KATHY’S KORNER
Hello Everyone,
The January meeting was so busy and full of
information for everyone and our lovely speaker,
Sue Rasmussen was so entertaining to finish the
night. What a great meeting!
The hilarious, Nick Coman will join us next
month to show his latest works.
Lots of things will be happening in the next few
months SFVQA is forming committee’s for the
budget and nominating committee and preparing for
the 2015 QIV Quilt Show. We have 5 months to
prepare for the best of ever Quilt Show and we
need everyone to make it as great as know it can be.
So sorry! Quilt University was cancelled due to
the lack of enthusiasm and participation. I only had
12 responses out the 177 SFVQA members to the
questionnaire, I handed out in October &
November. If you want events and programs to
continue you must get involved. I was the most
disappointed.
Kathy Milbrand
SFVQA President
Veteran's Quilt Workshop,
Veterans Workshops are back in full swing again. We meet on
the third Tuesday of every month from 10-3 at the VA Campus
located at the corner of Woodley and Plummer. We meet in
building 22 in the Recreation Room. All are welcome. If you
would like to sew a quilt top, bring a sewing machine, otherwise, all supplies are provided for tying and labeling quilts. For
further information, call or email me.
Hugs,
Karen Van Den Brink,
818 344-8470 [email protected]
5 Minute Tips: My plan to educate our members is to have a 5
minute tip and technic taught to you by one of our members at
our monthly meeting. The tip does not need to be something they
created but, something useful and helpful. And we will give
credit to the quilter and their web-site information. If you believe
you can present a 5 minute tip please contact Kathy at
[email protected].

2016 Opportunity Quilt
News from workshops
Hi Everyone. For February 8th. We have added the
wonderful Jean Impey who will be teaching her exciting
spider web class. I know many of you will
be interested in making this beautiful quilt.
In the class we will be able to finish four
blocks. That would be a 20” pillow. If you
wish to continue you can then make a lap or
bed quilt. So please join us.
For March 8, we will have Wendy
Mathson who will be teaching her Storm at
Sea Variation. I understand that she is a
wonderful teacher. So please consider in
learning how to make the Storm at Sea
block.
Wendy has created many wonderful
variations of this block that you will be able
to use for many new quilts to add to your
collection.
Lots of fun things are happening in our SFVQG Workshops.
So give me a call if you would like to join in the fun. Both
Workshops will be at the wonderful MEND Facility. My
number is 818 700 8173, so please call me and schedule a
workshop with Jean Impey or Wendy Mathson.
I remain your ever dedicated,
Workshop Chair
Jamie Roffredo
And the winner is # 12 !!
Thank you everyone for casting your
vote and getting "kissed" afterwards!
The quilt construction crew will have
its first meeting next week to get
started on it.

May Library Quilt Exhibit
Our annual library quilt exhibit will be happening the month of
May. This is always a popular exhibit at the library and a great
way to advertise the quilt show.
The library has 3 side by side locked cabinets that are 30" wide
and 5 feet long. We request quilts that are 28" wide or less. We
usually show about 13-15 quilts and we would like you to
bring them to the February or March meeting. They will be
returned at the June meeting.
Feel free to call Marty or me if you have any questions.
Thanks in advance.

The SFVQA Great Finishing Quilt Off has come to a happy end.
On Monday, Dec 8 the winning ticket was drawn and MARY
MULCAHEY was announced the winner.
There were 59 SFVQA members in our year long challenge. As
a group we finished 245 quilts that had been started prior to
January 1, 2014. This means on average we finished
4.15254237288 quilts each. Way to go quilters! Of course,
there were some who finished more than 4 (Pat Rosemary with
13) and then there were some who were happy to have finished
one quilt. It is a wonderful accomplishment, congratulations
everyone!

Holiday Party
Quilt Show Bouque
This is the month of HEART-felt THANKS! Yes, I know the
Holiday Party was two months ago, but now is my chance to
thank the unsung heroes of the evening. The wonderfully helpful
people who showed up early to jump in and help the committee
chairs and the crews. Those that volunteered to help the chairs,
even before the evening began, as part of their crew. On that
evening and before, thanks to the ladies who sold the raffle tickets, who sat at the registration table, who made special trips to
give out the solicitation letters and then go back and collect the
goodies, to those who brought their beautiful quilts to share with
all of us, AND those who stayed to help clean up! Thanks for
your efforts, dedication, and follow-through. I know that I can
count on all of you for the 2015 Party...right? Because of the
Chairs, their committees, and YOU, being Chair for Holiday Party was a piece of chocolate cake! Carole Mingus
The quilt show will be here before we know it! Time to get
started making boutique items. We did so well at our September
boutique, let's continue to make a good showing. If you have any
questions call me or see me at the meeting.
Thanks
Joanne Milbrand

2014 Doll Blanket Report
With sincerest thanks to all who participated in donating doll
blankets during the year, here are the results. We furnished the
San Fernando Valley Woodworkers 80 blankets for their handmade wooden cradles for charity. VQG did an outstanding job
bringing the total to 247 blankets. There were 230 cradles donated this year. We have 17 left to get us going for holiday
2015. A few very small sizes were not usable in cradles so
were added to the Meals-on-Wheels for placemats. This is an
ongoing project and I will receive blankets any time. The ideal
size is 18x24 inches, or 24 inches square.
The 11 receiving agencies were as follows:
Haven Hills Batterred Women's Shelter, Canoga Park
Family Rescue Center,Canoga Park
Mormon Church, La Canada
Cloud & Family Ministries, North Hills
Safe Passage Emergency Shelter for Women, Van Nuys
Assistance League of Southern Calif.- Hilltoppers,
Northridge
Lutheran Social Services, Ascension Lutheran Church,
Thousand Oaks
Jewish Family Service of L. A., Sherman Oaks
L.A. Dept of Family and Children Services
Alexandria House Shelter
New Family Rescue Center
The Woodworkers thank each and every one of you and feel
the blankets added to their purchased dolls is what makes the
cradles a very special gift.
