MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist says, “Whoever has two cloaks should
share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.
Christmas is a time of love and gift giving. . .please share your
abundance by your contributions to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so
that those who do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings
of Christmas. Christmas is also a time to reflect on the goodness of
the Lord and to think about what you can do with your talents to
help bring joy to another.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Let us prepare to celebrate Christmas by inviting Jesus into
your heart and soul. “God so loved the world that He gave His onlybegotten Son.” Embrace and receive God’s love by accepting Jesus
Christ into your life.
The Holy Year of Mercy commences with the feast of the Immaculate
Conception, December 8, 2015 and ends on the feast of Christ the
King, November 20, 2016. Pope Francis has announced that he wants
the church to live the Gospel as Jesus invites us to: “Be merciful just
as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36). What a truly beautiful way to
honor Christ through a conversion of our spirit as witnesses for him as
we enter a new year and the opportunity for our merciful rebirth. Therefore,
prepare your soul for the Prince of Peace to enter into your life with
confession, prayer and fasting.
Christ Jesus wants to bless us on His Birthday with the peace of the
Angels proclaimed, but first we must make peace with ourselves, then
peace with our family and friends, parishioners and neighbors, thus
making room for the Prince of Peace to enter and dwell within us.
Reflect on the words of Christ in your rebirth, “So be perfect, just as
your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). We become perfect
by having Jesus in our lives.
Christmas is a special gift for you from Jesus Christ. Prepare for it,
cherish it, and carry it gently for it is fragile. Love his gift boldly, for it
is the power of God in you. My wish for you is that the love, mercy and
peace of God may come into your hearts and homes on Christmas day
and abide with you and your families throughout the coming year.

Mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Preparémonos para celebrar esta navidad invitando a Jesús en
nuestro corazón y en nuestra alma. "Dios amo tanto al mundo que
entregó a su Unigénito". Abraza y recibe el amor de Dios aceptando a
Jesucristo en tu vida.
El Año Santo de la Misericordia comienza con la festividad de la
Inmaculada Concepción, el 8 de Diciembre de 2015, y termina con la
fiesta de Cristo Rey el 20 de Noviembre de 2016. El Papa Francisco
ha anunciado que quiere que la Iglesia viva el evangelio a través de
las palabras de Jesús: "Sean misericordiosos como es misericordiosos
el Padre de ustedes". (Lucas 6:36). Que hermoso sería que al empezar
este Año Nuevo podamos darle el honor y la gloria a Cristo por medio
de nuestra conversión, dando testimonio de la misericordia de Dios. Por lo
tanto, prepara tu alma con la confesión, oración y ayuno para que el
Príncipe de la Paz entre a reinar en tu vida.
Cristo Jesús quiere bendecirnos en su cumpleaños con la paz que los
ángeles proclamaron, pero antes debemos hacer la paz con nosotros
mismos, con nuestra familia y amigos, nuestra comunidad parroquial
y vecinos, para así dar lugar a que el Príncipe de la Paz habite en
nosotros. En este renacimiento reflexiona en las palabras de Cristo:
"Sean perfectos como es perfecto el Padre de ustedes que está en
el Cielo" (Mateo 5:48). Somos perfectos teniendo a Jesús en nuestras
vidas.
La Navidad es un regalo muy especial de Jesucristo para ti. Prepárate
para recibirlo, disfrútalo y tómalo con cuidado porque es frágil. Ama su
regalo audazmente, pues es la fuerza de Dios en ti. Mi deseo para
ustedes es que el amor, la misericordia, y la paz lleguen a sus corazones
y a sus hogares, y permanezcan con ustedes y sus familias durante
todo el año que viene.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY—AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA
Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the Jubilee Year of Mercy last Tuesday
because December 8 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the
closing of Vatican II. That council, Pope Francis reminds us,
inaugurated a new phase in the Church’s history. The Spirit
called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had
made it a fortress, and to proclaim the gospel in a new, more accessible
way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declaring the Church’s
preference for “the medicine of mercy,” and Blessed Paul VI in proposing
the Good Samaritan as our model for discipleship (Misericordiae
Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that God’s mercy is “the beating heart
of the Gospel,” and that mercy “must penetrate the heart and mind” of
every disciple (MV, 12). Three times today’s Gospel asks, “What
should I do?” Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not
wielding the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had
threatened, but instead imparting healing, compassion,
forgiveness—mercy!

Tercer Domingo de Adviento
El Papa Francisco eligió inaugurar el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia el
pasado martes porque el 8 de diciembre marca el quincuagésimo
aniversario de la clausura del Concilio Vaticano II. El Papa
Francisco nos recuerda que el Concilio inauguró una fase en la
historia de la Iglesia. El Espíritu llamó a la Iglesia a derrumbar
muros que la habían hecho una fortaleza por mucho tiempo, y a proclamar
el Evangelio en un modo nuevo y más accesible. El Papa Francisco cita a
san Juan XXIII declarando la “preferencia por la medicina de la misericordia”
de la Iglesia, y al beato Pablo VI proponiendo “al Buen Samaritano
como niestro modelo de discipulado” (Misericordiae Vultus, 4). El
Papa Francisco añade: “la misericordia de Dios es el corazón palpitante
del Evangelio” y que esa misericordia debe alcanzar la mente y el corazón”
de cada discípulo (MV, 12). En el Evangelio de hoy, tres veces se
pregunta “¿Qué tenemos que hacer?” El Papa Francisco
diría: Imita a Jesús, quien vino no empuñando el juicio de
fuego que Juan el Bautista anunciaba, sino en su lugar
sanando, siendo compasivo, perdonando —¡misericordia!

It is our custom at St. Lawrence to decorate the church with
poinsettias for Christmas liturgies. If you would like to remember a
loved one who has died or honor someone special, come to the
table after Mass to request a poinsettia in their name. We will be
available after all Masses during the first two Weeks of Advent. Donation
is $10. Monies collected will be used to purchase 50 poinsettias and
other liturgical articles. Thank you for your support.

Es nuestra costumbre en San Lorenzo decorar la Iglesia con
Nochebuenas para la liturgía de Navidad. Si te gustaría recordar a un ser
querido fallecido u honrar a alguien especial, ven a la mesa después
de las Misas para ordenar una nochebuena en su nombre. Estaremos disponibles después de las Misas los dos primeros fines de semana

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
This week, our celebration of Advent
makes a transition in ritual and texts.
Beginning December 18, the countdown of
nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees a
heightened sense of expectation, and also
a turning from the call of the Baptist in the
wilderness to the events leading up to
Jesus’ birth. In ancient Spain, December
18 was once celebrated as the “Feast of
the Expectancy,” and customs grew up to
heighten readiness in the homes.
Some customs arise from monastic life
and practice and spill over into our parish
life. Beginning tonight, those who pray
Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a
beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong
to a collection of opening phrases called
the “O Antiphons” after the awe-inspired
“O” sung on the first note. There’s a playful
code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O
Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn,
O Ruler, O Emmanuel. When you take
their Latin names—Sapientia, Adonai,
Radix, and so on—the titles form an acrostic
when you read them backwards: “ERO
CRAS.” In Latin, that is translated as “I will
be there tomorrow!” It’s as if Christ were
answering the prayers of the waiting people in
the words of the prayers themselves.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Los cristianos latinos tenemos unos
cinco siglos en nuestra trayectoria de fe y
como todo cristiano aguardamos la segunda
venida del Mesías, Jesús. Nuestra espera
forma parte de dos milenios de cristianos
que buscan verlo llegar en las nubes.
Desde el siglo VII la oración oficial de la
Iglesia clama el retorno de Cristo con las
exclamaciones llamadas las “Antífonas
Oh”. Estas llaman a Jesús pidiéndole
que venga bajo los títulos de Emmanuel,
Sabiduría celestial, Señor de gran poder,
Vara de Isaí, Llave de David, Alba de la
luz, y Deseo y Rey de gentes, y algunos
más. Estos refranes se usan aún todavía
hoy durante los días 17 al 23 de diciembre,
y unidas en un acróstico latino forman las
palabras ero cras (estaré mañana), como
respuesta a la petición cristiana. Eventualmente en el siglo X o XI estas antífonas
fueron unidas en el canto gregoriano Veni,
veni Emmanuel (Oh ven, oh ven Emmanuel).
Este Adviento mientras cantamos las
antiguas antífonas hay que preguntarnos
si de veras estamos listos para el regreso
del Hijo del Hombre que viene para juzgar
a vivos y muertos.
