Sacramental Life of our Parish
Baptism for children (under the age of 7) is celebrated in
English on the first three Sundays at 1 pm; in Spanish on
the last Sunday of the month at 1 pm; in Kreyol on the 3rd
Saturday at 1 pm. Parents attend a preparation session on
the first Monday of the month from 8 to 9:30 pm in the
church. Please call the Parish Center (334-0021) to make
arangements to speak to one of our priests or deacons
about your child’s upcoming baptism.
Celebration of Marriage
Please call the Parish Center (334-0021) at least six
months in advance to make arrangements for an interview
with one of our parish deacons or priests who will meet
with the engaged couple, set the time and date of the
wedding and make arrangements for our parish marriage
preparation program.
Rite of Christian Initiation
Adults who have never been baptized are prepared for the
reception of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism,
Eucharist and Confirmation) through the RCIA process.
Other adults may have already been baptized, but are
seeking to receive Eucharist and/or Confirmation. Those
interested in knowing more about the process of becoming
a full member of the Catholic Church are invited to call
Sister Ann Horn at 516-333-9434. Parents who have
school-aged children who have never been baptized are
also invited to speak to Sister Ann about their process of
preparation for these sacraments.
Sacraments of School Age Children
Our parish religious education program prepares children
for the celebration of the sacraments of Eucharist,
Reconciliation and Confirmaton. The norm is that children
receive a two-year preparation for Reconciliation and
Eucharist (normally celebrated in the second grade) and a
two-year preparation program for Confirmation (normally
celebrated in the eighth grade). Our religious education
program deepens the experience of faith and religious
formation in the years betweeen the celebrations of these
sacraments.
Parents who have children older than first grade and are
seeking to have them receive the sacraments of Eucharist
(First communion), Reconciliation or Confirmation are
asked to call the Religious Education office.
Communion to the Sick and Homebound
Anyone who is not able to attend Mass because of frailty,
chronic or temporary illness, or admission to hospice can
have Holy Communion brought to them at home on a
regular basis. Please call the parish office to make
arrangements for a lay minister to bring holy communion.

Breaking Open the Word
Reflecting on next Sunday’s Gospel before you come to Mass can bring
so much more meaning to your experience of liturgy. Here’s the gospel
for next Sunday. How does this Gospel touch your life?
November 1st - The Feast of All Saints
Matthew 5:1-12a
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,
and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."
6
All saints are saints in Christ. Without him there is no existence,
nor holiness. In the Litany of Saints we formally note those
women and men whose lives and witness exemplify the Beatitudes of the Blessed One in whom they have flourished, and in
whom we too are called to flourish. They are the “poor in spirit”,
the humble, who know their need for God; they mourn, especially
due to human alienation from God; they are merciful, singleheartedly attached to God and offer peace. Let us celebrate the
saints by joyfully sharing our gifts with one another.
Gospel Reflection
Questions
• What is the particular
form of holiness that God
is calling you to in your
life?
• What experience on
earth do you think gives
the best picture of the life
of the saints in heaven?
• How would you describe
the main virtues needed for
a modern-day saint?
Some Questions for
Families & Children
• Who are the saints among
your family and friends,
living or deceased?
• Can anyone become a
saint?
• How do the saints in
heaven help us?

presentation of some of the needs
of the building itself. I have also
raised other needs for our parish
that we might want to address at
this time as well. As I have
repeatedly said, pastors come and
go. This is your church and I
need to hear your concerns about
our beautiful Church building.
I have scheduled three such
listening sessions: For the
English speaking members of our
community (and those who
understand English as a second
language), I would like to invite
you to participate in one of two
possible sessions: Wednesday,
November 11th at 7:30pm in
the school chapel, or Sunday,
November 15th at 4:30pm in
Code Auditorium (A time that
can benefit the people from our
Haitian community). For the
Spanish-speaking members of the
community, I have scheduled a
listening session on Sunday,
November 8th at 1:30pm in the
school chapel.

I invite you to look closely at the details of today’s gospel, for the gospel
tells the story about the nature of prayer itself. Jesus is in the city of
Jericho, a fairly well populated oasis city in the southern part of Israel.
Because of Jesus’ popularity at this point in his ministry, a crowd of people
accompanies him. Bartimaeus is a bit of an opportunist. He knows there will
be a crowd and so this provides the perfect opportunity to get some
handouts.
“Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” Son of David is a flattering title and
may be just the ticket to get some assistance. The townspeople know this
beggar all too well. They may even have been annoyed over the years by his
manipulative tactics, and so they try to silence him. “This is not the time nor
the place to beg.” But Bartimaeus is not going to let a good opportunity to
pass by. He cries out all the more.
Jesus calls him over and asks, “What is it you want me to do for you?”
There is something incredibly powerful in that question. Even though blind,
Bartimaeus senses that he is being looked upon with great love and mercy.
He immediately comes to know his heart’s deepest desire and he believes
that it is safe to share that desire with the man of God himself. So, with
courage, faith and hope he says, “Lord, I so desire to see.” And having
received his sight, he follows Jesus – to Jerusalem.
Now, let’s look at this gospel as a means of teaching us how to pray. Our
life can be so consumed with the necessities of day-to-day living. I just want
to get through this challenge, this problem. I am like a blind person begging
for a handout. Even my prayer may be just a wish list of things I want God
to take care of for me. We cry out for help and we are not even aware if God
is even listening. There are voices of discouragement – not coming from the
outside crowd but from our own disappointed heart. This is ridiculous –
why bother even asking? God isn’t going to pay attention to me.
But for some reason, we persist in our prayer even though the inner voices
tell us it’s a waste of time. Maybe like the blind man we cry out all the more
for help. And then, the call, the invitation of Jesus is heard. “Draw closer to
me.” I may even discover in that moment that there is a community of faith
that is encouraging me to draw closer to Jesus, that he is not uncaring or
distant or even indifferent to my need. In that moment, my heart begins to
open and I hear Jesus ask me, “What is it I can do for you?”
Today, Jesus speaks to your heart and invites you to explore what are your
heart’s deepest desires. Perhaps you may become aware of the big picture –
and even the need for a conversion of heart where you ask Jesus not so
much to change your circumstances but change the very way in which you
see life itself. How Jesus so desires to give you that vision of the big
picture!

For the Love of Mercy
-- Father Tony
As we come to celebrate the 100 years of our beautiful Saint
Brigid Church building, I ask you to reflect upon what makes this
building so special – special enough that we want to spend the
money to preserve it for generations to come. For me, the word
“mercy” came through loud and clear. In this beautiful house of
God, mercy is so generously and consistently dispensed.
It is not an accident (I think) that our 100th anniversary
celebration should coincide with the “Jubilee Year of Mercy” as
proclaimed by Pope Francis. On December 8, 2015, the entire
Catholic Church is invited to celebrate the gift of God’s mercy
and our imitation of that mercy in our day-to-day living. In his
official announcement proclaiming this Jubilee Year, our Pope Francis writes, “Mercy is the very
foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she
makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in
mercy. The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.”
(Misericordiae Vultus, 10).
I believe that our beautiful Church offers a tremendous witness to God’s mercy, and one can say that
“for the love of mercy” is the motivation of certain practices that are unique to our beautiful Church. In
no other Church in the diocese (do I know of) does the distribution of food baskets at Thanksgiving and
Christmas take place in the Church itself. It is as if the merciful tenderness of our God, given to us in
the Eucharistic celebration, now becomes visibly tangible for the poor and needy as we feed them in
the house of God, the house of mercy. I would also contend that no other Church in the diocese has the
number of hours of confession available during the week as we do. In those hours after the 12:10 Mass,
people from all over come to Saint Brigid’s to seek out the healing loving mercy of God dispensed
through that sacrament.
Another unique attribute of our Church is its proximity to Holy Rood Cemetery. Countless times I have
heard from people outside our parish tell me that they often pay a visit to Saint Brigid’s after having
visited the cemetery at Holy Rood. I would like to think that our Church offers a place of comfort for
those who mourn, where the tender compassion of our God mercifully caresses the souls of those who
are in need. In our beautiful Church they feel a real connection with their loved ones whose remains are
buried a few hundred yards away. In addition, our Church offers the Mass of Christian burial for people
who are being buried in Holy Rood who otherwise do not have a nearby parish of affiliation where the
Mass can be celebrated. We are reminded that “burying the dead” is a corporal work of mercy.
In his declaration of the year of Mercy, Pope Francis writes, “It is my burning desire that, during this
Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy” During our
jubilee celebration of Saint Brigid Church during this year of mercy, I wish to offer opportunities for us
as a parish both to celebrate the past, the unique acts of mercy that have taken place in Saint Brigid’s,
as well as to direct our hearts concerning the ways in which we, as a community, can be further
energized in reflecting the heart of mercy for many years to come.
18
“For the Love of Mercy” motivates what we do here at Saint Brigid Church. For the love of mercy is
what brings people together in Eucharistic worship to receive the Father’s love made flesh in Jesus. For
the love of mercy will continue to guide the programs and the resources of our parish now and into the
future. For the love of mercy truly is our mission statement!

- Padre Tony
