San Antonio gears up for STEM Week

STEM conference and the wonderful work that the Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce does as a
key initiative for the city and for
the growth.”
Angela Bedoya, facilities engineer at Marathon Oil, said that
over the past five years companies
have invested millions of dollars
in South Texas, but there is a gap
in industry needs.
“According to the Department
of Education, only 16 percent of
high school students are interested in pursuing STEM careers,”
Bedoya said. “At this rate, the
United States as a whole will not
be able to maintain a competitive
stand in global competitiveness.”
Mayor Ivy Taylor thanked the
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
for addressing the need to build
careers in STEM and applauded
their efforts.
“Connecting all San Antonians
to the opportunities for a stable,
well-paid, in-demand job is one
of my top priorities as mayor
of our wonderful city,” Mayor
Taylor said.
Several events and activities
will be held throughout the city
to promote science, technology,
engineering and mathematics.
The week will kick off on
Saturday, Nov. 14 with “STEM
Family Day” at several college

San Antonio.
The Hispanic Chamber’s annual CORE4 STEM Expo is
STEM Week’s signature event
and will take place Nov. 14, 17
and 18. The event will bring
together more than 3,500 middle
school students from five innercity school districts to participate
in STEM related activities.
“By 2020, 80 percent of the
jobs in America will require a
STEM Education,” said Ramiro
Cavazos, Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce president and CEO.
“This is our sixth year running
the largest STEM expo in San
Antonio and we do it through
many of our members.”
Representatives from Toyota,
H-E-B, USAA, Tesoro, San
Antonio Water System (SAWS),
Marathon Oil and UTSA were
on hand to underscore the importance of an education in STEM
and to express their support for
the chamber’s annual expo.
“The interest is to create awareness at the middle school level to
our future engineers and advanced
manufacturing technicians to help
the economic development of San

to Northwest Vista College

Alamo Colleges – Northwest
Vista College (NVC) will soon
be able to improve student graduation rates and math completion
thanks to a new federal grant.
Congressman Joaquin Castro
visited the NVC campus Friday
morning to award the college an
individual federal Title V grant
for Hispanic Serving Institutions
of $2,343,984 from the Department of Education, Office of
Postsecondary Education (OPE).
The five-year grant will benefit
“Project Math Paths,” designed to
improve NVC’s three-year graduation rate and math completion by
welcoming, advising, placing and
accelerating students through the
math core and eliminating developmental math hours.
“The vision of this project came
from the math faculty. They understood that if we can get people
through math, we improve graduation and success rates for all disciplines across the campus,” said
NVC President Ric Baser, Ed.D.

and are excited that this project…

Everybody remembers his or her
school days waiting at the cafeteria
line for food only to wish the food
provided tasted better.
Today, students from the San
Antonio Independent School
District (SAISD) will have the
opportunity to have a pleasant
breakfast and lunch during school
hours. This week, SAISD held
their first-ever Food Extravaganza,
an event that is slowly becoming
a yearly staple to determine which
menu items are suitable for the
students needs.
The event was held for students
to have the opportunity to not only
taste a flavor they have not tasted
before at the cafeteria, but also
to eat healthier. Faculty and staff
no longer want the students to eat
foods that will not help them at a
time where they are growing into
young adults.
“Well the reason why it is important to have nutritious meals
first of all is because our children
are still growing. They need those
vitamins, minerals and fats, good
fats and carbohydrates to help
them grow, to help them think,
to be able to do and to stay active
throughout the day,” discussed
Patricia LeClar, senior director
for the child nutrition at SAISD,
to La Prensa.
Students had to sample 25
featured food and beverage items
including three different types
of Chicken Teriyaki to different
kinds of beverages including B.W.
Cooper’s Mango Green Tea. All
of these items will help the district
find the right breakfast and lunch
options to provide students the
right nutrients to grow.
Once the students were finish
at each taste-testing table, they
provided written and verbal feedback. In some cases, they were
blind-tested to try three different
versions of the same product.

135 high school students, grades

Comentarios... El reino de los súper ricos
La historia es
absolutamente
cierta. Estados
Unidos es el
país de las oportunidades. Yo he
Jorge Ramos visto a gente muy
pobre convertirse
en millonaria. Pero también es
cierto que, poco a poco, eso está
cambiando, y este país se está
transformando en el reino de los
súper ricos.
Primero el billete. Estados Unidos tiene más billonarios, según la
revista Forbes, que cualquier otro
país del planeta. En Estados Unidos
había más billonarios este año (536)
que todos los que existen en China
(213), Alemania (103) y Rusia (88).
Y aquí estamos definiendo como
billonario a cualquier que tenga
más de mil millones de dólares en
dinero, inversiones y propiedades.
Estados Unidos se creó bajo el
principio de que todos los seres
humanos son iguales y, por lo
tanto, tienen los mismos derechos y
oportunidades. La realidad es otra.
Muchos aquí son maltratados y
discriminados, y no todos tienen las
mismas oportunidades educativas y
financieras.
Quien más ha estado denuncian­
do esta desigualdad económica en
la campaña presidencial norteameri-
cana es el senador demócrata Bernie
Sanders, que se describe a sí mismo
como socialista. La décima parte del
1 por ciento más rico del país”, dijo
hace poco el senador Sanders, tiene
casi la misma riqueza que el 90 por
ciento más pobre.”
Esto, definitivamente, no suena
como una sociedad muy igualitaria.
Y en eso coincide Ben Bernanke,
exdirector del banco central de Estados Unidos y quien acaba de publi­
car su libro “The Courage to Act”
(El Valor de Actuar). La economía
de Estados Unidos no está sirviendo
a toda la población de la manera en
que quisiéramos, me dijo Bernanke
en una entrevista. La desigualdad
está empeorando y así ha ocurrido
por mucho tiempo. En los últimos
40 años hemos visto que los salarios
y las fortunas se están distribuyendo
de manera muy desigual. Es un
problema que necesita solución.”
De hecho, si comparamos a
Estados Unidos con los países más
desarrollados del mundo, no sale
muy bien parado. La disparidad de
ingreso entre los norteamericanos
es una de las peores dentro del
grupo de las 34 naciones más ricas
del mundo, según la comparación
hecha por el centro Pew. En cambio, las sociedades más igualitarias
son, en este orden, Corea del Sur,
Suiza, Islandia, Noruega, Holanda
y Dinamarca.
La desigualdad en Estados Unidos es algo que se siente y se ve
cada vez más. En Nueva York, por
ejemplo, me sorprende la enorme
riqueza de los que viven y trabajan
cerca de las nubes frente a la infinita
pobreza de los que sobreviven en
las calles y laboran en las cocinas
de los restaurantes. Esto es algo que
denunció el papa Francisco hace
poco y uno de los principales retos
del alcalde neoyorquino Bill de
Blasio. Sin embargo, el problema
no es único de Nueva York, y se
nota en muchas áreas.
Veamos el ejemplo de los estudiantes. Es cierto que muchas
universidades, los estados y el
gobierno de Estados Unidos ayudan
con becas y préstamos a los alumnos más necesitados. Pero miles de
estudiantes, junto con el diploma, se
llevan una deuda gigantesca.
El año pasado la deuda por los
préstamos estudiantiles superaba
el 1.2 billones de dólares, según la
revista The Economist. Los recién
egresados tienen, entonces, una
doble responsabilidad: encontrar
trabajo y pagar su préstamo universitario. Y no todos pueden. Estamos
creando, por lo tanto, una nación de
universitarios deudores.
Estados Unidos es, todavía, una
nación que da grandes oportuni-
dades para reinventarse. Yo lo hice
hace más de 30 años y he visto cómo
miles se han creado aquí una nueva
vida. Por eso tantos inmigrantes
quieren venir.
Pero el peligro es que el mismo
sistema que permite la creación de
tantas fortunas se está cerrando para
los que no son parte del club de los
multimillonarios. Fácil sería pedirle
a los más ricos que regresaran a la
sociedad parte de lo que acumularon. Pero las cosas no funcionan
así. Eso no va a ocurrir.
Los ricos en Estados Unidos están
ganando muchísimo más dinero del
que pueden gastar ellos y sus familias durante varias generaciones.
¿Cómo se puede gastar un individuo
mil millones de dólares en 70 u 80
años? Eso es casi imposible. Por
lo tanto, no tiene ningún sentido,
como país, crear una nueva clase
alta con más dinero del que pueda
gastar e invertir socialmente. Es un
desperdicio.
Y así, el país que surgió hace más
de 200 años bajo la idea de igualdad
de oportunidades está perdiendo la
igualdad y las oportunidades. El
reino de los súper ricos acecha.

Just a Thought: Veterans Day

was Veterans
Day. As a
Vietnam and
Desert Storm
veteran myself, I always
look forward
Steve Walker to this time of
the year when
people go out of their way to say
“Thank you for your service.”
It wasn’t always so in the past,
when thousands of other soldiers,
as well as me returned from combat in the Republic of Vietnam. I
returned in 1971 for a 30-day leave
before deploying to my next assignment in Augsburg, Germany.
I was assigned to the Big Red One
as a company clerk. That tour completed my active duty commitment.
From there in 1972, I came home to
San Antonio and began my career
as a middle school English teacher.
I spent 26 years in the public school
classroom.
When I came back home, I was
reassigned to the 90th ARCOM on
Harry Wurzbach Road. It began my
27-year career in the Army Reserve.
Those were some great years. The
highlight was being assigned for
23 of those years in the Public Affairs field.
The Army trained me to be a
broadcast and print photojournalist.
Those military skills have come in
handy over the years by aiding me
land various civilian jobs in local
radio, TV and newspaper, which
also includes a weekly column in
La Prensa!
Looking back on my tour in
Vietnam, it is now the right thing
to thank veterans for their previous
service in any conflict, as well as
those now wearing a uniform serving in conflict or peacetime.
Back when the Vietnam War
concluded, many of us heard much
uglier comments as we went about
our day-to-day business after coming home. Comments made included “Did you napalm children?”
to “Why didn’t you just cross the
border to Canada to avoid the
draft?” Thank God those days are
over. Veterans are proud to serve.
Historically President Woodrow
Wilson first proclaimed Armistice
Day for Nov. 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said:
“To us in America, the reflections
of Armistice Day will be filled with
solemn pride in the heroism of those
who died in the country’s service
and with gratitude for the victory,
both because of the thing from
which it has freed us and because
of the opportunity it has given
America to show her sympathy with
peace and justice in the councils of
the nations.”
For those who studied history,
the United States Congress passed
a concurrent resolution seven years
later on June 4, 1926, requesting
that President Calvin Coolidge
issue another proclamation to
observe Nov. 11 with appropriate
ceremonies.
On May 13, 1938, the 11 of Nov.
was officially proclaimed a legal
holiday: “a day to be dedicated to
the cause of world peace and to be
thereafter celebrated and known as
“Armistice Day.”
President Dwight D. Eisenhower,
signed a bill into law in 1954 replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,”
and it has been known as “Veterans
Day” since.
We have two local San Antonio natives, Santiago Erevia and
Jose Rodela, who were awarded
the Congressional Medal of Honor, March 18, 2014 by President
Barack Obama at the White House,
along with 15 other Hispanics.
We honor them and all veterans
who served from San Antonio and
every state.
In all, 61 Hispanic Americans
were awarded the prestigious Medal
of Honor to include News 4 WOAI
Reporter Cleto Rodriguez’ grandfather and name sake, WWII hero
Cleto Rodriguez. There is even a
highway in the Alamo City named
after Cleto’s grandfather.
To all those who served, “Thank
you for your service.”
As always, I write just a thought.

This past
Wednesday,
I was proud
to attend two
events celebrating VetTrey Martinez erans Day. I
Fischer
was excited
to speak with
children at Roy Cisneros Elementary about the legacy of Mr. Cisneros
and honoring our Veterans.
If you don’t know the story, Corporal Cisneros is a 1967 graduate of
Edgewood High School who joined
the Marines right after graduation.
Corporal Cisneros gave his life
in an intense firefight where his
leadership and determination were
instrumental.
For his heroism, Cisneros was
posthumously awarded the Navy
Cross, the second highest award
a Marine can receive. Cisneros
was one of ten members of the
Edgewood class of 1967 to die in
Vietnam. I was honored to author
legislation in 2011 giving Corporal
Cisneros the Texas Legislative
Medal of Honor, the highest award
that can be awarded to a member of
the Texas Military Forces.
I then attended a Veterans Day
ceremony with Lanier High School
alumni. In addition to the traditional Veterans Day observances,
a memorial service was held for
the 75 Lanier graduates who have
given their lives in armed conflicts
from World War II to Desert Storm.
Lanier alumni also dedicated the
school’s JROTC building to John
Jesse Saldaña, Sr., valedictorian of
the Lanier High School Class of ‘39
and recipient of a Bronze Star and
two Purple Hearts in World War II.
Honoring our veterans, however,
should not be limited to one day a
year. We need to uphold our promise to veterans and make sure they
have access to opportunities and the
resources they need. I was proud to
help honor that promise and work
for our veterans on several issues
this year.
First and foremost was working
to make sure the Hazlewood Act
was protected, so that our veterans and their families continue to
have the opportunity to improve
their lives and further their education. These benefits are vital and
should not ever be tampered with.
Unfortunately, some in the Texas
Senate tried to take these benefits
away while others even tried to
limit access to those who needed
it the most.
I was also proud to be a lead
author in the creation of the Texas
Women Veterans Program (House
Bill 867). This is the first everpermanent program for women veterans in Texas and only the fourth
program in the entire country. The
Texas Women Veterans program
will connect women veterans with
the benefits they have earned and
will work to bring women veterans and women student veterans
together.
Finally, I was also a lead author
for the recently passed constitutional amendment that will allow
surviving spouses of a 100 percent
or totally disabled veteran who
passed before 2011 to qualify for
existing property tax exemptions.
I was proud to help guide this
legislation through to make sure
all surviving veteran spouses are
treated equally.
San Antonio is called Military
City USA for a reason. We have
one of the largest active and retired
military populations in the country.
We must continue to honor the
service and sacrifices of so many
who have served in the US Armed
Forces and call our city home.

de dos horas de estar parado,
mostrando lo mejor de su repertorio económico y político, los
candidatos republicanos gestaron
el mejor de los cuatro debates que
se realizaron hasta hoy. Se notó
claramente quienes se perfilan mejor hacia la presidencia y quienes,
desde hoy, estarán pensando en
su retiro.
Ganadores. No hay duda, Marco
Rubio se siente como si estuviera
en su casa cada vez que se presenta
en los debates. La noche del martes no fue diferente a los otros tres
anteriores. Desde el inicio mostró
sus dotes de gran orador, supo
encarar con firmeza las preguntas
y demostró mucho conocimiento.
Tuvo dos momentos importantes que propiciaron el aplauso
de la concurrencia. Inicialmente
cuando comentó que un soldador
gana más dinero que una persona con título de filosofía y luego
cuan­do respondió a una pregunta
concreta sobre su experiencia limitada comparada con la de Hilla­ry
Clinton.
Con una sonrisa dibujada en el
rostro y muy seguro de sí mismo
manifestó: “Esta es una elección
generacional (…). Cuando el electorado nacional decida entre Hilla­
ry Clinton y yo, estarán eligiendo
entre un candidato del pasado y
otro del futuro”. Hizo vibrar a
sus seguidores, aunque está vez
se notó el tono mecanizado de su
respuesta.
Ted Cruz tuvo también una
buena noche. Discutió cuando
hubo el momento de hacerlo y
levantó la voz cunado sentía que
era necesario y se mostró como
una persona dotada de mucho
conocimiento. Hizo sugerencia de
que el sistema de impuestos es tan
complicado que tiene más páginas
que la propia Biblia.
Carly Fiorina ganó algunos
centímetros, pero no creo que
fueron lo suficiente como para

César Chávez” se planea una
manifestación en favor de la
orden ejecutiva del presidente
Obama que tiene la intensión
de proteger a millones de trabajadores indocumentados, la
mayoría de origen mexicano, que
desde hace tiempo son el objetivo
de maniobras políticas por parte
de funcionarios republicanos
que pretenden una impráctica
deporta­ción masiva.
Jaime Martínez, director de
esta fundación, declaró que se
organiza esta manifestación (a la
cual se invitará a grupos locales
y de otras entidades) a consecuencia de la maquinación de
26 gobernadores estatales del
Partido Republicano que califican
de “ilegal” la orden ejecutiva
del presidente que en esencia
contiene un espíritu humanitario.
Recientemente, ante los medios
informativos el presidente Obama
anuncio órdenes ejecutivas que
tienen la intención de proteger
de deportación a unos 5 millones
de trabajadores provenientes de
diversos países de Latinoamérica.
El presidente enfatizó en el
hecho de que tiene la autoridad legal para ello, y que tales

project was Dr. Anna Harwin,
mathematics professor at NVC.
“By being allowed to do this
project, we should be able to
change the math trajectory in this
city. 606 students were moved
this semester out of harm’s way
from long path, high-risk [failed]
courses to lower-risk, shorter path
courses,” said Dr. Harwin.
“Project Math Paths” is a creative and innovative approach that
will advise and place students in
the appropriate math classes, and
avoid those courses that they are
not prepared for, as well as offer
them supportive services.
Congressman Castro, a strong
advocate for higher education,
was happy to attend the ceremony
to present the check to NVC, and
congratulated the students’ hard
work on achieving their dreams.
“STEM is incredibly important
because it is often the STEM
subjects where students struggle,
so this grant will be important
in helping students get over the
hump of those classes,” said
Congressman Castro. “Many of
the new jobs in the United States
require STEM experience, understanding and mastering, so we
need to make sure that students
achieve that.”
NVC opened in 1995 and is
a two-year institution which
currently offers academic and
technical courses to 18,000 students pursuing associate degrees,
certificates and transfer credits.
Approximately 60 percent of
these students are Hispanic.

SAISD has long been factoring student feedback about food
items into its menu decisions, but
the Extravaganza marks the first
time Child Nutrition Services
staff will engage directly with a
large group of students to solicit
instant feedback. In the past, new
food items were tested only during
meal times at various campuses,
where surveys were provided and
collected. The feedback was used
in developing menus.
“We have always gotten student’s opinions and sent items
to different campuses within the
same district. We have also met
with our student advisory committee, but this year, we wanted a
larger range of students and gain
that personable experience to tell
us what they like, the things that
they don’t like, the things that they
want to see, that’s why we did it
this way,” said LeClar.

sandwich and it tasted really well. I
would suggest them for next year.”
Now that students have the
voice to choose their cafeteria
menu, this will give more districts
to not only teach students, but to
also learn from the students. The
new cafeteria menu will be provided for students from SAISD in
August of 2016.

Diabetes and weight
management—¡Si se puede!

Many of us are overweight,
one third of Americans or one
third of the rest of America,
which is medically obese.
In the Latino community, it’s
even worse—42.5 percent of
adults Latinos are obese. Being overweight or obese makes
us more likely to have heart
disease, stroke, diabetes and
some types of cancer. These
things are preventable by losing weight. You heard me.
Preventable.
Guidelines provided by the
CDC regarding management
of diabetes tell us that losing
five to 10 percent of our body
weight can be enough to avoid
diabetes if we are high risk or
pre-diabetic. For diabetics, the
same modest weight loss can go
a long way to managing sugar
levels to avoid complications
of diabetes. So let’s do the
math. Let’s say you weigh 240
pounds. Ten percent of 240 is
24 pounds; five percent of that
is 12 pounds.
That is a very reasonable,
achievable goal that sounds
a lot easier than saying your
New Year’s resolution will be
to lose 60 pounds and get down
to 180 pounds, your fighting
weight in high school. So how
are we going to achieve this?
The solution is heartbreaking
and simple: burn more calories
than you take in. If you can cut
out 250-500 calories a day, in a
week you will lose half to one
pound a week.
A 20-ounce bottle of Big
Red is about 250 calories; the
standard accompaniment, Hot
Cheetos, is about 370 calories
for the big snack bag. You see
where I am going with this.
Exercise has also been proven to decrease the chance of
developing diabetes and helping manage blood sugar in those
that already have diabetes.
Being at work for 10-12 hours
a day does not really count as
exercise for most of us, even if
it’s somewhat physical work.
We all want to work out for
an hour daily, but finding that
time can be very difficult. How
about 10 minutes?
Everyone can find 10 minutes
in a day; find a couple of 10
minutes and you are off to a
great start. Or burn 100 calories at a time! I found this on
Pinterest:
40 jumping jacks
30 crunches
20 squats
10 pushups
This is reported to burn 100
calories; do it three times a day
every day and you are on your
way to losing half a pound to a
pound a week.
The bottom line is this: many
of us are at risk or already have
diabetes. Acting like we don’t
know anything about diabetes is
only going to shorten our lives.
Losing weight is very hard.
Making little changes every day
will provide slow but steady
improvement in our health in
terms of weight loss that will
help us avoid the complications
of diabetes.

also see improvement in your
blood pressure and you will
decrease your risk for certain
cancers associated with being
overweight, like breast and colon cancer. ¡Si se puede!

Study says asymptomatic people can
transmit dengue virus to mosquitoes
EFE - People infected with
the dengue virus, but without
related symptoms, can transmit
it to mosquitoes, which is a risk
factor as such people are more
exposed to the insects than the
ones who know they are sick,
according to a study published
Monday in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.
So far, it was assumed that
virus levels in the blood of asymptomatic people were too low
to infect mosquitoes.
Researcher Philippe Buchy,
from the Pasteur Institute of
Paris, and his team decided
to test the assumption with an
experiment that involved injecting mosquitoes with laboratory
blood from 181 people who had
detectable levels of the virus.
The scientists found the asymptomatic individuals passed
on dengue despite the low virus
levels in their blood.
The study concludes that dengue infections through asymptomatic persons can contribute
more to virus transmission than
what was believed, above all
because these individuals are
exposed to mosquitoes more than
those who already know they are
ill and thus live confined in the
house or hospital.
More than a third of the world’s
population lives in regions at risk
of infection and the dengue virus
is a leading cause of disease and
death in tropical and subtropical
areas, according to data from the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention.
More than 400 million people
annually contract this disease,
caused by any one of four closely
related dengue viruses and transmitted mostly by the Aedes
aegypti mosquito, followed by
Aedes albopictus.
No vaccines for dengue are
available yet, and the most effective safety measures are those
which involve avoiding mosquito
bites.
Early detection of the infection
and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of medical
complications or death.
Dengue emerged as a global
health risk only since the 1950s.
While the disease is quite
rare in the U.S. mainland, it is
endemic in Puerto Rico, as well
as in many tourist destinations in
Latin America, South-East Asia
and the Pacific islands.

CC Sabathia: “Alcoholismo no respeta color de piel”

Por ser del consenso público,
cuando mis tres lectores lean
este testimonio se preguntarán
qué tiene que ver el encabezado
relativo a la sección deportiva.
Por tratarse de un asunto concerniente a la salud personal de
individuos públicos (deportistas
profesionales) se me ocurrió darle
espacio en esta sección de Salud,
en la que me he dado a la tarea de
concientizar a la comunidad de
los peligros que acarrea el alcoholismo y quienes lo padecemos.
El viernes 6 de noviembre
por el canal 12 local KSAT durante el programa “Good Morning
America”, que se transmite a nivel
nacional desde la gran manzana
(Ciudad de Nueva York), la famosa presentadora Robin Roberts
entrevistó al famoso lanzador
zurdo CC Sabathia, de los Yankees de Nueva York.
Roberts posee experiencia de
comentarista gracias a sus 15
años trabajando en el programa
ESPN SportsCenter. Además de
la práctica de baloncesto, tenis
y otros deportes a nivel colegial
cuando cursó estudios superiores
en Southeastern Louisiana University.
Sabathia estuvo en compañía de
su bella esposa Amber, con quien
ha procreado dos hijos varones y
dos princesas. Sin ninguna pena
o remordimiento el jugador declaró abiertamente haber estado
atrapado en los tentáculos del
alcoholismo.
CC Sabathia dejó entrever que
su problema con el consumo de
alcohol lo pudo dominar personalmente, en varias ocasiones,
manteniéndose sobrio por espacio
de dos a tres meses. Sin embargo,
volvía a recaer (sin mencionar
motivos).
“Yo nunca pensé que me estaba
convirtiendo en alcohólico, ya
que mi estilo de tomar bebidas alcohólicas era a escondidas y muy
privado. En los partidos de gira,
en el hotel donde me hospedaba
dejaba vacío el mini-bar que la
mayoría de los cuartos tienen en
los hoteles. Cuando me tocaba el
turno de lanzar, ese día para nada
tocaba la bebida, lo mismo hacía

perdieron (y los envió de vacaciones) durante “el comodín”, que
fue un partido extra de temporada
ante los Astros de Houston para
sacar al cuarto equipo clasificatorio al playoff de la Liga Americana, volvió a la tomada.
Sin embargo, al comentarle
su problema a su esposa, ella lo
convenció para que se internara
en un centro de rehabilitación, lo
cual él, sin dudarlo, hizo durante
el mes de octubre.
“Mi esposo en su rehabilitación
no tenía contacto con amistades
en el exterior. Yo tuve su teléfono y a la vez estuve recibiendo
emotivas muestras de respaldo
de compañeros de equipo y otros
ya retirados, quienes le enviaron
buenos deseos y una pronta recuperación”, dijo Amber Sabathia.

Sabathia dijo que para él fue duro
haber sido presa de la bebida, señalando que en muchas ocasiones
estuvo a punto de hacer público
su problema de alcoholismo, pero

Pero también llegué a pensar que
si decía la verdad sobre mi proble­
ma con el alcohol, los fans me lo
iban a reprochar con desprecio,
por igual directivos y compañeros
de equipo. Por ese factor decidí
dejarlo por la paz, hasta que topé
con duro al final de la temporada,
cuando pude darme cuenta sobre
mi avanzado alcoholismo el cual
no respeta color de piel”, dijo CC.
La noticia corrió como pólvora. Se imprimió en importantes periódicos, así como en
los medios electrónicos que se
especializan en dar ese tipo de
noticias.
El nombre completo de CC
Sabathia es Carsten Charles Sabathia Jr. Tiene 35 años de edad,
es nativo de Vallejo, California, e
incursionó en el béisbol de Ligas
Mayores firmado por Indios de
Cleveland. Marcó su debut el 8
de abril del 2001 jugando con la
misma franquicia hasta la tempo-
rada 2008, siendo transferido en
al club Cerveceros de Milwaukee
donde jugó la campaña 2008.
En diciembre de 2008 firmó
contrato con Yankees por 7 años
con un sueldo de $161 millones
de dólares.
En la pasada temporada (al
parecer su última del contrato con
Nueva York), CC Sabathia ganó
sueldo de $23 millones, por lo
que su problema con el alcohol
se puede asegurar que no era por
su situación económica.
Con Yankees CC ganó anillo
de la Serie Mundial de 2009. Actualmente tiene marca personal
de 214 triunfos por 129 derrotas

razón, el alcoholismo no respeta
color de piel y mucho menos
a personas pudientes y menos
afortunados. Le pega parejo
a todo aquel individuo que se
entrega a la adicción de bebidas
alcohólicas.
El alcoholismo se puede controlar con tratamientos y rehabilitación, más, no se puede curar, ya
que quienes lo padecemos en un
momento inesperado podemos
volver a reincidir y tener larga
recaída. Solo el amor a nuestra familia es el escudo que nos puede
proteger para no volver a recaer.
Yo pronto, si Dios me presta vida
y salud, estaré cumpliendo 16
años de sobriedad.
Así como CC Sabathia estuvo
engañándose ocultando su pro­
blema del consumo desmedido
de bebidas alcohólicas, muchos
deportistas que me tocó conocer
personalmente y que saltaron a la
fama mundial por sus habilidades
en sus respectivas especialidades
se vieron atrapados por el desmedido consumo de drogas y
alcohol.
En los testimonios que regularmente doy cito los nombres de
individuos que gozaron de fama
por sus destrezas en el deporte,
la política y en los negocios.
Muchos de ellos lograron salir
adelante y todavía están firmes
en sus respectivas actividades
en las que, honradamente, siguen
ganándose el pan de cada día.
Otros ya pasaron a mejor vida y
algunos no dejan el “hueso” en la
política o en actividades ilícitas
que según, sino son ellos, alguien
más las tiene que hacer.
En fin desde esta trinchera
le deseo a CC Sabathia que no
quite el dedo del renglón en su
recupe­ración, que siga adelante
viviendo a lo máximo de la compañía y amor de su esposa, su
hijo CC III, de 12 años de edad,

Unidos continúa en aumento, con
los hispanos entre los grupos con
tasas más altas, de acuerdo con un
reporte de los Centros de Control
y Prevención de Enfermedades
(CDC) dado a conocer hoy.
La incidencia de obesidad en los
adultos hispanos en 2014 fue de
42.5 %, comparado con un 34.5
% entre los blancos, 11.7 % entre
los asiáticos y un 48.1 % entre los
afroamericanos.
Asimismo, los investigadores
encontraron una diferencia significativa entre mujeres y hombres
de minorías como los hispanos y
afroamericanos.
La prevalencia de obesidad
entre las mujeres hispanas fue
de 45.7 % en comparación con
un 39.0 % entre los hombres
hispanos.
Los menores hispanos, de 2 a 19
años, fueron el grupo étnico con
mayor prevalencia de obesidad

Roger and Jerry
In the past week and a half, the
Cowboys seem to be a little more
in the headlines than usual.
Well fans can thank defensive
end Greg Hardy for that. In case you
missed it, pictures had spread like
wild fire of his ex girlfriend after a
domestic incident with her last year
on the Deadspin website.
Pictures showed multiple injuries
including intense bruising around
her neck and face.
The media storm the second those
pictures were released was like no
other facing Jerry Jones and the
Cowboys.
With how disturbing those pictures were, people were calling to
give him the boot out of the league.
But of course, Jerry Jones has a rehearsed statement with Greg Hardy
still eligible to play, and Roger
Goodell putting his head down.
Sources have leaked out that
the NFL saw these photos back in
April and gave him the nine game
suspension only to have it reduced
down to four games. The NFL has
become a jungle.
Here’s Jerry Jones’s reasoning: he
saw the photos before signing him to
his team and still pursued him. Since
his return, Cowboys are 0-6, some
in part to Matt Cassell (not so much
Brandon Wheedon), but mostly the
defense.
Jones has called him a “great leader,” but what does he do? He talks to
the media after his first game like a
child; he slaps a clipboard out of a
coach’s hand, and has verbal fights
with teammates. Hardy apologized
after the pictures became public,
but his apology couldn’t be taken
seriously on Twitter.
Hardy has since not taken the
time to publicly apologize to show
some remorse and show he’s serious
about getting better. It’s been two
weeks, and not a word. This week,
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett
finally addressed the Hardy situation. Minutes later, Hardy changed
his name on his Twitter account
to “Perfection” showing serious
signs of him unwilling to change
his attitude.
Jones has been running his team
into the ground since former coach
Jimmy Johnson quit. That was a
decade and a half ago. The Cowboys
will never get the same respect again
after domestic violence controversies first occurred starting with star
wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant
got in trouble for domestic violence
after hitting his mother. But as the
money just keeps rolling in and

On Nov. 1, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and
Tony Parker became the winningest trio in NBA
history. One day later, Duncan shattered another
record with most wins with one franchise in
NBA History. This past Wednesday against the
Portland Trail Blazers he moved up to 7th on the
NBA’s all-time rebounding list.
Andrew Luck is expected to miss at least amonth with a
lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle he
suffered in last Sunday’s matchup against the Broncos.
Chuck Pagano has confidence in his team. “You don’t
want to lose anybody, especially your starting quarterback,” Pagano said. “We’ve been through a ton already
this season and in the past, and we’ll get through it.”

November is the
month of Duncan
This past Sunday’s matchup
in Arlington between the Dallas
Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles
featured big catches, 60 points
scored and an extra quarter of play.
However, the result was a Cowboys loss.
In a season that had so much
promise has been derailed by
injuries on both sides of the ball.
“I think we’re a good football
team. I know some may think
that’s silly to say halfway through
the season when we’ve lost six
in a row,” tight end Jason Witten
said. “There are no moral
victories. That’s
clear and I want
everyone to know
that, especially
the fans.”
“We have to
look at it
o n e
week
at a
time and fight our way out of this.
This team is made up of guys who
fight together and coaches that do
the same,” Witten continued.
Nonetheless, the Cowboys are
in one of the weakest division in
football, the NFC East.
The division has a combined
record of 14-19.
The Giants and Eagles have
four losses including the Redskins
five losses, which gives the Cowboys very little life.
“How we practice and how
we play matters and we emphasize that to our team a lot,”
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. “We
believe that if
you play the
right
way over time you’re going to get
the results you want. The spirit that
we play with, the relentlessness we
play with, the fight we play with
makes me know the kind of guys
we have on our football team.”
The last time the Cowboys captured a victory, quarterback Tony
Romo was under center.
Since then the Cowboys have
gone through two quarterbacks,
Brandon Weeden and current starter Matt Cassel.
Romo’s absence has
played a significant
role in
the
Cowboys underachieving season,
however, they have had opportunities to win multiple games.
Four of the six Cowboys losses
have been decide by a touchdown or less and teammates are
acknowledging that.
“We can’t sit and wait on
Romo,” Defensive end Jeremy
Mincey said. “He’s not Jesus.
We can’t sit and wait on him.
There are games we
could have easily won without him being there. We
have to be
sharper and take advantage of every play and every opportunity to
make something happen. There
are no excuses to how we are
playing. We have to get better.
It’s our fault. We have to suck it
up, keep going and get better.”
Romo is eligible to return in
week 11 against the Miami Dolphins, which means the Cowboys
will play one more game without
him.
With the division technically
still not out of reach the Cowboys
will have to win out to give them
a good shot or just hope the rest
of the division plays poorly in
the second half of the season.
The Cowboys seek to
capture their first victory
since week two today
at 12 p.m. against the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

treinta y cinco años. Tuve una
crianza y enseñanza de vida muy
buenas. Jamás había tocado ni
tan siquiera un cigarro ni alcohol. Trabajé toda mi vida. Es lo
que me enseñaron mis padres.
Así pude llegar a tener con solo
treinta años mis cuatro negocios
propios....
“Hace dos años conocí el peor
castigo que pueda existir. El dinero y la comodidad me jugaron en
contra, y gente a la que no critico,
ya que ellos están enfermos igual
que lo estoy yo ahora. La maldita
cocaína me sentenció y me llevó
a ese infierno que solo el adicto
conoce.... Perdí a mis amigos.
La droga me aisló de lo bueno,
me acercó al infierno. En tan
solo seis meses perdí todos mis
negocios, dos autos y las ganas
de vivir. Nunca imaginé que me

importante que no pierda de vista
que usted no es el único que está

“Usted dice que el dinero, la
comodidad y ciertas personas
(a las que sin duda consideraba
amigas) jugaron en su contra y
fueron factores que contribuye­
ron a su vicio. Las personas que
carecen de recursos económicos
creen que, si solo tuvieran más
dinero, con eso se resolverían
todos sus problemas. Las personas solitarias creen que, si solo
tuvieran amigos, su vida sería
mejor. Y sin embargo usted tenía
todas esas cosas buenas, así como
su feliz y saludable vida pasada,
y a pesar del éxito y de los logros
que obtuvo, es obvio que sintió
que algo faltaba.

“They lived the beatitudes, and
showed the world a better way. It
is easy to live in this world like we
are not meant for more, but this
way of life cannot satisfy. It is not
who we really are. Who are some
of your favorite saints?” he asked.
The archbishop responded,
“Think about them; think about
their lives. They are the ones who
show us how to live with poverty
of spirit, how to be meek, how to
thirst for righteousness, how to
mourn, how to show mercy, how
to live clean of heart, and how to
be peacemakers. In the case of
the martyrs, they teach us how
to be people of joy and of hope,
even when the world persecutes
us and acts against us because of
the name of Jesus. These saintly
brothers and sisters of ours show
us what it really means to be
children of God.”
Archbishop Gustavo emphasized All Saints Day is not just a
time to thank the saints for their
witness, but a day to ask them
for their prayers. “May we ask
the saints to help us with their
prayers, to put aside anything that
distracts us from the love of God,
and from sharing that love in truth
with all we meet.”
The San Antonio prelate
stressed this is especially important as the church throughout the
United States celebrates National
Vocation Awareness Week, telling young sisters and brothers that
this was a weeklong celebration in
which the faithful pray for them
so that they can discern what God
is calling them to do in this lives.
“Many of you are called to be
religious sisters or religious brothers, many of you young men are
called to be priests for the church.
God calls his sisters, brothers and
priests from the members of the
church, from among you,” said
the Missionary of the Holy Spirit.
“Ask the saints today, throughout
this week, and always to pray
for you, so that you can find out
what God is calling you to be.
Then follow that call with joy and
confidence.”
The archbishop then addressed
the role of families in creating a
culture of vocations.
“Do you speak to your children
about how they may be called to
religious life or priesthood? If one
of your children has expressed
interest in a church vocation, have
you helped them explore it?” he
quizzed. “Our pastors, our religious communities, our Vocation
Office, the Vocation Committee
and the Lay Vocation Promoters
working here in the archdiocese
are all ready to help you if you
need guidance. Make your home
part of the vocation culture. Our
youth and young adults need to be
free to follow God’s call in their
lives. This is how we help them
to find true fulfillment in life.”
In his message for the World
Day of Prayer for Vocations,
Pope Francis stated: “The Gospel is the message which brings
freedom to our lives; it transforms
them and makes them all the more
beautiful. How wonderful it is to
be surprised by God’s call, to embrace his word, and to walk in the
footsteps of Jesus, in adoration of
the divine mystery and in generous service to our neighbors!”
Quoting from 1 John that,
“Beloved, we are God’s children
now,” Archbishop Gustavo concluded by saying, “God has called
us to follow the saints in light.
He has called us to proclaim the
Good News to the world, and he
has called many among us to consecrate ourselves in religious life
or priesthood. What great blessings our God has given to us!”
He closed by praying, “May the
queen of all the saints, the Blessed
Mother, Mary, intercede for us on
this great feast. May she help us
to always do as she did, and say
yes to the Lord.”

campaign at his fundraising
reception, which was being
hosted by Democrats and Republicans alike, on Thursday,
Nov. 12 at Liberty Bar.
The reasons for supporting
Albert Uresti are many, including:
• Improved customer service
by extending office hours,
creating faster shorter lines,
installing seating and queuing
systems, and providing friendlier and more professional
service.
• His development and implementation of more payment
options for property owners,
including the only 10-Month
Payment Plan in Texas for senior citizens, disabled citizens,

About 700,000 people have
enjoyed a visit to San Antonio
Aquarium this year. Interactivity
is the key to fun at the aquarium
with feeding opportunities for
stingrays, sharks, tortoises, iguanas, parakeets, lorikeets and
caiman crocodiles. Fun children
activities also include holding
slithering snakes or taking a selfie
with one of their exotic large

District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran led dignitaries,
seniors and area residents in
breaking ground for a new senior
center and dog park in Council
District 3 on Nov. 10.
The project is anticipated to be
ready by November 2016 and is
the second Senior Center to be
fully designed and built by the
City of San Antonio specifically
to meet the needs of seniors.
“This is an great day for District
3 because we are not only continuing to deliver on the promises
to the voters of our bond program,
but also providing much needed
services to our seniors and intergenerational community,” said
Councilwoman Viagran. “This
site will soon become the home
of an incredible asset, investment
and enhancement to Southside Lions Park, District 3 and the City,
making a first-class community
center for our seniors so they can
be active, be healthy, and create
friendships, in a safe environment
they can call their own.”
At over 13,033 square-feet, the
metal, stone and glass building is
designed to sit prominently along
Pecan Valley Drive. The facility will house a reception area,
classrooms and offices, along
with space for health screenings,
exercise and dance activities,
meeting rooms and a warming
kitchen.
A large multi-purpose room
will double as the dining room.
The center will also include a
large front porch that will overlook a great lawn and the South
Side Lions Lake.
“Once completed, this center
will represent our 10 comprehensive senior center and our second
designed and built to meet the
needs of seniors in the community,” added Melody Woolsey,
director of the Department of
Human Services.
The second component of the
project includes a new dog park
within South Side Lions Park.

Honor a los veteranos en su desfile anual

El sábado 7 de noviembre con­
tingentes de las Fuerzas Armadas,
escuelas y carros alegóricos de
organizaciones civiles participaron
en el United States Military Vete­
rans Parade.
El desfile hizo un recorrido
desde El Álamo hasta Milam Park,
recibiendo el aplauso del público
que acudió en muestras de agra­
decimiento por la dedicación y
servicio de los veteranos.
Bajo el lema “Veterans & Com­
munity United”, U.S. Military
Veterans Parade Association y la
ciudad de San Antonio presentaron
el décimo sexto desfile anual en
honor de quienes han servido en
las Fuerzas Armadas, y al mismo
tiempo en reconocimiento del
apoyo que cada veterano recibe
de su familia.

the first thought that comes to

new breakfast options avail­

The Veggie Omelet is a light­

Juan Gabriel demostró, una vez
más, que gracias a su iniguala­ble
talento y carisma siempre será
uno de los favoritos de la ciudad
de El Álamo.
En su segunda visita este año,
el “Divo de Juárez” se presentó
con gran éxito en San Antonio
TX y volvió a conquistar a sus
miles de seguidores que se dieron
cita el jueves en el AT&T Center
para disfrutar del gran espectáculo “Bienvenidos al Noa Noa”.
Acompañado por su orquesta,
mariachi y coristas, Juan Gabriel
salió al escenario a las 8:20 p.m.
en punto y abrió el show con su
tema “México”.
“Buenas noches y muchas gracias por traerme a San Antonio”,
dijo el cantante en la primera
ocasión que se dirigió a sus fieles
seguidores luciendo un pantalón
y chaleco negro con una camisa
azul.
Con una producción de luces
blancas, verdes y rojas, su público no dejó de ovacionar al
“Divo”, quien también brindó
por México.
El cantautor mexicano reunió a más de 10 mil personas en el AT&T Center, quienes disfrutaron del gran espectáculo que ofreció

coreara y gritara en todo momento, mientras él derramaba su
copa de vino, como usualmente

Durante las tres próximas
horas consecutivas, Juan Gabriel
deleitó a los asistentes con su
música y más grandes éxitos, y
fue tanta su emoción que casi
pierde la voz en pleno concierto.
“Qué bonito cantan, todo
México canta. Yo creo que
por eso yo me enseñé a cantar,
porque escuché a tanta gente cantar, tantas estrellas que brillaron
un día aquí en el suelo y ahora
brillan en el cielo. Me gustaría
escucharlos y compartir esta
canción que ya no es mía, es de
ustedes”, dijo el cantante antes
de interpretar “La diferencia”.
Fue una noche llena de aplausos y gritos de cariño, en donde
Juan Gabriel cantó sus temas
como “No vale la pena”, “Costumbres”, “He venido a pedirte
perdón”, entre otras.
Una de las canciones favoritas de la noche fue, sin duda,
“Abrázame muy fuerte”, ya que
en la pantalla gigante se proyectaron imágenes de Juan Gabriel
abrazando a sus amigos que lo
han apoyado a lo largo de su

Rocío Dúrcal, Verónica Castro,

Hotel Emma officially opens its doors

A brewery built in 1894 has
been restored into the city’s
newest luxury hotel.
The San Antonio community
celebrated the grand opening of
Hotel Emma at the Pearl Thursday afternoon.
Silver Ventures, the company
behind the multi-million development of the Pearl Brewery
complex, began toying with
the idea eight years ago. After
some preparation and planning,
construction on the 146-room
hotel began in 2010.
The main goal behind the
transformation was to combine
the history behind the Pearl
Brewery with luxury.
“Today is a very special day,”
CEO of Silver Ventures Christopher “Kit” Goldsbury said. “It
was this day 101 years ago, a
very eventful day in 1914, that
Emma Koehler was set on her
path to operate, and to ultimately
save the Pearl Brewery after the
unfortunate and untimely death
of her husband Otto.”
Goldsbury added that the
brewery has a unique place in
the city’s history and at one
point employed 25 percent of the
people in San Antonio.
“Many people worked their
entire career and together they
produced a product that for
many years was number one
in Texas, and was the absolute
pride of San Antonio,” Goldsbury said.
The brewery was closed in
2001 and was purchased that
same year by Silver Ventures.

disappointment in ‘Spectre’
de Cervantes Prize

The opening of “Spectre” is
an exhilarating adrenaline rush;
James Bond (Daniel Craig) is
adorned in a skeleton disguise,
navigating through a crowded
Mexico streets during the Dia
de los Muertos festival.
The camera keeps tracking
him without interruption as he
locates a suspected terrorist.
The intended target is spotted and a chase ensues; Bond
grapples with the enemy inside
a helicopter – spiraling out of
control over dizzying heights
above the celebration.
Suddenly in my theater, the
digital projection faltered and
the image froze, eliciting groans
amongst the audience as the
lights came up and the movie
vanished from the screen.
It took roughly ten minutes
to get the movie going again,
and I was suspicious that they
accidentally switched films.
The rest of “Spectre,” James
Bond number 24 and Daniel
Craig’s fourth, was the lazy
afterthought of a what-couldhave-been masterpiece spy film.
The plot has about as much
impact as a lazy kick launched
by chastised Bond actor Roger
Moore, whose leg could barely
lift above his waist.
The deflated concept attempts
to tie the previous three Bond
movies into a satisfying conclusion, but like the aim of poor
marksman or an armed goon
attempting to take down 007,
completely misses the target.
After Bond receives a message from M (Judi Dench,
sorely missed in this offering)
post-mortem, asking him to
track down an individual for
information, he uncovers the
conspiratorial “Spectre,” and
discovers that he possesses
deeper ties to its leader. No
spoilers here, but Christoph
Waltz portrays an infamous
antagonist Bond fans are familiar with.
Bond teams up with Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux),
a strong willed daughter of a
former 007 nemesis that he
vows to protect.
Each action scene evokes a
montage of key Bond moments,
similar to a television special
viewers could DVR on Spike
TV. The fight choreography and
elaborate chase scene are carelessly lifted from previous 007
offerings, crossing the line from
clever tribute to lazy plagiarism.
Besides a fight scene on a
moving train directly lifted from
“From Russia With Love,” Dave
Bautista (so good in Guardians
of the Galaxy) is underused as
Mr. Hinx, a Jaws doppelgänger
more interested in throwing out
punches over throwing out any
discernible character development or purpose.
The cinematography by Hoyte
Van Hoytema (Interstellar) is
the film’s saving grace. The
lush settings of the movie are
the equivalent to an animated
painting hung at a cinematic
art museum.
Craig recently engaged in
a series of grumpy interviews
with the media, denouncing the
character and his contract to
return for one final Bond film.
Let’s hope he does; his exceptional series deserves a better send off than this mediocre
offering.

Thursday Spain’s 2015 Miguel
de Cervantes Prize, the Spanishspeaking world’s highest literary honor, with prize money of
around $134,000.

Mendez de Vigo announced at a
press conference that the award
went to Del Paso, who earned
the prize for his “contribution to
the development of the novel and
combining tradition and modernity, as Cervantes did in his time.”
The jury, headed by Fernandez Ordonez, representative of
the Royal Spanish Academy,
declared that Fernando del Paso
is one of Mexico’s most read authors, and considers that awarding
him this year’s prize is a victory
for Cervantes’s literary legacy.

Prize marks the fourth centenary
of publishing the second part of
Cervantes’s Don Quixote, and
the jury highlighted Del Paso’s
production, which includes key
glimpses from Mexico’s history.

The unwritten rule for granting
the Miguel de Cervantes Prize
requires that the award is distributed alternately between Latin
America and Spain.
In 2014 the prize was awarded
to Spanish author Juan Goytisolo.
The Spanish Ministry of Culture established the Cervantes
Prize for the first time in 1975,
in recognition of the career of
Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of the eternal “Don
Quixote.”

Telemundo estrena show “Ya era hora
con Erika y Eduardo” este domingo

Un nuevo show que ofrecerá
noticias de entretenimiento, política,
celebridades y tendencias desde el
punto de vista humorístico de sus
anfitriones es lo que promete “Ya era
hora con Erika y Eduardo”.
La primera emisión del programa
será transmitirá este domingo 15
de noviembre a las 9:00 p.m. Hora
Centro por Telemundo.
El nuevo show será conducido por
Erika de la Vega y Eduardo Videgaray. Y contará con la participación
especial de Boris Izaguirre.
Erika de la Vega tiene experiencia
en televisión con shows como “Eri­
ka Tipo 11”, “El Show de Erika…
Casi Late Night” en Telemundo y
también “Suelta la Sopa”. Ha sido
también anfitriona de “Latin American Idol” por cuatro temporadas y
fue la voz de Dolly en la versión en
español de “Toy Story 3”.
Por su parte, Eduardo Videgaray
es Dj y aportará su humor negro al
show. También ha participado en
“La Sopa”, la versión mexicana de
“The Soup” original de E! Entertainment.
Boris Aguirre ha sido juez en el
mega reality show de Telemundo
“Yo soy el artista”. También ha aparecido en otros programas de televisión como “Crónicas Marcianas”
y “Mira quién baila”, de Televisión
Española. Aguirre tendrá una participación especial en el programa
“Ya era hora con Erika y Eduardo”
con su energía y humor.
En el nuevo programa los tres
anfitriones también realizarán entre­
vistas y parodias con las personalidades actuales más renombradas del
showbiz, cultura y sociedad.
Las experiencias en televisión de Eduardo Videgaray y Erika de la
Vega se unen para estrenar este fin de semana un nuevo programa
que traerá noticias y entretenimiento en un tono humorístico.

Pixar readies the release of “The Good Dinosaur”

launched this month its latest movie,
“The Good Dinosaur,” about the
journey of a dinosaur and his “pet”
through a majestic natural landscape,
all with a realism unprecedented in
an animated cartoon thanks to the
use of the latest technologies, director Peter Sohn told EFE.
“For me the most creative part of
this film was undoubtedly creating
a colossal world for the dinosaur,
which turned out to be enormously
rewarding from a cinematography
standpoint,” Sohn said during the
interview at Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California.
“The Good Dinosaur,” to premiere in the United States on Nov.
25, tells the story of Arlo, an easily
scared dinosaur who gets lost in the
wilderness after falling in a river
and tries to find the way back home
with the help of his mascot, the bold,
brave Spot, who looks like a 6-yearold caveboy but has the heart and
courage of a guard dog.

Arlo depends on Spot to protect
him from his fears, on an emotional
journey that helps him mature and
which tells the story of an alternative world where dinosaurs never
become extinct.
Sohn and his team decided to
switch the roles, turning the dinosaur Arlo into the little boy of the
movie, and Spot, the boy, into a
strong animal.
The film’s producer Denise Ream
said she “loved” the mix of child and
dog that Spot embodies.
“He’s a character I fell in love
with. He’s incredibly entertaining
and with great empathy. I think the
animators here at Pixar did a fantastic job in creating Spot,” Ream said.
The movie locates Arlo in the
wild amid landscapes inspired by
the mountains of the northwestern
United States.
In their search for inspiration,
Sohn and his crew traveled around
the states of Oregon, Montana and
Wyoming, where they made expeditions on horseback and in canoes.
