After The Epiphany
“Making Him Known”
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on
you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:8
Saturday, January 31, 2015 – 5:30 pm
Sunday, February 1, 2015 – 8:00 & 10:40 am
Our Mission Statement: “As Christians based on the solid
foundation of God’s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we
strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ –
welcoming all into our family of believers.”
Our Theme:
Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical
characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In February, we
remember Paul, who “Made Him Known” to the nations.
WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of
us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship
& Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our “Welcome Center” in the narthex for additional
information about Redeemer.
OUR THEME FOR TODAY is “To The Nations.” Paul was reminded by Jesus himself that he
died for all people, and would have us share his love in all the nations of the world.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and
receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us
first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have
sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful
condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our
heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to
me, a sinner.
Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting
life. Amen.
Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives
you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I
therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, You have called Your Church to witness that in Christ You have
reconciled us to Yourself. Grant that by Your Holy Spirit we may proclaim the good
news of Your salvation so that all who hear it may receive the gift of salvation; through
Jesus Christ, our Lord.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
L:
The First reading for the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany is from Deuteronomy chapter
eighteen.
15
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your
fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, "Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God
nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die."
17
The Lord said to me: "What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like
you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them
everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my
words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name
anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put
to death."
Deuteronomy 18:15-20 NIV
L:
C:
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Second reading is from the ninth chapter of Acts.

1
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples.
He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he
found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as
prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven
flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute me?"
5
"Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked.
"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. 6 "Now get up and go into the city,
and you will be told what you must do."
7
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not
see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So
they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink
anything.
10
In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision,
"Ananias!"
"Yes, Lord," he answered.
11
The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from
Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and
place his hands on him to restore his sight."
13
"Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm
he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the
chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."
15
But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my
name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he
must suffer for my name."
17
Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said,
"Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has
sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." 18 Immediately, something
like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after
taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20 At once he began to preach in
the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 21 All those who heard him were astonished and
asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And
hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?" 22 Yet Saul grew more and
more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.
23
After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy among the Jews to kill him, 24 but
Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill
him. 25 But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the
wall. Act 9:1-25 NIV

Glory to You, O Lord.
21
They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue
and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one
who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was
possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have
you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
25
"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26 The impure spirit shook the man
violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new
teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him." 28 News
about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. Mark 1:21-28 NIV

(*) APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He
ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From
thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given
thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament
in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you

“Go Tell It On The Mountain” – as follows:
Refrain:
Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus is his name.
He possessed no riches, no home to lay his head;
He fasted in the dessert, he gave to others bread: Refrain
He reached out and touched them, the blind, the deaf, the lame;
He spoke and listened gladly to anyone who came: Refrain
He still comes to people, His life moves through the lands;
He used us for speaking, He touches with our hands: Refrain

MAKING HIM KNOWN TO
THE NATIONS
As we hear of the ministry of Paul during the
month of February, we will be reminded of the
continued opportunity to share the love of Jesus
with all people. During 2015, we have
designated $145,000, about 15% of our total
budget, for ministry beyond our congregation.
During these next weeks, we will highlight some
of the special mission efforts your giving helps
to make possible.
Deaconess Danelle Putnam in the Dominican
Republic Through the Synod’s “Together in
Mission” program, we contribute $1000 per
month towards Danelle’s salary and living
expenses. Many of you had a chance to hear of
her work as a missionary to those with
developmental disabilities when she visited
Redeemer last summer.

(NEW!) Islam
In this class we will explore the religion of
Islam. The religion of Islam has been quite
popular in the news and other media given
our involvement in the Middle East area. It
goes all the way back to when Abraham
told Hagar to leave along with her son
Ishmael. Where did it come from? Does it
have anything in common with
Christianity? How do we witness to those
of Islam in our world today? There are
many questions and myths about the
Islamic religion. Let’s explore those
together and learn exactly what the Islamic
religion teaches to those who follow it.
DCE Intern, Brian Weyers, will lead this
discussion in the North Fellowship Hall.

include you in my personal prayers." Who will the Lord place in your life this week that He

Week of 2-1-2015
February is American Heart Month
Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart, as well as heart defects that
you are born with. The term is often used interchangeably with the term “cardiovascular
disease,” which generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels
that can lead to heart attack, chest pain or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as those that
affect your heart’s muscle, valves or rhythm, are also considered forms of heart disease.
Risk factors for developing heart disease include: age, gender (men are generally at greater
risk; however, women’s risk increases after menopause), family history, smoking, poor diet,
high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, stress,
poor hygiene (not regularly washing your hand and establishing habits that can help prevent
viral or bacterial infections).
Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices.
Redeemer offers the following “here’s to your heart health” opportunity below to discover
how you are doing with one of the risk factors – your cholesterol levels.
Heart Disease information taken from: www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/heart-disease/basics
Cholesterol Screening
Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 15, 8:30 – 10:30 am, in the Fellowship Hall. This

Hymn Notes: “Making Him
Known”
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 PAUL: Making Him Known To The Nations
BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “Then the Lord said tome, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gen les.’” Acts 22:21 NIV POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Which people in the world would you find it most difficult to share the love of Jesus with? Why? If you are not able to do that personally, how might you help those who are working in that mission field? Prayer? Financial Support? Notes of encouragement?
This month we hear about “Making Him Known” to all the na ons. Music has a unique way of marrying the text to a melody so that the Word of God is driven into the hearts of the people. Today we have two newer hymns that are from Kenya (LSB 833) and Spain (LSB 799). The style and language may be a li le different, but one thing that doesn’t change is the message. The message that Christ is the Savior for all people and that we can take joy and comfort in that forgiveness and share that with others! Listen, listen, God is calling Through the Word invi ng, Offering forgiveness, Comfort, and joy. Jesus gave His mandate: Share the good news That He came to save us‐And set us free. Refrain Let none be forgo en ‐ Throughout the world. In the triune name of God ‐ Go and bap ze. Refrain Take it Home As we con nue our “Making Him Known” journey we are now li ing up Paul. If you know anything about the Apostle Paul you know that he was all about Making Christ Known. Most of you may also know that Paul was also known as Saul and was an enemy of Christ! Paul’s life did not get easier but it gained a rich and deep purpose. God calls each of us, some into professional ministry others into the mission field of their job. Many of us have a spouse we are called to serve and many are called to care for children. God calls us to a life of rich and deep purpose. Many of us just have a hard me seeing that. We may say, “My life is boring, that person’s life is really rich, I wish I had what that person has!” This week fight against that thought. Pray that God may open your eyes to see how He is calling you. Embrace God’s call in your life and discover how rich and deep God’s call is! Redeemer Lutheran Church
