note
In the Arab world the ‘majlis’ is synonymous with
discussion and debate. Today the global majlis is
redefined by the internet - and its amplification of
geography and reach is unprecedented!
While Twitter delivers concise morsels of
information, Facebook is probably the de facto
enabler of broad, spontaneous, and often inane,
conversation. But it also has the power to facilitate
deeper discourse and the meeting of minds.
While most Facebook users limit their engagement
to family and close friends, others, like me,
appreciate the expansiveness of the platform.
I like talking to people from different backgrounds.
I contribute to debates about current affairs, and
occasionally even offer my two cents worth to
idiotic discussions about stupid nothings. So while
I value the views of my ‘inner circle’, I also like
to hear the opinions of those who have different
outlooks on life.
Tempo has always been a forum for the exchange
of ideas; bringing people together, celebrating
diversity, and championing enterprise, initiative
and optimism. You will find such stories in our
pages this issue; stories of people in our community
who are following their passion in business, design,
music, fashion and social responsibility.
I’m including the Tempo creed at the side for those
who haven’t seen it before. Let us know if you’d
like a poster of this and we’ll be sure to reserve one
for you. Order it through our Facebook
group ‘Tempo UAE’.
If you have something to share, talk to us. Reach
out to the Tempo team or drop me an email…We
love to hear from you!
Dream big, and ‘just do it’!

A MESSAGE OF PEACE
By Vanessa Middleton
I
n an effort to keep an
optimistic outlook to
achieve world peace; we
must commit to enhancing
cultural and social
understanding as we enter
2015. We should seek to
promote understanding
and raise awareness of the
rich, diverse cultures we
experience working and
living in UAE.
Did you know that there is a sizeable
population of ‘Black Americans’? What
is a Black American? According to the
US Census Bureau, “Black or African
American refers to a person having
origins in any of the Black racial groups
of Africa.” Sounds simple enough, but
due to the legacy of slavery - most
African Americans don’t know where
their African origins are from. Slavery
was designed to intentionally ensure the
deconstruction of the cultural memory;
to perpetrate the forced and free labour
provided by masses of Africans abducted
and transported from Africa to America.
Overall, the Black experience in America
is very unique. Refer to the map to see
the origin of Africans and The African
Diaspora during slavery circa 1500-1900.
Black History Month is celebrated in the
US throughout the month of February.
It was first established in 1926 as “Negro
History Week” to celebrate and raise
awareness of the significant contributions
of Black Americans to America.
An iconic figure, a Black American leader
who is celebrated during Black History
Month is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He
promoted a vision of world peace and
human understanding. As a champion for

What are your plans for the month of ‘love’?
peace, he provided a voice for the voiceless
masses of Black Americans oppressed by
institutional racism, discrimination and
segregation laws. In the US, each year
January 19th marks the national holiday
celebrating King’s pioneering commitment
to improving civil rights; not just for Black
Americans but also poor whites, and other
communities within the country.
Leader of the African-American Civil Rights
Movement, Martin Luther King Jr.
notes

The inequities of labour, economic
opportunity and social well-being
were really challenging for many Black
Americans seeking access to the same
“American Dream” afforded their fellow
“White” American citizens. King’s
passionate dedication to non-violent
strategies to achieve this inequity was
remarkable. In one speech he said, “an
individual has not started living until he
can rise above the narrow confines of his
individualistic concerns to the broader
concerns of all humanity”. Let us all be
empowered by his vision and his words of
wisdom and peace.

Sweet Tea Lyrics
Have you performed in public before?
Yes, some school talent shows, open mics and small events.
She was born in a teacup,
She was brought up
with nothing but sugar sweet tea,
No one could warm up, her ceramic cold soul,
And inside her sat beating a black piece of coal,
Have you ever mixed up your music with other genres?
I don’t really know my genre, but my brother, who studies audio
engineering in Cape Town, has mixed some of my songs. They
include psy trance music and such.
What are your favourite music genres?
All types! I love Barbra Streisand, The Growlers, Fleetwood Mac,
Cat Power, CocoRosie, Devendra Banhart, Elvis and many more!
(Oh ghosts, ghosts, ghosts were her friends
and they were hosts, hosts, hosts ‘til the end)
On a swing she swung, and next to her, was an unsung
lung
(Oh ghosts, ghosts, ghosts were her friends
and they were hosts, hosts, hosts ‘til the end)
Ghosts they never sleep, they’re never tired,
they don’t talk back, cause they’ve died

SELMA
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
Review by Nishat Ahmed
Review by Esraa Mohamed
Oscar-nominated film ‘Selma’ narrates the story
of Martin Luther King and the difficulties of
the African-American community during a
three-month period within the year 1965. David
Oyelowo stars in the leading role as Martin Luther
King Jr. – the leader of the freedom-fighters of his
community. The film co-stars Carmen Ejogo, Tom
Wilkinson, and Oprah Winfrey in supporting
roles among others. As the film progresses, movie
goers learn more on the historic moment of the
march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama that
ultimately lead to the signing of the Voting Rights
Act of 1965. The film doesn’t just show Martin
Luther King’s central accomplishment – it also
shows the hardships that he and his community
had to endure during that period of time.
Oyelowo’s acting prowess shows the greatness
of Martin Luther King Jr. when it comes to leadership even when posed with threat
against being stereotyped as violent people by those who are outside his community.
He also faces the adversity within his group with much fervor. He shows his headstrong
will to lead this dangerous campaign despite all of the odds. The film promotes equality,
democracy and unity in all its entirety and is a must-watch for people of all races who
want to have a sense of union after they leave their seats.
The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British
biographical romantic drama film that has
already won plenty of awards. Film stars Eddie
Redmayne and Felicity Jones with Charlie Cox,
Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, Christian
McKay, and David Thewlis in supporting roles.
However, Eddie Redmayne transforms himself
into Stephen Hawking in an extraordinary way.
Most of us are familiar with the wheelchair-using
Hawking who suffers from a rare, early-onset,
slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease,
that gradually paralyses him over the decades.
He currently communicates using a single cheek
muscle attached to a speech-generating device.
Redmayne turns himself into Hawking over the
movie, until the resemblance is quite uncanny.
The film covers the three areas of Hawking’s life;
his work, his illness and his marriage. From early as a student, Redmayne displays his
genius. Later, Redmayne shows the progression of the disease with considerable artistry.
The chemistry between Redmayne and Jones is indisputably explosive; in all stages of
the characters’ lives. They permeate the screen with an elegance and a sophistication
reflecting a timeless tale of love and deep friendship. The film is a biographical romantic
drama film with stunning actor performances. “The Theory of Everything” is a very
accomplished and emotional work of cinema.

‘Orchestra of the Year’ by a panel of 50 international
music critics in 2013. This follows a recognition for the
orchestra’s principal conductor Christian Thielemann,
who was named ‘Conductor of the Year’ by an
international jury two years earlier. The challenging
programme set for the UAE capital debut concert reflects
the significant talent of this exceptional orchestra.

THE EVIL WITHIN REVIEW
THIS MONTH’S GAMER PICKS
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Platform: 3DS
Status: Release in Feb 2015
As with the previous series, players take
on the role of a hunter: finishing over
hundreds of quests from towns that you’ll
visit along the way as you gather goods and
slay monsters from small critters to large
dragons. If you have been closely following
the Monster Hunter series, you’ll be
delighted to know that the latest version in
this series now offers that feature everyone
has been waiting for: Online Multiplayer
capability. While the local wireless option
is still available, this online multiplayer option would now enable the fans to play with
their friends no matter where they are within the globe. Other new features include
two new weapons, vertical and lateral movement, a more fluid climbing motion and the
mount feature where you get to ride
atop certain monsters.
Ever heard of a little game called Resident
Evil? It was developed by Shinji Mikami,
considered the pioneer of the survival
horror genre. He’s the mind behind the
nightmarish vision of The Evil Within, so
this is no lightweight title.
Firstly, this game is a cross between Dead
Space, The Last of Us, Alan Wake and of
course Resident Evil. But since Mikami is
the inspiration behind survival horror he’s allowed to borrow.
THE STORY
TEW is a blend of psychological horror
and gore with intersecting storylines and
mystery mixed in. You play Sebastian,
a detective with a wounded past who is
trying to find the truth behind his personal
pain, as well as a string of brutal slayings
within Krimson City - centering around
the city’s mental hospital and a local
family of ‘blue bloods’. The story slowly
unravels through newspaper articles,
audio recordings and visions of past events.
Though Sebastian’s story and the villain’s
seem unrelated, one can’t help but feel
there is some connection between them.
It is the gradual revelation of truths that
contributes to a well told story.
THE SCARES
from a twisted, long haired six armed
indestructible female monster is as creepy
as it gets. Further is the sense of isolation,
lightless environments and sounds of
unknown origin. The scariest moments
aren’t the monsters themselves, but the
moments when you simply have no idea
where you’re going or what will happen entering a dark room and wondering why
you would even want to do this, certain
that it will not end well. It usually doesn’t.
That said, it’s not a revolutionary game, but
it’s probably one of the best of last year.
Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse
Platform: Xbox One, 360,
PS4, PS3, PC
Status: Release in
Feb 2015
You’ve seen the anime - now you get to play
as the characters themselves in tons of epic
clashes that never gets old. Watch as you
get to relive and fight the matches between
Goku and Frieza, Gohan and Cell, the Z
Fighters and Majin Buu and much more
with stunning updated graphics tailored for
the next generation of consoles. Now let’s
raise our hands to form that Genki Dama and release that Kamehameha!
GAME PLAY
Third-person view, it’s strongly
reminiscent of Dead Space - the HUD
doesn’t stop the action, only slows it down
- so this makes battles really frenetic. You
have a system for upgrading weapons
through a save/home station, and while
I was playing on the hard setting (you
unlock the survivalist by completing the
game in hard), I can’t say it was a really
super challenging game. There were times
I was out of ammo, but you’ll always find a
convenient box of bullets nearby, and there
is usually a system for killing an enemy
that makes things a tad easy. The pacing is
great with a range of challenges including
outright battles, some agility tests, puzzles
and my favorite: stealth levels.
Yes there’s a ton of jump scares and gore,
All in all, this cross-platform game is well
but it’s the disturbing nature of the gore
worth it, if you love to be scared
that really gets you. The idea of wading
through rotting flesh and blood or running outta your PJs.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Episode 1 and Episode 2
Platform: Xbox One,
360, PS4, PS3, PC, PSN, XBL
Status: Release in
Feb 2015
Step in the shoes of fan-favourite Claire
Redfield, survivor of the Raccoon City
zombie incident who now works for Terra
Save, an anti-bioterrorism organisation.
Together with Moira Burton, daughter of
Resident Evil legend Barry Burton, get to see
for yourself if they would live to tell the tale
of their survival this time around against thousands of enemies called “The Afflicted”.
Stranded in a dark and abandoned detention facility with only limited ammo and
supplies available, fans and new players alike will get to enjoy this story filled with lots
of twists and turns in its four scenarios.

SCOURING THE INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (CES 2015)
The International CES is the world’s
undisputed gathering place for
all who thrive on the business of
consumer technologies. Held in Las
Vegas every year, it has served as the
proving ground for innovators and
breakthrough technologies for more
than 40 years— it is the global stage
where next-generation innovations
are introduced to the marketplace.
Dell XPS 13 (2015)
Here’s an overview of some of Tempo’s
hot picks…
Delphi’s Computer Chauffeur
It’s not truly borderless but the difference between this
and the previous-generation XPS 13 is striking, and the
same can be said when comparing this to any other
high-end 13-inch laptop or hybrid, from the MacBook
Air to the Yoga 3 Pro. This allows the chassis to be
smaller than other 13-inch laptops, fitting a 13-inch
display into the same body size as an 11 or 12-inch
laptop. This is an important laptop for more reasons
than just the thin display bezel; it is the first laptop with
one of Intel’s new fifth-generation Core i-series CPUs,
also known by the codename Broadwell.
In Audi’s boldest self-driving experiment, it sent its
A7 model-based research car from San Francisco to
Las Vegas, covering 550 miles. The car piloted itself on
highways, but required a human driver to take over in
cities and towns. Automotive supplier Delphi showed
off its new Drive platform with a self-driving tour on
the crowded streets of Las Vegas.
Windows 8 in the palm of your hand
Amid all of the laptop and PC news that’s come out of
the 2015 International CES, the quiet announcement of
Intel’s diminutive Compute Stick comes as something
of a surprise. It has tablet hardware and plugs into an
HDMI port, offering a PC experience in a tiny space.
The Compute Stick comes in two versions: an $89 Linux
version, and the $149 model that’s running Windows
8.1 with Bing.
First SLA 3D printer for the masses
LG G Flex 2 the Second-gen
curved smartphone
Doubling down on its uniquely bowed G Flex
smartphone, LG unveiled its successor, the aptly named
G Flex 2, during a CES 2015 press unveiling. Equipped
with a 5.5-inch touchscreen that has a 23 degree arc, the
device will initially launch in Korea later this month
with other countries following.
If traditional 3D printers, such as the Da Vinci 1.0
AiO or the Ultimaker 2, are too slow for you (and
they do take a long time to create an object!), there
are 3D printers that use Stereolithography Apparatus
(SLA) technology that are a lot faster. These printers,
however, have been cost-prohibitive for general
consumers until now, thanks to XYZ Printing. The
maker of the Da Vinci unveiled at CES 2015 its first SLA
3D printer, the Nobel 1.0. It’s the first on the market to
retail at $1,499, which is significantly less than other
3D printers.
Sony TV is thinner than your phone
Just when you thought TVs were thin enough,
Sony dishes up a little something even slimmer. The
company is calling its new XBR-X900C the thinnest
LCD TV yet. Parts of the TV’s cabinet, namely the top
half of the set, measure just 0.2-inch thick. That’s just
7.1mm, thinner than an iPhone 6 for example. The fact
that the bottom half is a bit thicker to accommodate
internal components and inputs, spoils the effect only
a little.

THE LUXURY ARCADE
T
he Luxury Arcade is
a fashion secret that’s
hidden from plain sight.
Tucked into one of the
winding corners of World
Trade Centre Mall on the
first floor, the tightly curated
concept store carries a taste
level and adventurousness
that’s quite uncommon
in the capital.
The Luxury Arcade is known for its collection of chic clutches,
like these pop art-inspired handbags
Tempo talked to store founder Lina
Mustafa—and as it turns out, the owner is
just as fascinating as the clothes she sells.
At only 24 years old, the Palestinian-born,
Abu Dhabi-raised fashion creative is also
a former designer whose avant-garde
creations have been inspired by style icons
like Lady Gaga and Nicola Formichetti.
She says she’s rigorous in the way she
curates her fashions. “When looking
for items for the store, I go to Paris to
the showrooms and buy their pre-fall
and resort collections. I prefer going to
showrooms rather than attending
trade shows.”
With its classic Chuck Taylor silhouette, these studded sneakers
add downtown cool and punk-rock edge to weekend wardrobes
With a high to low mix of under-theradar menswear brands like Umit Benan,
established womenswear players like Peter
Pilotto, and cult figureheads like Damir
Doma, The Luxury Arcade caters to the
young, hip, and fashion conscious. Middle
Eastern brands are carefully represented
here, too. Think streetwear from UAEbased House of Nomad, dresses from
Madiyah Al Sharqi, and glittery clutches
from L’AFSHAR.
Lina discovered her passion for fashion
early on. “As a student, I became more and
more interested in the business side of
fashion, even more than the design side. So
when I moved back from London, I was 22
and just went for it. I’ve also always been a
compulsive shopper, so to buy for a
living is incredible.”
Lina Mustafa, 24,
owner of The Luxury Arcade
She added, “I studied fashion design at
university so I love to know the concept
behind each line, the inspiration, and
everything behind it. I think these are the
sort of stories that you only get when you
build a relationship with the people who
make the brand happen”.

MEET OMAR
By Neil Bie
If you ever go out for lunch
with Omar Al Busaidy, the Unit
Head of Abu Dhabi Experience
Development of Tourism and
Culture Authority, be prepared for
frequent interruption by people
who approach him with hugs,
kisses and high-fives. When Tempo
chatted with Omar, he shrugs off
the attention, his eyes shining as he
talks about his new book
“Just Read It.”
Tempo: How would you describe
Omar Al Busaidy?
Omar: Young, wild and free. Those were
the first words that came to my head, but
I consider myself a renaissance man. My
first job was working as a face painter
during summer camp in Dubai at the age of
14. I remember my first paycheck, it went
directly to my first bank account: my mom.
I worked and studied throughout my
university years in banking, business and
politics. It was tough but when you’re
young you have no excuses. I have a mother
who pushes me beyond boundaries, and
a sister who sets the bar so high that my
193cm height doesn’t help to reach it.
During my early twenties, I also ventured
into several businesses and failed miserably.
They say ‘Bad decisions make good stories’…
but they didn’t mention‘empty wallets’, too.
Tempo: What has been your most
memorable experience?
Tempo: Tell us about your book ‘Just Read It’.
Omar: Working for the UK Foreign Office. I was
a senior commercial Advisor, supporting UK
companies doing business with the UAE. I was
the first Emirati to work for the British Embassy
in Abu Dhabi. The previous Ambassador
Edward Oakden, exposed me to the highest
ranks of both British and Emirati diplomats and
businessmen. At the age of 21, I was flying sky
high and learning things that money can’t buy.
Omar: I have a lot of ideas; I go back and forth
in my conversations and it’s never a step-bystep process. I wrote a lot of ideas in the book,
so much so that I couldn’t even create a table of
content because all the ideas, or so I believed,
were good ideas. So I just went ahead and put
them in different pages. The book is about
entrepreneurship, self-development, motivation,
inspiration, or anything for that matter. It’s a
book about different ideas.

Often, I hear from quite a
number of aspiring entrepreneurs
about the fear that sends a chill
down their spine when they
think of setting up a business.
There’s the fear of failing, the
fear of the unknown, the fear of
what people will say, but there’s
no better solution to all that
worrying than to turn to prayer.
While praying, you manage to
focus all your attention on getting

has been proven medically to
relieve stress and tension and
it is recommended that you go
through this process daily.

A group photo taken at Zayed Sports City on National Day (note our spirited attempt to wear

Strength in Numbers
I
wrote this column weeks into
the new year and if I’m honest – a
statement I don’t often use before an
admission (when I read or hear it, I
think why lie?) – 2015 with its infinite
potential was beginning to lose its
appeal. Despite my determination to
at least look enthusiastic upholding
my new year’s resolutions, I had to
accept the cold, hard truth: I already
lost my momentum. I couldn’t even
find the motivation to jog – which
was only one of my many goals – a
couple of miles in preparation for
Wadi Bih in February. However, I
must admit steady-state cardio had
become a distant memory since falling
in love with weight-lifting and the
accompanying soreness, especially
after leg day.
for the most burpees in a minute, hour and
within 24-hours, I didn’t have to look far. I
joined the Dubai-based Lorna Jane team in
a group effort to attempt 1, 500 burpees in
an hour alongside Mrs. Clarke. While she
broke records in every category, the fitness
community and public banded together
to support her with donations (she always
fundraises for charities during her physical
feats), skills, publicity, time and energy.
According to Karlene Sugarman in
“Winning the Mental Way, “the fittest to
survive and succeed are those able to find
their strength in cooperation, able to build
teams based upon mutual helpfulness and
responsibility for one’s fellow teammates.”
This reinforces my belief that ultimate
strength comes in numbers, so this year
join classes at your local gym, hire a trainer
or enlist friends and family
for accountability.
While I’m not planning a world record
attempt, I am bound by my WhatsApp
group to accomplish my chosen fitness
goals. Comprised of five women – only two
of us fitness professionals (you can form
a group, too) – the group was borne out of
the WBFF contest prep last spring, and we
have formed an amazing bond advising,
encouraging, humoring and supporting
one another every step of the way. Despite
our differing goals (these girls never cease
to amaze me) like qualifying for CrossFit
regionals, international cycling and world
bikini competitions, we find unity in our
Thanks to social media and Eva Clarke’s
drive to be our best selves and ultimately,
scheduled Guinness World Record Attempt bring out the best in one another.
So, I considered heeding my own advice on
mental strength written for this column in
November. “Just think, while this is tough,
I’m tougher,” I read and repeated. Besides,
I often think about Mark Twight’s quote,
“the mind is primary…training doesn’t exist
alone, and it’s not the most important thing.
It’s an integrated part.” I knew the quote
well, however, “training doesn’t exist alone,”
struck a new chord with me, and I was
determined to enlist others for inspiration
and accountability.
s I have previously mentioned,
I used to own an AGA (which I
miss terribly); she was my best friend,
my back warmer, and my chicken
reviver. I had a dozen chickens when
we lived in our renovated barn, and I
lovingly referred to my hens as “girls”.
One time, my neighbor’s dog took a
liking to one of the girls, whom I tried
to revive in front of the AGA with the
Simmering Oven door open. Sadly,
she passed away.
My routine in the morning, once the
children are out the door, is to have dinner
cooking in the Slow Cooker before I go
to work. There’s nothing better than
opening the front door and being greeted
with wonderful smells radiating from the
kitchen, it raises a smile to my face
every time!
I can’t say that that the cooker is my new
best friend as that would be disrespectful
to Agatha (AGA). The Slow Cooker comes
in a close second and has pride of place in
my kitchen.
Indgredients:
Anyway – back to Slow Cookers. The
reason I mentioned AGA’s is that the
cooker is my replacement. I can literally
throw all my ingredients into the ceramic
pot, turn to low and allow to simmer for
a good 6-8 hours. Fantastic for when the
kids are moaning they are hungry within
five seconds of walking through the front
door from school!
I have cooked so many dishes in my Slow
Cooker: Overnight Porridge, Steamed
Puddings, stock, soup, Leg of Venison,
Lamb, whole chicken. It really is so
versatile. The cooker retains moisture and
cooks food, slowly enhancing the flavour.
The meat we have enjoyed as a family
has been stunningly tender, especially
the whole chicken – my children hate
dry chicken breast! Take a look at my
CleanEatUAE page for Slow Cooker
recipes and ideas.
So, where can you get them? Anywhere
to be honest: Lulu, Carrefour and all good
electrical stores. They come in different
sizes and they have a low, high and auto
cooking option. The cookers are versatile,
easy to work, clean and to store. Simplicity
at its best. The cost is reasonable too,
bearing in mind it really will become an
essential part of your kitchen and you
will wonder, “How on earth did I cope
without one!” I would advise you to buy a
reputable brand, mine is a Kenwood.
This month’s recipe is for a whole chicken, I
will never roast a chicken again! Especially
as I am left with a wonderful cooking stock
to use for a later recipe…
1 whole chicken 1300g (Spinneys)
Marinade
1 heaped tsp. of dried Thyme
1 heaped tsp. Paprika
2 crushed garlic cloves
2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
Sea salt & freshly grated black pepper
Mix the above ingredients together and rub
all over the chicken.
Place a quartered lemon inside the cavity.
Cover and allow it to come to room
temperature.
Meantime, in your Slow Cooker pot, place
3 unpeeled, washed carrots (chopped into
3 pieces), 3 washed celery sticks (chopped
into 3 pieces) and one whole onion, skinned
and quartered into the base.
Sit your chicken on top of the vegetables
(no additional liquid is required).
Place the lid on top, turn to low and allow
to cook for at least 6 hours, no more than 8.
Once cooked, your chicken will be
beautifully tender. Take care when
removing from the pot, as it will break up.
With the left over stock, you can simply
serve over the top of the meat or cool and
freeze to use as a stock in soups, stews,
curries etc.
Serve with roasted root vegetables, quinoa,
brown rice or cauliflower mash.
This recipe is also suitable for Paleos. Enjoy!

Cheesy Love
Lana takes a quick shot of her trip to the French Alps.
C
heese, like love, comes in various
forms, varieties and tastes but
there will always be that ‘one’ which
will get you to the core. The one
cheese, like a first love that knows
exactly what your heart desires and
puts a smile on your face after that
first bite. For me it was Raclette.
olive bread, white balsamic vinegar for
baby arugula salad and gourmet slices of
nougat. Just a few things to recreate my
French Swiss experience.
My husband, an incredible skier, decided
our kids were at that perfect age to absorb
a new skill. He planned a skiing holiday to
the French Alps, and perfect as that sounds,
I was more excited about acquainting
myself with the food.
I had decided a few years back that skiing
was not my forte. My first day at Aime La
Plagne Club Med was spent promenading
on the baby slopes. I wanted to get a feel
for my skis, perfecting my ‘chasse neige’ or
snow plough and listening to my coach yell
out “Lana, where are you going?” as I skied
off a tangent instead of elegantly turning.
It was also that night, coming in from the
blistering cold, fingers and toes seriously
and painfully numb, that I got introduced
to the smooth, creamy goodness of the
distinctive Swiss cheese.
Raclette is a huge, thick yellow pungent
wheel of cheese from the Valais region of
the Swiss Alps, near the border of France.
It is also the name of the dish, where
rectangular blocks or half wheels of the
cheese are placed on a contraption, under a
Tempo UAE (Group)
heat source, when the magic happens. The
cheese, with its balanced fat and moisture
content, melts evenly without separating
or becoming oil. It is then scraped, which
in French translates into ‘racler’ (hence its
name) onto a pile of baked small potatoes
and typically eaten with sour gherkins
and pickled onions. It’s truly the ultimate
cheese experience.
My favourite part would have to be
watching the cheese as it bubbles and
sizzles and forms a gorgeous golden-brown
crust, better known as the ‘religieuse’ or ‘la
croute de fromage’. The idea is to wait until
this crispy layer forms before it is scraped
with a knife making way for the cheese
fondant to be spilled onto your plate.
As each layer is cut from the half wheel
with the hard rind and soft interior, the
TempoBeat (Group)
cheese starts to look more like a horseshoe.
Raclette, the dish, dates back more than 700
years, when it was actually called Bratchas,
Swiss German for ‘roasted cheese’. It was
mentioned in writings as early as 1921. The
semi-hard cheese was easy to transport and
was eaten by shepherds and farmers by a
hearth or campfire.
I would like to finish off by saying that the
holy grail of cheese can still be enjoyed
warmed on a stovetop. Its consistency of
tiny holes makes it real easy to melt. All
you have to do is throw a few slices of
country-style bread on a sauté pan over
a hot fire and top them off with sliced
Raclette cheese. If you are looking for a
crispy croute de fromage, you can place it
under the broiler in the oven. Whip up a
fresh baby arugula salad and, voila, you’ve
almost recreated the authentic experience.
So almost every night after a long
frustrating day of tackling turns and trying
to get up after falling in embarrassingly
awkward positions, the pungent heady
smell of melting cheese would beckon me
for dinner. I loved it so much that I had to
purchase Raclette’s special contraption
from the airport in Geneva. I then hunted
down a fromagerie ‘cheese store’ to buy
blocks of Raclette cheese along with
accessories such as truffle butter for my

COLOUR ME ABU DHABI:
ARTIST AMIRA RAHIM
A few abstract pieces from Rahim’s studio.
Contemporary abstract artist, Amira Rahim.
M
aking a splash in the local art
scene is American Amira Rahim,
25, a contemporary abstract artist who
has just moved here from New Jersey,
and who has boldly proclaimed Abu
Dhabi as her new canvas. Tempo took a
step into her colourful world...
Tempo: What is your creative process?
Tempo: Which artists inspire you?
Amira: I am inspired by colour itself. I draw inspiration
from textiles, fashion, photography and nature, and I am
always looking for the colours that inspire me and lift my
spirit. I paint everyday usually. I like to start early in the
morning after a cup of tea or coffee when my
energy is high.
Amira: Rothko. DeKooning. Frankenthaler. Joan Miller.
These are my favourite from the Abstract Expressionist era.
Today, I continue to be inspired by many contemporary
abstract artists in Australia and the US. It’s an exciting time
to do what I love!
Tempo: How did you get into art?
I consider myself an intuitive painter and often times my
process starts days, weeks even, before I reach my studio. I
collect my reactions to random colours for a period of time
until I feel I have gathered enough inspiration to paint.
Once I reach my canvas, the colours really take over and
I respond to what’s in front of me. I usually work without
references for my abstract paintings. For my camels, and
other subjects, I try to inject as much colour as possible into
a piece without it being overwhelming. It’s a challenging
but fun balance.
Amira: I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. I
would draw and read nonstop as a kid. When I was young, I
drew every day and spent a lot of time looking at children’s
book illustrations, but my favourite thing was drawing
houses. When I found out what an architect did, I was sure
that was what I was going to become. I still like to paint
architecture, and buildings often appear in my work.
I really love the versatility of acrylic paints. I started out
painting in oils, and still love the texture oil paints achieve.
But acrylics give me the flexibility I need to really express
myself. I never planned on painting in the colourful
abstract manner that I do today, but once I moved to Abu
Dhabi, I felt that I needed more colour in my
life - I craved it.
Tempo: Who is Amira Rahim?
Amira: I was born and raised in Newark, NJ, an urban
melting pot and the birthplace of many creative talents.
I came to Abu Dhabi shortly after I got married as my
husband’s work is here.

story
Tempo: What’s a normal day in your art studio like?
Amira: I like to start early in the morning. Sometimes right
after sunrise when the light is pouring into my studio. I
paint for a few hours usually listening to a podcast of some
upbeat music. It’s like a daily exercise routine for me. I don’t
even think about it. I just know that when the day ends, I
would hope to have created a painting or start a painting
that excites me and leaves me wanting more. The most
fulfilling part of my career is seeing my art in the hands of
a happy collector and seeing my paintings on the walls of
beautiful homes. It’s the best part of being an
artist in my opinion.
Tempo: What are you working on right now?
Amira: I am working on building a portfolio of large, highenergy abstract paintings with lots of texture, colour, and
even some suggestions of figures. It will take months to
create, but I am so excited to finally put the many ideas that
I have onto large canvas.
Tempo: And your future plans?
Amira: At the moment, I am looking for galleries and
stockists in the Emirates to represent my work. I think
there is a real need for colorful, contemporary art here in
the UAE and I am happy to be recognized as an artist fit for
the job. It’s a joy to show up to work every morning and
this is the first “job”I can ever say that for.
Tempo: And your message to aspiring artists?
Amira: Paint often. Take risks. Know yourself.

THE POWER
OF TWO:
HIP HOP
AND BLUES
By Vera Rosales
C
ollaboration is about understanding each partner’s strengths
and weaknesses to make something more beautiful than
any one person can do, and nothing exemplifies this quite like
music. Nova and Iam Vocal talked to Tempo about their creative
process, future plans and their
recent collaboration.
CREATIVE PROCESS
Nova strumming a few tunes for us.
DEFINING GENRE
MEET THE ARTISTS
NOVA: I am a Music-Producer and
Artist.
IAM VOCAL: I go by the name I
am VOCAL” and VOCAL stands for
Voice Over Creative Artist Lyricist.
Ever since I was taught how to say
“The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat…” I knew
I was destined to be putting words
together in the most creative
ways possible.
NOVA: Hmm. Hip Hop with a
Pinch of Blues.
IAM VOCAL: Within Hip Hop
lies every other genre. I can take
an ‘Orchestral Symphony’ and
put nasty drums on them and you
have ‘Hip Hop Orchestra’, or I could
sample soul music and put a fresh
beat on it and we got ‘Hip Hop Soul’.
I could even get ‘Electronic Dance
Music’ and put Trap kicks and snares
and you would get ‘Trap EDM’. It’s
all Hip Hop one way or another.I’m
also a professional Voice Artist and
I normally do that really cool ‘Movie
Trailer Guy Voice’.
NOVA: People inspire me
– even if I don’t even
know them. They
can be anybody
walking on the
street. We are all
connected and it
interests me to know
what’s going on in other
people’s lives. We all have our
bad days and good days, we share
moments together unexpectedly
and we relate unconsciously to what
it’d be like to be in the other’s shoes.
So relating to one another
inspires me.
If had already come up with lyrics,
I would start with my melody first,
focus on making it catchy. Then I
add the drums and build a rhythm.
As I go on I may add harmonies,
and experiment with weird sounds,
which is fun but can also be a
headache if you don’t know what
kind of beat you’re making.
IAM VOCAL: Emotions always
inspire me to write so I start by
finding something that moves
me emotionally. I start with the
instrumental so I’ll play around
with different sounds until I get a
tune that makes me feel something.
Then I let the feeling dictate what
I’m going to talk about. When I got
the subject then I do what I do best
and tie it all together with
elaborate flow.

LAUNCH OF NEW EP
NOVA: It’s a hip-hop album.
I’m working with an extremely
talented lyricist (points to Iam
Vocal). It’s filled with acoustics and
live instruments. It’s a raw album
and you can say it contradicts
what’s popular now.
IAM VOCAL: Every once in a while
in your journey through life, you
will meet people that are on your
wavelength. It doesn’t happen all
the time but when it does then
magic happens. Vocal’s a chill
dude, dope writer and talented
guitar player who plays a sound
that vibrates in my frequency. He’s
the kind of guy I’d hang with even
without the music and that’s why it
was so easy to put the
songs together.
THE LOCAL
MUSIC SCENE
NOVA: It’s an opportunity waiting
to be conquered.
IAM VOCAL: I can’t shake this
feeling that something big is about
to happen here. We’re but a spark
away from igniting the multicultural flames of talent in UAE.
That spark could be an artist, a
pioneering record label, or even
a platform that supports local
musicians like TEMPO.
IamVocal collecting his thoughts on his next song.
THE BIG PLAN
NOVA: I want to be hopefully
appreciated by an audience!
IAM VOCAL: 10 years from now I
want to put my dusty old record on
and still feel the way I felt when I
made it 10 years earlier.
WORD UP
NOVA: Never give up, keep yourself
inspired and remember that art is
about trial and error.
IAM VOCAL: Only make the music
that you would like to hear. Do it
for yourself first. There are many
people who like what you like and
when you make music that you
love then those people with similar
taste will find you...or you’ll find them.

TALKING BOOKS

The Lover’s Dictionary by
David Levithan
T
here’s nothing quite like
The Lover’s Dictionary.
Beautifully crafted by David
Levithan, it is a novel of love
but it reads like poetry in its
witty wordplay and eloquently
written dictionary entries - yes,
just like a dictionary! Every
page holds a word carefully
selected from the love story, as
though the writer were picking
ripe fruit, to describe the state
of the protagonists’ relationship.
Written in the form of a
dictionary, the novel speaks
of an unnamed couple who
meet through an online dating
website through the eyes of
the male narrator. It’s a fun,
effortless read and little focus on
the traditional plot. Two people
meet and fall in love after a few
dates. Much like meeting or
talking to someone online, the
novel focuses on the emotional
state of the characters, rather
than the mundane details about
their past or appearance.
The entries aren’t written in a
chronological order, so the timeline tends to jump from one event to the other. Some
seem like journal-entries whilst others are short notes. The reader is often left to
ponder the details of the obligatory ups and downs of the relationship, and whether
the protagonists have chosen to overlook them. I like to believe that’s left for the
reader to decide, because it tackles the question of whether love dies or not. Indeed,
that is one of the things I admire most about this novel; the whimsical way it leaves
the reader to decide.
Here’s an excerpt from the book explaining why it was written in dictionary-form:
“ineffable, adj.
These words will ultimately end up being the barest of reflections, devoid of the
sensations words cannot convey. Trying to write about love is ultimately like trying
to have a dictionary represent life. No matter how many words there are, there will
never be enough.”
This novel is all about wordplay. You can pick any random page from the book and
read it as though you were reading a dictionary. As a writer, I loved the wordplay and
unique narrative structure.
LIBRARIANS’ LOUNGE

Librarians: Culture Keepers
The ceiling of the Louvre Abu Dhabi
was lowered into place just a few weeks
ago. The excitement created a buzz
among the community and the UAE as
a whole. One person is critical to the
success of the resources available within
the museums and supporting the cultural
research needs of the curators, visitors
and scholars.
Shaikha Al Muhairi is one of the leading
librarians responsible for harnessing
the power of information to ensure
Abu Dhabi Cultural Authority staff is
empowered to create, innovate and design
with the highest level of authoritative
sources and research required to ensure
they retell the history of UAE accurately
and thoroughly. Her role as Cultural
Resource Centre Manager is critical to the success of the organization. She serves as
the research consultant to the meet the information needs of the cultural hub that is
thriving in UAE as we speak. If they are curating a new exhibit they seek her expertise
for background research, subject specific publications and fact checking. Librarians
develop the competitive intelligence to drive cultural, business and
education organizations.
“The challenge of starting a library from a shelf of books and nothing else is quite
daunting; unlike starting in an established library. You have to create things from
scratch, systems, policies, procedures, equipment, interiors and of course collections. The
biggest challenge would be embedding research and professional readings in the daily
routine of the employees.”
She sparks innovation and creativity within her staff through a series of Discovery
Lectures from experts in the fields based on a staff members preliminary presentation
on the topic and how it can enhance the cultural experience of the stakeholders. The
Discovery Series serves as a interdisciplinary /multi-disciplinary approach which
provides a forum for the different professionals to learn about their counterparts/
colleagues’ area of specialization. She is dedicated to hosting educational seminars in the
area of Museum and Cultural Studies to educate the community of
professionals in the region.
“The future of the CRC depends on the librarians ability to respond to the ever
changing needs of the employees in a proactive manner. Adding value to the employees
professional practice will make the CRC an integral part of their professional life.”
Cecila Danboyi, experienced curator, and I had an opportunity to visit the rich
information center housed in the Cultural Authority complex. Shaikha is an expert in
her field and has put in her 10,000 hours to hone her expertise in searching, collection
development, project management, staff management and many other skills she utilizes
to effectively in her unit. She is a role model to many young aspiring Emirati culture
keepers. She is a fountain of knowledge and history; and is an environmental steward
to preserve the natural beauty of UAE. We need more leaders like Shaikha Al Muhairi to
ensure the rich culture of UAE is accessible to the local community, regional
visitors and worldwide.

F
or more than two weeks, my life
has been reduced to hell due to the
handwork of Asquith. I was hoping
to make a fresh start at preparatory
international school, Lusaka, Zambia.
I enjoyed the particularly lovely weather of
this new place. It was sunshine all the way.
The school itself was a paragon of beauty
– no tall buildings, only lovely bungalow
buildings that squatted in the well lushed
lawn. The area was so posh and peaceful
that you wouldn’t ever imagine a fly
being hurt in this place. The glasses in
the windows were all crystal clear. The
classrooms were so spacious and we were
a maximum of sixteen pupils in the class.
The air was always cool and the fans blew
a mixture of warm and cool air. This school
was tucked in between the lovely hills of
Metibe in Lusaka, Zambia.
From the first day, Asquith was determined
to make my life a ruin. He would taint
and taunt me. He enjoyed bullying me, he
delighted seeing me miserable, he was just
in ecstasy seeing me in pains. Something
had to be done, and that right quick too. If
not, I would die in pains.
Asquith was a very muscular boy, with
almost all his veins showing. He had a
very athletic build, and was always ready
to demonstrate his strength. Almost
everybody was scared of him.
He had his way all the time and he was a
compulsive liar. He looked a lot older than
the rest of us.
Having suffered in silence for two weeks,
I was determined to put an end to this.
Junior, Kola, Effson and myself were sitting
in the far left corner of the handball pitch
discussing how to end this nonsense.
“So what should we do?” Kola queried.
“I have an idea” Junior echoed.
Each time Junior spoke, we couldn’t help
laughing because we thought it would be
connected to food. No wonder he looked
so round, like a football. His cheeks looked
thoroughly pumped, just short of bursting.
To make matters worse he was quite short.
“What’s the idea?” Effson asked.
“I bet it’s about food” I joked.
“Ya’ll will all love this, and it’s going to
work” Junior continued.
The Story Mile tales, which are the first of a three volume series, were recently
published as a book in English and titled “Tales from the Emirates” in Arabic. The
stories not only share the storytelling tradition of the Emirates, but have also
introduced other key aspects of Emirati culture and are creating new footprints in
the sands of the cultural landscape of the UAE.
The Nagat El Eid Camel

“Say it then” we all seemed to chorus.
“Asquith has a dark past you know, I mean
a terrible past”
“Really” I asked.
“What is it?” Effson quizzed.
“Just hold on everybody! I tell ya, you will
love it. That is why Asquith never messes
with me. I am the only one who knows his
dark past. Next time he harasses you, just
mention Entebbe.”
“Huh?” everyone wondered.
“They ate so
much that they
could hardly
breathe!”
Asquith narrated to the quadrant the
entire story behind that magic word
‘Entebbe’. At the end of it all … everyone
admitted nothing could surpass that.

“Junior come here!” called Asquith.
“I aint coming.” I responded.
“What did ya say? So you even talk
back at me now”
I pretended not to hear him and walked on.
“Junior, I repeat, come here!”
“I aint coming”
“By the count down of three, if I do not see
you here, consider yourself
dead – three, two, one…”
Asquith charged towards me, expecting
me to act in my usual old self. With his
strong arms grasping the collar of my shirt
and dragging me to himself, I pronounced
‘Entebbe’. He literally froze. His hands
dropped off me and he looked at me
with such regret. His eyes welled up
with frustration, confusion, and he stood
transfixed for about two minutes. His
mouth was getting wider in awe, and he
couldn’t gather himself to recover
from the shock.
I walked away as he stood gazing at my
form fade out of view.
I
t was a cold and quiet morning in the desert. Inside the many tents, children
started to wake up with their parents. Every morning, the ladies milked the sheep
and camels and made cheese, labna, butter and chammi. The men did the farming,
growing fruits and vegetables. After the ladies finished the milking, they sat in a circle
and taught the children the Holy Quran, Arabic, and played games of matchsticks.
One day, there was a big wedding. Everyone was invited, even the children including
three young boys Mohammad, Khalifa and Rashed, who were very naughty. During the
wedding, the boys ate constantly for three whole days. They ate so much that they could
hardly breathe. They couldn’t even walk because they were so full with food. Their
parents were very embarrassed.
The parents of Mohammad, Khalifa and Rashed decided to have a meeting to discuss
how they could solve this problem and improve their children’s behaviors. So over
lunch, they decided to tell them the story of a huge camel that had a big chin and ate
greedy children. The next day before lunch Mohammad, Khalifa and Rashed were
sitting with their fathers around the food. One of the fathers asked if the boys knew
Nagat Al Eid. The boys looked at each other. The father said, “Yesterday, there was a
huge, dark camel.” Another father responded, “Really? What happened? Why did it
come?” The third father answered, “This big, ugly camel came for the children who are
greedy and misbehave. The camels take them and eat them and crush them without
mercy.” When the boys heard that, they started shaking and felt very scared. Khalifa
looked at Rashed and Mohammad, then asked his father, “Will the camel come and eat
us?” The father answered him, “If you behave badly, yes it will.” From then on, the three
boys never ate too much again.

STORYTELLING
STARTING POINTS FOR CREATIVITY
I often hear questions like “How can I start my creativity?” or “How to earn money
with my ideas?” The best answer is always to check some of the powerful innovation
portals that already exist. It is always very useful to see examples of new innovation
projects and get insight into the creative products that are trying to conquer the
market.
There are many places on the internet where ideas can be submitted or where
innovators can be inspired by reviewing interesting concepts. A first stop full of
interesting stuff is surely threadless.com where you can submit t-shirt design and
win cash, prizes and fame. Another site with similar content is cafepress.com. It looks
so good that now many of the world’s designers are trying to create t-shirts.
A starting site for all domain-specialists and researchers should be
innocentive.com, where many challenges can be found and experts can quickly
become one of Innocentive’s “Solvers”.
If you have a need to unleash your creativity potential or simply need to reshape or
finish your idea, try to use the iPhone/iPad App ‘Unleash Creativity’.
Trying to invent a product for everyday usage? First check should be tschibo-ideas.de
(German). Maybe you want to build a small robot? Use LEGOs and check
mindstorms.lego.com.
The platform indie-gogo.com gives the possibility to browse or create campaigns, but
what is most important is to be inspired by the many interesting ideas it showcases.
There are so many new projects every day, so be sure to check back regularly for
more. Another crowdfunding platform kickstarter.com is also the place where you
can check many successful ideas and submit your own. Yet another similar site is
crowdfunder.com, which is a platform for raising investment and already has many
ongoing projects.
Storytelling has been utilized as the driving force of developing series
such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Sure, anyone can make up
a fantasy world with dragons and castles, but putting that on script and
words isn’t easy. Storytellers are able to bring you into the imaginary
world they describe with strong imagery and detail that will have you
forgetting reality.
When you have an idea that you think is prepared for a world premiere, quirky.com
is a great option to use. You can submit your idea and then see how many votes you
can collect. This could be the starting point for the idea life-cycle. Good luck!
Storytelling is a unique gift and can be found only in few, these rare talented people are
now the master minds behind the blockbuster hits such as The Hobbit (The Lord of the
Rings Trilogy), The Maze Runner, The Ender Games, Percy Jackson, and many
more great stories.
But where do these storytellers exist? Storytellers and storytelling come in all forms,
across all media in film, gaming, literature or music. That unique skill and talent doesn’t
live in just everyone, unfortunately, but it can be learned.
You need practice and passion in your story to push it to its full potential. The creative
imagery is how you see it in your mind, the ability to put it in picture is up to you.
According to Jenn Godbout, the five beats to creating a successful story are The
Introduction, The Inciting Incident, Raising the Stakes, The Main Event, and finally The
Resolution. Having the breakdown of these key figures helps guide the development
of a good story.
Aside the basic tips, a storyteller should have an open mind – always analyzing his or her
surroundings - and creating a story that dwells deep into the heart of imagination and
shaping a deep connection between character and viewer. It is important to use the right
imagery and words to give the full effect of the scenery.
The local creative industry is in need of such talent to develop content. How about you?
Do you have the skill and passion? Start writing your stories, you never know if you’ll be
the next sensation!

very very good at helping each other when we are put in a position
where we can help each other. I’m so glad to see now particularly in the
UAE that the ladies who are being successful are pulling up those other
women – helping them, mentoring them, standing by them, encouraging
them. I love it! I read the newspaper everyday and without fail I almost
knock over my café latte just thinking YES! Yes, these women are doing
these. They’re bringing each other along”.
Omar on Just Read It
“What’s it about? And I’m like: “Just Read It”
The book? I’ll tell you this now – basically
it’s about the attitude of an entrepreneur. It’s
everything that everybody here spoke about.
All about that self-development. All about
social, emotional intelligence. All the things
that you already know. You either learned
it at school, at home, from religion. All the
things you were taught about: How to deal
with people and all that energy. All these
things we’re talking about. All these reasons
why we’re all here. It’s all in the book. The only
difference is – I Omarized it. I just said it in my style”.
Jules Lewis on Do It Now
“ We’ve got 168 hours in the week so please
invest some time in yourself. Two and a half,
three hours for ‘me’. Just write in your diary
– ME: My personal excellence account; My
personal legend account – because you got
to Think, Eat, Move and Sleep really well to
be able to perform and succeed in today’s
business world. So do it now. My friend Paolo
says ‘One day you will wake up and there
won’t be any more time to do the things you
always wanted to do.’ So as Nike says: ‘Just
Do It!’’
Dorian on The Abu Dhabi
International Poetry Festival
“I know the sky is the limit but basically
that has brought me to a place in which I
thought even of doing things on a bigger
level – how can I leave a legacy after I’m gone
from Abu Dhabi, maybe in the next few
years? How can I build a legacy that’s way
bigger than me that promotes positive selfexpression for everyone in the community?
And the idea hit me to do an International
Poetry Festival which currently isn’t being done in the Middle East.
And my first thought was to reach out to a couple of friends as I told
you which I build relationships and that’s why I’m proud to present
the inaugural Abu Dhabi International Poetry Festival in conjunction
with BrandMoxie which will be held in Paris-Sorbonne University on
March 19th 2015. We’ll do a one-day festival and it will be free to the
public and we’ll have international poets that will be speaking both in
Arabic and English. It will be free to community – lectures, workshops
and feature performances so thank you so much and I hope
to see you there”.

Dorian ‘Paul D’ Rogers is a regular Tempo contributor and award-winning poet.
BREAKING IT DOWN
WITH DJ A.L.L.A.D.
I
had a chat with A.L.L.A.D.,
local DJ and poet in the
UAE, to hear about his
passion for music, rhythm
and prose…
the movement combined creates a ‘potion’
or what we call poetry in motion. They
both allow me to time travel in thoughtmaking. You reflect on your past and look
toward to the future or next to come. Plus,
they are both parts of the five elements of
Hip-Hop.
Paul D: How did you get into
DJing and poetry?
Paul D: What elements make a good DJ?
A.L.L.A.D.: I’ve always had an ear for music
since I was young. I vaguely remember
riding in the back of my mother’s car
and listening to the radio. Songs would
come on, and I would imagine remixing
them. I would often run across records but
never had the tables to practice on until I
entered college. Spending endless hours
in the studio, I envisioned rocking parties
and radio spotlights. Teaming with the
profound DJ Sicari Ware from Detroit and
Well Blended from Cincinnati, I studied the
art of scratching and beat-matching. This
is how my passion for music became an
outlet for expression. As for poetry, I began
rhyming in middle school to impress my
English teacher who told me I could travel
to any place in the world and be anything
through my mind pencil. Writing became
my outlet for travel. Later it became my
platform for debate and for discussing my
view on life.
Paul D: Which of the two art forms are
you most passionate about?
A.L.L.A.D.: I am honestly in love with both
because they are creatively similar. HipHop is poetry and DJing is the motion, so
A.L.L.A.D.: Knowledge of music, wisdom
of music’s struggle, ‘overstanding’ of the
journey, freedom of musical expression,
the power of beat matching, the perfection
of your craft, and the mastery of blending
tracks to create a seamless groove.
Paul D: You play many different genres
of music and are often known for your
various sets at a party. What’s your
favourite musical genre?
A.L.L.A.D.: I am in love with Hip Hop,
Reggae, and Neo-Soul.
Paul D: I love Neo-Soul and Old School
Soul the most! You have been the regular
DJ at Rooftop Rhythms for about two
years. How is DJing a poetry set different
from DJing a party?
Paul D: In a little over two years you
have gone from being based in Al Ain to
playing all over the UAE and even Qatar.
How have you handled that success?
A.L.L.A.D.: I believe that when you are
passionate about your craft it will reach
many and allow you to touch minds and
hearts. The success is not the aim; the
passion is the focus.
Paul D: You recently partnered with your
wife, the poet, TRUE, to write children’s
books. Tell me about your first book, The
Alphabet Palace.
A.L.L.A.D.: Wow! TRUE is an amazing
sister in so many ways. She is my
motivation, inspiration, dedication,
imagination, and just, simply put, my
reflection. The book was created from
an off the cuff bed time story for my
children Jahi and Nalah who push us to
create stories for them before they go to
bed. TRUE started the story and later told
me that we should create it and publish
it. After she published her poetry book,
Testified, The Alphabet Palace was next
in the pipeline. It’s simply about a Prince
named Preston who loves everything in
the world that begins with the letter P
and runs into a Princess who he adores
but will not marry because her name does
not begin with that letter. After being
locked away for not following Preston’s
orders, she shows him all the wonderful
things he could have that do not begin
with the letter P and opens his mind to a
world of amazing things. The book teaches
lessons of growth and acceptance. You can
purchase it directly from my wife, Michelle
“True” Francois, by contacting her through
Facebook or online at http://bookstore.
xlibris.com.
Paul D: Do you have any financial
incentive, because this coffee is expensive
and I’m a little short?
A.L.L.A.D.: *Stares without saying a word*
Facebook: DjAllad
Mixcloud.com/DjAllad
A.L.L.A.D.: DJing a poetry set allows me
to make you reminisce on times of your
life where music created a memory. It also
allows me to bring forth a lot of Neo-Soul
artists that normally wouldn’t get played
in a club set. The movement for poetry and
Neo-Soul go hand and hand. I push to create
thoughts with my poetry sets.

REACHING OUT TO NATURE
N
ot unlike many of my
student counterparts,
I have been through many
instances of total fickleness
when it comes to deciding
what my life would be
like after high school. I
have changed my mind on
more occasions than I can
count on things like “what
I want to be when I grow
up,”. I’ve been doing a lot of
exploring, researching, and
dreaming about various
career choices before finally
finding my ‘calling’: Politics
and International Law. But
there’s always been my notall-that-gone interest
in Zoology…
I have always been obsessed with animals
– even becoming a vegetarian for a year
because I did not want to eat any “meat”
that may it be from anything from aquatic
life to desert dwelling critter. This interest
manifested itself in my decision to apply
for a volunteer job at the Environmental
Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). After waiting
many months, during which time my
passion shifted even though my interest
lingered, I was able to step into
the assignment.
My first day was by far the least eventful,
aside from meeting all the wonderful
people who work so hard to preserve the
greenery and the wildlife diversity that
exists in the UAE. I arrived at 8:30am
sharp and was introduced to all the people
I would work under in the Terrestrial &
Marine Biodiversity Division. After that,
the “fun” bit began: filing. The strange thing
THE JANE GOODALL VISIT
is that I genuinely enjoy filing! Ever since
my volunteer job at the Make-A-WishFoundation last summer, maybe it’s genetic
(my mother is a neat freak) or because of
my perfectionism, I found the organization
and process of it quite soothing. It also gave
me insight on the real workings of ‘work’.
Every other day during my internship
I would go on a trip to the field with a
wildlife specialist. The first trip was to
the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. There,
I helped with a terrestrial mammal
survey, in which we checked on traps
previously set, examined the desert
gerbils and scorpions for their gender and
measurements, and then set them back
into the wild. I even saw a whole flock of
flamingos nesting! The other field trips
were to the Mangrove National Park,
where we took a not-open-to-the-publicyet boat tour and stopped people from
violating park regulations. We also went
to an aquaponic farm where we filled out
a safety and ethical conduct questionnaire,
the Free Port were we observed and
surveyed at a fish auction, and Jebel Hafeet
where we conducted a survey of the
birdlife there. I even got to
feed some vultures!
The experience not only taught me the ins
and outs of office life, giving me valuable
work experience, but also that there are
so many people who don’t know about
wildlife in the UAE. We assume that just
because the country is located in a desert
that nature is limited when in fact all I’ve
learned will challenge that popular belief.
For instance, did you know that the UAE
is home to the world’s second largest
dugong population? Or that the UAE is a
breeding ground to around 100 species of
birds? I didn’t either, until my internship.
My time there really opened my eyes to
the impressive feats that the agency was
able to accomplish and the natural beauty
of Abu Dhabi emirate that it was able to
preserve. I am grateful to have been given
the opportunity to be a part of such an
incredible organization.

with a visit from one of
their heroines, Dr. Jane
Goodall, who came with
the Executive Director
of Education for the Jane
Goodall Foundation, Tara
Golshan. Concern and care
of the environment is a
strong component of the
Service Learning Program at
ACS, with many of the older
students involved or even
creating projects to protect
our environment.
Four years ago, attending a film entitled
Journey with Jane, Channin Becker, a
third grade teacher at ACS, was inspired
to create a Roots and Shoots programme
for the elementary division of ACS. Since
then, the group has been a dynamic
partner in the environmental movement.
The third to fifth grade students had the
opportunity to bring Jane up to date on
their accomplishments this year.
These included planting trees with the
Ghaf Institute, researching water usage,
installing automatic taps at the school and
raising funds to conduct “Bus Raids” for
workers. They also collected ring tabs for
the Phillipine Children’s Fund, gathered
gently used clothes to distribute to those
in need, and created “Trashon” hats to
add a little fun to the serious business of
saving the planet!

ACS club teachers Channin Becker and
Nandita Saxena, along with ACS Service
Learning coordinator Anne Russell, and
Service Learning Assistant Leena Bahoshy,
were honoured at NYU Abu Dhabi with an
award from the Jane Goodall Foundation.
The NYU Abu Dhabi event was sponsored
by the Environmental Agency of Abu
Dhabi and included the other Abu
Dhabi schools such as British School of
Al Khubairat, the Shaikh Khalifa Bin
Zayed Bangladesh Islamia School, the
Indian School of Abu Dhabi, Al Muna
School, the Emirates Private School and
Al Mushrif School. All the schools set up
a table showcasing their Roots and Shoots
projects. The displays were creative and
inspirational; we definitely look forward to
some collaborative projects!
For the students, the main highlight was
an opportunity to share their projects and
thoughts with Dr. Jane. The ACS students
took turns explaining their successful
endeavors. She quietly told them about her
concerns for the environment and how,
working together, we can make a difference
every day.
For the parents and staff at the event the
highlight was watching Jane interact
with the passionate young people. She
acknowledged their hard work, affirmed
their beliefs, and stressed that they should
never be overwhelmed because they are
part of a larger family of environmentally
aware citizens.
The Roots and Shoots members concluded
the day’s celebration with a rousing
environmental “RAP” song and birthday
cake for Jane Goodalls’ 80th birthday!

Electronic Parenting
M
y rule is cut and dry:
no TV and an hour
of electronic interaction
on weeknights, with more
relaxed regulations on the
weekends. Oh, how that rule
gets tested! I face the modern
parents’ classic dilemma:
how and when do I need to
limit my kids’ exposure to
electronics? I am
all befuddled.
We parents are bombarded with warnings
about not encouraging a generation of
obese couch potatoes. But, my girlz are
physically active, ice-skating about 10
hours per week, plus off-ice training, PE at
school and regular visits to the trampoline
and parks. Shaking their booty?
Yes, mine do.
We are told too much electronics
affects grades and deters kids from
doing homework. But mine sit down
immediately when they get home every
day, without being told, and do their
homework thoroughly. Their grades make
Mommy proud. Electronics are apparently
not rotting their brains.
Experts warn us that access to electronics
disturbs sleep patterns and leaves kids tired
and insomniac. Sigh. Mine drop off like
angels at 9:05 every night.
And, parents are frightened by studies
that say kids are socially impaired because
they do not interact with other kids or
participate in activities after school. Yes,
you guessed it, mine do yearbook, choir,
drama, and skating. They are outgoing,
funny, have friends, and enjoy a certain
level of popularity amongst their peers.
And to compound this, many of the games
my girlz play on the iPad, such as Minecraft
and Monopoly, they play together.
Sometimes we have to tell them to pipe
down as their gaming gets out of hand
and they are screaming at each other.
Socially turned on? Yup. And, by the way,
Monopoly, the real game, costs Dh 140 new.
The App? Dh 20. Ugh. No help.
Parents are lectured to model good
behaviour by abstaining from electronics
themselves. But my writing, banking,
bill paying, news gathering and family
connections are all online. The books I read
all start with an “e.” I am exactly what I
don’t want my kids to be!!
So what and where are the limits? An hour
a day? Two? Does the time they spend
online at school count? Does it count if
they are texting me? If homework involves
online research, does that count as well?
And loom bands. My girlz love making
loom bands. They often come to me after
electronic time has finished to see if they
can use YouTube to find instructive videos
of new styles of loom bands to create.
That’s the Internet as a tool, yes? What
about playing Just Dance on the PS3? After
half an hour they are a sweaty and out
of breath. Is it electronic time or exercise
time? It is a true conundrum. I lose sleep
not because I am on my iPad too much, but
because I am too worried if THEY are.
My mother told me to relax. “When you
were young, I fought to get you to turn
off the television. I thought for sure your
Brady Bunch obsession would take over
your life,” she says. At least they are
playing strategy games. There is a certain
amount of thinking involved. The girls are
going the way of the future and are well
armed for the expansion of the electronic
age. What is a mom to do? Please, Tweet
me your suggestions.
