Leader Cites Collaboration as Key to Results

February 2015
Leader van den Blink Cites Collaboration as Key to Results
2014 & 2015 Chamber Board Chair Jan van den Blink (The Hilliard Corporation) speaks to the crowd. More photos on page 13.
Not surprisingly, the Chamber’s 109th Annual Meeting on January 15th carried an air of optimism which seemed to
resonate with the more than two hundred members in attendance. After re-electing Chair Jan van den Blink to another
year at the helm, members expected The Hilliard Corporation chief executive to bring a positive message to the podium,
and, once again, he did not disappoint.
Beyond the strong outlook for 2015, however, Mr. van den Blink did share a caveat that the next plateau of prosperity
could only be accomplished by more and stronger partnerships throughout the community. That theme applied to much
of the Chairman’s message to members that evening. Some excerpts:
• “Our collective response to challenges was our own dogged determination to make things right. And to do it
together. As we always have.”
• “We applaud strong, positive Federal and State Manufacturing legislation sponsored by our own Congressman Tom Reed and State Senator Tom O’Mara.”
• “The Elmira Jackals is Downtown’s most exciting development collaborative. Together, we can capture the
promise so many of us still envision, not only for our team but for our community.”
• “This year, let’s envision more airport growth, highway funding, mandate relief, manufacturing jobs, tourism
promotion, shared services. And certainly more high fives and laughter.”
• “We’re not doing all this for the fun of it. There’s too much at stake. We’re doing it because our mission demands it, and our members deserve it.”
Members also enjoyed the insightful presentation of John McPherson, whom affable Emcee Steve Kettelle promised,
“merges the immediate appeal of Humor with the enduring value of Wisdom.”
Led by Presenting Sponsors Chemung Canal Trust Company and Corning Enterprises, along with seventeen additional
supporters, the dinner meeting’s program included the election of eight members of the Board of Directors as well as seven
Officers.

Guest House Fit for Royalty Opens in West Elmira
Perched on a hill in West Elmira is a picture-perfect castle that’s
worthy of a king and queen. Castle on Glen, a 1927 three-bedroom
Tudor home, offers a unique accommodation option for both
tourists and locals looking to get away and experience a bit of royalty!
A stay at this early 20th century castle provides an escape with
Old World charm. Upon arrival, guests cross a bridge over a
“moat” and climb stone steps where they can enter through a turret. Throughout their stay, they can enjoy a fully-stocked
kitchen, piano, a library of classics, and bicycles, alongside modern day comforts like cable TV and hi-speed wireless internet.
There is even a royal wardrobe for those looking to suit up.
For proprietor, Kitty Hall-Thurnheer, owning a castle has been a long held dream. “Fortunately I didn’t have to travel to
Europe to make it come true,” she stated. “Now that it’s been restored, I’d like to share it with others,” she added.
Castle on Glen can be rented by the day, week or month, with a two-day minimum. For more information, or to book
reservations, call 607-272-4576 or email [email protected].
Tanglewood Lodge Set to Open
Reservations are now being taken for renting The Lodge at Tanglewood, located
adjacent to the Tanglewood Nature Center & Museum. The new facility is set to
open this month and will not only provide a year-round space to increase the
group’s classes and camp sessions, but will also bring the community a
breath-taking rental option for meetings, events and weddings. The 2,000 square

foot lodge is constructed in a post-and-beam style to complement its surroundings
and offers spectacular panoramic views of the Chemung River Valley’s rolling hills
and meadows. And in keeping true to Tanglewood’s commitment to green initiatives, sustainable energy will be generated
through roof solar panels to meet the electric needs for the lodge as well as a portion of those for the museum.

Historic Elmira, Inc. and Near Westside Neighborhood Association Announce Grant Award
Historic Elmira, Inc. and Near Westside Neighborhood Association (NWNA) of Elmira are pleased to acknowledge that
they were successful in obtaining a $333,910 grant from the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council and

Eagle Scout Project Hopes to Attract Ospreys
to the Chemung River
The housing market for ospreys on the Chemung River is
improving thanks to a Boy Scout and Friends of the
Chemung River Watershed (River Friends). An osprey
nesting pole and platform were erected Dec. 23 at Bottcher’s
Landing Boat Launch in Big Flats as part of an Eagle Scout
project by 14-year-old Jason Drapikowski, a Boy Scout with
Troop 3097 in Big Flats.
Jason and River Friends hope the nesting platform will be
used by osprey to build a nest and raise young along the
Chemung River. The second phase of Jason’s Eagle Scout
project includes the installation of a pole and nesting
platform at the Dunn Field Boat Launch in Elmira in 2015.
Jason researched, designed and built the nest platform and
secured funding and donations to build the Big Flats
nesting platform. Employees from the Big Flats Department
of Public Works erected the Bottcher’s Landing pole, which
was donated by the Town of Big Flats. The project, valued at
over $3,000, was administered by River Friends, which
provided guidance and secured permits and land-owner
permission to install the pole. Jason got donations of
materials and funds from The Hilliard Corporation, Elmira;
Hale Roofing, Horseheads; Chapel Lumber, Southport; and
the Big Flats Community Days Committee.
