Anointing: Anytime upon request in the home of the sick.
Communion: A Priest, Deacon or Eucharistic Minister of
the parish will bring Holy Communion to those
parishioners confined to home. Please notify the
Rectory when someone is ill or admitted to the hospital.

A Word from the Pastor …
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today the Catholic Church celebrates World Mission Sunday. Many of us remember with great nostalgia our younger
days, when we would be visited in our schools and our churches by missionary priests and nuns working in “mission
lands.” They would recount stories about working among the poor in Africa and in other distant lands, and tell us how
the few pennies that we, as kids, were contributing were helping dig wells, feed poor children, sustain orphanages, etc.
in far-off lands.
Personally speaking, the witness of so many missionaries whom I have had the privilege of knowing over the years, contributed greatly to my responding to a missionary call. But, in essence, what does World Mission Sunday seek to underscore? The fact that ALL the Church is missionary. It is also seeks to help us understand what should be the main
thrust of the Church’s mission. In his message for the 2011 World Mission Sunday, Pope [now Emeritus] Benedict
XVI observed:
[The proclamation of the Gospel] is the most precious service that the Church can render to humanity and to
all individuals who are seeking the profound reasons to live their life to the full. This same invitation therefore resonates every year during the celebration of World Mission Day. Continuous proclamation of the Gospel, in fact, also invigorates the Church, her fervor and her apostolic spirit. It renews her pastoral methods so
that they may be ever better suited to the new situations — even those which require a new evangelization —
and enlivened by missionary zeal: "missionary activity renews the Church, revitalizes faith and Christian
identity, and offers fresh enthusiasm and new incentive. Faith is strengthened when it is given to others! It is
in commitment to the Church's universal mission that the new evangelization of Christian peoples will find
inspiration and support" (St. John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, n. 2).
I think it is very fitting that today, Pope Paul VI, who served the Church as Supreme Pontiff from 1963 to 1978, will be
beatified in Rome by Pope Francis. He boldly proclaimed the Gospel of Christ, even to the point of being misunderstood and criticized by people inside the Church. Yet he also underscored, especially through his Encyclical from 1967,
Populorum Progressio, the full development of the human being, or, as he called it, “A Full-Bodied Humanism” that
brings about “the fulfillment of the whole man and of every man:”
True humanism points the way toward God and acknowledges the task to which we are called, the task
which offers us the real meaning of human life. Man is not the ultimate measure of man. Man becomes truly
man only by passing beyond himself. In the words of Pascal: "Man infinitely surpasses man" [PP 42].
In that spirit, a Second Collection will be taken today to assist the work of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
These monies will be used to educate seminarians in mission territories, keep hospitals, shelters and orphanages running
in places where the Church is called to be the compassionate and healing Hand of Christ. This year, a special emphasis
is being placed on the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church. A tremendous growth in the Faith
there has been noticed during the past few years, also thanks to those who contribute through their means.
The Lord reminds us that there is more joy in giving than in receiving. Just think how your life would be if you had
never met the love of Jesus Christ!

P.S. At some of the Masses today, you will notice the presence of a video production crew filming parts of these
Masses. Some of this footage will appear in the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal video (that will be shown at
every parish in the Archdiocese of Newark in January). The producer assured me that the filming will be done in
as discreet as way as possible, in order not to distract our sacred liturgies. We welcome the production crew to St.
Peter’s, as they highlight the beauty and vibrancy of our parish, which continues to be a beacon of hope especially
for newcomers and those who are struggling.

Christ. For this reason,
the mission ad gentes
continues to be most
urgent. All the members of the Church are
called to participate in
this mission, for the
Church is missionary
by her very nature: she was born “to go out.”
The Evangelist tells us that the Lord sent the seventy-two disciples two by two into cities and villages to
proclaim that the Kingdom of God was near, and to prepare people to meet Jesus After carrying out this mission
of preaching, the disciples returned full of joy: joy is a
dominant theme of this first and unforgettable missionary experi-ence. Yet the divine Master told them: “Do
not rejoice because the demons are subject to you; but
rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment
when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer
and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the
young Churches in mission lands.
World Mission Sunday is a celebration of grace and joy.
All the Lord’s disciples are called to nurture the joy of
evangelization.
World Mission Sunday is also an occasion to rekindle the desire and the moral obligation to take joyful
part in the mission ad gentes. A monetary contribution
on the part of individuals is
the sign of a self-offering, first to the Lord and then to
others; in this way a material offering can become a
means for the evangelization of humanity built on love.
World Mission Sunday is an invitation to immerse yourself in the joy of the Gospel and nurture a love
that can light up your vocation and your mission.
Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Mission
Sunday my thoughts turn to all the local Churches. Let
us not be robbed of the joy of evangelization!

Pope Francis at General Audience:
The final destination of the People of God
The final destination of the People of God was the theme of Pope Francis' catechesis during this Wednesday's General Audience. The Holy Father began by recalling St. Paul's words to the Thessalonians, when with anxiety they asked what would become of them – “we will be with the Lord forever” – remarking that it was one of the
most beautiful phrases of the Sacred Scripture, and inviting those present in St. Peter's Square to repeat it three
times.
He went on to comment on how, in the Book of Revelation St. John, returning to the intuition of the
Prophets, describes the final and definitive dimension in terms of “a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven
from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” And this, then, is who the Church is: she is the People of
God, following the Lord Jesus, preparing Herself, day by day, for the encounter with Him, like a bride with her
groom. And it is not simply a turn of phrase: it will be a true espousal (marriage). Yes, because Christ, who made
Himself man like us, and making us one with Him, by His death and resurrection, truly took us as His spouse. And
this is none other than the fulfillment of the plan of communion and love, woven by God throughout history, the
history of the People of God and the history of each one of us.”
There is another element that further consoles us and opens our heart: John says that in the Church, Bride
of Christ, the “New Jerusalem” is visible. This means that the Church, aside from being a bride, is called to become a city, the quintessential symbol of co-existence and human relations. How beautiful it is to already be able
to contemplate, according to another evocative image from Revelation, all the peoples and populations gathered
together in this city, as if they were all under the same roof, in God's home. And in this glorious setting there will
be no more isolation, abuse or distinctions of any type – social, ethnic or religious – but we will all be one in
Christ.”
“In the presence of this unprecedented and wonderful scene, hope cannot but be strongly confirmed in
our heart,” he added, since “Christian hope is not simply a wish, a hope; for a Christian, hope is awaiting, fervently
and with passion, the final and definitive fulfillment of a mystery, the mystery of God's love, in which we are reborn and which we already live. And it is the expectation of someone who is about to arrive: the Lord Christ who
is ever closer to us, day after day, and who comes to finally introduce us to the fullness of His communion and His
peace.” Pope Francis underlined that the Church therefore has “the task of keeping hope alight and clearly visible,
so that it may continue to shine as a sure sign of salvation and may illuminate for all humanity the path that leads
to the encounter with the mysterious face of God.”
Synod on the Family: Bishops stress Monday's Synod report is
"work in progress"
The mid-term report, issued by bishops at the Synod is a “work in progress” and not a definitive document
of Church teaching on family life. That was the message underlined by two Synod Fathers (Cardinals Filoni and
Napier) joining the head of the Holy See press office, Fr Federico Lombardi and his assistants, at the daily briefing
for journalists on Tuesday.
The half-way report, presented at the Synod’s General Congregation on Monday morning, reflects the rich
and often heated debate that has taken place inside the Synod Hall over the past week. But clearly not all the bishops attending the two week meeting are happy with its style or its content. Some believe Church teachings are confused and presented out of context. Others are concerned with the way the media has presented it more as a definitive statement than a working document, that still needs to be reworked and voted on at the end of this week. And
even that isn’t the end of the story, because the final statement from this Synod will then be revisited over the coming year and form the basis for the broader gathering that Pope Francis has called for in October 2015.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . .
The school year is well underway. Last week
our students received their first progress reports. The
schools in the Archdiocese utilize a grading program
called PowerSchool. This year St. Peter School is
opening a “Parent Portal” in grades four through
eight. Parents will be able to view their child’s grades
online throughout the year. It is another way to keep
the parents informed.
Two of our teachers, Mr. Sagarese and Mrs.
Bartels, will again be participating in the Gilder
Lehrman Institute of American History ‘s Teaching
Literacy through History Professional Development
Program. This year the focus will be on World War I,
The Great Depression and The United States.
On Friday our faculty attended the Opening
Schools Mass at the Cathedral Basilica. Every year the
schools in the Archdiocese are invited to celebrate
the new school year and Catholic School educators.
St. Peter's School will hold its annual Tricky Tray on
Thursday November 20 at The Chandelier, Belleville. The school is now accepting donations including
empty and/or completed baskets, cash donations, gift
