Message from Mr. Jesus Cruz, Superintendent
Dear parents, teachers,
students and staff: Fall is
here and the first trimester
is almost over. Parent conferences are around the
corner, (11/14/16 through
11/17/16). Students have experienced
their first STAR Reading Initial Diagnostic Test that will identify their baseline
reading levels for the year. Our students
are exposed daily to engaging reading
opportunities. With our new Accelerated
Reading (AR) program, students will be
reading independently at their own reading level in order to accomplish growth in
reading over time.
Teachers have emphasized academic
instruction with the full implementation
of California Common Core State Standards in ELA/ELD and Math, and the
integration of technology for computerbased assessments. Teachers continue to
obtain professional development and
support in order to manage the student
data systems. The district continues in its
commitment to have the ratio of one
Chromebook cart for each classroom. In
pursuit of this goal we have purchased
three additional Chromebook carts, making a total of 90 additional Chromebooks
in the classrooms for grades 3-8. Student
use these technology tools for daily instruction, benchmark assessments and,
eventually for the SBAC computer assessment Spring test.
Students have embraced the positive
expectations of the Positive Behavioral
Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program by being 1) Safe, 2) Respectful, 3)
Responsible, 4) Prepared and 5) by Following Directions. Teachers and staff
continue to reinforce good student behavior. In addition, students were rewarded with a fun assembly called Champions
for Tomorrow, with a message to practice
good character education.
The new Reading Lab is up and running
with a great team of two Reading Intervention teachers and two instructional
aides. Teachers and the Reading Lab staff
collaborate daily to identify students’
needs and how to provide the additional
support.
Parents, thank you for being active participants in your children’s education,
participating in school committees, attending school functions, and volunteering for activities. Parent Workshops have
begun and are held on Wednesdays from
6:00-8:00pm. The workshops are facilitated by FCOE Parent Center Services. Information is available at the school and
automated phone calls are made weekly.

Congratulations to Mrs. Martinez and Mr. Vivenzi
Every year the Fresno County Office of Education, in
partnership with the Educational Employees Credit
Union, hosts an awards
ceremony to honor administrators, teachers and classified employees
from local school districts. Mrs. Osa
Martinez and Mr. Chuck Vivenzi were
nominated as the teacher and classified
employee representatives for Washington
Colony Elementary School District. They
were honored with awards at the Saroyan
Theatre on October 27, 2016.
Mrs. Martinez has been a teacher at
Washington Colony for five years. She
has taught third and fourth grade, and
currently teaches Math and Science to
sixth grade students. Recently she was
awarded a $1,000 Innovation Grant to be
used for the Science Olympiad projects.
She also teaches the Leadership class. She
and the Leadership students have coordinated many successful events, such as the
Jog-a-Thon, Kids Day Newspaper Sales,
and the upcoming Fall Carnival. Mrs.
Martinez is a shining example in the
teaching profession.
Mr. Vivenzi has been a custodian and
bus driver for Washington Colony for
many years. He cares deeply for the safety
and well-being of the students as well as
the other staff members. He has often
been found escorting teachers to their
cars when they are on campus after dark.
He works tirelessly to keep our campus
clean, safe, and a pleasant place to be. He
supports the students and is a friend to
all.

Estimados padres, maestros,
estudiantes y empleados: Ya
llegó el otoño y el primer
trimestre está por terminar.
Las conferencias de padres
ya se acercan, (11/14/16 al
11/17/16). Los estudiantes experimentaron su primer Examen Diagnóstico Inicial de Lectura STAR que va a identificar
su línea base de lectura para el año. Nuestros estudiantes son expuestos a diario a
oportunidades de lectura muy atractivas.
Con nuestro nuevo programa de Lectura
Acelerada (AR), los estudiantes estarán
leyendo de forma independiente a su
propio nivel para lograr progreso en lectura en el transcurso del tiempo.
Los maestros han enfatizado la instrucción académica con la implementación
completa de las Normas Básicas del Estado de California en Artes del Lenguaje
Inglés, Desarrollo del Lenguaje Inglés y
Matemáticas y la integración de tecnología para evaluaciones computarizadas.
Los maestros siguen obteniendo capacitación profesional y apoyo para manejar el
sistema de datos estudiantiles. El distrito
sigue con su compromiso de tener un
carro Chromebook para cada salón. En

Cada año la Oficina de Educación del Condado de
Fresno, en asociación con la
Unión de Crédito de Empleados Educativos, llevan a cabo
una ceremonia de premios
para honrar a los administradores, maestros y empleados clasificados de
los distritos escolares locales. La Sra. Osa
Martínez y el Sr. Chuck Vivenzi fueron
nominados como la maestra y el empleado
clasificado representando al Distrito Escolar
Primario Washington Colony. Ellos fueron
honrados con premios en el Teatro Saroyan
el 27 de octubre del 2016.
La Sra. Martínez ha sido una maestra en
Washington Colony por cinco años. Ha
enseñado el tercer y cuarto grado y en la
actualidad enseña Matemáticas y Ciencias a
los estudiantes del sexto grado. Recientemente recibió una Beca de Innovación de
$1,000 para ser usada en los proyectos de
Olimpiadas de Ciencias. Ella también enseña la clase de Liderazgo. La Sra. Martínez y
sus estudiantes de Liderazgo han coordinado muchos eventos exitosos como la Jog-aThon, la Venta de Periódicos del Día de
Niños y el próximo Carnaval de Otoño. La

Classroom News
TK and Kindergarten,(Mrs. Smith and
Mrs. Davis): October was a very busy
month! Thanks to all of you who came
and cheered us on at the Jog-A-Thon.
The students had a lot of fun. Thanks for
a great Halloween party! The students
really enjoyed all the treats! During Red
Ribbon Week we learned to say “YOLO”
- You Only Live Once-Be Drug Free!
Everyone is doing such a great job in
returning books and homework on Fridays. The students are looking forward to
the Carnival on November 4th. It’s not
too late to make your donations. Remember, it benefits our rooms 4 and 8.
We look forward to seeing you at conferences, November 14-17. When you
receive your conference note with date
and time, please return it as soon as possible.
Now that it is starting to get colder,
please remember to label your child’s
coat or sweater. Please continue working
on letters, sounds, numbers and sight
words with your child. Thanks again for
all you do for your child!
First Grade, (Mr. Schaffer and Mrs.
Partlow): Our first graders are soaring
along as five-star students! In Language
Arts we finished working on short “A”
words and are beginning words with a
short “I” in the middle, like dip and pig.
Please point out word with these sounds
to your child daily.
In Math we are continuing our work
with adding number partners through
ten, and using circle drawings to show
addition problems. Thank you for continuing to assist your child with homework, reviewing sight words from the
homework folder, and using real world
math skills (counting, adding, etc.) at the
store, in the car, and at home.
Please continue to remind your child
the importance of following the rules at
school. Please also continue reading to
your child and assisting them as they
begin to read more challenging books,
preferably for 20 minutes every day. We
look forward to seeing you at confer-
ences!
Second Grade, (Mrs. Pallas and Mrs.
Sweet): It has been a busy month in second grade! We had a visit from a firefighter who talked to us about fire safety
and fire prevention. The next day was
our Jog-A-Thon. We also enjoyed our
Halloween parties, thanks for all the
goodies you provided!
We are beginning our second unit in
our new Language Arts curriculum and
will be learning about how animals impact our environments and what they
need to survive. In Math we will begin
learning about numbers to 200. Please
continue to listen to your child read each
day, and continue practicing math facts
as well.
We look forward to meeting with you
during conferences!
Third Grade, (Ms. Espinosa, Ms. Hefley
and Mrs. Owens): We are super excited
in third grade! In ELA we are working on
cooperation and problem-solving. In
Math we are working on multiplying and
dividing the 6’s, 7’s and 8’s. Third grade
will be in charge of the “Hot Hot Hot”
coffee and hot chocolate stand at the Fall
Carnival and our grade level basket will
be coffee-themed as well. We will be asking for parent donations and volunteers
to help us make this a successful fundraiser. Please contact us if you have any
questions.
Fourth Grade, (Mr. Brotnov and Mrs.
Lyles): Fourth graders have moved from
that baby stuff of simply adding and subtracting, and into the Dangerous Land of
Multiplying and Dividing. While it’s no
guarantee that they will be able to accurately do their parents’ taxes, The fourth
graders are making great strides in their
understanding of how numbers work.
They are also learning about California
Indians and where they lived, as well as
finishing up electricity and magnetism.
Through it all there are great stories,
spelling words, explorations, and sometimes a bit of goofiness. The 4th graders
are awesome!
Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Hawkins and Mrs.
Barker: The 5th grade is off exploring
with Columbus, Balboa and others. The
New World has just been discovered and
we want to know what the explorers will
find. In Language Arts we read how the
television was invented. Weather is our
focus for Science. We will be learning
about and watching the news for information on hurricanes, tsunamis and
tornadoes. Math finds us multiplying and
soon we’ll be dividing fractions. Students
must practice math facts every night.
Memorizing the facts will make math
homework easier. Thank you for your
support and your donations of goodies
for our parties and the carnival!
Seventh Grade ELA/History, (Mrs.
Green): This month our 7th grade ELA/
History classes are finishing the ELA
theme, Bold Actions, by studying myths
and legends and creating a graphic comic
drawing of The Flight of Icarus. After we
finish our Bold Actions assessments and
performance tasks, we will move to the
next theme, Perception and Reality, where
we will explore how “things in life are
not always what we perceive them to be.”
We are continuing to study Medieval
civilizations, (Rome, Constantinople, and
Arabia).
Our 3D students in period 5 are debating and discussing the pros and cons of
teens playing video games. And our Creative Writing Class students in period 6
are finishing their poems and short stories, and beginning the autobiography
projects.
Eighth Grade, Ms. Galleano: Fondly
referred to as G-Force, this nickname is
intended to support unity, purpose, and
teamwork. Ms. Galleano has challenged
each student to represent themselves,
their school and their community on a
daily basis. They understand that they
eyes of the “underclassmen” are upon
them, that they are the leaders of tomorrow.
The Class of 2021 and Ms. Galleano
have settled in, completed the initial

Gracias a todos los que vinieron a echar
porras en la Jog-A-Thon. Los estudiantes se
divirtieron mucho. ¡Muchas gracias por una
gran fiesta del Día de Brujas! Los niños
disfrutaron mucho las golosinas. En la
Semana del Listón Rojo aprendimos a decir
“YOLO” – ¡Solamente Vivimos Una Vez –
Hagámoslo Libre de Drogas!
Todos están haciendo un gran trabajo
regresando libros y tarea los viernes. Los
estudiantes están muy emocionados por el
Carnaval del 4 de noviembre. Todavía hay
tiempo para hacer sus donaciones. Recuerden, que las donaciones benefician a nuestros salones 4 y 8.
Esperamos verlos en las conferencias,

Cuarto Grado, (Sr. Brotnov y Sra. Lyles):
Los niños del cuarto grado se han movido
de las cosas de bebés solamente añadiendo
y restando a la Tierra Peligrosa de Multiplicar y Dividir. Mientras que no podemos
garantizar que ellos van a poder hacer los
impuestos de sus padres, los niños del cuarto grado están progresando grandemente en
su comprensión de cómo los números trabajan. También están aprendiendo sobre
los Indígenas de California y también están
terminando de cubrir la electricidad y el
magnetismo. Hay grandes historias, ortografía de palabras y también cosas chistosas
que estamos cubriendo. ¡Los niños del
Artes del Lenguaje Inglés/Historia del
Séptimo Grado, (Sra. Green): Este mes
nuestras clases de 7º grado de Artes del
Lenguaje Inglés/Historia está terminando
su tema, “Bold Actions”, estudiando mitos y
leyendas y creando un dibujo de un cómico
gráfico “The Flight of Icarus”. Después de
terminar nuestras evaluaciones de “Bold
Actions” y trabajos de rendimiento, nos
vamos a mover a nuestro próximo tema,
“Perception and Reality”, en donde vamos a
explorar como “las cosas en la vida no siempre son lo que parecen ser”. Estamos siguiendo con nuestro estudio de nuestras
civilizaciones Medievales (Roma, Constantinopla, y Arabia).
Nuestros estudiantes 3D en el 5º periodo
están debatiendo y discutiendo los pros y
los contras de dejar que los adolescentes
jueguen juegos de video. Y nuestros estudiantes de Escritura Creativa en el periodo
6º están terminando sus poemas e historias
cortas y están comenzando con sus proyectos de autobiografías.
Octavo Grado, Srta. Galleano: Con cariño
referido como la Fuerza-G, este apodo tiene
la intención de apoyar la unidad, propósito
y el trabajo en equipo. La Srta. Galleano ha
desafiado a los estudiantes para que se representen ellos mismos y representen a su
escuela y a su comunidad a diario. Ellos
entienden que los ojos de us “compañeros”
están en ellos, que ellos son los líderes del
mañana.

Math Club News
Washington Colony Math Club is off to
a great start. For two Fridays we explored
fractals and pascals triangle. We also
watched the first half of Between the Folds,
a documentary about the relationship
between origami and math. At our last
meeting in October we practiced making
some origami and then watched the second half of the documentary.
For students interested in joining Math
Club, please see Mr. Marquez for a permission slip. Math club is open to students in grades 6-8 and meets on alternating Friday afternoons from 3:30 to
about 4:15 pm.

discovery phase of both ELA and History, learned procedures, routines, and
expectations, accessed online STAR tests,
and successfully memorized one facet of
the Constitution test, the Preamble. If
you have not heard your child sing it yet,
please ask them to do so—we need all the
reinforcement we can get!
ELA classes are currently focusing on
writing by deconstructing published
works. These activities are intended to
demystify the process, reduce writing
concerns, and improve the overall product.
History classes have read about the early
explorers and their motivation. Now we
prepare to settle the New World and
create a new nation, “of the people, by
the people, and for the people.”
Last, but certainly not least, our students have discussed, debated, made
decisions and voted on an end-of-year
promotion event, and elected class representatives. Their grand plan includes a
charter bus and will require funds to
finance this adventure. We are asking for
families to donate money, supplies and,
most of all, your TIME! You should have
received a notice about the upcoming
Fall Carnival. It is scheduled for November 4th, 4:30-8:00 PM and features a
silent auction. You may contact Ms. Galleano through the school office, your
student, or email, with questions, comments or concerns. [email protected].
We need your help, and we need it Now!
Together we will not only make it better,
we will make it GREAT!
Rocket Club
Rocket Club finds Tyler, Sophia, Briana, Leonardo, Sayuri, and Yvette finishing off their Fiesta Rockets, and they will
soon be ready to fly. The Fiesta is a funlooking, three-finned rocket that will be a
great flier, with or without mariachis to
send them off. (The kids have learned
about rocket construction, following
written directions, measurement, and
step-by-step procedures. These are skills
that will help them this year, but don’t
tell them that….they think they were
having fun.) The Fiesta will fly to about
500 feet, which is a nice altitude for the
small field we have at Washington Colony. After all, a Fiesta on the freeway
wouldn’t be such a good thing!

of the main office will be opened 5
minutes before the final bell rings. Every
Minute Counts! So please allow teachers
to finish the complete class at the end of
every day.

about Foggy Day Schedules (page 32).
We recently held the annual Jog-A-Thon
event that engaged students in a healthy
activity. Many parents were present to
cheer and support their students. Thank
you to Mrs. Martinez and the Leadership
students for organizing the event, and to
all students for participating and raising
funds for school activities. Our Fall Carnival is scheduled for November 4th from
5:00-7:30 pm. Please read the great things
teachers are sharing about students, and
about the STEM conference that some
middle school girls recently attended.

El Club de Matemáticas de Washington
Colony ha comenzado bien. Hemos explorado el triángulo fractal y pascal ya
por dos viernes. También vimos la primer mitad de “Between the Folds”, un

La Clase del 2011 y la Srta. Galleano están
completando la fase inicial de descubrimiento de Artes del Lenguaje Inglés e Historia,
han aprendido procedimientos, rutinas y
expectaciones, han accedido exámenes
STAR en línea, y han memorizado con éxito
una fase del examen de la Constitución, el
Preámbulo. Si todavía no ha escuchado a su
hijo cantar, por favor pídale que lo haga –
necesitamos todo el refuerzo posible.
Las clases ELA se están enfocando en escribir desensamblando trabajos publicados.
Estas actividades tienen la intención de
hacer el proceso más simple, reducir las
preocupaciones al escribir y mejorar el producto en general.

Club de Cohetes
El Club de Cohetes encuentra a Tyler,
Sophia, Briana, Leonardo, Sayuri, e Yvette terminando sus Cohetes Fiesta, y pronto
van a estar listos para volar. El cohete
Fiesta se ve muy bien y vuela muy bien,
con o sin mariachis en él. (Los niños
han aprendido sobre la construcción de
cohetes, seguir direcciones escritas, y
procedimientos de paso a paso. Estas
habilidades los van a ayudar este año,
pero no les digan eso… ellos piensan que
se estaban divirtiendo). El Fiesta va a
volar unos 500 pasos, lo cual es una altitud buena para el pequeño campo que
tenemos en Washington Colony. Después de todo, un Fiesta en la carretera no
sería una cosa buena.

Acabamos de llevar a cabo la Jog-AThon anual que involucró a los estudiantes en una actividad saludable. Muchos
padres estuvieron presentes para apoyar a
sus estudiantes. Muchas gracias Sra. Martínez y los estudiantes de Liderazgo por
organizar el evento, y a todos los estudiantes que participaron y recaudaron

Expanding your Horizons--STEM
Conference for Girls
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, 13
Washington Colony girls attended the
second annual Expanding your Horizons
Conference held at Fresno City College.
They got to hear the co-founder of BITWISE Industries, Irma Olguin, discuss
the need for more girls to be represented
in today’s technology industry. Our students also participated in workshops
ranging from genetics to engineering.
Thank you, girls, for attending the conference and representing all Colony girls.
