"He replied to him, 'You have answered correctly; do this
and you will live.'" In today's Gospel a scholar questions
Jesus about how to gain eternal life. In case anyone ever
wonders whether heaven is within reach, one only needs
to refer to this Gospel. Jesus provides a clear answer that
gives us a clear plan of action: We are to love God with
all that we are, and also to love our neighbors. Really, it's
that simple.
The scholar, however, complicated things to make himself look better. Instead of accepting the simplicity of Jesus' instruction, he wanted to split hairs, asking, "And
who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied with the story of the
Good Samaritan-and the lesson that our neighbors are not
just those we know or love. Rather, our neighbor is the
person that needs our help, the person whom we would
rather ignore, the person whom God puts in our path. In
short, everyone is our neighbor and we are called to treat
everyone with mercy. This is part of how we gain eternal
life
But this flows from the first element of Jesus' answer.
First and foremost, Jesus instructs us to love God "with
all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength,
and with all your mind." When we love God in this way,
truly as the Lord of our life, then loving our neighbors
becomes the easy part. When our hearts and minds are
full of the love of God-who loves all people-then it will
necessarily follow that we too will desire to share that
love with others and not count the cost.
The Good Samaritan is an excellent example of this kind
of love. Without hope of repayment, he gave of his time
and his money to help the poor victim. But in return, the
Samaritan will surely "gain eternal life."
"Maestro, ¿qué debo hacer para conseguir la vida eterna?
Observemos que en el Evangelio de hoy hay un diálogo
de preguntas y respuestas. Una parábola muy conocida
en medio de este dialogo es contada por Jesús. La parábola del buen samaritano. Muchos oyentes como en
el tiempo de Jesús pueden hacerse los sordos y quedarse
siempre con el mismo comentario de siempre y exclamar. ¡Esos que se pasan de largo! ¡Qué malas personas son! Es fácil dejar a otros con la carga de los
demás, quedando tan tranquilos porque otros hacen lo
que a mí me toca hacer. ¡Eso no se vale! Tenemos que
fijarnos hoy en la frase final del Evangelio. "Entonces
Jesús le dijo: 'Anda y haz tu lo mismo'".
De la segunda pregunta básica es que Jesús cuenta la
parábola. "¿Y quién es mi prójimo?" La parábola termina
con una pregunta, para que el mismo que tiene duda responda. "¿Cuál de estos tres te parece que se portó como
prójimo del hombre que fue asaltado por los ladrones?"
La respuesta fue, "El que tuvo compasión de él". Si
hiciéramos esta pregunta al Papa Francisco, de seguro él
nos contestaría. ¡Misericordia, el que mostro misericordia! Porque, en verdad, éste ha sido su pedido, llamado
e invitación a lo largo de esta Año Santo de Misericordia. Vayan al mundo, salgan de los escondites del egoísmo y muestren el amor de Jesús que es rico en compasión y amor. ¡No pasemos de largo en las necesidades
de los demás! En otras palabras, dejar el pecado de
omisión para entrar en la acción del Evangelio.

Misericordia y Conversión
Después de su resurrección, Jesús se apareció en muchas ocaciones a los
discípulos, antes de ascender a la gloria del Padre. El pasaje del Evangelio que
acabamos de escuchar (Lc 24, 45-48) narra una de estas apariciones, en la cual
el Señor indica el contenido fundamental de la predicación que los apóstoles
deberán ofrecer al mundo. Podemos sintetizarla con dos palabras: «conversión»
y «perdón de los pecados». Son dos aspectos que caracterizan la misericordia
de Dios que, con amor, cuida de nosotros. Hoy hablaremos de la conversión.
¿Qué es la conversión? Está presente en toda la Biblia, y de manera particular en la predicación de
los profetas, que invitan continuamente al pueblo a «volver al Señor» pidiéndole perdón y cambiando estilo de vida. Convertirse, según los profetas, significa cambiar de dirección y dirigirse de
nuevo al Señor, basándose en la certeza de que Él nos ama y su amor es siempre fiel. Jesús ha
hecho de la conversión la primera palabra de su predicación: «Convertíos y creed en el Evangelio» (Mc 1, 15). Es con este anuncio que Él se presenta al pueblo, pidiendo que se acoja su palabra como la última y definitiva que el Padre dirige a la humanidad (cf. Mc 12, 1-2). Respecto a la
predicación de los profetas, Jesús insiste todavía más en la conversion interior. En esa, efectivamente, toda la persona está involucrada, con el corazón y la mente, para convertirse en una criatura nueva, una persona nueva. Cambia más el corazón y uno se renueva.
Cuando Jesús llama a la conversión no se presenta como juez de las personas, lo hace desde la
cercanía, en el compartir su condición humana, en la calle, en la casa, en la mesa... La misericordia hacia quienes tenían la necesidad de cambiar de vida se realizaba con su presencia amable, para hacer partícipe a cada uno de ellos en su historia de salvación. Jesús persuadía a la gente con la
amabilidad, con el amor; y con este comportamiento, Jesús llegaba a lo más profundo del corazón
de las personas que se sentían atraídas por el amor de Dios e impulsadas a cambiar de vida. Por
ejemplo, las conversiones de Mateo (cf. Mt 9, 9-13) y de Zaqueo (cf. Lc 19, 1-10) sucedieron exactamente de esta manera, porque se sintieron amados por Jesús y, a través de Él, por el Padre. La
verdadera conversión se da cuando acogemos el don de la gracia; y una señal clara de su
autenticidad es el hecho de que nos damos cuenta de las necesidades de los hermanos y estamos
preparados para salir a su encuentro.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡cuántas veces sentimos también nosotros la exigencia de un
cambio que afecte a toda nuestra persona! ¡Cuántas veces nos decimos: «debo cambiar, no puedo
continuar así. Mi vida, por este camino, no dará frutos, será una vida inútil y yo no seré feliz!».
¡Cuántas veces nos vienen estos pensamientos, cuántas veces!... Y Jesús, a nuestro lado, con la
mano tendida nos dice: «ven, ven a mí. El trabajo lo hago yo; yo te cambiaré el corazón, yo te
cambiaré la vida, yo te haré feliz». Pero nosotros, ¿creemos esto o no?; ¿creemos o no?; ¿qué
pensáis vosotros?; ¿creéis en esto o no? ¡Menos aplausos y más voz!: ¿creéis o no creéis? Jesús
que está con nosotros nos invita a cambiar de vida. Él, con el Espíritu Santo, siembra en nosotros
esa inquietud de cambiar de vida y ser un poco mejores. Sigamos
entonces esta invitación del
Señor y no pongamos resistencia, porque sólo si nos abrimos a su misericordia, encontraremos la
verdadera vida y la verdadera alegría. Sólo debemos abrir la puerta de par en par, y Él hará el resto. Él hace todo, pero a nosotros nos corresponde abrir el corazón de par en par para que Él pueda
sanarnos y hacernos seguir adelante. Os aseguro que seremos más felices.
Mercy and Conversion (cf. Lk 24:45-48)
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!
After his Resurrection, Jesus appeared several times to his disciples before ascending to the glory of the Father. The Gospel passage that we have just heard (Lk 24:4548) recounts one of these manifestations, in which the Lord indicates the fundamental content of the preaching that they must offer the world. We can synthesize it in
two words: “conversion” and “forgiveness of sins”. These are the two qualifying aspects of the mercy of God who lovingly cares for us. Today let us take into consideration conversion.
What is conversion? It is present throughout the Bible, and particularly in the preaching of the
prophets, who continually urge the people to “return to the Lord” by asking him for forgiveness and
changing their ways. Conversion, according to the prophets, means changing direction and turning to
the Lord anew, relying on the certainty that He loves us and his love is ever steadfast. Returning to
the Lord.
Jesus made conversion the first word of his preaching: “Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mk
1:15). With this proclamation he presents himself to the people, asking them to accept his Word as
God’s final and definitive words to humanity (cf. Mk 12:1-11). Speaking of conversion with regard
to the preaching of the prophets, Jesus insists even more on the interior dimension. In fact, it involves the whole person, heart and mind, in order to become a new creature, a new person. Change
your heart and you will be renewed.
When Jesus calls one to conversion, he does not set himself up as judge of persons, but he calls from
a position nearby, because he shares in the human condition, and therefore calls from the street, from
the home, from the table.... Mercy towards those who needed to change their lives came about
through his lovable presence so as to involve each person in his salvation history. Jesus persuaded
people with his kindness, with love and with his way of being, he touched the depths of people’s
hearts and they felt attracted by the love of God and urged to change their lifestyle. For example, the
conversion of Matthew (cf. Mt 9:9-13) and of Zacchaeus (cf. Lk 19:1-10) happened in exactly this
manner, because they felt loved by Jesus and, through Him, by the Father. True conversion happens
when we accept the gift of grace, and a clear sign of its authenticity is when we become aware of the
needs of our brothers and are ready to draw near to them.
Dear brothers and sisters, how many times have we also felt the need to effect a change which would
involve our entire person! How often do we say to ourselves: “I need to change, I can’t continue this
way.... My life on this path will not bear fruit; it will be a useless life and I will not be happy”. How
often these thoughts come, how often!... And Jesus, who is near us, extends his hand and says,
“Come, come to me. I’ll do the work: I’ll change your heart, I’ll change your life, I will make you
happy”. But do we believe this, yes or no? What do you think: do you believe this or not? Less applause and more voice! Do you believe or not? [‘Yes!’]. So it is. Jesus who is with us invites us to
change our life. It is He, with the Holy Spirit, who sows in us this restlessness to change our life and
be a little better. Let us follow, therefore, this invitation of the Lord and let us not put up resistance,
because only if we open ourselves to His mercy will we find true life and true joy.
All we have to do is open the door wide, and He will do the rest. He does everything, but we must
open our heart wide so that he can heal us and make us go forward. I assure you that we will be
much happier.
