From the Pastor’s Desk
Del Escritorio del Pastor
Dear parishioners and friends:
Queridos feligreses y amigos:
We have all seen him. He lies on a cardboard box
with a blanket of newspapers outside a shop
doorway. Perhaps you have seen him sleeping all
night on a bench at a local PATCO stop. Most of
us walk by, or perhaps we drop a few coins or a
dollar in the used coffee cup by his side. He is in
all of our towns and cities. He is the Lazarus of
our day. The Gospel of St. Luke can be very
challenging. In this week’s Gospel we are
presented with the famous parable of the rich man
and Lazarus. If the Gospel today makes you feel
uncomfortable, well, perhaps that was Luke’s
purpose. St. Luke is a gifted writer and in the
Gospel today he paints a picture. The rich man is
dressed in purple, which is the sign of luxury, is
wearing the Armani suit of his day and is dining
sumptuously while Lazarus is laying on his
doorstep, eating garbage and dogs are licking his
sores. In the parable the rich man is condemned
to hell, not because he is rich. There is nothing
wrong with money. He is condemned because he
totally ignored Lazarus. The rich man ignored
someone he saw every day. Lazarus was on his
doorstep and the rich man walked right on by
every day. Here is a question for you this week.
Is there a Lazarus on your doorstep? Someone
you see who is in need, not only for food, but
especially for love. Maybe it’s not a homeless
person but a person close to you. Someone in
your family or your neighborhood? Perhaps it is
a family member you have not spoken to in a long
time or an elderly relative or neighbor who needs
a call or visit. In this Year of Mercy, the Gospel
once again calls us to be merciful and
compassionate, both to the stranger on the street
we do not know and to the relative or neighbor we
see every day. Lord Jesus, help us all to grow in
compassion and mercy.
misericordia.
God Bless you and your Family, Father Vince
Que Dios te bendiga ti y a tu familia. Padre Vicente

“My child, remember that you received what was good during
your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but
now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover,
between us and you a great chasm is established…”
Luke 16:25-26A
When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave
it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have
created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do
not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own Stewardship we must
bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have
little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the
next life.
