The 1939 epic historical film, Gone with the Wind, is a story of
romance that stands the test of time. The iconic love story of Scarlett
O’Hara and Rhett Butler, set against the backdrop of the American
Civil War, was no doubt a prominent feature in the lives of many
young people growing up in the 1940s and 50s. Because of its
significance, we’ve decided to dedicate several events in February to
celebrating this acclaimed romance! Details about the events are
listed on the following page.

How did I get here?
This month you have so many
opportunities to experience many of the things
similar to my list. So, why not try? You’ll have
chances to try a variety of group fitness
classes every week; to learn from experts in
our community including Dr. Steve Morris,
member of the Audubon Society Joe Meche,
and our own Jen Rein; to share your
enthusiasm for film and culture with our Gone
with the Wind Events. Want to get to know
other people? Join the group going out to
dinner at Anthony’s, or head to the Couples
Happy Hour, or come to the Ladies Night in
Film with Jen and Sierra. Don’t forget this
month’s Welcome Lunch, or the Men’s
Breakfast at Cedars Restaurant & Lounge.
Music anyone? We’ll, take our bus door to door
to The Bellingham Music Club, and to The
Whatcom Symphony. Concerts right here
include Mark Kelly and the Youth Jazz
Ensemble, BentGrass and Richard Tucker.
I am counting on you to take advantage of all
that we have to offer, and continue to be my
inspiration for how to live and age well.
That’s what I call LifeMinded™ Living!
This is a big
month for me, I’m
challenged
to
walk the talk of
LifeMinded™
Living. It is my
60th birthday this
month, and I have
to say that it has
been niggling at
the back of my mind. We say age
is just a number, but do I believe
that? I want to believe, but I keep
wondering where the time has
gone, and am I really this old?
As I look back, I see that my perspective
has changed tremendously. I am much more
empathetic and kind, I get choked up over the
simplest things: seeing Mt. Baker, or Trumpeter
Swans, shoots making their way out of the soil,
or a sappy movie. I don’t take life or health for
granted any more, it occurs to me that more of
my life is behind me than ahead of me.
I feel fortunate because I have had the
privilege of watching so many LifeMinded™
people age successfully, bucking society’s ~Viki
stereotypes about what it means to be “old.” I
strive to emulate those of you who inspire me staying active, eating well, being generous with
my heart and feeding my mind.
I’ve vowed to become younger and less
mature starting this year, so by the time I reach
90, I should be about 30… ha! I hope to be more
focused on the present, and not worry so much
about the future. I will….
Choose physical activity over inactivity.
Listen to new music, not just music I know.
Dance every day, even if it’s while driving.
Fly my kite more.
Only hang out with positive people (that’s
pretty easy, just show up at The Willows).
Play more! Do something every day that
makes my belly laugh.
Become more socially connected outside of
work.
