VIA and BiblioTech partnership expands
literary opportunities for riders

continues to expand opportunities for riders to enjoy their
bus experience, and thanks to
a new partnership, riders will
have the opportunity to be
enlightened until they reach
their destination.
VIA announced a partnership with BiblioTech on
Wednesday morning to bring
Bexar County’s all-digital
public library to the traveling
public with the new “Ride
& Read” program. The first
kiosk was also unveiled at
VIA’s Centro Plaza Center to
celebrate National Literacy
month and for the digital library’s third year anniversary.
This will be the first in six
kiosks that will be installed
in five more transit centers in

really allows us to do that…

partnership from the get-go.”
Riders now have the opportunity to use the kiosks
and register as BiblioTech
patrons, where they are free to
browse for books, magazines,
music, periodicals and even
movies to make the ride more
pleasurable. Riders can check
out five items and download
them on a smartphone, tablet
or laptop for two weeks at a
time.

Project QUEST and Rackspace train
local veterans for cyber security jobs

A group of military veterans
are participating in an intensive,
12-week Cyber Security Boot
Camp, which began on Sept.
12, at the Rackspace Open
Cloud Academy to prepare them
for careers in this high-demand,
job field.
The initiative is a collaboration between Project QUEST
and Rackspace created from a
$50,000 grant from the City
of San Antonio and funds from
the Department of Labor to
establish a cyber security job
training program for veterans.

Agua es vida y salud, evitemos despilfarros

Recuerdo que en la década
de los setentas, viviendo en el
sur de California, escuchaba
en la radio el consejo de evitar
el despilfarro del líquido vital;
por igual en anuncios aledaños en las autopistas y en la
gran urbe angelina.
En algunos letreros se decía
que se evitara el desperdicio
de agua, ya que ello –con el
paso del tiempo– iba a repercutir en futuras generaciones.
En ese entonces, el gobierno
estatal y de las diversas municipalidades del Estado Dorado, como se le conoce a la
entidad californiana, no tenía
leyes estrictas sobre el mal uso
de agua.
Ahora es todo lo contrario:
quienes sean sorprendidos
despilfarrando el líquido vital
se exponen a recibir multas,
ya no solo en California sino
que en otros lugares donde
existe sequía.
Aquí en el sur de Texas, la
sequía hizo mella en los últimos cinco años; sin embargo,
en lo que va del 2016 la temporada de lluvia nos ha dejado buenos números de agua
que ha reforzado los mantos
acuíferos de la región sur.
San Antonio se encuentra
ubicado sobre el manto acuífero conocido como Edwards
Aquifer, el cual nos provee
de agua los 365 días del año,
mismo que en la actualidad
observa un nivel promedio
bueno (675 pies de profundidad), que garantiza el consumo de agua sin necesidad
de estrictas restricciones por
lo menos durante la época de
otoño-invierno.
Recuerden que el agua es
vida y salud, por lo cual tene­
mos el derecho de cuidar que
no haya despilfarros reparando goteras en el sistema
doméstico y denunciando
fugas de agua existentes, tanto
en propiedad privada como en
el sector público.
A mis tres lectores les diré
que recientemente un amigo
me recomendó que fuera yo
quien denunciara una gran
fuga de agua, la cual –según
él– desde hace dos meses no
había sido detectada por el
personal en la municipalidad
de Selma, que es un suburbio ubicado a 20 millas al
noroeste del centro de San
Antonio.
“Mire, tocayo, fíjese que me
duele tanto ver el desperdicio
de agua que por dos meses
está ocasionando una fuga
de agua. A mi parecer se va
por la alcantarillo cuando
menos unos treinta galones
por minuto sin que nadie haga
algo”, expresó mi estimado
tocayo. A ello le respondí
que por qué él no hacía valer
su derecho como ciudadano
preocupado por el despilfarro
de agua diciéndome de inmediato que no sabía a donde
llamar o acudir para poner su
queja. “Usted trabaja en La
Prensa y creo que si se aboca
al pro­b lema denunciándolo
le pueden hacer más caso que
a mí”, me contestó el amigo
José.
Al siguiente día muy de
mañana busqué el sitio electrónico de la ciudad de Selma
y obtuve el número telefónico
(210) 651-6661, al cual hice
el correspondiente llamado.
Primero me contestó la
grabadora, no dejé mensaje
y opté por volver a marcar el
mismo número. Luego de escuchar del 1 al 9 sobre qué departamento deseaba que se me
comunicara o que esperara en
línea para que algún empleado
tomara mi llamada finalmente
la aceptaron, siendo una voz
femenil la que amablemente
me preguntó sobre el propósito de la misma. Yo le dije que
era solo para denunciar una
fuga de agua en el sector de la
entrada oeste al hipódromo
Retama Park. La empleada
me dijo que inmediatamente
turnaría el reporte al departamento correspondiente.
Por la tarde retorné al lugar
de la fuga de agua. Desde lejos
comencé a ver que la corriente
ya no se veía. Me acerqué y
capté un par de fotografías
en los mejores ángulos que
mostraban la reparación y el
material dañado por un lado.
Ello me llenó de emoción y en
mi libreta de apuntes escribí
mensaje para el siguiente
día volver a llamar al mismo
número y darle mi agradecimiento al personal que acudió
al llamado para darle solución
al problema de fuga de agua
que por dos meses ni tan siquiera fue tomado en cuenta por
personas que a diario caminan
o trotan por ese mismo sector.
Bueno, no juzgaré a nadie,
pero sí por este conducto
convoco a la comunidad para
que haga frente y de inmediato denuncien este tipo de
despilfarro del vital líquido.
Desde que me diagnosti­
caron padecimiento de vértigo
he venido consumiendo agua
en mayores cantidades, ya
que ello es parte de mi recupe­
ración o cuando menos ayuda
a que pueda controlar dicho
malestar físico- mental que en
mucho tiene que ver el no hidratar el cuerpo como se debe
hacer, principalmente durante
el verano, y sobre todo cuando
se tienen presiones personales,
ya sea en el hogar o en el sitio
de empleo.
El agua es un valioso recurso
natural, cuidémosla haciendo
buen uso y evitando despilfa­
rros, sino ¿qué le vamos a dejar a las generaciones futuras?
Como dato de gran importancia les diré a mis tres
lectores que en el canal que
predice el clima se dijo que las
trágicas inundaciones que dejaron sorpresivas tormentas en
el vecino estado de Louisiana
( misma que cobraron vidas y
pérdidas multimillonarias) dejaron la marca de cinco billo­
nes de galones de agua, cantidad que toda la población del
estado de Louisiana usaría en
los próximos 360 años.
Cabe anotar que, recientemente, la alcaldesa Ivy Taylor
publicó una columna relacionada al cuidado del vital
líquido (en edición del diario
Express-News), por lo que ello
viene a reforzar mi testimonio.

Ovarian cancer: Three things you need to know

In my practice, as a general surgeon, I routinely ask
patients about their family
history of heart disease and
diabetes, but also about their
cancer history.
Many people don’t realize
that many cancers can be inherited, like prostate, stomach
or pancreatic cancer, because
these cancers don’t get that
much attention. Breast cancer,
however, gets tons of media
attention nowadays because
of fervent effort of multiple
thousands of advocates, volunteers and celebrities. Even
the NFL goes pink in October!
Another important cancer to
remember is ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer is diagnosed in
a quarter of a million women
around the world every year.
Statistics show that just 45
percent of women with ovarian cancer are likely to survive
for five years, compared to up
to 89 percent of women with
breast cancer.
Unfortunately, ovarian cancer gets hidden behind the
pink glow of breast cancer,
so while many women are
aware of their family history of
breast cancer, they don’t know
about their family history of
ovarian or uterine cancer.
Many patients are aware of the
link between family history of
breast cancer and the BRCA
genes, but the risk of ovarian
cancer is forgotten.
Women who are BRCA
carriers are not only at risk
for breast cancer, but also
have up to a 50 percent risk
of ovarian cancer. Women
who may be at higher risk
compared to everyone else
are those who on either their
father’s or mother’s side of
the family have two or more
relatives who have had ovarian, breast, colon or uterine
cancer. Women with one
close family relative with ovarian cancer are candidates for
genetic testing. These are the
facts I want you to know:
All women are at risk for
breast cancer. Women with
an increased risk are those
who started their periods at a
young age (younger than 12),
had menopause at a later age
(older than 51), have never
had children and have never
taken birth control. These are
also risk factors for breast
cancer by the way.
Ovarian cancer is often
diagnosed at a late stage.
There is no reliable screening
test for ovarian cancer, so
we find it only when it’s big
enough to cause symptoms.
We as doctors do not routinely look for this cancer like
we do breast cancer, so knowing your personal and family
history is important.
Many women believe
the Pap smear will detect
ovarian cancer. It does not.
If you have a family history of
even one close relative with
ovarian cancer, have signs
or symptoms like increased
tummy size or pelvic pain,
then your doctor will refer you
for a complete pelvic exam, a
pelvic ultrasound and a CA125 blood test.
So talk to family members
on both your mom’s and
dad’s side and know your
family’s cancer history. If
there is family history of ovarian, breast, uterine or colon
cancer, you may benefit from
genetic testing. It will also
give you motivation to get
that mammogram and colonoscopy. Don’t just assume
your health is fine, know it!

the launch of the Open Cloud
Academy Cyber Security class,
we are extending the academy’s
reach into this rapidly growing
local industry and hope to facilitate further expansion and cyber
security talent development in
San Antonio. We are excited to
kick off the pilot program with
the first class of veterans and

The curriculum includes Security Plus Training, Role Based
System Administration, Security Wireless Networks, Ethical
Hacking and Penetration Training, and Cloud Basics, among
other classes.
Following completion of the
Cyber Security Boot Camp,
veterans will be placed in paid
internships or paid full-time employment from January-March
2017 at partner employers,
including Accenture, Def-Logix,
IP Secure, Rackspace, USAA,
VIA Metropolitan Transit and
Webhead.
“There’s no finer accelerated way to learn information
technology fundamentals than
through the Open Cloud Acad-
emy,” said Charles Rodriguez,
2015 OCA graduate and retired
lieutenant general. “My experience in the OCA was hands-on,
highly personalized and provided the necessary transferrable
skills for a full-time job as a
support technician at Rackspace
following graduation.”
Funding and tuition assistance
for the cyber security program
is provided by Project QUEST,
City of San Antonio and a
Department of Labor H1-B
Information Technology grant.
Other partners include the Texas
Veterans Commission, Coley &
Associates and the Veterans Economic Communities Initiative.
Project QUEST trains and prepares people for high-demand
jobs that pay a family wage. Its
strategy involves the following
components: identification of
demand occupations, outreach,
recruitment, comprehensive
applicant assessment, academic
enhancement, occupational
or customized skills training,
case management, work readi-
ness training, support services
and transition to employment
services.
Participants receive their occupational training from accredited institutions including Alamo
Colleges, University of Texas
Health Science Center, Baptist
School of Health Professionals
and Rackspace Open Cloud

Comentarios... Debatiendo los debates
Nunca antes hemos
tenido dos
candidatos
presidenciales tan impopulares en
Jorge Ramos
Estados Unidos. Así que los próximos tres
debates entre Hillary Clinton
y Donald Trump serán para
ver a cuál de los dos rechazan
menos los votantes.
La indignación y enojo que
ha generado Trump está ampliamente documentado: Ha
comparado a mujeres con animales; ha llamado criminales
y violadores a inmigrantes;
ha propuesto discriminar a
millones de musulmanes solo
por su religión; ha ofendido a
personas con discapacidades
físicas; ha dicho que el calentamiento global es un invento de
los chinos; y por años se negó
a reconocer que el presidente
Obama había nacido en Estados Unidos.
En el país que es sinónimo
del capitalismo, un empresario
multimillonario no nos quiere
decir cuánto ha pagado de
impuestos. La excusa es que le
están haciendo una auditoría.
Sin embargo, cualquier votante
desde el este de Los Ángeles
hasta Hialeah en la Florida
debería saber si ha pagado un
mayor porcentaje de impuestos
que Trump.
Hillary Clinton, por su parte,
ha tenido tos y un problema
de credibilidad. Las encuestas
dicen que mucha gente no
le cree. ¿Por qué? Porque
sospechan que borrar miles
de correos electrónicos de un
servidor privado es para esconder algo. Y porque tomar
decisiones simultáneamente en
el Departamento de Estado y
en la Fundación Clinton pudo
haber generado conflictos de
interés.
Lo de la tos, causada por
una neumonía, le puede pasar
a cualquiera. Pero ¿por qué el
retraso de varios días en informar el diagnóstico a la prensa?
¿Será esa su misma manera de
operar en la Casa Blanca?
No estoy muy seguro que
en los debates obtendremos
respuestas a todas nuestras preguntas para ambos candidatos.
Pero, sí espero que quede claro
quién puede liderar la nación
más poderosa del mundo en
un momento de tanta división
interna.
Yo, personalmente, quiero
ver los debates para entender
qué es lo que quieren hacer
con los 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados.
Solo les adelanto algo: Esos
inmigrantes son ya parte de
nuestra economía y de nuestra sociedad y no se van a ir
voluntariamente. Están aquí
porque hay miles de empresas
que los contratan y porque hay
millones de personas que se
benefician de su trabajo.
Solo veremos a dos candidatos debatir pero me hubiera
gustado que fueran cuatro.
Es una pena que en el primer
debate presidencial no incluirán al candidato del partido
Libertario, Gary Johnson, y a
la candidata del partido Verde,
Jill Stein. He organizado foros
con Johnson y con Stein y, sin
duda, tienen ideas que nunca
escucharíamos de Clinton y
de Trump. Son una verdadera
tercera opción, y es difícil
entender por qué la Comisión
de Debates Presidenciales, en
una campaña electoral única
como esta, no fue más flexible
en su regla de solo aceptar a
candidatos que tuvieran un
15 por ciento de apoyo en un
promedio de encuestas. Todos
perdemos.
Por último, tengo gran admiración por todos los periodistas que participarán
como moderadores en los tres
debates presidenciales y en el
vicepresidencial. Sé que están
bajo enorme presión. Pero
espero que entiendan que su
rol, en esta ocasión, es muy
distinto al de otros debates
presidenciales.
El moderador que solo planteaba temas y luego se distanciaba para que los candidatos
dijeran cualquier cosa es una
forma muy vieja de hacer periodismo. En esta ocasión los
moderadores deben asumirse,
antes que nada, como periodistas, no como policías de tránsito; activos y participantes, no
pasivos y pacientes; haciendo
las preguntas que nosotros los
telespectadores quisiéramos
hacer.
Les pido a los moderadores,
por favor, que tomen partido.
No, no por algún candidato, sino que tomen partido
por la audiencia y por los
votantes. Es el periodismo
como servicio público. Están
obligados a hacer preguntas
duras e incómodas, a corregir
a los candidatos si mienten,
a presionarlos si no quieren
contestar y a evitar que tiren
rollos llenos de generalidades.
Al final, si las dos campañas
se quejan del moderador, será
la mejor señal de que hicieron
bien su trabajo.
Cualquiera de los dos candidatos puede ganar la Casa
Blanca. Hay mucho en juego.
Los debates son la última
prueba de fuego. El mundo,
no exagero, estará debatiendo
los debates.

Just a Thought: Hispanic Heritage Month
For the last
two weeks,
the local Hispanic community and the
entire City of
San Antonio
Steve Walker has been celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month,
Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Fresh off the Diez Y Seis
parade on the West Side that
drew a crowd of parade watchers and participants, plus the
42nd birthday party of the Castro twins at Pearl Stable with a
crowd of over 500, including
elected officials and dignitaries,
it has been exciting.
During September through
mid-October, we recognize the
contributions and important
presence of Hispanic and Latino
Americans in the United States
and especially in the Alamo city.
Locally, we celebrate the rich
heritage and culture that is so
prevalent here, anytime we are
given the opportunity.
It has been noted Hispanics
have had a profound and posi-
tive influence on our country
through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work
and service. It is documented
that they have enhanced and
shaped our national character
with centuries-old traditions
that reflect the multi-ethnic and
multicultural customs of their
community.
The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican,
South or Central American,
or other Spanish culture or
origin – regardless of race. On
the 2010 Census form, for
example, people of Spanish,
Hispanic and/or Latino origin
could identify themselves as
Mexican, Mexican American,
Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban
or “another Hispanic, Latino, or
Spanish origin.” In San Antonio,
we embrace all Hispanics of all
those respective distinctions.
Last year throughout the
month, various San Antonio
Public Library branches hosted
activities to explore different
facets of Hispanic culture and
heritage. There was a Latin
American Film Series at Mission
Library and Carmen Tafolla,
the state poet laureate, hosted
“A Tribute to San Antonio in
Poetry and Photographs” at the
Carver Library.
As part of the national celebration last year, an art exhibit
entitled “Windows to the Soul”
featured the artwork of local
Hispanic icon Lionel Sosa at St.
Philip’s College, Sept. 17, 2015.
The portrait exhibit was wellreceived by the students in attendance for the formal presentation. As an adjunct instructor
at St. Philip’s, at the time, I was
thrilled to bring my class of
medical assistants and also take
photos of the event. As a side
note, over the years I have had
the privilege of covering Sosa
at community events as well as
political events.
Sosa is the author of “Think
and Grow Rich, A Latino
Choice,” published in 2006
by Random House, and “The
Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in
Business and in Life,” published
in 1998 by Dutton Publishing.
A few current Hispanic Heri-
tage Month art exhibits in San
Antonio include: San Antonio
Public Library, multiple locations, with the spotlight on
Hispanic artists.
Exhibiting works by local
creatives, the talents of Thelma

According to the recent Census, 55 million people or 17
percent of the population are of
Hispanic or Latino origin. This
represents a significant increase
from 2000, which registered
the Hispanic population at 35.3
million or 13 percent of the total
U.S. population. Hispanics do
make a contribution to San Antonio and do make a difference.

neighborhood leaders from the
West End Hope in Action, we
visited with seniors about their
concerns.
After the 1929 stock market crash and bank failures,
President Franklin Roosevelt
actually understood how to
“Make American Great Again.”
It was not through stirring hate
or fearmongering. He did not
settle for the “every man for
himself” approach. He brought
people together and showed
how working together we
could solve problems like that
of millions of older Americans,
who during the Great Depression were penniless.
Out of that concern, he
led efforts to establish Social
Security, which last month
celebrated its 81st birthday.
In those eight plus decades,
Social Security has never been
a day late or a dollar short.
This most successful and essential federal initiative provides
modest retirement, disability
and survivor benefits to nearly
60 million Americans, including 42.5 million retirees and
more than 9 million veterans,
who are receiving over $73
million of their earned benefits
each month.
Stable retirement, like a
solid home, must be built on
a strong foundation. If Wall
Street banks undermine your
private retirement or misfortune strikes, Social Security
will still be there as a backstop.
For many, it is what puts food
in the fridge and keeps the
lights on, week after week. This
federally-guaranteed source of
income provides 90 percent or
more of the income for 1 in 3
seniors overall and about half
of unmarried seniors.
This is especially important
to women, who live longer
than men after decades of being paid less on average than
men. And Social Security will
continue to be vital, especially
to the majority of workers,
who have no private pension
coverage, and more than a
third, who have no savings
set aside specifically for retirement.
Yet the benefits of Social
Security are not limited to retirement. It is the sole source
of life insurance for many
of the more than 4 million
children who receive benefits
each month because one or
both of their parents have
died or become disabled. It is
also the primary source of disability insurance, ensuring that
when a loved one becomes too
disabled to work, some support will be available. Social
Security is our most effective
anti-poverty program, raising
21 million Americans, including 14.5 million seniors, out
of poverty. In addition, it is
an economic driver. The National Committee to Preserve
Social Security and Medicare
estimates that in 2014, Social Security contributed $1.6
trillion nationally and about
$107.7 billion in Texas to
the economy in the form of
additional spending and other
economic activity.
Despite these benefits, the
drive to dismantle Social Security remains a real threat,
against which I have consistently worked. While Social Security receives ample revenue
to pay all promised benefits
through 2034, we should work
to extend its solvency. Some
see privatization as an option,
a tantalizing prize for a host
of Wall Street financial interests. But privatizing will only
reduce solvency and endanger
benefits for millions of current
beneficiaries.
The work that AARP does
to protect Social Security and
Medicare is extremely important. Social Security and Medicare represent a commitment
that we make to each other,
knowing that, due to no fault
of our own, through disability,
injury or old age, we may need
help to enjoy the dignity we
have earned by a lifetime of
work and to access health care.
I am committed to continuing to defend this life-saving,
irreplaceable, social insurance.
We need to strengthen and
improve retirement security,
not promote insecurity by
privatizing it.

injured his hamstring on Tuesday and will
require surgery, sidelining the team’s best
outside shooter for at least six months. He is
expected to get surgery next week and plans

they will not penalize Jimmie Johnson for postrace laser inspection failures in Chicago. It was
said the inspection failures regarding the rear

The San Antonio Spurs recently announced multiple additions
and promotions to the basketball
operations staff.
Brian Wright joins the organization as assistant general
manager while Monty Williams
comes on as vice president
of basketball operations. Phil
Cullen joins the Spurs staff as
director of basketball strategy
and Pat Sund has been named
pro personnel scout/Austin
Spurs assistant general manager.
Nick Repole joins the Silver and
Black as director of basketball of
basketball information systems
while Landry Fields has been
named a college scout.
In addition, the following
members of the Spurs basketball
operations department have received promotions: Will Hardy
has been elevated to assistant
coach while Andy Birdsong has
been promoted to director of pro
player personnel/Austin Spurs
general manager.
Brandon James has been
elevated to assistant general
counsel/director of basketball
administration and Dave Telep
has been promoted to director of
scouting. Xavi Schelling is now
the team’s director of sports science and athletic performance
while Niraj Mulji has been elevated to basketball operations
manager. Dutch Gaitley has
been promoted to video coordinator.
Wright joins the Spurs after
spending the past two seasons
as the Detroit Pistons assistant
general manager. Prior to his
stint with the Pistons, Wright
spent eight seasons with the
Orlando Magic, serving as the
director of college scouting in
his final season. Wright began
his career with the Magic as a
summer intern in 2006 and was
hired as the scouting coordinator
prior to the 2006-07 season.
He also served as scouting
manager and spent the 201213 season as the team scouting/
player development manager.
Wright attended graduate school
at the University of Central
Florida, earning an MBA and
master’s in sports business management from the DeVos Sports
Business Management Program.
Prior to his time at UCF, he
played basketball at La Sierra
University.
Williams returns to San Antonio for his second stint with
the Spurs. After a nine-year
NBA playing career, including
two-plus seasons with the Spurs,
Williams got his start in the
front office and coaching while
serving as a coaching intern with
the Silver and Black during the
2004-05 campaign. Last season,
Williams served as an assistant
coach with the Oklahoma City
Thunder. Prior to joining the
Thunder, he was the head coach
of the New Orleans Pelicans
from 2010-2015, guiding the
Pelicans to the postseason twice.
Before his time in New Orleans, he spent five seasons
as an assistant coach on the
Portland Trail Blazers’ bench.
In 2013, he was named an assistant coach for the 2013-16
USA Basketball Men’s National
Team. He earned a degree from
Notre Dame’s College of Arts
and Letters, majoring in communications and theatre.
Hardy has spent the past
six seasons with the Silver and
Black, including the last three
as the team’s video coordinator.
During the past two summers,
Hardy has served as the head
coach of the Spurs summer
league team in Utah. The Wil-
liams College graduate began
his career in San Antonio as a
basketball operations intern in
2010 before being promoted
to assistant video coordinator
in 2011.
Birdsong is in his second stint
in the Spurs front office, most
recently serving as the team’s
director of basketball operations.
He began his NBA career as a
basketball operations intern with
the Silver and Black during the
2011-12 season. Prior to rejoining the Spurs, Birdsong spent
three seasons with the Atlanta
Hawks in the basketball operations department.
James enters his fifth season in
the Spurs front office as in-house
counsel for basketball operations
responsible for CBA, salary cap,
legal and administrative matters. Before joining the Silver
and Black, he spent four years
with IMG Sports, Entertainment and Media serving several
positions in talent marketing and
ultimately the coaches division
representing professional and
collegiate coaches.
Telep joined the Spurs in
2013 as the team’s draft scouting coordinator after serving
as ESPN.com’s senior national
recruiting analyst. He also spent
time as a sideline reporter for
ESPNU and a studio analyst for
Recruiting Nation. Telep has
also served on the USA Developmental National Committee for
the USA National Team.
Schelling has spent the past
two seasons with the Silver and
Black as an applied sports scientist. Prior to joining the Spurs, he
served as the director of athletic
performance from 2006-14 for
Bàsquet Manresa, a Spanish
team in the 1st Division of the
ACB Spanish League. He has
also worked as the strength and
conditioning coach for the Span-

Gaitley is in his fourth season
with the Spurs, spending the
last two as the team’s assistant
video coordinator. He started
with the Silver and Black as a
video intern during the 2013-14
season. Prior to San Antonio,
Gaitley served as the video coordinator at Lehigh University.
He was as a graduate assistant
for the Temple basketball team
in 2011-12 after playing his
senior season with the Owls.
Gaitley also played collegiately
at Monmouth University from
2006-09.
Cullen joins the Spurs after
spending the past four seasons
at the University of Utah, where
he served as the team’s director
of basketball operations during
the 2015-16 season. Prior to
that, Cullen spent three seasons
as the Utes director of player development and camps, following
a three-year stint as an assistant
coach at Grand Canyon University. Cullen played for Utah
from 1998-2002 and helped the
Utes to a 90-35 record during
that span.
He also played baseball for
the Utes and the right-handed
pitcher was drafted by the Seattle
Mariners in 2000, appearing
in a total of 46 games for two
Seattle minor-league affiliates in
three seasons. Cullen received
his bachelor’s degree in civil
and environmental engineering
from Utah in 2006 and earned
his master’s in leadership from
GCU in 2012.
Sund has signed on with the
Spurs after having spent the past
seven seasons with the Golden
State Warriors organization,
including the last two as associate general manager of the Santa
Cruz Warriors and manager of
scouting for Golden State. Sund
originally joined the organization as a basketball operations
assistant prior to the 2009-10
campaign after graduating from
Indiana University with a degree
in sports marketing and management. Sund worked with the
Hoosier basketball team under
Tom Crean during the 200809 season before joining the
Warriors.
Repole comes to San Antonio
from the Charlotte Hornets,
where he served as the basketball
operations systems developer
and quantitative analyst for the
past two seasons. Prior to joining the Hornets, the University
of Michigan graduate was an
associate product development
specialist for Eagle Investment
Systems.
Fields joins the Spurs after a
five-year NBA playing career. An
All-Rookie First Team Selection
in 2011, Fields averaged 6.8
points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6
assists in 23.6 minutes in 255
career games with the New York
Knicks and Toronto Raptors.
Mulji joined the Spurs in
2014 and has spent the past
two seasons as a basketball
operations quality assurance assistant. A graduate of Southern
Methodist University, he was the
head student manager with the
Mustang’s basketball team from
2012-14.

Basketball team have released
the 2016-17 season schedule.
On Nov. 11, the season will
begin with the Rattlers taking
on regional foe Cameron in
the first game of the Tarleton
State Classic.
Three nights later, the Rattlers will play their first home
game of the season when they
host Texas A&M-Kingsville
on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. The
annual St. Mary’s University
Thanksgiving Classic will begin on Nov. 25. The Rattlers
will open the tournament

After leading the way for
the St. Mary’s Rattlers in the
WNMU Invite earlier in the
week, Maria Regina Gonzalez
has been named the Heartland
Conference Women’s Golfer
of the Week, the league an-
nounce on Wednesday.
The sophomore helped propel the Rattlers to a fourth
place finish after she fired
a 2- under 70 for the final
round. Gonzalez ended her
two rounds of play an even-par
144, good enough to place her
tied for third on the individual
leaderboard. This comes one
year after she finished tied for
second in the same tournament.
St. Mary’s entered the final
round outside of the top-10, in
12th place, before rallying on
Day 2. The Rattlers will return
to the links on Oct.2 when they
travel to Amarillo, Texas for the
WTAMU Lady Buff Stampede.

court against Javelinas

St. Mary’s hosted regional
foe Texas A&M- Kingsville at
Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers defeated the Javelinas 2519, 25-23, 18-25 and 25-21
to improve their record to 7-6,
handling the Javelinas only
their second loss of the year.
The Rattlers were led by
the outside hitting of Chan-
ning Hankins, Maddi King
and Tarine Grace. Hankins
dropped a match-high 17
kills, while King added 15
and Grace with 14, respectively.
Setting the table was freshman setter Bree Perry, who
accounted for 50 of the Rattlers 53 assists in the match.
In each set, the Rattlers
seemed to find the most opportune time to capitalize on a
scoring run. Set 1 saw the Rattlers score seven unanswered
before scoring six straight in
set 2. St. Mary’s closed out
the match in set 4, scoring the
four of the final six points to
avenge its Sept. 6 loss to the
Javelinas.
On Saturday, the Rattlers
will resume Heartland Conference play when they host
Texas A&M International at
12 p.m.

“16 de Septiembre Parade” en Avenida Guadalupe

El sábado 17 de septiembre
fue celebrada la Independencia
de México con el desfile “16 de
Septiembre Parade” en la Avenida Guadalupe, mismo que se
ha efectuado tradicionalmente
por los últimos 35 años y que
es organizado por Avenida
Guadalupe Association.
El desfile es parte de una
larga lista de festividades que
se extiende hasta el 6 de octubre en una planeación conjunta
con el Consulado General de
México en San Antonio, Diez
y Seis de Septiembre Commission y la administración
municipal a través del Department for Culture and Creative
Development.

Dan Hughes y Jayne Appel-Marinelli dijeron adiós a las Stars

En los festejos en honor
a sus aficionados, el equipo
Stars de San Antonio, mediante la gerencia general y su
administradora Ruth Riley,
extendió su programa al final
de su partido dominical contra Mercury de Phoenix para
hacerle reconocimientos al
entrenador en jefe y ex gerente
general Dan Hughes y la jugadora Jayne Appel-Marinelli.
Hughes, con 12 temporadas
al frente de Stars, y AppelMarinelli, veterana con ocho
temporadas vistiendo el uniforme de Stars y jugando en
la WNBA, con anticipación
habían dado a conocer que
esta sería su última temporada
con Stars, entrando al relevo
de la gerencia general la ex
basquetbolista y jugadora
de Stars, Ruth Riley, quien
ahora estará siendo ayudada
en la transición por Hughes
para encontrar nuevo timonel
o entrenadora que se haga
cargo de la preparación de las
chicas que seguirán dentro del
programa y de quienes lleguen
como refuerzos.
Los primeros dos mil fans
que entraron al AT&T Center
con boleto de admisión pagado recibieron una camiseta
conmemorativa con el diseño
de corbata, alusiva a las que
Hughes vistió durante su estancia al frente de las Stars.
Hughes y Appel-Marinelli
recibieron felicitaciones de
la fanaticada, en especial
de ejecutivos de la empresa
Spurs Sports & Entertainment
(SS&E), propietaria de los
equipos Spurs de San Antonio (NBA), Spurs de Austin
(D-League NBA), Rampage
(AHL), y Stars (WNBA).
Durante ceremonia especial
conducida por el comentarista
Andrew Monaco, ambos estuvieron acompañados por
sus respectivas familias, sobresaliendo detalles emotivos
sobre las respectivas carreras
de Hughes y Appel-Marinelli.
Hughes, nativo de Lowell,
Ohio, de 61 años de edad, se
retiró dejando marca personal
durante 17 años en la WNBA
con 523 partidos dirigidos,
23 triunfos, y 286 derrotas.
Appel-Marinelli, graduada
de Stanford University, de
28 años de edad y nativa
de Berkeley, California, fue
elegida por Stars en el 2010
WNBA Draft, primera vuelta,
escaño 5, en su última campaña al centro de la cancha
por Stars. Dejó récord de 4.0
puntos, 5.3 rebotes y 2.1 asistencias por partido.
Ambos se destacaron por su
dedicación al desarrollo del
baloncesto y en programas de
beneficio en la comunidad de
San Antonio.

206 aniversario de la Independencia
de México en San Antonio

La ceremonia de “El Grito”
de Independencia de México,
que inició la guerra por su
soberanía en contra de la corona española, fue celebrada
con una numerosa asistencia
en la Avenida Santa Rosa,
frente a Market Square.
En México, tradicionalmente, el grito de independencia se celebra la noche
del 15 de septiembre, y la
ceremonia principal por supuesto se efectúa en el Palacio
Nacional de Ciudad de Méxi-
co, presidida por el presidente
de la República.
En la ceremonia se rinde homenaje al Padre de la Patria,
el sacerdote Miguel Hidalgo,
y a los capitanes insurgentes
como el también sacerdote
José María Morelos, Ignacio
Allende, Mariano Matamoros
y Vicente Guerrero.
Históricamente la independencia comenzó la mañana
del 16 de septiembre en el
pueblo de Dolores Hidalgo,
cuando el párroco, Miguel
Hidalgo, mandó a repicar
las campanas de su iglesia
haciendo un llamado a la
insurgencia.

lunch menu for those ready to
take a break from a hard day
at work or even home.
Do not blame hungry foodies who want to relax from a
busy day and go towards an
ambiance that will make the
lunch experience tasty and
tranquil. As you walk into
the restaurant, you will find
blooming plants and a bar
ready to serve you a relaxing
drink.
When you go to the outside
area of the restaurant to enjoy
the sun, you will feel as if you
are in a secret garden filled
with lights with a little more
privacy. Since its opening
in April 2015, Alchemy has
quickly become a staple for
farm-to-table cuisine.
Alchemy crafts its menu
using the finest ingredients
sourced from local farmers
featuring vegan, vegetarian
and regular options, along
with kombucha and craft
cocktails. Chef Jessica Rivera
wanted foodies to enjoy a
menu that carries flavors of
San Antonio, the healthy
way.
“It was basically our style
from the get-go… I like to
keep authentic Texas ingredients in the menu. There are
different ways to bring in the
San Antonio flavor, including
using elements of Indian and
Puerto Rican ingredients”
Rivera told La Prensa. “As
a Puerto Rican, I like to use
fresh onions and greens and
even spicy oils that give the
items a great flavor.”
I recently stopped by the
restaurant to try the new
lunch menu and at the end
of the experience, I was filled
with a different kind of flavor.
The Cured Fish Sandwich
looked like a torta at first;
however, it offers a salty,
fresh and citrus flavor once
bitten into. With ingredients
including Redfish Drum,
Heirloom Tomatoes, Red Onion, Avocado, Texas greens
you taste the roots that Chef
Rivera is accustomed to.
Thanks to her, foodies can
expand their flavor horizon
with the appetizing flavors
that Puerto Rico carries.
When I first tried the Cashew Flame Grilled Naan, I
thought it was a veggie filled
taco, but it was something I
had not tasted in San Antonio. In fact, it is one of the
best items to try on the menu.
With ingredients including
Pesto, Naan, Beet Sautee,
Texas greens, Salted Balsamic
Asparagus, Cashew Puree,
Rayu Oil and a hint of salt,
it offers a velvety texture you
would taste in hummus. The
Cashew Flame Grilled Naan
introduces a new flavor San
Antonio can grow accustomed to.
“We want to provide lunch
hours so our customers have
more opportunities to enjoy
our cuisine and kombucha,”
said Co-Founder Kevin Rayhons. “The service will be
more casual, but the quality
of the food will remain excellent as always.”
Once finished with my
tasting, Rayhons informed
me that students will also
benefit from eating at the
restaurant. Students, whether
from high school or college,
are welcome to come in and
get a 10 percent discount on
their meal.
“We’re right next to downtown San Antonio, and we
want to encourage college
students to come by and sip
on some kombucha and enjoy
a meal during the day,” stated
Rayhons.

a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 11
p.m., Friday and Saturday
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

ACL Festival celebrates 15th anniversary
with legendary bands, upgraded amenities

Austin’s biggest festival is
ready to roll in Sept. 30-Oct.
2 and Oct. 7-9 with upgrades
and amenities that will make
every festival goer ready to
celebrate the festival’s 15th
anniversary.
The 2016 edition of the
Austin City Limits Music Festival will happen in the fields
of Zilker Park and will feature
mellow yet credible bands
such as Radiohead, Major
Lazer, Flume, M83 and Band
of Horses to start things off
on Friday.
“We enjoy performing at
ACL every chance we get to,”
said Radiohead guitarist Ed
O’ Brien in a 2012 interview
with ACL. “[Austin] is a very
special place that gives you a
feeling [to perform]. When we
get to America, it gets difficult
to move around each city, and
you think how people can live
here… But when we come to
Austin, we could easily live
here.”
Saturday’s lineup will pump
the jam with the help of Kendrick Lamar, Kygo, The Chainsmokers, Cage The Elephant,
LL Cool J featuring DJ Z-Trip.
Sunday’s lineup will make the
fest a little more country with
an added dance step with the
help of Mumford & Sons, LCD
Soundsystem and HAIM, who
will share Sunday’s bill with
Chris Stapleton on weekend
one and Texas legend Willie
Nelson on weekend two.
Festival goers will have the
opportunity to enjoy their

fresh fruit, trail mix and festival survival needs including

fans will have the opportunity
to enjoy the air conditioning

This year, ACL Festival
will introduce “Feast Under
the Stars,” a one-of-a-kind
dining experience that will
take place for the first time
between weekend one and two
on Thursday, Oct. 6 at Zilker
Park. Six award-winning chefs
will prepare a locally sourced
five-course meal with wine
provided by Austin Hope
Wine Collection.
This exclusive event will
feature select wine pairings for
each course, while the chefs
reveal the creative approach
to their dishes. Tickets are
limited and available now.
Kids will also have a memorable experience to enjoy with
the new and improved Austin
Kiddie Limits, which will
be relocated to the shaded
Southeast end of Zilker Park.
When families register for
Tag-a-Kid this year at the Family Friendly Entrance or the
Info Tent just inside the main
gates, each child will receive
an RFID-enabled wristband.
In celebration of ACL Fest’s
10-year partnership, the Aus-
tin Parks Foundation will be
on-site at the festival with

La oda a la naturaleza de Ansel Adams en el Museo Briscoe

La naturaleza es majestuosa: tanto en la distancia
como en el detalle y eso es
lo que se descubre al visitar
la exhibición de las treinta
fotografías de Ansel Adams
(1902-1984) expuestas en el
Briscoe Western Art Museum
como parte de FotoSeptiembre.
Las imágenes, todas en
blanco y negro, provienen
de la Colección del Banco
de América y estarán en exhibición en el Briscoe (210
W. Market Street) hasta el 15
de diciembre de 2016.
“A través de su larga e impresionante carrera, Ansel Adams se erige como el paladín
del oeste contando su historia
a través de sus extensos e impresionantes paisajes, como
también con estudios más íntimos de naturaleza y arquitectura. Esta exhibición presenta
ambos estilos, permitiendo un
entendimiento más profundo
de la interpretación única
del mundo natural de este
fotógrafo”, expresó Sharon
García, jefa de comunicación
y marketing del museo sobre
la exhibición.
Y al ser Adams uno de los
más destacados fotógrafos
y cronistas del oeste, la exhibición de sus fotografías
“encaja perfectamente en Briscoe Western Art Museum”,
añadió García.
El paisaje
Agrupadas bajo el nombre
de “Ansel Adams: Distance
and Detail” (Distacia y Detalle), las fotografías dan
una muestra de los amplios
paisajes fotográficos que hicieron famoso el trabajo de Adams (salidas de sol, cataratas,
dunas, tormentas dispersándose, sierras coronadas por
amplios cielos con nubes,
entre otras) en diferentes
escenarios naturales de todo
el país.

Estos amplios paisajes
fotográficos estaban influenciados por la idea del panorama idealizado, “un género arquetípico en las descripciones
pictóricas y fotográficas tempranas del oeste americano”,
además de la corriente estética
del Pictorialismo, presente en
la fotografía de ese tiempo,
explica el material extra de
la exhibición.
Pero asimismo se contempla una muestra de la fotografía de detalles de la naturaleza: como las sinuosas
raíces de un árbol en Hawái
o la geométrica perfección de
una hoja en Alaska.
La naturaleza es la protagonista casi unánime de estas
fotografías, pero también
está presente sus paisajes arquitectónicos como fachadas
y ángulos de diversas iglesias
católicas de misiones en Arizona o Nuevo México.
El desarrollo y maestría en
sus técnicas de revelado en el
cuarto oscuro le permitieron
a Adams imprimir un gran
dramatismo a sus imágenes
fotográficas, ya que cada una
presenta un rango único de to-
nalidades del blanco al negro,
permitiendo observar un gran
detalle y texturas en ellas.
El fotógrafo
Ansel Adams es uno de los
fotógrafos y ambientalistas
más famosos de América en
el siglo XX.
Su pasión por la naturaleza
empezó cuando a los 14 años
convenció a sus padres para
pasar unas vacaciones en
el Yosemite National Park.
Su recuento fotográfico del
mismo, gracias a la cámara
de caja Kodak Brownie que
sus padres le proveyeron, demostró un fino ojo y afinidad
natural para este arte.
Años más tarde, ya convertido en fotógrafo profesional,
contaría en su autobiografía
cómo los viajes en su niñez
influyeron en su vida: “Constantemente retorno a los
elementos de la naturaleza
que me rodeada en la niñez,
tanto en visión como el ambiente. Más de setenta años
después puedo visualizar
ciertas fotografías que podría
hacer ahora equivalentes a
estas experiencias tempranas.
Mi niñez fue mucho el padre
para el hombre en el que me
convertí”.
Ansel Adams también formó parte del Club Sierra y
antes de convertirse en su
fotógrafo oficial guio visitas
en el Yosemite Park, trabajó
en la biblioteca, entre otras
tareas. Se convirtió también
en el director de esta organización ambiental, así como
vocero por la protección de
tierras ante el Congreso.
En 1980 recibió la Medalla
Presidencial de la Libertad de manos del presidente Jimmy Carter,
quien definió a Adams como “un
monumento en sí mismo”.
Adams falleció en 1984. Al
año siguiente a su muerte la
cima de una montaña ubicada al suroeste del Parque
Nacional Yosemite fue bau-
tizada Mt. Ansel Adams en
su honor.
“Ansel Adams: Distance
and Detail” estará en exhibición hasta diciembre
de este año en el Briscoe
Western Art Museum, museo
ubicado en el River Walk que
exhibe arte contemporáneo
y objetos históricos que realzan el Oeste Americano en
donde el mundo del vaquero,
indio americano y cowboy
confluyen.
El museo está instalado
en el edificio original de la
Biblioteca de San Antonio
(que data de 1930) y que ha
sido restaurado a su esplendor inicial.

Nueva diversión para mascotas en el Lady Bird Johnson Dog Park

El Lady Bird Johnson Dog
Park es ahora un pequeño
(con mucha sombra) y agradable
parque de diversiones para
perros gracias al equipo de
juegos que fue instalado el
martes de esta semana por
la ciudad de San Antonio en
compañía de representantes
de Beneful y voluntarios.
Esa mañana, James Sun,
gerente de marcas de Beneful,
entregó un cheque simbólico
a Sandy Jenkins, gerente de
proyectos de Parques y Recreación de la ciudad de San
Antonio, por $20.000, los
cuales fueron utilizados para
adquirir el equipo de juegos
y de parque.

El Lady Bird Johnson Dog
Park, ubicado en el parque
del mismo nombre en el
10700 Nacogdoches Road,
San Antonio, TX 78217, fue
abierto al público en marzo
de este año y es uno de los
9 parques para perros de la
ciudad, detalló la gerente de
Proyectos de Parques y Recreación de la ciudad de San
Antonio.
El más reciente abierto es
el Nani Falcone Dog Park en
el Falcone Park (7625 Mystic
Park). Otros están ubicados
en McCallister Park, Pearsall
Park, Phil Hardberger Park,
Slick Park, entre otros.

forma parte del proyecto
Dream Dog Park de Beneful
(www.DreamDogPark.com),
que apoya el mejoramiento
de parque para perros y su
construcción en todo el país.
De acuerdo a su página
web el proyecto ha apoyado
parques para perros en California, Arizona, Misuri, Georgia, Alabama, Washington
State y Pensilvania.
Este año, Beneful apoyará
12 parques en el país y el
Lady Bird Johnson Dog Park
es el primero en ser beneficiado en San Antonio, porque
es una ciudad donde hay

cuanto al comportamiento
en un parque para perros,
por qué es importante llevar
a las mascotas, no llevar perros agresivos y siempre estar

Chalk It Up will be held on
downtown Houston Street in
San Antonio, Saturday, Oct. 8
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This free, contemporary arts
festival turns five downtown
city blocks into a chalk canvas,
showcasing local emerging
artists and raising funds for
art education. It also promotes
downtown San Antonio as a
destination with a thriving arts
and culture scene.
Artpace Chalk It Up is
presented by Argo Group
with additional support from
Valero Energy Foundation,
Centro San Antonio, Frost
Bank, H-E-B, the University
of Texas at San Antonio, and
the San Antonio Museum of
Art, CPS Energy, and Subway. Chalk It Up aims to
raise funds through sponsorships to benefit Artpace’s free
educational programming
that serves 8,000 students
annually, primarily in schools
without art programs. The
mission of Artpace Chalk It
Up and Artpace’s educational
programs is to cultivate a lifelong passion for the arts.

mural. Children can take part
in hands-on education activities, inspiring innovation by
connecting art with science,
technology, engineering and
math concepts. Additionally,
local schools, universities and
nonprofits are invited to play
a significant role at Chalk It
Up by creating an original
design together as members of
“Team Works.” Registration
for Team Works is available

San Antonio’s network of
emerging local artists, curated
by Roberta “Nina” Hassele,
will create chalk masterpieces.
Participants will be able to
capture their favorite Artpace
Chalk It Up moments with an

Caribbean Colombian musical group
Wache comes to the Guadalupe stage

The Guadalupe Cultural
Arts Center will be joining
the diverse array of offerings
at this year’s Una Noche en
La Gloria in presenting a concert of traditional Caribbean
Colombian music.
Wache, a ten piece group
led by musician and former
Guadalupe guitar instructor
Kiko Villamizar, will bring
the richness of a variety of
Colombian rhythms such
as porro, puya, gaita, merengue, chalupa, bullerengue, tambora, cumbia and
vallenato. The members of
Wache will share stories that
are unknown, even to many
Colombians, and explore the
beauty of this seldom heard
music.
Wache will perform on
Saturday, Oct. 15 from 6
p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and the
admission is free.
The Guadalupe presentation of Wache is funded by
the Arts Create grant from
the Texas Commission on
the Arts and is a part of the
Generation Ñ Concert Series.
This concert series brings the
best new voices in contemporary Latin music to the
Historic Guadalupe Theater
stage.
Past performances have
included the Afro-Cuban
folkloric music of Pedrito
Martinez, the modern rock
sounds of Native American
duo Scatter Their Own, and
the Latin infused roots rock
of Austin-based Tejana Patricia Vonne.
