MARCH 1, 2015 - SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
1 DE MARZO, 2015 - SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Christ the King Mission Statement
We are a parish of Disciples, guided by the Holy Spirit and strengthened by the Eucharist.
We live the mission of Jesus Christ in our love and service to others.
Lent is a journey. Where will it take you this year?
THE Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl is your
passport to global solidarity.
Forty years ago, Catholics in the United States wanted to
respond to famine in Africa. Could we feed the hungry
through Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving? The
answer was yes — and it came in the form of a small
cardboard box. Forty years later, it still does.

From our Pastor...
A Lenten Interview with Sister Mary Beata, PVMI
1) Are there any special practices that the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate
observe during Lent?
Besides the Lenten practices that are prescribed by the Church--prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving-- the Sisters of the PVMI try to intensify their spirit of keeping
their rule of life, self-denial, a deeper spirit of recollection and silence, and a
deeper prayer life. “Cheerfulness” in the midst of any trials was highly
recommended by our Foundress.
2) What advice did your foundress, Mother Mary Teresa Tallon, give to your community about fasting?
Mother Mary Teresa Tallon said the most important fast is “fasting from all vices”! She said for us not to
do any drastic fasting, for physical strength is needed to go about our duties as missionaries. One can
fast from food by “eating less of the foods you like, and a little more of those you dislike.” She
emphasized that the real spirit of fasting is mortification and self-denial.
3) Are there any extra prayers that you say as a community, or do you choose individually?
Mother Foundress passed on to us her love of and devotion to the “Passion of Jesus Christ
Crucified.” She recommended that we meditate on the Scriptures and the Rosary and pray the Way of
the Cross. The Sisters in the Motherhouse have communal Stations of the Cross on Fridays, and the local
communities of Sisters participate in the Stations of the Cross in the parishes they serve, or privately. Of
course each Sister makes her own individual extra prayer that will bring her into a deeper love of her
Divine Spouse Jesus Christ, besides her daily half-hour meditation, Holy Hour of Adoration, rosary, Holy
Mass, scripture reading and Liturgy of the Hours.
4) Is it possible to give alms when you have taken a vow of poverty? Are there other types of "alms"
that you can give, to help those who are in need?
Making a vow of poverty means we possess nothing individually of material goods. However, the whole
community, including all the local communities, saves money on food by following a simple meal plan
every Wednesday and Friday, all year. On Holy Thursday we put the money saved together to help a
particular charity each year. We also help needs outside our area, even worldwide, when crises occur,
such as helping the victims of Katrina and the victims of last year’s typhoon in the Philippines. The other
types of “alms” are the Spiritual Works of Mercy--in any time and in any place!
5) What advice can you give to our parishioners to help them enter into this time of Lent?
The season of Lent is a time set apart by the Church to bring the truth about God’s infinite and
unfathomable love for us. I pray that we renew our commitment daily in following Jesus, even if it costs
us in pain and persecution. Our society needs real witnesses of Christ. Our yearly observances of Lent,
especially this year’s, could well have as our resolution, “All for Jesus.”
In Christ,
Pastor

Shawl Ministry Yarn Donations
The Prayer Shawl Ministry needs yarn
donations (non-wool). 4 skeins (bundles)
or one pound of yarn will make one shawl.
Yarn donations can be in any color. Your thoughtful
donations will allow the ladies who faithfully dedicate
their time each week to continue to knit and crochet
the beautiful prayer shawls. Yarn donations can be
dropped off in the Parish Office or the Shrine.
Perpetual Adoration
Facilitator of Marriage Ministry Job Opening
“It is God who, in his good will toward you, begets in
you any measure of desire or achievement.”
Philippians 2:12
Do you have a dream list… ‘If only I had the
time, I would…?’ Is one of those dreams to
dedicate an hour weekly in Adoration
before the Blessed Sacrament? Maybe this
lent is the time to make that dream come
true.
Look at www.cancershrine.org/adoration
and click on the ‘Colored Faces’ link to see
when you can help at the St Peregrine Shrine, or check
the ‘Faces Chart’ as you enter the Church or Shrine then
call (602) 300-8562 and ask for Dick, or fill out a buff
colored Invitation Card and leave it at the Welcome
Center or Office. You are welcomed to adore any hour.
Please register, and get an Adorers Pamphlet.
Christ the King has an opening for a part-time, bi-lingual,
Facilitator of Marriage Ministry to assist the parish priests
by “taking care that those who seek the sacraments are
prepared to receive them by proper evangelization and
catechetical instruction” (CIC, 843).

Altar Linens
Do you have time in your life to occasionally wash &
iron altar linens? (These are the 17x12 inch
purificators used at communion) They need to be
picked up Monday, washed, dried, ironed and returned
to the church Tuesday or Wednesday. We alternate
weeks and can trade weeks if your assigned date is not
convenient for you. If we had several more volunteers
signed up, each person might be doing this 3 or 4 times
a year. Prayerfully consider donating time to our Lord.
Call Bernie King at (480) 396-5454 or (602) 432-8212.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all
things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of
sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
John Michael Talbot ©1982 Birdwing Music
I am the Bread of Life. All who eat this Bread will never die.
I am God's love revealed. I am broken that you might be healed.
All who eat of this heavenly Bread; All who drink this cup of the covenant.
You will live forever for I will raise you up.
No one who comes to Me shall ever hunger again.
No one who believes shall ever thirst.
All that the Father draws shall come to Me; And I will give them rest.
YOU ARE MY KING (AMAZING LOVE)
Billy James Foote © 1997 worshiptogether.com
I’m forgiven because you were forsaken.
I’m accepted, you were condemned.
I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because you died and rose again.
Amazing love, how can it be that You, my King, would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true; it’s my joy to honor you.
In all I do, I honor You.
You are my King, Jesus, You are my King,
You are my King, Jesus, You are my King.
SACRED SILENCE
Tom Booth, Jenny Pixler ©2003 spiritandsong.com
Sacred silence, holy ocean, gentle water, washing over me;
Help me listen, Holy Spirit. Come and speak to me.
God my Father, Christ my brother, Holy Spirit, sanctifying me;
Lord I’m sorry, please forgive me. Come and set me free.
Holy Mary, gentle mother, God’s pure vessel, praying for me;
Saints and angels, all in heaven, come and be with me.
(last time)
Come and be with me. Come and speak to me.
IN CHRIST ALONE
Keith Getty, Stuart Townend © 2001 Thankyou Music (Admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing)
In Christ alone, my hope is found, He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love, and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross, as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin, on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live

Nosotros alternamos
