat this amount this
year.
As always, thank you for all your help and support,
