Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 12, 2015
SENT BY GOD
In Amos’ time the vocation of prophet had
achieved a very formal status in Israel. The prophets
had arisen, originally, to act as God’s voice when
Israel was no longer led by the spiritual/civil figures
known as “judges,” but by monarchs. Over time, the
monarchy had appropriated the offices of priest and
prophet, established them into companies, and
reserved the right to appoint courtly prophets. Then,
as now, when those in power also got to choose who
would act as their official conscience, things
sometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up
prophets from unlikely places, and this is how Amos
received his vocation as prophet. In last week’s
Gospel we heard how Jesus was raised up as God’s
anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. As
we continue to discern our own vocation as baptized
disciples, we can be assured that we are, in Paul’s
words, “chosen, destined in accord with the purpose
of the One who accomplishes all things according to
the intention of his will” (Ephesians 1:11).

Dear Parishioners,
Today we welcome Father Rafael J. Perez as the celebrant of the 11:30 am mass. We offer him
our prayerful congratulations and wish him a very happy, holy and fulfilling ministry in Divine Mercy
Parish in the Williamsburg / Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. All are welcome to greet Father Perez
in the Msgr. Cavanagh Room after the mass.
This weekend I will speak at all the masses about “Generations of Faith” which you have
probably seen in The Tablet.
Next weekend, we will have a visiting priest speak about the needs of his diocese in India.
Our Bishop assigns the missionaries to make a personal appeal to us here in Brooklyn so that we can
hear firsthand the needs of the church in other parts of the world.
Father will ask for your prayers and a monetary gift for the people he serves. Thank you, in
advance, for your generosity in next week’s second collection for the Church in India.
Next Monday, Bishop DiMarzio will ordain two of our Brooklyn priests as auxiliary bishops in
St. Joseph Co - Cathedral at 2:00 pm. The liturgy will be televised on channel 97 (NET).
Please keep Bishops-elect James Massa and Witold Mroziewski in your prayers.
Let’s pray for each other

“El Señor me habló asi: Antes de darte la vida, ya te habia yo escogido; antes de que nacieras,
ya te habia yo apartado; antes de que nacieras, ya te habia yo apartado; te habia destinado a ser
profeta de las naciones. Yo conteste: ¡Hay Señor! ¡Yo soy muy joven no sé hablar! Pero el me
dijo: “No digas que eres joven. Tu irás donde yo te mande, y diras lo que yo te ordene. No
tengas miedo de nadie, pues yo estaré contigo para protegerte. Yo el Señor doy mi pababra.”
