Hallelujah. Finally after years of promise and hope, but delivery of nothing,
Lake Wakatipu looks like it is going to get what it so desperately needs. A
simple thing that most large bodies of water used by humans have - a decent
marina. An access point to properly utilise this amazing asset we have.
When I opened a QLDC press release last Friday and read the council’s
resolution to allow private marina developers Lake Marina Projects Ltd to
proceed with plans for a new marina at Frankton, it was welcome news after
the failure of prospective marina developers in the past. Admittedly, this marina
‘tick’ is just a council directive and the developers still need to work their way
through their fair share of red tape and bureaucracy to gain resource consent.
Then, physically build the thing and operate a successful business. No easy
feat, but I am sure once any issues raised during the public consultation
process are addressed, this facility will get the support is deserves from the
Wakatipu’s boating community.
At this time of year on a beautiful hot summer’s day, it is plainly obvious Lake
Wakatipu is the most underutilised “urban lake” in New Zealand. While every
other lake in the country is teeming with small boats, our majestic lake is for the
most part void of activity. What a wasted opportunity for residents and tourists
alike. Last Sunday was one of the hottest days of the year. Queenstown Bay
was heaving with bodies taking advantage of the cool mountain water Lake
Wakatipu is famous for. Frankton Arm was also a hive of activity. But look out
into the lake proper and it seems like only the Earnslaw and a few others dare
venture further. In comparison, Lake Wanaka is a boaties’ haven. It is shallower
and warmer with more secluded little bays to pull up in, but the biggest
difference is ease of access. It is just so much less troublesome to own,
maintain and operate a boat over the Crown Range in Wanaka as opposed to
here in the Wakatipu.

154 years ago when William Rees settled in Queenstown, the Lake was the life
blood. Without it, settlement here would have been near impossible. In more
recent times the lake has become something most are afraid to touch. A proper
marina in the Frankton Arm will be a game changer for life on and around
Lake Wakatipu and hopefully get more people out on the water rather than just
looking upon it from afar.

Dog Fouling
You’re barking mad! Dogs. It’s that four letter word that
stirs up so much controversy in the LWB. Not classed
as profanity, not yet, not until I found one urinating idly
up the leg of the table I was sat at whilst having a lakeside
lunch with friends.
I’m not sure what was worse; the ammoniacal piss canal
meandering round my jandals, or the fact that the owner,
acutely aware of what was happening, was staring out over
the lake, eyes fixated on anything - anything other than her
pissy dog. After a good ten seconds of “I don’t believe
it” I finally managed to string together half a sentence and
confront the woman, who was now making a dash away
down the wharf accompanied by said dog.
“Do you want compensation?” She retorted. “No.” I said,
in fact meaning yes. Yes in the sense that every respectable
dog and dog owner is severely limited on where they
can go, and what they can do, because of irresponsible
owners such as yourself, who make life difficult (and
disgusting) for the 99%.
A massive thank you to the waitress who took it upon
herself to wash away that dogs mess. And to the owner,
I hope your dog leaves you a big curly one treaded deep
into your new havana cream carpet

I go out for dinner at least 2 times a week to various
resturaunts....what is starting to piss me off is the number
of times that I sit down at the table, and it is wobbly....how
many other people feel this way???
I cant be the only person who gets this, but invariably the
table wobbles, the drinks spill, and I get peeved....for god
s sakes resturaunts...GET IT SORTED.... .

bunch of lycra-clad idiots to be riding 3,4 5
or 6 abreast - yes Steve I have seen 5 abreast
coming down the Crown Range - that when
tooted at politely turn around yelling obscenities
such as “havent you heard of share the road you
f###wit” as the continue along at 15kmh on a
100kmh road blocking traffic.

included. This would be very helpful and reduce stress,
just trying to cross the road.
Cyclists: Steve Gurney is correct in saying that
cyclists who own vehicles pay road tax but as
this is distance related (per km for diesels and
per lt of petrol used for petrol vehicles) the
cyclists only contribute when driving. When
riding they are free loading on the road.

end, between the Terrace Junction Retail Centre and the
Summerfields Pharmacy and Post Shop.
It is a nightmare trying to get across espically on the Terrace
Junction side where you have to cross two lanes of traffic!

Pedestrian crossing improvements at this location are
being considered as part of a long term transport
improvement package the Transport Agency and
QLDC are working on for the Frankton area.
