What was happening in the Fourth
Century?
Of the many pilgrims who heard Ambrose preach in Milan, one
was a woman named Monica. She was so impressed with
Ambrose’s preaching that she could not stop talking about him to
her son Augus ne, who against her wishes had le the church and
was living an immoral lifestyle.
Monica gave birth to a son in 354 in the city of Thagaste in North
Africa, now Algeria, and named him Aurelius Augus nius. She was
a pious woman and the child was raised as a Catholic, although
not bap zed as a child. The family was of the aristocra c class,
and could afford a good educa on for their child. Augus ne was
sent to a private school about 20 miles away from his home at age
eleven, where he studied La n Literature, and the Pagan
Philosophers. At age 17, his educa on con nued in Carthage
where he completed advanced studies in rhetoric and philosophy.
A er comple ng his educa on, Augus ne became a teacher of
rhetoric, first in Thagaste, then in Carthage, and in 384 accepted a
posi on in Milan.
Augus ne’s friends were a rowdy bunch and under their influence
he fell into a dissolute lifestyle. It was during this me that
Augus ne prayed his famous prayer “Lord, make me chaste, but
not yet,” which he later recorded in his biography The
Confessions. At 19 Augus ne met a young woman in Carthage to
whom he was greatly a racted. Together they had a son, named
Adeodatus. Augus ne’s mother, Monica, did not approve of this
woman, and refused to give permission for them to marry.
Augus ne remained in this rela onship for fi een years, but, at
the insistence of his parents, le her to enter into an arranged
marriage contract with a person of more noble birth. He writes in
The Confessions, that his heart was torn apart by leaving his
mistress. The bride chosen for him was only ten years old. They
could not actually marry un l the girl had reached the legal age
for marriage in Rome, which was twelve. The marriage never took
place. By the me she was old enough, Augus ne had changed his
life, taken a vow of celibacy, and was preparing to enter the
priesthood.
As a young man, Augus ne rejected Chris anity and became
involved in Manichaeism, a dualist theology which had existed
since the second century. This also was distressing to Monica,
who prayed with fervor and tears for her son’s conversion.
Eventually, Augus ne became disenchanted with Manichaeism
and moved more toward philosophical systems, par cularly
Neoplatonism, which would later become an influence on
Augus ne’s Chris an theology. On an academic level, Augus ne
had already become friends with Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, but
was not a ending Chris an worship. At the urging of his mother,
and a friend, Augus ne went to hear Ambrose preach. The
powerful and eloquent sermon impressed Augus ne, and le him
with much to contemplate. He returned repeatedly to hear the
great Ambrose speak.
In 386, Augus ne converted to Chris anity. He writes in The
Confessions, that he heard the voice of a child singing, “take up
and read, take up and read.” Augus ne understood this as a
command from God to take up the Bible and read whatever
passage opened to him. The verse to which Augus ne randomly
opened his Bible happened to be Paul’s Le er to the Romans,
13:13-14, “Not in rio ng and drunkenness, not in chambering and
wantonness, not in strife and envying, but put on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill the lusts
thereof.” Shortly a er that experience, Augus ne was bap zed by
Ambrose.
Augus ne went on to become one of the greatest theologians of
Chris anity, s ll revered by Catholics, Lutherans and the
Calvinis c Churches of the Reforma on. He wrote in opposi on to
the heresy of Nestorianism which ques oned the dual nature of
Christ, composed a long trea se on the Trinity, developed the
theology of Original Sin, and wrote hundreds of sermons in
addi on to his autobiography, The Confessions.
A year a er Augus ne’s bap sm, his mother Monica, who would
also be venerated as a saint, died in peace, her fervent prayers
for her son’s conversion having been answered.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Imagina: ¡tres celebraciones de Año

mes!, al final de noviembre, con el
Adviento empezó el Nuevo Año Litúrgico;

mencionar nuestros propios problemas
personales, ¡qué tanto nuestro mundo
necesita a Jesús como otro Nuevo Año
empieza cubierto de misterio! Al orar por
