PRAYER IN THE CATECHISM OF THE
CATHOLIC CHURCH
LA ORACIÓN EN EL CATECISMO DE LA
IGLESIA CATÓLICA
OUR SITE OF FAITH WITH FR. BEN
NUESTRO ENFOQUE DE LA FE CON PADRE BEN
WHAT IS PRAYER?
“Let nothing disturb you; Let nothing
frighten you, All things pass away. God
never changes. Patience obtains all things.
He who has God, finds he lacks nothing.
God alone suffices. “ -St Therese of Avila
We remember that reading the Bible
everyday can uplift our spiritual profile and offer us
the basic rudiments we need for a healthy prayer life: attitudes toward ourselves and God that enable us to enter into relationship. In
the Sacred Scripture, a better image of God is
revealed to us and
we can approach the living God with greater sense of humility as
seen in the lives of the biblical men and women of prayer. For example, in Abraham, we learn to trust God as we call upon His holy
name (Genesis 12:1-4). In Jacob, we learn to ask God to bless us
irrespective of our shortcomings (Genesis 32:26), in David, we are
not afraid to ask God for forgiveness (Psalm 50), and in Ruth, we
profess our fidelity and our willingness not to extricate ourselves
from God (Ruth 1: 16-18). Prayer is bound up with the human history and the narratives of the biblical characters.
Therefore, prayer
is a relationship with God in historical narratives and events (CCC,
2568).
In talking about prayer from biblical perspective, it is
important to make a stop and reflect more deeply on how Abraham
our father in faith (Romans 4:11, 17) experienced prayer. When
God calls him, Abraham goes forth “as the Lord had told
him” (Genesis 12: 4). Abraham’s heart was entirely submissive to the
Word and so he obeys. Such attentiveness of the heart, whose
decisions are made according to God’s will, is essential to prayer.
Abraham’s prayer is expressed first in deeds: a man of silence, he
constructs an altar to the Lord at each stage of his journey (CCC,
2570). Later, prayer was experienced by Abraham as a test of faith in
the fidelity of God (Genesis 22:1ff).
In the spirituality of Abraham, we appreciate the
importance of seeing prayer as a belief in God, a kind of a profession
of faith (Genesis 22:1), prayer is also seen as walking in the presence
of God and in being in a holy covenant with the Almighty (Genesis
15: 6; 17:1ff). In Abraham, a man of prayer is one who welcomes
the stranger and gives food and shelter to the needy
(Genesis 18:1-15). The patriarch Abraham teaches us that prayer is
compassion in action. Our connectedness with God ought to include
the fate of the many brothers and sisters of Jesus in our world today:
learn how to help them and our gracious God will take care of your
own anxiety because the measure we give will be the measure we
receive (Luke 6:38).
Have a Graceful Week!!!
Remember to pray and pray for me!!!
Rev. Benedict Nwachukwu-Udaku
muchos hermanos y hermanas de Jesús en nuestro mundo hoy;

Help for Poor Souls in Purgatory on their way…
Our Catholic Church has especially chosen the month of November to consecrate to the
Holy Souls in Purgatory.
From November 1st to the 8th if we visit a cemetery and say some prayers there for the
poor souls on each day, we can gain one daily plenary indulgence for a specific soul.
Let’s each of us choose one soul of a deceased family member, relative or friend to offer
in November all our prayers and sacrifices for the release of his/her soul from Purgatory.
Come join us every second Wednesday of the month after the 6:15 PM mass at the
Chapel, to pray the rosary for the souls in purgatory.
