Bulletin - Cathedral of Christ the King

September 27, 2015
Twenty-sixth Sunday in ordinary time
Dear Parishioners,
I am pleased to announce that we have a new Parish Pastoral Council in place.
For those of you unfamiliar with the group, the Parish Pastoral Council serves
in an advisory capacity to the Pastor.
Following the directives of Vatican Council II that “the laity should accustom
themselves to working in the parish in close union with their priest,” the
Parish Pastoral Council should assist the Pastor in identifying opportunities,
challenges, problems and solutions as together they strive to carry out the
Mission of Christ. They should utilize the many and varied gifts of the laity in
service to the Church.

CTK BELIEVES
On Tuesday, October 13 from 7:30-8:30 am in Kenny Hall, Nancy Coveny,
Executive Director at The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia, will lead a
discussion at BELIEVES entitled “Helping me to say ‘Yes’ Lord – Learning to serve
God with the gifts He has given us.” Bring a friend, come early for Mass at
6:45 am that day, and then stay for networking and Nancy’s discussion.
BELIEVES, a once-a-month speaker series ministry, promotes dialogue around
integrating faith in the work life for both business men and business women. To

Wedding Workshop
If a wedding at the Cathedral is in your future, plan to attend this workshop on
Monday, October 5 at 7 pm in the Cathedral. Members of the Wedding Guild will
explain wedding procedures and answer questions concerning the ceremony.
Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
St. James, in the Second Reading, condemns the wealthy because they have cheated their
laborers of wages and selfishly stored up treasures and wanton luxury on earth. Wealth in
itself is not bad, but we, as Christian stewards belonging to Christ, acknowledge that all
things, including financial resources, come from God. Moses, in the Book of Numbers, and
Jesus, in St. Mark’s Gospel, both teach us how blessed it is to belong to Christ. In a spirit of
thanksgiving and gratitude, we return a portion of these monetary gifts back to the Lord
through our parish offertory, the Catholic Services Appeal, and other worthy causes.

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal Update
So far, 591 CTK donors have made commitments of
treasure to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Christ
the King’s assessed goal for the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is $449,000. To
date, we are approximately $110,000 under goal for this year, with almost 200
fewer donors than we had at this time last year.
We are disciples of Christ. As members of that community, it is our personal
responsibility to make it grow and prosper. We are good stewards when we
make these commitments, and I hope you will make a prayerful and generous
response to this appeal.

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
To celebrate the first annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on
September 1, Middle School students at Christ the King School studied the poster
below in Religion Class. Science teachers continued the discussion by helping
their students to reflect on a question from the Archdiocesan Science Standard:
Have we been given dominion or stewardship over the earth and creation? A
lively and thought provoking discussion was had.
Since the photo was made into a giant puzzle, pieces were distributed to each
Middle School homeroom. As a class, students wrote a group prayer about their
specific aspect of the puzzle. Homerooms then visited the Prayer Garden to pray
and to reassemble the puzzle into a whole, symbolizing the ownership required to
care for God’s tremendous gift of creation.
After learning about a favorite Marian devotion of Pope Francis, under the title,
“Mary, Undoer of Knots,” K-5 homerooms were given a section of knotted rope to
help them to consider the “knots” or problems in our world that need Mary’s
undoing and intercession. After naming their concerns on each knot, they
attached their petitions with flower clips to make a giant Rosary in the Prayer
Garden, where the children prayed for the needs of the earth through Mary’s
intercession. May Mary, the Undoer of Knots…Pray for us!

CTK One of Few
Stops for Choir
The Paderborn Cathedral Choir
from Germany will be performing
at the Cathedral of Christ the King
on Wednesday, October 14 at
7:30 pm. The Cathedral is the
choir’s only stop in Atlanta.
The Paderborner Domchor is
acclaimed as one of Germany’s
most renowned cathedral boys‘
choirs. More than 100 boys aged 8
to 16 years and well over 30
young men sing in various choir
ensembles from the choir's
preschool to a concert choir.
The history of the Domchor in its
present-day form as a four-part
boys’ choir dates back to 1889
when Domkantor Carl Fischer
began to considerably expand
the Cathedral’s existing
Choralschola by adding boys.
In the course of its 125th choir
anniversary, about 75 Domchor
members will embark on a twoweek tour through the USA in
October 2015. The tour program
is focused on the musical
composition of religious services
and concerts in New York (St.
Patrick’s Cathedral), Washington,
St. Louis, and Atlanta.
We are excited to host this unique
event and invite all parishioners to
join us for a free evening of

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
