Second Sunday of Easter
April 3, 2016
SAINT MARY PARISH
My brothers and sisters in the Risen Lord,
Happy Divine Mercy Sunday!. The Second Sunday of Easter
takes us to the Room where the Risen Lord encountered the
disciples and gave them peace. Peace be with you, whose sins
you forgive are forgiven and whose sins you retain are retained.
In the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis “has established by plenary
indulgence… so that the faithful might receive in abundance the
gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit… In this way, they can
foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after
they have obtained God’s pardon, they in turn might be
persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters.”
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed this Sunday at Saint
Charles Parish at 3:00 p.m. May you rejoice in the gift of Mercy
offered to all by the Risen Lord and grow in granting mercy to
others. Happy Easter Alleluia.
– Father Michael
APRIL APPEAL
In two weeks, we will have our Semi-Annual April Appeal. We
hold this collection to cover our winter expenses. Obviously, it
has been a warmer winter than the previous one so our heating
costs are down. This does not mean that all our costs are way
down. Even though we had very little snow, we still pay the
contract from November through March whether it snows or not.
Some years we pay more but other years we pay less for the
amount of labor. If we were not on a contract last year, the parish
might have gone bankrupt. So we still need your support for the
April Appeal. We also will be paying for a few big items in the
coming months. The doors, the kneelers for the back of the
Church and more lighting for the Church Sanctuary. So thank
you in advance for your past stewardship and for being as
generous as possible with this year’s April Appeal.
FIRST COMMUNION BREAKFAST
The first of our First Communion Ceremonies will take place on
Sunday, April 24 at 10 a.m. This will be followed by a
Communion Breakfast in the lower hall following the Mass. We
invite everyone to join us for the Breakfast. Tickets are $5 and
will start to be sold next week after the 10 a.m. Mass.
EASTER CANDLE
I encourage you to take a close up view of the Easter Candle. It
was designed and decorated by our fellow parishioner, Argeni
Gudiel. This year, the candle depicts scenes and aspects of the
life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis is seen speaking to the
wolf who he tamed at the city of Gubbio. He is also preaching to
the birds as he did do many times. The Cross of the candle is the
TAU, which was how Francis always drew when he signed his
name. It is the Cross of the Franciscan Order. At the top of the
candle is Brother Sun and Sister Moon which he sang in His
Canticle of Creation. And at the base of the candle is the
dripping of blood reminding us of the Stigmata that Francis
received before his death. I am pretty sure that this Easter Candle
is the most beautiful in the whole world.

p.m. and Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. Anyone
in need of physical healing is encouraged to come forward for
the anointing. Anyone who is physically healthy is encouraged to
come and pray for the sick.
HOLY WEEK THANK YOU
A great big thank you to all who helped out in small and in great
ways this Holy Week. It is always a huge undertaking and it
could not be done without the help of so many people – the
singer, lectors, communion ministers, ushers, those who worked
behind the scenes to make sure all the details were taken care of,
and Francis the Lamb.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in the midst of us and says:
“Peace be with you!”
During Mass we turn to each other and say “Peace be with you!”
As you put your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul poor box you
say “Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.
Lord Jesus, your resurrection brought forgiveness to the
disciples, fill us with your peace! For the grace “to do your good
works”, fill us with your strength! For the grace to forgive and
to be forgiven, fill us with your compassion! For the grace to be
witnesses to your resurrection, fill us with your joy! Amen.

RECTORY TORN DOWN
There is a new look to the neighborhood since the rectory was
torn down last week. We have been told that – surprise – there
will be condos built on the lot. We have heard either six or seven
units are being planned but we do not have confirmation of this.
Let us pray that we get new good neighbors who enjoy living in
Waltham.
HEALING MASS APRIL 7
There will be a Healing Mass on Thursday April 7 at 7:00 p.m.
in the chapel at St. Charles. Healing Masses take place on the
first Thursday of each month. All are welcome to join us for
prayer for physical, spiritual or emotional healing.
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY - APRIL 3 FROM 3:00-4:00 PM
Please join us to celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy. The prayer
service will consist of Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament, Divine Mercy Litany of Reparation, Chaplet of
Divine Mercy, readings from the Diary of St. Faustina, and The
Litany in Praise of The Divine Mercy. Don’t miss out as we
celebrate God’s infinite mercy and forgiveness for all of us on
this great day of mercy and especially during this year of special
grace for the church.

Q: M ay I ask you about your experiences as confessor to hom osexual people? During the press conference on your return
flight from Rio de Janeiro you famously remarked, “Who am I to judge?”
A: On that occasion I said this: if a per son is gay and seeks out the Lor d and is willing, who am I to judge that per son? I was
paraphrasing by heart the Catechism of the Catholic Church where it says that these people should be treated with delicacy and not be
marginalized. I am glad that we are talking about “homosexual people” because before all else comes the individual person, in his
wholeness and dignity. And people should not be defined only by their sexual tendencies: let us not forget that God loves all his creatures and we are destined to receive his infinite love. I prefer that homosexuals come to confession, that they stay close to the Lord, and
that we pray all together. You can advise them to pray, show goodwill, show them the way, and accompany them along it.

Second Sunday of Easter
April 3, 2016
