Walker Spends Weekend Courting the Support of Anti-Immigrant Iowa Congressman
Madison – State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) issued the following
statement after Gov. Walker attended a GOP summit in Iowa this weekend hosted by
Congressman Steve King:
"As a supporter and strong advocate for our state's immigrant and Latino families, I am
committed to working with pragmatic officials and stakeholders on both sides of the political
aisle on this issue. With our state facing a $2.2 billion budget deficit it is disappointing that Gov.
Walker has chosen to spend his weekend not only outside of Wisconsin, but with one of the most
ignorant and inflammatory voices on immigration reform, Iowa Congressman Steve King.
“Congressman King's recent remarks that called a young DACA Dreamer attending President
Obama's State of the Union a "deportable" are regrettable and do nothing of value as we try to
find common ground on how to solve our nation's broken immigration system.
“While Governor Walker wants to say he supports our state's Latino community, he opposes my
public safety bill that would give eligible immigrants access to a driver's card, and my proposal
that would allow DACA high school graduates access to in-state tuition rates at UW-System
colleges and universities. Now, the governor is hoping to garner the support of Congressman
King as he advances his own national agenda. It is disheartening to say the least and I hope our
state’s Hispanic community will remember this."
In addition to his comments following last week’s State of the Union Address, Congressman
King has made other remarks in years past regarding childhood immigrant arrivals that leaders in
his own party have distanced themselves from and called, “hateful.”
Due to being out of state at Congressman King’s summit in Iowa this weekend, Gov. Walker was
not in attendance at the Wisconsin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual gala. The event,
which the governor has attended in the past, celebrates and recognizes the work of Hispanicowned businesses in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
