SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES
Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
40 DAYS FOR LIFE: SEPTEMBER 28 – NOVEMBER 6
Did you know that approximately 20,000 babies are aborted
every year in Massachusetts? And about 1/3 die at Planned
Parenthood in Boston?
You are invited to join other Christians for 40 days of prayer and
fasting for an end to abortion. You are invited to stand and
peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil outside Planned
Parenthood, 1055 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, every day
from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. The campaign begins on Wednesday
September 28 at 3:00 p.m. During these 40 days, candlelight
vigils will take place on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. (English), and on
Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. (Spanish). The Rosary will be prayed on
Tuesdays at 2 p.m. A concluding prayer service will take place
on Sunday, November 6 at 3:00 p.m. If you’d like more information, please contact Rita Russo at 781-762-4391 or visit
www.40daysforlife.com/boston.
MARCH FOR LIFE IN MASSACHUSETTS
On Sunday, October 9, join hundreds of pro-lifers on Boston
Common in a March for Life that bears witness to the value of
all human life and raises money for agencies providing pro-life
services throughout the Commonwealth. The event begins at
1:00 p.m. with Cardinal Seán O’Malley and other pro-life speakers, followed by a joyful march around the perimeter of the Public Garden and Boston Common. For more information and
sponsorship sheets, visit MassProLife.com/2016March4Life.
DIVINE MERCY FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM
You are invited to join a ten week “retreat” – Divine Mercy in
the Second Greatest Story Ever Told combines history, Scripture, prophecy, and the lives of the saints to show God's merciful
love for you. In ten DVD episodes, Fr. Michael Gaitley shows
how historical events of the past 500 years connect to reveal the
deeply personal spiritual reality of God's merciful love - culminating now, in our lifetime. There is no book reading necessary.
Meetings begin Monday, October 17 in the Religious Education
building from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please contact Marianne Merola at
[email protected] for information and registration.
ALL SAINTS DAY PARTY FOR CHILDREN
Bring your children to a safe location on the Day of the Dead
(Halloween). Join us for
an All Saints Day Celebration on Saturday, October 31st from 6:00-8:00p.m. in
the Lower Hall of the Church. Children
are encouraged to come in
a Saint costume or other appropriate
costume. We will have games, prizes, a
costume contest, pizza and
more. Admission is free! Candy donations accepted, please drop them off at
the Religious Education Building in the
basket by the front office! Children must
be accompanied by an adult. If you need

ATTACKS ON GOD
Saudi Arabia deports Christians for celebrating Assumption
September 26: Saudi Arabia has deported 27 Catholics, all
Lebanese Maronites, who were arrested for celebrating the feast
of the Assumption in a private home. Saudi religious police
raided the home in Al Khafij where the celebration was taking
place, and charged those involved with "un-Islamic prayer." The
raid and the deportations appear to violate a Saudi policy,
announced in 2006, that Christians would be allowed to practice
their own faiths in private.
THE TRANSITUS OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI
The Franciscans of Primitive Observance invite you to attend
The Transitus of Saint Francis of Assisi on Monday, October 3 at
7:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 34
Common Street in Lawrence, MA. The Brothers will begin
chanting at 6:30 p.m. to help create a prayerful atmosphere for
the celebration. The Transitus is a bi-lingual liturgical
celebration (not a Mass) commemorating the passing of our
Seraphic Father, Saint Francis, from death to eternal life.
Following the celebration there will be a simple pot luck
reception. Please consider bringing your favorite dish, snack,
dessert, or drink.
HELP AND HOPE: A 12 STEP RECOVERY PROGRAM
FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Are you worried about another person’s drinking? Is someone
you know struggling with drug addiction? Don’t know what to
do or where to turn for help? Join us for HELP AND HOPE: A
12 Step Program of Recovery for family and friends of those
who suffer from addiction. Learn how to live in the solution, not
the problem! The meeting is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30
p.m. in Saint Mary’s Religious Education Building (30 Pond
Street, Waltham) – first floor in the meeting room at the end of
the hallway on the left. All are welcome!
ON THE BULLETIN COVER
This Sunday’s cover of Saint Francis of Assisi comes from the
Benedictine Monastery of Subiaco in Italy. Francis visited the
Benedictines and posed for this portrait that a monk painted on
the wall in the monastery. It is believed to be the only image we
have that shows what the saint looked like. St. Francis’ feast day
is October 4.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
From the Prayer of St. Francis

SAINT MARY PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last week, St. Mary’s was visited by two Bishops from
Guatemala. Bishop Antonio Calderon Cruz of Jutiapa and
Bishop Angel Recinos Lemus of the Diocese of Escipulas. A
majority of Guatemalans in St. Mary’s come from this part of the
country. The two men were recently ordained Bishops. Bishop
Antonio’s diocese was just established by Pope Francis in
January of this year. They passed through Boston on their way
home from Rome where they had taken part in a training course
for new Bishops. For the past few years, parishioners of St.
Mary’s have been raising money periodically to help build a
Shrine in Jutiapa. The Bishops wanted to stop by and
acknowledge the good work being done by the Guatemalans in
Waltham. Let us give thanks that they are bringing honor to our
parish. Let us also give thanks that there are parts of the world
where new dioceses and new churches are being created. The
Church is being blessed throughout the world and we need to
remember this when we know and hear of it suffering in other
parts of the world including our own. – Father Michael
PARISH FAIR THANK YOU
A big thank you to all of the people who worked for the parish
fair last Sunday. The fair gave people the opportunity to see how
they can join in various parish works. It was especially nice to
see people spend some time together after the Masses. Special
thanks to Dunkin Donuts on Lexington Street for donating hot
coffee and to Lavallee’s Bakery for sending over croissants . We
are also grateful the Knights of Columbus for setting up and
breaking down the tables for the event.
PLEASE DONATE FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED
Members and volunteers from Saint Mary's St. Vincent de
Paul Society provide assistance to individuals and families
within our local community. During the past few months your
donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items has allowed the St.
Vincent de Paul members and volunteers to provide recipients
with a bag of these items to supplement the food vouchers,
which we also provide. Thank you…
… Please continue your generosity each week! We would
appreciate donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items,
especially canned goods (no soup, please), to help those in need.
Current needs include canned meats, pasta, cereal, and peanut
butter. You may leave your donations in the baskets at the back
of the church. Many thanks. For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink… (Mt 25:35)
BOOKMARKS BY TINA FOR HAITI
Please take a bookmark from the back of the church in
appreciation for supporting the people of Haiti. Since 2010, we
have collected $59.426.05 and provided $55,202.07 in assistance
to Haiti to help rebuild their church. Thank you for your great
generosity towards this work of mercy. We will continue this
effort to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti build their church.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done
all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable
servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do.”
This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to
bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and
abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obliged to
do”.
Lord, increase our faith, give us compassionate hearts filled with
mercy. Lord, give us the grace to weep with those we serve,
forgive us the times when we judged or condemned them. Lord,
may we bring consolation to those who are suffering, may our
heart and hand always go together. Amen.
