Thirty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 20, 2016
Pastor’s Corner:
Christ the King /Thanksgiving)
The Feast of Christ the King was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Its institution was necessitated by the struggle against the
rising secularism of that era convincing people to deny the belief in Jesus Christ as King. Many Christians, even Catholics, doubted Christ's
authority and existence not sparing as well that of the Church. Pope Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of dictatorship in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders. For this reason, he defined the Catholic Church’s stance
against this formidable challenge in his encyclical Quas Primas and had hoped to achieve the following effects: 1. That nations would see
that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state (Quas Primas, 32). 2. That leaders and nations would see that they
are bound to give respect to Christ (Quas Primas, 31). 3. That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast,
as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies (Quas Primas, 33).
Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King
was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was most needed. In fact, it is still needed
today, as these problems have not vanished, but instead have worsened.
Today, the same distrust of authority exists, although the problem has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an
extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self. The idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Also, many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be oppressive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for
Christ because they believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. However true these statements might be
(some kings have been oppressive), these individuals miss the point: Christ's kingship is one of humility and service.
Christ the King Sunday used to be celebrated on the last Sunday of October, but since the calendar reforms of 1969, the feast falls
on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, which is the Sunday before Advent. It is fitting that the feast celebrating Christ's kingship is observed
right before Advent, when we liturgically wait for the promised Messiah (King).
A THANKSGIVING DAY PRAYER
We thank you God, our grace, for being alive, tomorrow and today, for this earth, for bread and light, for the people around us,
today, yesterday and every day. We thank you for our lives here and now, lives laborious and full of joy. And may neither future nor death
separate us from Jesus Christ, who is your love for all mankind and all the earth.
We thank you, Lord God Almighty, for you are a God of men, for you are not ashamed to be called our God, for you know us all by
name, for you hold the world in your hands. And that is why you have created us and for this purpose called us into life, that we should be
all made one with you, to be your people here on earth. Blessed are you, Creator of all that is, blessed are you for giving us a place of freedom and of life, blessed are you for the light of our eyes and for the air we breathe.
We thank you for the whole of creation, for all the works of
your hands, for all that you have done among us through Jesus Christ,
Welcome to St. Stephen Parish
our Lord. Amen. (by: Huub Oosterhuis)

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests; For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests
dearest to me: The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy
Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me; All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way (especially________). O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity. Amen (By St. Therese of Lisieux )
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.”
(1Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)
Daily Prayer for Vocations Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your
people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

10-Week class The next session will be on Evangelization and the Acts
of the Apostles by Dr. Mary Healy. Who better to look to for guidance
on evangelization than the Apostles and disciples of the early Church?
And what better place to read their stories than in the firsthand account
of the Acts of the Apostles? Dr. Mary Healy combines insightful biblical study with Church teaching and practical advice to show how modern
Catholics can effectively impact their world for Jesus Christ.

angel ?
