Last November on the First Sunday of Advent,
Pope
Francis
inaugurated
a
yearlong
observance of Consecrated Life. It will continue
till next year around this time. Unfortunately it
did not get the coverage in the media that
other proclamations have received, but it is
certainly something we should be aware of.
The term consecrated life refers to men and
women who have taken vows and live in a
religious community. They have been an
integral part of the church since its inception
and today they are working diligently to adapt
their particular ministry to the needs of the
contemporary church.
Those in consecrated life have a different
vocation from those of us who are diocesan
priests. A diocesan priest makes two promises;
celibacy where he gives up the right to
marriage and a family, and obedience to the
bishop of the diocese meaning he will go where
he is assigned. A man or woman in consecrated
(religious) life usually makes three vows;
poverty
by
renouncing
ownership
of
possessions, chastity giving up the right to
marriage and family, and obedience to the
superior or designated person in charge of that
community. Some religious communities may
take an additional vow that is particular to that
community.
Statistically,
religious
communities
are
changing. The median age is high and the
number of members working in full time
positions to support the community is not as
many as needed. Like the rest of society there
are increasingly more elderly members of the
population and so there is a strain on social
security and Medicare benefits.
The good news is that there are people today
interested in joining religious communities.
Traditionally there have always been young

people right out of high school who want to
enter, but the trend today is for people to
complete college before being accepted. This
helps a person have a longer period to discern
a vocation, but also adds a maturity factor of
life experience. The downside of this is that
these people are applying with college loans
that need to be paid off and religious
communities do not have the funds to meet
those payments. Setting up a viable plan of
action can be a challenge. This is the work that
Father Greco does with the men seeking to
enter his Franciscan community and he works
very hard to enable a potential candidate to be
given the opportunity.
Pope Francis wants us to think about the part
that these religious men and women have
played throughout our history. They are the
ones who built hospitals, schools and
orphanages when no one else was doing it.
They invested their assets in helping people
and were willing to live a life of simplicity and
sacrifice to do so. We owe them a tremendous
debt.

of St. Blaise and it is our tradition
to bless throats in his honor. The
blessing will be available at Mass
at 8:00AM, 9:00AM and at
5:00PM in the Church.
The Archdiocese of New York Men's
commission is hosting the First Annual
Men's Conference on Saturday, March
21, 2015, at Fordham Rose Hill campus.
The speaker will include Cardinal Dolan,
Damon Owens, a renowned public
speaker, and Joe Klecko, former all-star
New York Jets defensive lineman.
Admission is $45.00 and includes
breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.
