ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH
Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ
King of the universe
FROM THE PASTOR’S HAND
Greetings in the Lord and Happy Feast Day!
Today we in the Universal Church honor the Lord with the title “Christ the
King.” For you and me, having domicile in the local Church of NorthGeorgia, today’s feast is of particular importance because our Cathedral –
the mother church of our archdiocese – is named “Christ the King.” Today
is the last (crowning, if you will) Sunday of the entire Liturgical Year; for
next Sunday begins a new liturgical year with the Season of Advent.
It is apropos to recall that Advent is a four-week season of preparation for
Christ the King’s Second Coming! Hence, Advent is a penitential season (NB:
violet vestments are worn), designed to get our attention and invite us to get
our lives and our hearts in order, prepared for the end of times when Christ
will return in all His glory!
Do try and stay focused on this (despite secular-christmas bombarding us
too early), as you make preparations of hearth and home for the coming
religious Christmas Season that begins Dec 25 (and will last through Jan
10). Then, and not until then, we will sweetly recall Jesus’ First Coming at
Bethlehem two millennia ago. Advent is preparation for his Second Coming;
Christmas is remembering his First.
Back to today, though…traditionally this is the day parishes across the globe
celebrate the “Rite of Welcome and Acceptance” for those journeying toward
one-ness with us as Catholic Christians. We at St. Lawrence will celebrate
this ancient Rite at our 7pm Vigil and 10am Morning Masses, when the non
-baptized are welcomed as Catechumens in preparation for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist; and those already baptized in other denominations are
accepted as Candidates for Confirmation and Eucharist.
I invite you to remember that, as these Catechumens and Candidates journey toward the Easter Sacraments of Initiation, you and I are to also journey: in prayerful support for them…and in personal recommitment to our
own life in Christ, the King. Whether it is Ordinary Time, Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter…we are always journeying in faith, with one another,
and together in Christ! Enter into the journey with purpose; make it worthwhile and fruitful for you and your household.

MASS INTENTIONS
How should we revere our Lord and King? We, as good stewards,
fully acknowledge the true presence of the Body and Blood of
Christ in the Eucharist and strive to receive Him during Mass in a
prayerful and reverent manner. We also understand that through
the Eucharist we are nourished and strengthened to serve the
Lord as He has planned for us. What do we bring of our time, talent, and treasure to the Eucharistic table?

To the St. Lawrence Parish Family
The St. Lawrence Parish Finance Council is pleased to report the financial results for
the first quarter of the fiscal year July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.
We have had a very good start to the fiscal year. Offertory is over budget and well
ahead of last year. Thank you for your outstanding generosity. Also, thank you for
converting to electronic giving. It has made a big difference! Save yourself time and
stress by signing up for electronic giving on the St. Lawrence website
http://www.saintlaw.org/ or contact Janet Volion in the office. This year has started
out with more children in the Religious Ed and Preschool programs, a big turnaround
from the past few years. Your pledge payments to this year’s Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal have again exceeded our Archdiocesan target. We met the target a month
earlier than last year. This year’s refund to date is over $13,000 more than last year’s
refund for the same period. The garage sale generated just under $14,000 which is
down $7,000 from last year. Finally, the debt reduction collection applied to date
shortens our mortgage another three months and saved us over $9,500 in interest.
Regarding the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, please keep up your great efforts to
complete your pledge commitment by the end of December. If you have any questions/concerns about your pledge/payments or did not receive pledge reminders,
please contact Janet Volion in the parish office. Remember that every dollar paid
between now and December 31 is returned to St. Lawrence and does not go the Archdiocese.
Overall, expenses are tracking slightly under budget, which is not unusual for the first
quarter. Most parish activities are ramping up from the summer, which makes it
difficult to accurately budget which month certain expenses will actually occur.

For example, approximately $45,000 in facilities repairs and maintenance did not take
place as planned, resulting in a favorable variance.
Speaking of repairs, you may have noticed some problems with the wooden beams in
and near the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Inspections have determined that we have
some serious water and insect damage that will require extensive repairs to fix. Also
the narthex windows have suffered serious rotting and need replacement. These problems can be traced back to when the Church was built in the 1980’s. These repairs are
not included in the budget. Preliminary estimates for repairs are in the range of
$60,000 to $100,000 for the beams, $30,000 to $40,000 for the windows and $5,000 to
$10,000 to permanently fix the water drainage issue near the beams. These repairs will
consume most if not all our Capital Reserve Fund which will delay other scheduled
capital improvement items. Please be on the lookout for news regarding a special
collection to cover these expenses.
Having just completed our annual stewardship renewal period, our financial results
reflect the treasure and time components of Time, Talent and Treasure. It is important
to note that our expenses reflect the time and talent components in that we have volunteers performing many parish activities including reception, sacristans, registration, and
faith formation that we would otherwise have to hire staff to perform. We thank our
volunteers for their contribution of time and talents, an invaluable gift that makes St.
Lawrence special.
Again, thank you for your support of St. Lawrence. If you have any questions please
let me know.

tiempo Ordinario, Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma o Pascua...
