JANUARY 2015 - Village of Bellwood, Illinois

january 2015
Message From
Mayor Frank A. Pasquale
all the very best in 2015!
As the New Year unfolds, on behalf of
the village clerk, Board of Trustees and
my entire administration, we wish you
Last year was a challenging but rewarding one, and your support
continued to make this village a fine community for all of our
families. Thank you for your active participation in our events as
we look forward to moving Bellwood ahead.
For those of you who attended our Breakfast With Santa event,
which always is a highlight for our children and families, it was
spectacular and filled with holiday cheer and performances by
O
“Cupcake’s Family Fun Time Clowns” and a surprise appearance
by Santa Claus. Don’t miss the pictures in this issue.
For their enthusiastic support of our many holiday activities, I
want to personally thank George Angellilo of G.A. Paving; SaveA-Lot Supermarket; Sam Scarlato; Frank Angellilo of Independent
Paving Company; Janel Moreland and Diane Salemi of Pan
American Bank; Bob Nielsen, Howie Mulford, Kathy East and
Marcy Johnson from Henry Bros. Co., and their subcontractors
Edon Construction, O’Hare Mechanical, Shamrock Electric and
Oosterbaan Painting; Bellwood Lion’s Club; Ted Steiskal;
Sure Built Manufacturing’s Tom Fahey; as well as our
department heads.
Residents Gain At Christmas Basket Giveaway
n Dec. 22, Bellwood hosted its Annual Christmas Basket Giveaway, which is a tradition
that helps needy families during the holiday season. Through the generosity of a
number of local businesses and individuals, 350 baskets were presented to residents.
Bellwood Mayor Frank A. Pasquale and Village Clerk Lena Moreland agreed, “It really shows
what can happen when you band together. Individually, we can accomplish a lot, but by working
together as a group we can accomplish even more.”

Breakfast With Santa Enjoyed By Young And Old
Children and adults look forward to the popular annual Breakfast
With Santa event that features a scrumptious breakfast and live
entertainment. And this year was no different at the 12th annual
gathering on Dec. 13 at the Best Western Hotel in Hillside. More
than 300 guests were treated to a performance from “Cupcake’s
Family Fun Time Clowns” and Ole St. Nick greeted the children –
old and young – and heard their last-minute Christmas wishes.
Highlights From Senior Club’s Christmas Luncheon
Lunch for about 40 senior citizens was provided to members of the
Bellwood Senior Club, which is a community service organization that
meets each Wednesday. The seniors enjoyed food, fun, seasonal
festivities and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.
How To Prevent
Frozen Pipes
Your water service line is how
water is delivered to your
home from the village water
main. The depth of the water
service line will range from 4’
- 5’ below ground. The normal
frost line averages 18” - 3’ deep
in the Midwest. In the case of
sub-zero temperatures, the frost
line can average 4’ - 5’ below
ground.
For any pipes that you may have in outside walls, crawl spaces
or exposed to drafts, thorough insulation is essential! This can be
done by wrapping pipes with electrical heat tape. If your water
service line and pipes are not frozen and a deep freeze seems
likely, the most common home anti-freeze remedy is to keep a
faucet in the house running constantly. If this is not done, your
water service line may freeze. If that should occur, the Village of
Bellwood Water Department cautions you not to use fire or
electrical appliances, blow torches, etc., because homemade thaw
efforts are dangerous remedies. Homeowners have been known to
burn their homes down while attempting to thaw out frozen
water lines.
We urge you to contact a reputable plumbing company or a comparable firm specializing in thawing out water service lines. This
work is performed with a high voltage arc welding unit. The water
meter and ground wire must be disconnected before work is performed. The average charge for such work is approximately $75
- $150 an hour and most firms operate 24 hours a day seven days a
week, including holidays.
If you have questions or concerns, call the Bellwood Water Department Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at (708) 547-3542.
