oldiers braved the frigid weather this past weekend at CFB Borden as part of their
training for a mission to Nunavut. Exercise FRIGID FORRESTER saw over 100
soldiers taking part in a weekend-long training exercise where they were outdoors
the entire time.
“It’s an opportunity to test their equipment, to make sure their tents are operational and
ready to go,” commented Capt Carrie Pluck. “That their stoves are going to work, and to
get the confidence in their clothing, so when they go up there they are confident they are
going to be warm and they are going to survive up in those temperatures.”
The Soldiers will be deploying for their mission in Resolute Bay, Nunavut in the High
Arctic in March of this year. Good luck and stay warm!

L’Opération FRIGID FORRESTER a amené plus de 100 soldats à Borden. Ces
derniers ont participé à un exercice d’entraînement et sont restés à l’extérieur pendant toute
la fin de semaine.
« C’est l’occasion de mettre leur équipement à l’épreuve, de s’assurer que leurs tentes
sont fonctionnelles et prêtes au déploiement, » a commenté le Capt Carrie Pluck. « Que
leurs réchauds fonctionnent et qu’ils ont confiance en leur habillement. De cette façon, une
fois là-bas, ils sauront que leurs vêtements les tiendront au chaud et qu’ils pourront survivre
dans ces températures extrêmes ».
Les soldats se rendront en mission à Resolute Bay, au Nunavut, dans le Haut-Arctique
en mars de cette année. Bonne chance et restez bien au chaud!

On Friday, January 30th, the Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and
Minister of Status of Women, joined Base Borden Commander, Colonel Carl
Doyon, and Chief Warrant Officer, Gilles Godbout, at a gathering with Simcoe
County’s leadership to talk about Base Borden and its 2016 Centennial preparations. Many local Mayors and Honorary Colonels attended as well, demonstrating
their strong support to the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Military Second Language Training
Programme and Distance Tutoring for
2015/16
Military personnel wishing to register for the spring session are reminded that French
and English Second Language Training are offered in classroom on a full-time or part
time basis. The spring session will start the week of April 7, 2015. The registration deadline for the spring session is Mar 6, 2015.
Second Language Training is also offered through distance tutoring. This training is
done online from your office or from home. Military personnel wishing to register for
distance tutoring can apply at any time.

pretty interesting and fun out here.”
The first station is setup. The
QL3’s practice putting up the self-contained field kitchen trailer, adhering to
safety procedures, and then taking it
down again. Speed is important when
you have many mouths to feed, and
with anywhere from 150-5,000 dinners on regular deployment, practice
makes perfect. One kitchen trailer can
feed up to 150, but 5000 needs about
10 trailers with 40 cooks working
around the clock.
“It’s a quick setup if you are well
organized, and that’s the key. You
have to be very organized and have
the right person that knows and has a
lot of experience. It goes from how
you pack your goods on the trailers,”
explains PO2 Incitti. “I put the soup
and coffee right at the front, so as soon
as we opened that door, hauled it out,
trailers were up, soup and coffee was
on and the guys were already grilling
the pork chops for supper, after about
45 minutes. You base your menu on
that too, so if you know you are going
to be feeding right away, you do something fast fry, something that’s simple
and easy to cook right away.”
With the training occurring in the
winter, the students had the perfect
opportunity to overcome winter challenges: the propane that runs the ovens
freezing, the brutal temperatures, and
a series of safety challenges. As the
ground melts from the heat of the
cooking, floors in modular tents need
to be re-leveled to keep things safe and
secure. Summer brings its own challenges, with the hot temperatures and
prolific mosquito populations.
Alongside the kitchen trailers, a
bake shop, salad room, pot cleaning
room and dining room are setup in different modular tents. A water buffalo
unit provides the only potable water,
while an immersion heater provides
the only hot water. A refridgerator
truck run off a generator keeps food
fresh at 4 C.
“In the field right now, our biggest
challenge is that everyone is in and out
of the refridgerator truck,” explained
MS Mahlenbrei, Instructor. “When it
gets to -20 or -30 C we have to be vigilant, making sure that they don’t keep
the door open too long, that they get

S’il faut nourrir des personnes tout de
suite, il faut alors préparer quelque
chose qui se grille rapidement,
quelque chose de simple et de facile à
cuire. »
Lorsque l’instruction a lieu pendant l’hiver, les stagiaires ont l’occa-
sion parfaite pour faire face aux défis
de l’hiver : le propane qui alimente les
fours gèle, les températures brutales et
une série d’enjeux de sécurité. Au fur
et à mesure que le sol dégèle sous la
chaleur de la cuisson, les planchers
des tentes modulaires doivent être
remis au niveau pour que tout soit sûr
et sécuritaire. L’été apporte son lot de
défis, avec des températures élevées et
les nuages de moustiques.
En plus des cuisines mobiles de
campagne, une boulangerie, une salle
des salades, une salle de vaisselle et
une salle à manger sont montées dans
diverses tentes modulaires. Une
citerne fournit la seule eau potable
dans le camp et un thermoplongeur
fournit l’eau chaude. Un camion
réfrigéré alimenté par une génératrice
conserve la nourriture à 4 C.
« En campagne, le plus grand défi
du moment est de faire en sorte que
chacun entre et sort rapidement du
camion réfrigéré », explique le Matc
Mahlenbrei, instructeur. « Lorsque la
température descend à -20 ou à -30, il
faut être vigilant, et ne pas laisser la
porte ouverte trop longtemps. Il faut
entrer, prendre ce dont on a besoin et

field, I am brand new to the trade,”
commented Pte. Grierson, “It’s interesting and a lot different from the
kitchen. Here you have to improvise;
especially on the kitchen trailer I
found, which was totally different
from the kitchen. You are really confined in a small space, whereas in the
kitchen you have lots of space to work
and put things. You really have to
think about here. I like both setups.”
Improvisation and multifunction
are huge in the field, where they limited by what they can carry.
“The biggest difference between a
field kitchen and a regular kitchen is
multifunction,” explains Incitti. “On a
field kitchen, all you have are burners
and those burners can do multiple
things. You only have two ovens on
board a kitchen trailer and you have
burner plates, grill plates that go over
top of the burners, those burners
become the steam line, everything is
compact. Multitasking is a big winner
in the field.”
These cooks train hard and have
become masters of improvisation and
multifunction as they endeavor to feed
our forces. Were they successful? Just
ask your stomach! Yum!

le groupe professionnel », a commenté le Sdt Grierson. « C’est intéressant
et très différent d’une cuisine. Ici, il
faut improviser; en particulier dans la
cuisine roulante où tout est totalement
différent d’une cuisine intérieure.
Nous sommes confinés à un petit
espace, alors que dans une cuisine,
nous avons beaucoup d’espace pour
travailler et où placer les choses. Il
faut vraiment penser à tout ici, mais
j’aime bien les deux situations. »
L’improvisation et la polyvalence
sont primordiales en campagne où
chacun est limité par ce qu’il peut
transporter.
« La chose la plus différente entre
une cuisine de campagne et une cuisine ordinaire est la polyvalence »,
explique M 2 Incitti. « Dans une cuisine de campagne, vous ne disposez
que de brûleurs et ces brûleurs peuvent faire plusieurs choses. Il n’y a
que deux fours dans la cuisine mobile,
mais il y a des plaques chauffantes et
des grils qui vont par-dessus les

that didn’t stop the
Canadian Forces Logistics
Training Centre (CFLTC),
who braved the elements to
celebrate their birthday!
February 1st marked the
47th anniversary of CFLTC,
prompting a gathering of
Logisticians at CFLTC’s
Transport School. Inside,
the music was rocking and
the deafening noise of hundreds
of
socializing
Logisticians filled the air as
people retreated from the
cold to warm up between
activities. A free hotdog
lunch and cake were offered
to fill bellies, and while they
ate, a Logistics trivia match
was underway.

“It’s a lot of fun, everybody’s participating and
there’s good morale,” commented Logistician, MS
Loughead. “Even though
it’s cold everyone is having
lots of fun. They have specific teams playing and we
are here to cheer to everybody on!”
Whether cheering on
their favorites or participating in the activities, there
were lots of cold and red,
but happy faces. Some of
the events brought a few
laughs, such as the crazy
snow diving during bucket
ball as the players grabbed
for the ball, and during the
group ski races, where a
team of participants jumped
on the same set of skis and
relayed up and down the
course as they tried not to
fall off the skis.
“I enjoyed it,” commented participant, Capt Doan.
“It was a little challenging
because of the cold, but it’s
fun. I just did the ski walk, it
was easy actually, but we
had a good team. When you
stop it’s a little harder, but
once you get going the

un hot dog et un morceau de gâteau pour
faire le plein tout en participant à un jeuquestionnaire endiablé portant sur la logistique.
À l’extérieur, les logisticiens bougeaient,
s’adonnant au soccer en mukluk, au ballonpoubelle et à des courses sur planche, de ski
en groupe et une course de la chaîne de
commandement.
« C’est très amusant. Tout le monde participe et le moral est bon. Même s’il fait
froid, tout le monde s’amuse », a commenté
le Matc Loughead. « Les équipes sont formées et nous sommes là pour encourager
tout le monde! »
Certains encourageaient leurs équipes
préférées alors que d’autres participaient
aux activités, mais tous les visages étaient
froids et rouges, mais souriants. Certaines
activités ont suscité quelques rires, comme

work in other sections,”

course, to have a great

difficile à cause du froid, mais c’était amusant. J’ai participé à la marche en ski. En
fait, c’était plus facile, mais il faut dire que
nous avions une bonne équipe. S’arrêter est
plus difficile, mais lorsqu’on atteint un certain rythme, tout roule. »
Somme toute, chacun a eu du bon temps.
Beaucoup de plaisir et de divertissement au
menu pour ce groupe de travailleurs
acharnés.
« Nous organisons ces activités pour
souligner l’anniversaire de notre section et
pour permettre aux logisticiens de se réunir,
d’avoir du bon temps et de revoir les amis
qui travaillent dans d’autres sections » a
expliqué l’Adjum Fulljames, SM du CILFC.
« Et naturellement, pour nous amuser! »

Colonel Yve Thomson, the Commander of the Air Force Training Centre, recently presented Major Andrea Sloan with an Air Force Training Centre Commander’s Coin.
Maj. Sloan, who is the16 Wing Air Reserve Flight Commanding Officer, is also the first 16
Wing member to be awarded the AFTC coin.
The accompanying write up for the presentation reads:
‘Major Andrea Sloan’s immediate unwavering effort and attention to detail played a critical role ensuring that essential funding for CFSSAR’s PRes staff was obtained; thus
allowing the timely reintegration of the SAR Tech Confined Space Rescue Dive (CSRD)
training to the SAR Tech community. Her outstanding administrative actions allowed the
mandated training to be completed by dedicated staff that were not overtasked with other
responsibilities, thus providing the most comprehensive training experience for the attendees.’

Le colonel Yve Thomson, commandant du Centre d’instruction de la Force aérienne, a
récemment remis au major Andrea Sloan le médaillon du commandant du Centre d’instruction de la Force aérienne.
Le Maj Sloan, qui exerce les fonctions de commandant de l’Escadrille de la Réserve
aérienne de la 16e Escadre, est le premier membre de la 16e Escadre à recevoir le
médaillon.
Le texte d’accompagnement du médaillon est le suivant :
« Grâce à ses efforts immédiats et assidus et à son souci du détail, le Major Andrea
Sloan a joué un rôle crucial dans l’obtention du financement pour le personnel de la P
rés de l’ERSFC. Il a ainsi permis la réintégration rapide de l’instruction de plongée de
sauvetage en espace clos des Tech SAR. Les mesures administratives exceptionnelles
qu’il a prises ont permis au personnel dévoué de suivre l’instruction obligatoire sans être

CFB Borden Commander, Col Doyon, along with Simcoe-Grey MP Kellie Leitch,
joined many local families at the Andy Anderson Arena on Saturday, January 31 for
an afternoon of skating. This free skate was a way to welcome everyone back after
the Holiday leave, it was a chance to kick-off the New Year with a family activity that
promotes healthy living.

November 2014
rivate Thibodeau was recently tasked to the BBOM while awaiting his
Developmental Period 1 course. While employed there, he was especially helpful
to the Mess Manager. He took a great of pride in his work and paid exceptional
attention to detail. When the mess was short staffed, he often volunteered to work late or
come in early to assist with the set-up or tear down of special events. He always took great
pride in his work and sought out information to ensure all tasks were completed in a timely and professional manner.
As a member of the RCEME School Ironman team, Private Thibodeau was a keen and
consistent performer who eagerly attended all pre-event training and put forth maximum
effort at all times. This dedication paid off as he was the top RCEME School participant,
finishing in an impressive time of 7 hours, 30 minutes; placing him 32 of 195 participants
(a very good result for someone who had never participated in this event).
Private Thibodeau is awarded Apprentice of the Month for his hard work and dedication,
not only to his primary duty, but also sacrificing countless hours to represent the RCEME
School with pride.
