30th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A)
Pastor’s Corner
Today I would like to comment on the three readings that we find in the liturgy,
which invite us to notice the beauty and the goodness of the persons who live
around us. The first reading from the book of Exodus tells us that we must
respect the foreigner as well as our kin; that we must offer justice and love to
the orphan, the widow and the needy. The reason we must act thus is because
every human being is valuable in God’s eyes and worthy of esteem. In the
second reading, the apostle Paul thanks the Christians of Thessalonica for their
warm welcome and marvels at the goodness of this emerging community. And in
the gospel, Jesus Christ tells us that there are two great commandments that
sum up the whole Law: to love God and to love the neighbor. These two
commandments are similar because they refer to God and to man, who was
created in the image and likeness of his Maker. Gathered today as the children
of a great family, let us give witness that it is possible to have love among men,
and that God’s love resides abundantly in our hearts.
My congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the
Columbus High School Scholastic Olympics, and brought home the
championship for the second year in a row, as well as to their teachers. You
make us proud!
Fr. Federico

SACRIFICIAL GIVING IS A
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Our gifts are most appropriately presented at the Offertory of the Mass. The
celebration of Christ's sacrifice is a fitting context for our own sacrificial offering,
which is a grateful response to the unfathomable love God has shown for us.
Too often we want to separate the issue of giving, particularly the giving of
money, from those more "spiritual" aspects of our faith life. Yet, the commitment
of sacrificial giving is one of the most important expressions of our faith. Offering
our gifts at Mass places them in an appropriate context of prayer and response
to God. In the offering we can express our joy in having received and in being
able to give. We are able to say, "Thanks be to God!"
We can give back some portion of the tremendous gifts that have been given to
us, the most important of which we celebrate at the Eucharist. There is no better
time to fulfill our commitment to sacrificial giving than in this atmosphere of
prayer and thanksgiving.
We remember too, that this commitment is one of personal as well as corporate
prayer and part of a lifelong process of turning toward God. Just as our giving
forms an integral part of the ritual expression of our faith - the Mass - so it is
woven into struggles and joys which we experience on our personal faith
journey.
LA OFRENDA SACRIFICIAL ES UNA ORACIÓN DE ACCIÓN DE
GRACIAS

This month our students have been learning about the value of respect and how to show respect
for themselves and others. Respect means treating others as you want to be treated and
recognizing and responding to the God-given dignity of each person.
Congratulations to our students of the month who have shown respect for others and who have
made respect an intentional way of living their Catholic faith. We are proud of them!
St. Hugh Thinks Pink
October is breast cancer awareness month and St. Hugh School is teaming up
to help find a cure. Pink lanterns are being sold for $5 each. The lanterns will
be strung in the breezeway as a way to honor those who have had to fight a battle
with this terrible disease. The lanterns may be personalized with the name of the
person you would like to honor.
All proceeds of the sales will go to La Liga Contra el Cancer, an organization that helps cancer
patients receive the medical care needed. If you are interested in purchasing a lantern, please
visit the parish office.
