Basics of Effective Sanctions and Incentives
Purpose Plus Innovation = Success
Courtney Kramer and Chrystal Owin
Kerry Plemmons, Clinical Professor
Colorado Division of Criminal Justice
Daniels College of Business, University of Denver
Why do people do what they do and how can we affect behavior change? This
session will discuss the BSMART (Behavioral Shaping Model and Reinforcement
Tool) program basics of responding to violation behavior and contingency
management and the principles, theories and research BSMART is based on.
PREA Training/Discussion
Jim Pyle
Colorado Division of Criminal Justice
This session has been designed to address questions and concerns about PREA
implementation and the PREA audit process. The session will include a brief
review of some PREA standards and requirements and an opportunity to learn
more about the audit process from the perspective of both a certified PREA
auditor and program that successfully completed an audit.
Kerry Plemmons will provide group instruction and education about important
leadership constructs for our field. Kerry will discuss several different leadership
styles and how they can be integrated to maximize our professional and personal
efficacy. He will discuss how the power of adaptive, positive, and future-focused
thinking can and should be used in modern day problem solving. Kerry will talk
about his wealth of experience in working with others to inspire action among our
colleagues. Kerry will provide examples of real world revolutionary and failed
attempts at effective leadership and will challenge the field of community corrections
to be innovative as part of our public safety mission.

What about Effective Interventions with Offending Populations: A
Collaboration, Coopetition, and Great Decisions
Real World Perspective
Kerry Plemmons, Clinical Professor
Alexandra Walker
Daniels College of Business, University of Denver
Time to Change Inc.
A substantial body of research has demonstrated that the use of certain
practices in corrections can have a profound effect on reducing offender
recidivism. But how does that research translate to practice? What can we do to
impact success rates with our clients? This training will review the principles of
the risk/need/responsivity theory as well as the 8 guiding principles for
effective intervention with a focus on their importance and how these principles
can be applied in community corrections in Colorado.
Affordable Care Act/Medicaid for Community Corrections
Christie Donner and Terri Hurst
Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition
The Affordable Care Act has the potential to greatly impact access to health care
services, including behavioral health and dental care, for justice involved
individuals. While many opportunities exist to connect justice involved to care,
people supervised within community corrections face challenges in accessing
health care coverage. CCJRC staff will discuss the basics of health care reform
efforts in Colorado and provide information and resources to counter these
challenges and help connect clients with health care services.
Kerry will lead table discussions and action-learning among our implementation
teams and management. We will build skills in order to be adaptive, innovative,
collaborative, and inspired problem solvers. Implementation teams will
participate in various skill building exercises and discussions that will apply in
our real-world settings. Kerry will challenge all of us to use the spirit of
“Coopetition” in the advancement of our field.

Cynthia Lockwood, Colorado Division of Criminal Justice
Daniels College of Business, University of Denver
This session is designed to give an overview for case managers who are creating
case plans with clients in community corrections. Attendees will learn the basics
of using assessments to case plan with clients as well as review the Eight
Guiding Principles of Effective Interventions, the top 8 criminogenic needs and
the S.M.A.R.T. method of effective case planning. Participants will learn how to
create meaningful, individualized case plans that prioritize criminogenic needs
and address the client’s stage of change.
Stuck in a Rut (The Brain and Habits)
Evan C. Crist, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
President of Correct Tech Inc., and Time to Change Inc.
A user friendly review of the brain literature as it relates to "the offender's
brain." How are their habits formed? What can you to do to help offenders
break those habits? Is the "offender's brain" different from your brain? If
you've ever had a bad habit, you want to attend this session (your spouse called
and said you qualify)!
Kerry Plemmons will facilitate deeper learning and actualization of
transformational leadership. We will begin to operationalize the leadership
material we have learned and experimented with and create a clearer vision for
2020. We will look introspectively, into ourselves and into our organizations, to
find the work needed to achieve our visions for 2020. Finally, the
implementation teams will leave with a deeper and sustainable understanding
of their critical role in achieving the vision of Community Corrections 2020.
