We see in the reading of today’s gospel that the Pharisees were far from
imagining that, by testing Jesus in this fashion, they were raising a very
thorny question which if at first seems to have an easy solution, it has not
had the best answer throughout history. The Pharisees asked a political
question. The people of Israel were subjected to a foreign power, the
Roman Empire, by force of arms. The Pharisees ask Jesus, “should we pay
taxes to the Roman emperor or no?
Jesus replies in an intelligent manner, by saying that the state is a
necessary society in human life, with authority to promote the common
good. But at the same time, He reminds the Pharisees that there is a
personal God, source and root of all authority, the Lord of history. And
that is what Jesus means with his reply, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s
and to God what belongs to God”.
Let us today approach the Eucharist, the feast of brotherhood, in order
to give Caesar, that is our brothers and sisters, what is Caesar’s and to
God what belongs to God.

En la lectura del evangelio de hoy vemos que los fariseos andaban muy lejos de
imaginarse que con la prueba a que sometían a Jesús planteaban una cuestión
espinosa, que si a primera vista parece fácil de resolver, no ha seguido el mejor
camino en el curso de la historia. Los fariseos le hicieron una pregunta de
carácter político. El pueblo de Israel estaba sometido por las armas a un poder
extranjero, el Imperio Romano. Los fariseos le preguntan a Jesús: ¿Debemos o
no pagar los impuestos al emperador de Roma?
Jesús responde inteligentemente, diciendo que el estado es una sociedad
necesaria en la vida humana, con autoridad para promover el bien común;
pero al mismo tiempo, recuerda a los fariseos que hay un Dios personal, fuente
y raíz de toda autoridad, Señor de la historia. Y esto es lo que quiere decir
Jesús en su respuesta: “Lo del César devuélvanselo al César, y lo de Dios a
Dios”.
En la misa del día de hoy acerquémonos a la Eucaristía, fiesta de hermandad,
para dar al césar, es decir a nuestros hermanos, lo que es del césar y a Dios lo
que es de Dios.

Grove for Ghana, our effort to bring quality water to needy communities in Africa, will
hold a cocktail party with live entertainment on Friday, October 24th, at 7 pm. Let us continue
giving our help to this missionary work . Tickets are on sale at the office.

Altar server Nicolas Alayo is conducting his Eagle Scout Service Project on November
8th at the Charlotte Jane Memorial Park Cemetery. He will be attempting to paint 600 graves
white and revive the historic site as a whole. With the plan and logistics figured out, he needs
your help to fund the project. Any amount of support is welcome! He will be outside the
church after Mass if you have any questions. (Look for the boy in the Boy Scout uniform).

Thank you for your Stewardship
Gracias por su Mayordomía
Thank you. We are who we are, because of our stewardship for the Lord. Last weekend we heard people speak about
the stewardship of our time and talent. This weekend we will hear people talk about the stewardship of our treasure,
that is, our tithes and sacrificial offerings to God each week. On Monday Oct. 20 (in English) and Tuesday Oct. 21 (in
Spanish), at 7:30 P.M., we will celebrate that feeling of stewardship of prayer with special healing Masses that will
include the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. We will pray for the sick in our parish family, for their families and
friends, and for their healing on different levels of mind, body and spirit. We will celebrate our love and support for
each other and our commitment to the Lord each and every day. God’s blessings and our thanks to all those who work
so hard to make these events come together so magnificently. God bless you all.
Next weekend, Oct. 25-26 will be Pastor’s Stewardship weekend. I will be at all Masses, filling in my personal
stewardship weekly offering pledge card for the Lord. After the homily, I will ask everyone to bring their stewardship
weekly offering pledge card, and put them in the stewardship basket next to me.
The Gospel of St. Luke says: “For where your treasure is, there also will be your heart.” (Luke 12:34) Stewardship is a
conscious raising endeavor. It calls for us to give the very best back to God; the best of our time, the best of our talents
and the best of our treasure. The question is, where is your heart? What do we value for time and eternity? I am
praying every family and individual will also pray for the courage to make a real sacrificial offering on their stewardship
weekly offering pledge cards to the Lord. He gives us all the good things we have, as we said last weekend, right down
to the beating of our hearts each day.
Father Federico and I are most appreciative of all the wonderful people who are stewards in our community and give
so much of their time, talent and treasure now. And we pray more people will take a step forward and join us, in truly
being good stewards of the Lord and the parish family of St. Hugh.

Gracias. Somos lo que somos debido a nuestra mayordomía al Señor. El fin de semana pasado hablamos sobre la
mayordomía de nuestro tiempo y talento. Este fin de semana hablaremos sobre la mayordomía de nuestro tesoro,
sobre nuestros diezmos y ofrendas en sacrificio al Señor que constituyen nuestro donativo semanal. El lunes 20 de
octubre (en inglés) y el martes 21 de octubre (en español), a las 7:30 PM, celebraremos la mayordomía de oración con
una misa especial de sanación, durante la cual celebraremos el sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Vamos a
orar por los enfermos en nuestra familia parroquial, por sus familiares y amigos, por su sanación en los diferentes
niveles de mente, cuerpo y espíritu. Celebraremos nuestro amor y apoyo mutuo, y nuestro compromiso con el Señor
día tras día. Muchas gracias y bendiciones a todos los que trabajaron por lograr que estos eventos tengan lugar.
El fin de semana que viene, octubre 25-26, será el fin de semana del Párroco. Estaré presente en todas las misas,
llenando mi tarjeta personal de compromiso de ofrenda semanal de tesoro al Señor. Después de la homilía, recibiré
junto al altar todas sus tarjetas de compromiso semanal.
El Evangelio de San Lucas nos dice “donde está tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón.” (Lucas 12:34) La
mayordomía es un esfuerzo por desarrollar nuestra conciencia. Nos pide que le devolvamos lo mejor a Dios; lo mejor
de nuestro tiempo, nuestros talentos y nuestro tesoro. La pregunta es ¿dónde está tu corazón? ¿Qué es lo que tiene
valor para nosotros en el tiempo y en la eternidad? Ruego que cada familia e individuo pidan al Señor tener el valor de
dar una verdadera ofrenda en sacrificio en su tarjeta de compromiso semanal. Él nos da todo lo bueno que tenemos,
“hasta el latido diario de nuestro corazón”, como dijimos la semana pasada.
El Padre Federico y yo estamos sumamente agradecidos por todos los magníficos feligreses que sirven a nuestra
comunidad y que ya nos dan tanto tiempo, talento y tesoro. Oramos para que muchos más den el paso y se unan a
ustedes, siendo verdaderos servidores del Señor y de la familia parroquial Saint Hugh.
