Benjamin F. Hughes, Independent Arbitrator and Mediator
Simon Cartwright, Partner, Holman Fenwick Willan LLP
Benjamin Hughes is an independent arbitrator and mediator based in Seoul and
Hong Kong. Previously he was the founding co-chair of the international dispute
resolution practice group at Shin & Kim, and adjunct professor of law at Korea
University Law School. Mr. Hughes has extensive experience as counsel in
international arbitrations in Asia, Europe and the United States, and under all
major arbitral rules. He has been appointed as the sole, chair or co-arbitrator in
arbitrations under the rules of the ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, CIETAC and KCAB. Mr. Hughes
has been recognized as a leading practitioner in the field of international arbitration
in Chambers Asia-Pacific, Legal 500, PLC Which Lawyer, Who’s Who Legal, the
Global Arbitration Review, Asialaw and Asia Legal Business. Fluent in Korean, Mr.
Hughes has played an active role as an advisor to the KCAB and the Korean Bar
Association. In October 2011, Mayor Won-Soon Park made Mr. Hughes an Honorary
Citizen of Seoul in recognition of his contributions to the legal community.

Dr. Habib Al Mulla, Chairman of the DIAC Board of Trustees and Partner,
Baker & McKenzie Habib Al Mulla, Dubai, UAE
Dr Habib is one of the UAE’s most highly respected legal authorities. He has over
29 years’ experience in UAE law and has drafted many of the modern legislative
structures in place in Dubai today. Dr Habib is a strong advocate for the improvement
and modernisation of UAE Laws. He is a frequent commentator on the legislation
and economy of the UAE and is often consulted to draft and advise on Federal and
Emirate level laws. Dr Habib focuses his practice on litigation and arbitration. He
is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Dubai International Arbitration
Centre (DIAC) and is Chairman of the CIArb (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators) UAE
Committee. He created the concept of financial free zones in the UAE and was
the architect of the legal framework establishing the Dubai International Financial
Centre (DIFC), the first financial free zone in the UAE. Dr Habib also served as
Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Dubai Financial Services Authority
(DFSA). Dr Habib has been lead counsel on numerous UAE and international
arbitrations across a variety of sectors including construction, finance, commerce
and maritime, as both counselor or expert witness. He is experienced in many
arbitration rules including the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC),
the Abu Dhabi Conciliation and Commercial Arbitration Centre (ADCCAC), the
International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Centre, the LCIA and the ICSID.
Dr Habib is regularly appointed as a party nominated expert and court expert
in domestic and international arbitration proceedings for his expert opinion on
matters relating to UAE law.
Derrick Dale QC, Barrister, Fountain Court
Derrick Dale QC is a barrister at Fountain Court with a practice covering commercial
disputes, civil fraud, banking, insurance and professional negligence. Since taking
silk in 2010 he has become increasingly part of the international arbitration scene.
Specifically, in the last year he appeared in numerous arbitral court challenges
in the Commercial Court in London which have raised important points of law
in the areas of (i) whether a an arbitral award with a “show cause” provision is
sufficiently certain (KCM v U&M [2014] EWHC 2374); (ii) the circumstances in which
the English Court will grant a worldwide freezing injunction notwithstanding the
existence of an exclusive enforcement jurisdiction clause in favour of the Zambian
courts (U&M v KCM [2014] EWHC 3250); (iii) the test as to when a party making a
court challenge to the arbitral award should be required to pay as security the full
amount due under the award as a condition of making the challenge to the award;
(KCM v U&M [2014] EWHC 2145. Derrick also sits as an LCIA arbitrator.
Alec Emmerson, Consultant, Clyde and Co, Middle East Disputes Expert
Alec was a Partner of Clyde & Co in Guildford, Hong Kong, London and Dubai for
30 years and remains in Dubai as a consultant with the Firm. He has acted as party
counsel in numerous ICC, LCIA, SCMA, CIETAC, DIAC,ADCCAC, AAA, UNCITRAL,CAMM
and ad hoc arbitrations involving international trade, joint ventures, insurance/
reinsurance, property, telecommunications, infrastructure, energy and shipping/
ship building. Since becoming a consultant 6 years ago he has become well known
as an international arbitrator accepting appointments as Chair, Co-Arbitrator and
Sole Arbitrator in a similar range of disputes mainly involving parties in Europe,
Middle East, India and Asia. In 2011 a leading directory described Alec as “disputes
Czar….” and he is recognised in GAR, Chambers, Who’s Who Legal and other
publications as an arbitrator and mediator. He speaks regularly at conferences
and on business radio as well as writing on arbitration topics.
Victor P. Leginsky, Chartered Arbitrator B.Ed., J.D., FCIArb
Victor P. Leginsky, Canadian citizen, is an experienced international arbitrator
and Barrister & Solicitor, resident in Dubai, UAE since April 2007. Victor has prior
high-level mediation experience having been appointed by the Attorney General of
British Columbia, Canada, to be the Chair of the Manufactured Home Park Dispute
Resolution Committee. He brings over 25 years of arbitration experience in Canada.
Victor has earned the internationally-recognized designations of Chartered
Arbitrator and Fellow from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is a committee
member of the International Court of Arbitration (ICC) – UAE and member of
ICC-Canada. He is alternate regional chapter co-ordinator of the Association of
International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN) and launched its seminar on oil & gas
dispute resolution in the Middle East. He co-instructs, with Prof. Dr. Klaus Peter
Berger a practical course in International Commercial Arbitration in Dubai. He is
registered as a Barrister with the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts
and is a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, Canada.
Simon joined the Dubai office in August 2006. He has rights of audience to appear and
conduct cases before the DIFC courts. He is qualified as a solicitor in England and in
New Zealand. He regularly handles matters in international arbitral forums and the
English High Courts.
Simon is ranked in both the Legal 500 EMEA and Chambers Global legal directories,
highly recommended for his shipping work and praised for his “strong shipping
knowledge” and “practical commercial solutions”.
James Fox, Senior Associate, Clyde & Co
James Fox is a Senior Associate at Clyde & Co in the UAE, where he has been based
for the last 7 years. He previously practiced in England and is a solicitor of the
Supreme Court of England and Wales.
James has extensive experience in resolving complex, high value disputes
conducted under the rules of ADCCAC, DIAC, DIFC-LCIA, ICC, LCIA and before the
UAE and English Courts. James has a broad corporate and commercial disputes
practice and his clients include leading companies in the defence, energy and
finance sectors.

Nassif BouMalhab, Partner, Clyde & Co
Nassif BouMalhab is a barrister and solicitor, and a Partner in Clyde & Co’s Middle
East Dispute Resolution Group based in the Dubai office. He practises corporate
and commercial litigation and arbitration with an emphasis on shareholder, joint
venture, agency, distribution, banking, finance and real estate disputes, and
financial crimes. Nassif represents a wide range of businesses, including financial
institutions and leading multinational companies in the leisure and hospitality,
energy, transport and logistics sectors.
Nassif is listed amongst Asian-MENA Counsel’s External Counsel of the Year 2013
for the United Arab Emirates as voted by the In-House Community, where in-house
counsel is reported to have said “[Nassif] is the best arbitration lawyer”.

Christopher Grout, Registrar, Qatar International Court and
Dispute Resolution Centre
Christopher has been based at the QICDRC in Doha for just over one year. As
Registrar, he is head of the Registry that services both the Qatar International
Court and the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Tribunal. He also manages the
Dispute Resolution Centre which, over the past year, has played host to a number
of arbitrations and mediations where, in the case of arbitrations, the seat has
been the State of Qatar. In addition, the Qatar International Court exercises
judicial oversight where the seat of the arbitration is the Qatar Financial Centre
and so this too falls within Christopher’s remit. More specifically, Christopher is
responsible for the management aspects of the Centre and in particular the case
management of cases that come before the Court and Tribunal. Where required,
Christopher will provide procedural directions in relation to cases and, along with
his team, will be available to assist parties with any queries they may have in
relation to the workings of the Centre. Amongst other things, he chairs a number
of QICDRC-user committees, actively engages with the development of legal and
judicial education and training in the State of Qatar and provides ad-hoc lectures
at a number of universities both in Qatar and the United Kingdom. Furthermore,
Christopher is a practicing barrister in England and Wales at 15 New Bridge
Street, the Chambers of David Aarongberg QC and James Mulholland QC, having
been called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 2007. Christopher’s main specialism
is in the field of crime where he regularly defends across a broad spectrum of
criminal offences.
S. Ravi Shankar, Senior Partner, Lawsenate
S. Ravi Shankar is an International arbitration lawyer practising in the field of
arbitration and corporate dispute resolution. He is a Senior Partner in the New
Delhi based Lawsenate law firm. He is a qualified Advocate on Record in the
Supreme Court of India. He is also the President of “Arbitration Association of
India” which is a national body of practitioners, arbitrators and users. He is holding
a Post graduate degree in Business Administration and a degree in the field of law.
He is having about 20 years of experience in the field of dispute resolution and
has travelled across the globe on various assignments. He has published various
publications in the field of law particularly in the field of Arbitration. He also has
addressed various international and domestic conferences in the field of Dispute
resolution. He has handled various high value arbitrations and litigations in India
and outside India. He is an active member of various international professional
organisations including IBA, ICCA, IAA, IAI, AAI etc.,

Heba Osman, Partner, Ibrahim Law Firm
Heba specialises in construction and engineering law; with a wide practice in
advising governmental bodies, private developers, contractors, engineering
firms and sub-contractors on all project stages; including project procurement,
tendering, contract documentation, claims management and dispute resolution.
Heba also has considerable experience in engineering and construction arbitrations
and represents clients in DIAC, ICC, ICSID, CRCICA and ad-hoc arbitrations.
Additionally, she has a broad experience dealing with various general commercial
law and corporate issues in the MENA Region. Heba practices law in English and
Arabic. She also holds an LLM degree in international trade law from Maastricht
University and is a regular speaker in legal conferences, primarily talking about
arbitration, real estate and construction law. Heba also sits as an arbitrator on
MENA real estate and construction disputes.
Nicholas Gould, Partner, Fenwick Elliott LLP
Nicholas conducts a mix of contract drafting, strategic project advice and dispute
resolution work. He acts in a wide range of construction sectors in the UK and
internationally, including general construction, transport, communications,
industrial, process plant, petrochemical, and energy. Dispute resolution experience
spans litigation, arbitration (domestic and international), adjudication, DAB/DRB,
mediation, early neutral evaluation and expert determination. He regularly acts
as a mediator in construction, engineering and commercial disputes, and sits as
adjudicator on international Dispute Adjudication Boards and as arbitrator.
Robert Karrar-Lewsley, Barrister & Senior Associate, Al Tamimi & Company
Robert is a barrister and Senior Associate in the arbitration team of Al Tamimi &
Company (DIFC office). He regularly advises and represents clients in high-value
international and domestic arbitrations relating to commercial, construction and
property disputes under various institutions (including the ICC, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC
and ADCCAC). His clients include government entities, multi-national companies,
real estate
developers, and investors. Robert studied law at the London School of Economics
(2003, LLB Hons first class), winning prizes in business law and jurisprudence.
He was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2004 and practised in chambers
before moving to Dubai in 2009. In addition to his arbitration practice Robert also
represents clients before the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts.
Ruth Stackpool-Moore, Managing Counsel, HKIAC
Ruth is an Australian and UK qualified lawyer working as Managing Counsel of
the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). She oversees the
administration of arbitrations and other forms of dispute resolution proceedings
at the HKIAC and works to promote the use of Hong Kong arbitration and other
forms of dispute resolution worldwide. Prior to joining the HKIAC, Ruth worked
with several international law firms in London, Sydney and Paris advising on a wide
range of proceedings including international commercial arbitrations conducted
under the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, ICDR, VIAC and WIPO rules of arbitration as well
as associated national court proceedings in civil and common law jurisdictions.
She also provided advice regarding the formulation and drafting of arbitration
and dispute resolution clauses in commercial contracts, including multi-party and
multi-contract situations. Ruth graduated from the University of Sydney with a
Bachelor of Economics (Social Science) in 2001 and a Bachelor of Laws (First Class
Hons) in 2005. She was admitted as solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South
of Wales and High Court of Australia in 2006 and in England and Wales in 2010.
Halil Ercüment Erdem, Senior Partner, Erdem & Erdem Law Office, Turkey;
Professor (E.) of Commercial Law, Galatasaray University
He is the Senior Partner of Erdem & Erdem Law Office in Istanbul and Izmir, Turkey
and Professor (E.) of Commercial Law at Galatasaray University (Istanbul). He
holds a LLM from Ankara University (1986 with honours) and Ph.D from University
of Fribourg (1990).
H. Ercument Erdem is the member of Istanbul Bar Association, the Vice–Chair of the
ICC Commission on Commercial Law and Practice and Member of the ICC Incoterms
Experts Group, the Council Member of the ICC Institute of World Business Law
and the Member of the ICC Turkish National Committee Arbitration, the Council
Member of Association Henri Capitant des Amis de la Culture Juridique Française,
the Advisory Council of Banking and Commercial Law Research Institute, the
President of Mergers and Acquisitions Commission of the Competition Association
Advisory Board, Association Suisse de l’Arbitrage (ASA) and International Bar
Association (IBA).
He specializes in the field of international commercial law, competition law and
arbitration and has published several books and articles on these issues. He acts
as sole arbitrator, chairman, co-arbitrator or counsel in numerous cases under
different arbitration rules (ICC, UNCITRAL, SRIA, AAA, TRAC, Istanbul Chamber of
Commerce, Ad Hoc). Prof Dr Erdem has collaborated for many years with the ICC
and has actively participated in several ICC Task Forces, drafting model contracts
for international business (e.g. agency, distribution, confidentiality, mergers &
acquisition, occasional intermediaries, Incoterms).
Nebahat Arslan, Head of Dispute Resolution & Litigation,

Nebahat is a solicitor advocate in England and Wales. Nebahat is the head of
Dispute Resolution & Litigation team at Blavo and Co Solicitors, based in Central
London, which has 17 offices nationwide. Nebahat focuses on international, crossborder litigation and commercial arbitration. She regularly acts for oil and gas
merchandises, Blue Chip companies in the UK, Turkey, Qatar, and India. In addition
to her commercial work, Nebahat’s experience extends to variety of matters
including brand protection and deals with IP infringements.

Sami Houerbi is the Director of the ICC Eastern Mediterranean, Middle-East and
Africa ICC Dispute Resolution Services, where he is in charge of raising awareness
about Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms throughout the region and
promoting ICC Arbitration and ADR Rules. Prior to that, he was member of the
Secretariat of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris, where he was
directly involved in the administration and managing ICC arbitration proceedings.
Mr Houerbi is a registered lawyer of the Tunis Bar Association and the Head of the
Arbitration Department at Boussayene Knani Houerbi Law firm (www.bkhassocies.
com), which areas of practice include mainly: Corporate Law, Arbitration
and Litigation. He holds a post-graduate degree in international law from the
University of Paris II and an LL.M in German Law from the Ludwig-Maximilian

Paul Menzies QC is a barrister, mediator, and arbitrator practising principally from
12 Wentworth Selborne Chambers in Sydney, Australia. Mr Menzies was called
to the Bar in 1973, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988. His practice
as a barrister covers the spectrum of all superior courts in Australia from trial
to appellate level, with particular emphasis on Public Law, Administrative and
Constitutional Law, Commercial Law and complex Common Law disputes. He
has a particular affinity with disputes concerning the executive Government. In

Patrick is Senior Legal Counsel in Dutco Group’s construction, infrastructure and
engineering division which comprises Dutco Balfour Beatty LLC, BK Gulf LLC, Dutco
Construction LLC, Dutco McConnell Dowell ME LLC, Gulf Cobla LLC, Dutco Styles &

Matthew J. Christensen is a Senior Foreign Attorney in the International Arbitration
& Litigation Practice Group of Bae, Kim & Lee LLC, where he has acted for a broad
range of public and private sector clients in dozens of substantial international
arbitrations under various institutional rules. A member of the New York State Bar
Association, Matthew has been recognized as one of the leading dispute resolution
practitioners in Korea by Who’s Who Legal and Chambers Asia-Pacific, where he is
described as an “excellent interface between the Korean legal system and foreign
clients.” His professional activities including serving as Chair of the Council for
International Arbitration of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board, as a ViceChair of the International Construction Projects Committee of the Inter-Pacific
Bar Association, as a Member of the IBA-APAG Working Group on Initiatives for
Harmonizing Arbitration Rules and Practices, and as a Member of the Executive
Committee of the Seoul International Dispute Resolution Center. Matthew received

Inam Y. Siddiqui, General Counsel, GE Oil & Gas for MENAT region
Inam provides advice, support and training to the business on a wide range of
issues, including commercial contract drafting, compliance matters, internal
investigations, employment, legal entity management, corporate governance
and commercial disputes. When he was in private practice with Clifford Chance,
he represented multinational companies in several international arbitrations,
including a significant case involving European and Middle Eastern government
bodies in dispute over a major military purchase.
Sameer Huda, Head of Corporate, Hadef & Partners
Sameer heads our Corporate, M&A and Private Equity teams in Dubai. He advises clients
on all aspects of M&A, private equity and general corporate and commercial work.
Known for his strong problem solving skills, Sameer works directly with clients to
ensure that transactions are well structured at the outset from both a strategic
and commercial perspective to achieve their commercial objectives. Sameer has
played a major role in many of the UAE’s innovative and challenging transactions
and is noted in directories as a market leader.
Sameer trained with Denton Wilde Sapte and was previously within the corporate
department of Eversheds LLP in London. He holds a BSc (Hons) Mathematics with
Management from Imperial College, United Kingdom, a Common Professional
Examination has completed the Legal Practice Course, both from the College of
Law, United Kingdom, and has been admitted as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of
England and Wales since 1998. Sameer is an Officer of the Corporate Law Section
of the International Bar Association.
Melissa Quai Currie, Partner, Hadef & Partners
Melissa is a Partner in our Dispute Resolution team advising on commercial disputes.
She has specialised in complex, often cross-border, arbitration and litigation. She
has worked in London, Moscow, Perth and Dubai on many multi-jurisdictional
disputes and is experienced in resolving disputes in emerging markets.
Melissa has acted for major international corporations and banks in commercial,
corporate, real estate, investment, finance and energy & resources (including
commodity pricing) disputes.
Her international arbitration experience includes representing clients in ad hoc
and institutional arbitrations. She has represented clients in arbitrations under
the LCIA, ICC, DIAC, SCC and UNCITRAL Rules.
Melissa has assisted clients with interim injunctions sought in support of
arbitrations as well as injunctions sought in offshore jurisdictions.
Prior to joining Hadef & Partners Melissa was a Senior Associate with Clifford
Chance’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice in Moscow and Perth.
She is admitted to practice in England & Wales and Australia (the High Court and

Pierre Heitzmann, Of Counsel, Jones Day
Pierre Heitzmann is Of Counsel in the Dubai office of Jones Day. Trained in civil and
common law jurisdictions, his main area of practice is international arbitration.
Over the last 20 years, he has acted as arbitrator and counsel in many international
arbitration proceedings including but not limited to ICC, DIAC, SCC, and UNCITRAL
proceedings involving private companies, sovereigns, and state-owned entities
and mainly arising out of construction contracts, energy supply agreements,
license agreements, post-merger and acquisition disputes, shareholders’ and
joint venture agreements, agreements for the sale of goods, agency agreement,
distribution agreements. Pierre is registered with the Paris Bar, as foreign legal
consultant in Dubai and as a DIFC Courts Registered Practitioner (Part 2). The Legal
500 has described Pierre as a ‘very reactive and tenacious’ attorney, showing a
‘deep understanding of the financial and technical elements in a case’ combined
