HUMILITY
Have you ever been in a group
of people--maybe on a tour, at a
social gathering, or at church-and discovered that you have
just been talking with a wellknown author, corporate CEO,
great scholar, or politician? Your
first thought is the hope that
you didn't say anything to
embarrass yourself; but your
second thought is how much
they seemed like such "regular"
folks. What is it that makes
people seem so "regular"?
Today's readings give us a clue
when they stress the importance
of humility.
It is so hard for us not to tell the
first person who will listen how
busy we are, how hard we work,
how much money we donate,
and how important our job
titles are. We think these
accolades make a difference to
people, and if we don't tell
them, how will they ever know?
But if our actions demonstrate
our values, people will recognize
our worth on their own. The
words of Jesus show us how
much better it is to let someone
else recognize our worth than to
be embarrassed because
someone did not.

Our Holy Father Speaks
ATICAN CITY (CNS) -Hearing the mayor of
Amatrice in central Italy
say his town no longer
exists and knowing
there were children
who died Aug. 24 in the
earthquakes that struck the region, Pope
Francis turned his weekly general audience
into a prayer service.
Beginning the audience in St. Peter's Square,
Pope Francis said he had prepared a normal
audience talk on how the merciful Jesus is
close to people, but given the devasta on in
central Italy, he decided to lead the
recita on of the sorrowful mysteries of the
rosary.
Later in the day, the Va can press office said
that as a concrete sign of Pope Francis'
concern for the earthquake vic ms, six
Va can firefighters had been sent to
Amatrice. They will work under the direc on
of the Italian government emergency
services in searching for vic ms and offering
them assistance.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the
magnitude-6.2 quake had an epicenter close
to Norcia, the birthplace of St. Benedict.
Smaller quakes -- at least two of which
registered more than 5.0 -- con nued for
several hours a er the main quake. By early
evening, the death toll had reached 120 but
Page 2
was expected to rise; more than 350 were
reported injured.
As emergency workers began digging people
out from under the rubble of collapsed
buildings and the number of verified deaths
climbed, Pope Francis arrived in St. Peter's
Square for his general audience.
"Hearing the news of the earthquake that
has struck central Italy and devastated en re
areas, leaving many dead and wounded, I
cannot fail to express my hear elt sorrow
and my closeness" to everyone in the
earthquake zone, especially those who lost
loved ones and "those who are s ll shaken
by fear and terror," the pope said.

Our Parish Mission
We, the Catholic Community of Saint Paul in Princeton,
honor our tradition of welcoming God’s
sons and daughters from different cultures and backgrounds to hear
and live the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Baptized and formed into the People of God, we continue
to grow in the Apostolic Tradition of Worship, Word and Service.
Worship through our participation in the Eucharist and celebration of sacraments;
Word, in our commitment to Catholic identity through Scripture and catechesis; and
Service, as disciples who share God’s love with all by working together
for peace and justice to advance the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Tending the sacred rela onship
Spiritual direc on is an on-going
rela onship between a “directee” (person
seeking) and a “director” (qualified person
giving guidance) wherein a sacred space is
created for the explora on and deepening
of the spiritual life. Through conversa on
and reflec on, the directee becomes more
a uned to God's presence and can
respond more fully to the Divine as it is
revealed in all areas of life. Direc on
typically takes place in a confiden al oneon-one se ng and may include some
form of prayer experience to increase
awareness of the movement of the Spirit
in the directee’s life. If you are interested

Faith Formation
A Message from John Michael McGuire
Without doubt, volunteers greatly assist in the growth and vitality of
faith communi es. Here at St. Paul, our volunteers enable our parish to
assist parents in their primary role in the faith forma on of their child
by providing an excellent cateche cal program to journey with them.
Mrs. Kaitlyn Mayer
Each year our programs need new volunteers to fill much needed places

Christ! While I am always wowed by the Holy Spirit’s ac ons within our community, and the
fact that the right people come forward every year, that doesn’t necessarily negate the

anxiety that comes before we complete our team.
[email protected]
For that reason, I am asking for your help in this process. If you are reading this, I invite you
(609) 524-0510
to reflect on whether you could volunteer for our parish’s Religious Educa on Program.
Perhaps you are gi ed in sharing your faith as a lead catechist/teacher like the many

volunteers we see each year, or those who have already come forward to give. Perhaps you

aren’t as secure in your ability to communicate the faith and would like to help this year by

being an adult aide to a class, or a hall monitor or parking lot safety person.
Lunch: from 12:00 to 1:15 pm.
Even if there isn’t an volunteer ministry role that you would be comfortable filling perhaps
you know someone in your family, or among your friends that you feel would be perfect for this sort of ministry? Encourage them or let
me know so that I could reach out. Many people volunteer because of an invita on. Help me to invite others to come and see the good
work accomplished in our forma on programs.
Whether you can volunteer with our program or not, I do ask that this week, and the coming weeks as we prepare to kick off our
programs on September 11th, that you pray for our catechists, aides, volunteers and for our children that come to learn their faith, that
no ma er our role, we all con nue to grow in our rela onship with Jesus Christ and his Church!

Celebrating Who We Are
and Where We Are From
Holy Father
(Continued from page 2)
"Having heard the mayor of Amatrice say,
'The town no longer exists,' and knowing
that there are children among the dead, I am
deeply saddened," Pope Francis said.
The pope thanked all the volunteers and
emergency workers who were trying to
rescue vic ms people trapped under the
rubble.
Assuring the people in the region of the
prayers and "the embrace of the whole
church," the pope asked the es mated
11,000 pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter's
Square to join him in praying that "the Lord
Jesus, who is always moved by human
suffering, would console the brokenhearted
and give them peace."
At the Benedic ne monastery in Norcia, a
community growing in fame because of its
prayer life and brewery, the 15 monks and
five guests were already awake when the
first quake hit, Benedic ne Father Benedict
Nivakoff told Catholic News Service. Aug. 24
is the feast of St. Bartholomew and "on feast
days we get up earlier" to pray, he said.
"All of the monks and the monks' guests are
safe," he said. But the Basilica of St. Benedict
suffered "considerable structural damage,"
and the monastery will need repairs as well.
Within a half hour of the first quake, Father
Nivakoff said, the square outside the
monastery was filled with people "because it
is the safest place in town -- around the
statue of St. Benedict."
While no buildings collapsed, it is obvious
that many homes are no longer habitable,
he said. The monks have set up a recep on
desk to help meet their neighbors' needs.
The basilica, he said, is closed pending an
inspec on by civil engineers, who were to
arrive the a ernoon of Aug. 24. However,
Father Nivakoff said, "the facade seems to
have detached" from the rest of the building
and major repairs are likely.
Assisi is just 45 miles from Norcia and,
according to Franciscan Father Enzo
Fortunato, the quake was felt strongly at the
convent and basilica that suffered major
damage from an earthquake in 1997.
Father Fortunato told the Italian news
agency ANSA that the quake woke all the
friars, many of whom ran to the Basilica of
St. Francis. No damage was visible, he said.
