PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“It happened that seven brothers and their mother
were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges
by the king …” 2 Maccabees 7:1
The extraordinary courage of these brothers and their mother is so inspiring! What a gift of God they are to us! They invite us to be strong in
the face of all the suffering that comes into our life. There are many people that suffer like the brothers and the mother in the Book of Maccabees.
We find them in our Christian brothers and sisters of the Middle East, that
have suffered the diabolic hared of Muslim extremists.
But God never abandons us. He come to us when all seems lost!
“The Lord is faithful; He will strengthen you and guard
you from the evil one …” 2 Thessalonians 3:3
Martyrs of the Lord, pray for us! All souls, pray for us!

PAPAL INTENTION FOR NOVEMBER
General Intention: That the countries which take
in a great number of displaced persons and
refugees may find support for their efforts which
show solidarity.
Missionary Intention: That within parishes,
priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the
temptation of discouragement.

WE ARE WELCOME ...
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
During this week, our young people who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation
for the first time will be reflecting on how Jesus welcomes sinners. Join them by reading and reflecting
on the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). As we
journey with them, let us pray that they may always
be open to the forgiving and transforming love of Jesus and that they may recognize and continually feel
His presence.
TEACH YOUR KIDS NOT TO FEAR A
PREDATOR’S MANIPULATION
YEAR 2 - PARENT PENANCE EXPERIENCE
Wednesday, November 9
7:00pm – 8:30pm
OLPH School Auditorium
This event is for year 2 parents only. If you did
not have the opportunity to attend last week you still
have a chance. The Parent Penance Experience is
for parents of children in our YEAR 2 Sacrament
preparation. Parents will reflect on the freedom forgiveness gives us, and how this Sacrament heals
us. If we can find forgiveness in our hearts for those
who have caused us hurt and injury, we will rise to a
higher level of self-esteem and well-being.
PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN
During the month of November, we are teaching
lessons 5 & 6 to our students. The lessons for the
children were added as part of the Archdiocese requirements for every Catholic Parish. Protecting
God’s Children Program was implemented in all
Catholic parishes in 2000. This is
a ‘Safety Program” taught at an
age appropriate level to the children/teens in our Parish.
This program is provided to
us by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and is part of our ongoing
effort to help create and maintain
a safe environment for children and teens from sexual abuse. Each year, all Catholic churches are required to report all training conducted in the parish to
the Archdiocese.
The schedule for these lessons is as follows:
Grade 1 & 2
November 6
School Hall
Grade 3, 4 & 5 November 13 School Hall
Grade 6, 7 & 8 TBD
Parish Center
We invite our Religious Education parents to attend this class with their child. It is a great class for
all ages and even though the presentation of the
class itself is on a child’s level there is valuable information for adults to hear and take home with them to
implement in their family life.
Fear is a powerful motivator, and unfortunately, it fuels the secrecy behind many instances of child abuse. A predator will use fear
to manipulate his or her victims, making it hard
to end the abuse. Often, abuse victims are too
scared or embarrassed to speak up, especially
if the abuser is someone they know. Abusers
can use close relationships to inspire fear of retaliation and may also stress that no one will believe their victim.

MELLOWING MOM
I have five siblings, three sisters and two brothers. One night I was chatting with my
Mom about how she had changed as a
mother from the first child to the last.
She told me she had mellowed a
lot over the years:
"When your oldest sister coughed
or sneezed, I called the ambulance.
When your youngest brother swallowed a dime, I
just told him it was coming out of his allowance."

ALL TOO REAL
Some thinkers laugh at
religion, accusing believers
of making up the idea of an
all-powerful God in heaven
just to comfort themselves.
The Maccabees story turns
that argument to dust. One
after another, seven brothers
and their mother accept torture and death because
of their faith in God. Their religious belief brings
not sugary comfort, but excessive cruelty. All the
king asks them to do is to eat “forbidden” meat. If
the Maccabees could agree that their religious
laws are based on made-up fairy tales, then how
easy it would be to ignore the Mosaic prohibition
against eating pork! The king promises to make
the last son rich and happy if he gives in. Instead,
the faithful young Israelite holds firm to his religion
and endures unspeakable torture. Religious belief,
for the Maccabees, is no “opiate,” no painkiller. No,
they testify to the truth that God is real, and that
following the Lord in discipleship can be difficult.
CONFIDENCE
God is real. With complete faith in God’s intimate love and mercy, believers face both joyful
and tragic circumstances with confidence. Saint
Paul prays for us to know this confidence: “May
our Lord...encourage your hearts and strengthen
them in every good deed and word.” We join Saint
Paul in this prayer, asking the Lord to give us the
strength to speak and act
rightly.
Jesus encourages us at all times. He gives us
hope that God’s strength in us will grow, making us
worthy to live forever in heaven. There, in paradise, we will no longer know death. As Jesus says
in our Gospel today, we will be “like angels.” Even
though our lives on this earth must end, we live in
hope. We may not be asked to die as martyrs, like
the Maccabees, but every moment of every day,
God offers us the very same hope and strength
that helped the martyrs remain faithful to the end.

TODO ES TAN REAL
Algunos intelectuales se ríen de la
religión, acusando a los creyentes de
inventar la idea de Dios Todopoderoso
en el Cielo sólo para consolarse ellos
mismos.

nosotros!

apoyo y oraciones. El Arzobispo
José H.
Gómez aceptó nuestra petición formal para el
programa del diaconado, y el 22 de octubre,
John fue oficialmente aceptado en el programa.
