We are excited about a new opportunity offered at all Janesville middle schools.
This year each middle school will join the high school's efforts to make schools
safer, more welcoming and more just for all students by starting a GSA (Gay
Straight Alliance). Continuing with our focus on RESPECT, informational meetings are scheduled this month for students to learn about how they can participate
if interested.

“I firmly believe that respect is a lot more important,
and a lot greater, than popularity.”
- Julius Erving
For the month of October, Franklin Middle School will focus on Respect during Advisory and Character Education lessons. Activities will engage students in identifying ways in which to show respect to all and how to respond when dealing with behaviors that are not respectful. With October being National Bullying Prevention Month, we will also be participating in several
nationwide awareness events.
Unity Day on October 21st encourages individuals to recognize the importance of kindness, acceptance and inclusion by wearing orange.
Franklin Middle School will also be participating in Mix-It-Up-at-Lunch Day on Tuesday, October
27th. Students are encouraged to identify, question and cross social boundaries particularly in the lunchroom
where the divisions are most obvious.
New Club for 2015-2016: Middle School
Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA)
Franklin Middle School is committed to creating a safe environment for all students. We have worked hard to ensure your
child feels comfortable and ready to learn when they are at school, and to provide support and strategies in the event that an incident
of bullying or harassment should occur. It is our goal to continue to help students be proactive about their educational experience
and to tackle important issues such as bullying and harassment head-on. We want every one of our young people to have productive
and happy middle school years.
As you may be aware from incidents that have hit the news on both national and local levels, bullying can have a devastating effect on a child. Bullying occurs in many different ways, both physical and verbal. Studies have found that especially at the
middle school level, a great deal of the most hurtful bullying that occurs is with respect to sexual orientation. We are determined to
address this issue at Franklin. For this reason we have decided to provide a GSA club at our school. We join many other middle
schools in Wisconsin in providing this opportunity for students to become allies in ending bullying, harassment, and name calling
related to sexual orientation, race, disability, and other issues.
The data underscore the importance of stepping forward on behalf of safe schools for all our students, especially with respect to bullying and sexual orientation. For example:
Nearly three-fourths of surveyed Wisconsin youth report hearing “that’s so gay” frequently or often.
75% of surveyed Wisconsin youth say that it significantly bothers or distresses them when they hear “gay” used in a derogatory way.
25% of surveyed Wisconsin Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and/or Transgender (LGBT) youth have been physically harassed because of
their sexual orientation, 21% because of their gender expression (how they look).
Four out of five students who are harassed on account of perceived sexual orientation are heterosexual.
More data and information regarding bullying and LGBT youth is available at www.glsen.org. In addition, information about what a GSA looks like at the
middle school level is available by contacting Ms. Konstanz or Mrs. Clarquist.
This club will be introduced to students in the same way we introduce students to any new school club. Our planning meetings will occur in September with our first club meetings being held in late October or early November. You may want to discuss
with your child how she or he feels about having and being involved in a GSA at our school; I’d welcome talking with you about
this conversation if you would like to do so.
We understand the GSA is not for every child nor is it intended for every child. However, we also know from their own
stories that there are students at Franklin who need a place to go and talk, and that there also are other students who want to make
Franklin a more inclusive and safe environment and believe they can help achieve this goal by joining a GSA. We also believe that
students’ families should be involved and informed about what is going on at their child’s school and invite your support, questions
and/or concerns at any time.
Thank you for helping us ensure the safety and the educational opportunities for your child – and every child at Franklin
Middle School.

Welcome from PTSA
Welcome to the 2015-16 school year from Franklin's
PTSA (Parent-Teacher-Student Association). We are here to
provide support and activities to enrich the educational experience of ALL Franklin students.
We appreciate your support, whether it be in the form of
volunteer hours, baking at home, or simply joining PTSA and
supporting our budget with your dues. YOU can decide how
involved you would like to be. We understand "busy" and
know that you will help us in whatever way you can.
If you provided an email address on your membership
form, we will add you to a Franklin PTSA email list. We will
use this as the primary method of communication regarding
PTSA information. If you did not provide an email but would
still like to, please contact any of the officers with your information and we will add you to the list. If you did not provide
an email address but did provide a phone number, we will use
that as our method of communication if you signed up to help
out during the year. We do have a link on the Franklin homepage, so that is another way to keep up with current PTSA
events. Please like Franklin PTSA on Facebook to be kept informed. You can also follow us on Twitter @Franklin_PTSA.
There are so many ways to stay in touch!
We meet on the 2nd Monday of each month except December (no meeting) at 4:00 pm in Room 105. We encourage
all PTSA members to attend meetings if they can, but it is not
a requirement of being a member. We also encourage any
Franklin Middle Students to attend our meetings and invite
them to contribute their thoughts and ideas. We are excited to
see and work with some of our Student Council representatives
this upcoming year! If we are going to be a PT"S"A, we really
want to include the "S." What a great opportunity for students
to learn responsibility and leadership skills!
You can join PTSA at any time during the school year, but
we hope you will consider joining now and supporting our
efforts. Membership forms are available in the main office.
Dues are $10.00 and will help support teachers' needs throughout the year to further our children's education!
Feel free to contact any of us at anytime! We look forward
to working with you and serving your children. Here's to a
great year with our wonderful Franklin staff, students, and
families!

policies related to Rec. Nights. They always have several paid Leisure Service staff members at Rec. Night,
and parent volunteers are always encouraged to help
out. Please contact Leisure Services if you would be
able to help out with any future Rec. Nights. The Leisure Service Staff always strives to contract one offduty Janesville Police Officer to be on duty; however,
this is not always possible.
If you send a check to cover the entry fee, please
make out the check to “Janesville Leisure Services.”
We do know that many of the problems that have

DROP OFF AND PICK UP SAFETY
from: Office Foster and Mr. Berg
The traffic in the front circle is one way the entire
day. During morning drop off, parents can pull up in the
lane closest to the school building. HOWEVER, the further (left) lane should be for moving traffic, so no one
can stop to wait or park there. Also, during these times,
parents are not allowed to drive through or park in the
side parking lot. In addition, please do not park in the
business parking lot across from the school on Mineral
Point Ave. This is a private lot for customers only. After
school, the front circle is closed from 2:30-3:30 p.m., for
bus pick-up. Make sure your family follows these critical
safety rules!! For a detailed map, please see the Parent/
Student Handbook Addendum or look on the Franklin
web page.
DISCIPLINE
Students are expected to abide by all established codes of conduct and board policies, as
outlined by the student handbook and as stated in
rules established by building principals for each
school.
All students must help to establish and maintain a safe and educationally conducive environment. When it becomes necessary to investigate
student misconduct, students have a duty to cooperate and answer questions truthfully and completely. Students who are dishonest, uncooperative, and/or are evasive will be subject to disciplinary action up to and/or including a recommendation for expulsion.
Franklin Middle School
PBIS School Rules
Franklin Middle School is a working and learning community for both students and staff. We expect everyone in the
building to know and follow these three basic rules:
BE SAFE. We will promote safety at all times and we will
prohibit individuals from engaging in unsafe actions. The
school expects students to listen to staff members and follow directions the first time they are given.
BE RESPECTFUL. We will promote respect at all times
and we will prohibit unkind words and actions. Unkind
words and actions include inappropriate language (foul,
abusive, harassing, insulting, vulgar, etc.) and physical aggression (hitting, pushing, shoving, kicking, slapping, etc.).
BE RESPONSIBLE. We will promote responsibility at all
times and we will prohibit irresponsible actions. The school
expects individuals to take care of their own property and to
show consideration for the belongings of others.
These three rules reinforce the school’s main expectation:
Teachers have the right to teach and students have the right
to learn in a safe, respectful, and responsible environment.
Students who are unwilling to follow our school rules will
receive logical and appropriate consequences in accordance
with school district policies, and local and state laws. Students can expect to see and hear the school rules reinforced
at all times in every area of the school. Teachers may also
have additional expectations for student behavior. Teachers
will explain their classroom expectations and the consequences for positive and negative behavior.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR!
Franklin Middle School will be holding our annual Fall Scholastic Book Fair during the
October 28th & 29th Parent/Teacher Conferences. The book fair will be held in the LMC, please

Community Learning Center
Franklin Middle School’s after-school program, CLC is a curriculum-based program designed to enhance student achievement
through project-based lessons. In the CLC Program, students will
receive daily assistance on homework, work to develop stronger
reading and math skills and complete weekly projects. The CLC
Program activities are community based which takes the learning
out of the traditional classroom and applies it to ‘real-life’ situations.
CLC meets from 3:23 - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
If you would like to sign-up your student for CLC, there are forms
available in the office. There is NO COST for this program but
your child is expected to be at CLC everyday.
If you should have any questions about our CLC program,
please contact Mrs. MacFarland-Johnson at 608-247-3500.
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND
October 2015
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Under the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001” federal law schools
receiving federal Title I funds are required to notify parents of their
right to ask for and receive information on the qualifications of
their child’s teacher(s). Specifically, you have the right to request
the following:
Whether your child’s teacher has met state qualification and
licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in
which he or she teaches.
Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under emergency or
other provisional status through which state qualification or
licensing criteria have been waived.
The baccalaureate degree major of your child’s teacher and
any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher.
Whether your child is provided services by instructional aides
and, if so, their qualifications.
All teachers in the School District of Janesville have a bachelor’s
degree and a large percentage have advanced degrees. In addition,
all instructional aides meet current school district qualification.
You can check on the state certification of your child’s teacher by
accessing the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website
(user name “view” password “1234567”) at http://
www.dpi.state.wi.us/dpi/slsis/tel/lisearch.html or by contacting us
at 743-6005.
Sincerely,
Dr. Charles Urness
Principal

CLOSING INFORMATION
Decisions about whether to cancel school are made in coordination with
both the Janesville Transit System and the Van Galder Bus Company as well
as the passage of city streets, safety of rural students and information from
the county highway department and city street department. The final decision to delay or close rests with the Superintendent. If school is not cancelled and families do not feel it is safe for their child to come to school, then
they should keep their children home. Families should remember to call in
the absence to the school.
The Superintendent will continue to have the option of delaying the start
of school by an hour. If this occurs, the School District will continue to have
special education, early childhood, and kindergarten classes. Elementary
School class will begin at 9:20 a.m. and middle and high school classes will
begin at 9:00 a.m. Universal Free Breakfast will be served on delayed start
days.
Infinite Campus will serve as our primary means of notification. We
urge you to supply your student's school with your contact information and
updates as changes occur. WCLO and additional radio and TV stations will
be contacted regarding school closings or delays. Closing and delay information will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m. In order to keep district lines
open for general operations we suggest parents not call the district for closing
information.
Our schools do not close early in an attempt to avoid incoming
snow or ice storms. This decision is to protect children who may get home
before their families and have no access or supervision at home. There also
will be no athletic contests and no practices on days school is called off for
weather reasons. The gyms will also be closed.
On days when school is in session but weather has progressively gotten
worse, cancellations for after school or evening athletics or extracurricular
activities will be announced by 2:00 p.m. on WCLO radio that day. Infinite
Campus will serve as our primary means of notification.
WEATHER - SEVERE WEATHER/TORNADO
Every precaution has been taken to protect students and staff members
during periods of severe weather. Students and staff are made aware of
predetermined areas of shelter to which they move during severe weather
warnings. During times of weather warnings, students will be kept in their
shelter areas beyond normal dismissal times and staff will remain with them.
For safety reasons students will not be released until either the National
Weather Service or local police or fire officials issue an “all clear” signal.
Children will not be released to families during the time of a weather
warning. Infinite Campus will serve as our primary means of notification to
let parents know when students will be released.

Child Find Notice
“The school district must locate, identify and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including
children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.” The
school district has a special education program to locate and screen all children with suspected disabilities who
are residents of the district and who have not graduated from high school. Upon request the school district will
screen any resident child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is
appropriate. A request may be made by contacting Barbara Kelley, Assistant Director of Student Services for the
School District of Janesville at 743-5061, or by writing her at 527 S. Franklin St., Janesville WI 53548.
Annually the district conducts developmental screening of preschool children. Each child’s motor, communication and social skills are observed at various play areas. Each child is weighed and measured, and the
child’s hearing and vision is checked. The information is used to provide the parent with a profile of their child’s
current development and to provide suggestions for follow up activities. Parents learn about community services
available to them and speak with representatives of agencies serving families. The information from screening is
also used to determine whether a child should be evaluated for a suspected disability. When school staff reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability, they refer the child for evaluation by a school district Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Developmental screening will be a part of the kindergarten screening this
Spring. Watch for dates at your local school.
A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to report the
child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral
must inform the child’s parents that the referral will be made. The referral must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child
with a disability may also refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A referral of a child residing in
the School District of Janesville may be sent to Barbara Kelley at the school district address above.”

however, siblings are generally assigned to the same school. In order for your kindergarten student to attend the same school as a sibling, you must submit a request during the Kindergarten Enrollment time frame.
If you know of a child in your neighborhood or from community activities that would be entering kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year, please
pass this enrollment information on.

Hello everyone, my name is Chantelle Mars. I will be the 7th grade Spanish teacher at Franklin Middle School. I am a recent graduate a
part time job while I am alsfrom UW-Whitewater and I am pursuing my master's in criminal justice at UW- Platteville. I work a full time
job and now a part time job while I am also very busy with my twin, four year-old boys. They just started P4J this year and I hope to be
involved as much as possible with their education as well as their activities outside of school. I hope to get to know everyone this year
and I am always open to advice since this is my first year of teaching!
¡Hola! My name is Julie Buckman. I am teaching 8th grade Spanish at Franklin Middle School as well as 7th and 8th grade Spanish at
Marshall Middle School this year. I have previously taught Spanish at Marshall, Franklin, Edison, Craig, and Parker. I am happy to be
spending part of my day at Franklin this year. Franklin is a great place to learn. Even as a teacher, I have learned a lot at Franklin in the
past. When I am not teaching I spend time with my son Carson, 9, and my daughter Carly, 12. I think this year will be a great year!
Hello everyone, my name is Christine Campbell. I will be working with Mr. Long as the Al-Pro paraprofessional. In March I moved to
Wisconsin from Mesa, Arizona so this will be my first winter here in Wisconsin. I worked in the Mesa Public School District for 8 years. I
have four children and four grandchildren. I am so grateful and thankful to be back working with children again. I believe this will be an
awesome year.
Hi, I am Julie Edwardson. I will be the new LMC paraprofessional here at Franklin Middle School. This will be my fourth year with the
School District of Janesville. My previous years were at Madison Elementary as an Instructional Aide and LMC paraprofessional. My husband, Lee, and I grew up in Janesville. Our boys, Chase and Andrew, currently attend Franklin Middle School. Our summers are spent in
Ontario, Canada, where we fish, swim, and enjoy the great outdoors. I am looking forward to working with everyone and becoming a part of
the Franklin Middle School Family! Please do not hesitate to contact me about anything. Let's have a fun year!
Hello, my name is Tanya Schaaf. I grew up here in Rock County and graduated from Parkview in 1997. I grew up showing horses,
trimming antlers off of our elk herd and working at my dad's lumber mill (I understand that Korleski Enterprises used to deliver to the
shop classes here?) I attended UW-Madison and graduated in 2001 with a degree in Human Ecology (home economics) where my foci
were Nutrition and Child & Family studies and I received a certificate in business. (I went for a practical route...because I still don't
know what I want to be when I grow up.) I worked a couple of summers doing this crazy job going door to door selling books with
Southwestern, one summer out by LA and the next by Raleigh, NC. Then I worked at an investment6 management firm in Madison.
Meanwhile, I started dating a guy who always caught my eye in HS, but we had never talked..(jock vs. nerd) but I am proud to call Ryan
Schaaf my husband of 13 years. Ryan was a Marine for 16 years, starting as enlisted working on helicopters, got put through college on a special program
called MECEP, became an officer and flew the '46s that he had worked on. We were stationed together in Pensacola, FL, Camp Pendleton, CA, and
Quantico, VA. Through that time I was blessed to be able to stay home with my kids; Anastasia (8) and Benjamin (5), my stepson David (16) when he
could visit, and recently, my nephew Alec (17) who moved in with us in January. Through all our travels we felt like there really was no place like home,
so when my husband was approved for early retirement, we came home to Wisconsin in the summer of 2014. Through I haven't worked for several
years I have spent come time volunteering with kids, mostly through our churches and my kids' schools. I am, excited to be here and to help with the
success of my team to ultimately help the kids be successful.
Hi, my name is Devin Yager and I am the new Transitions teacher at Franklin and Edison Middle Schools. I recently graduated from UWLa Crosse with a degree in Elementary Education. I also just moved to Monroe, WI where my boyfriend and I have a house. I am excited to
see where this new curriculum takes me and I am so glad to be a part of the School District of Janesville!
Hi, my name is Lauren Little. I am the new Band and Music Appreciation teacher here at Franklin Middle School. This is my first year teaching and I am excited to start my journey here in Janesville. My mom is also a music teacher in Brookfield, WI and both my aunt and uncle
teach for the School District of Janesville. I am looking forward to joining the team at Franklin Middle School!
Hi, my name is Nick Kliminski and I am excited to finally enter into my first year of professional teaching. My teaching development
began through coaching soccer and I also played four years of NCAA soccer. Graduating from UW-Whitewater this past spring, I have
also been highly involved with Janesville's International Education program development, including supporting its International Institute
as well as working with an elementary education conference in China. I look forward to the opportunity to work with Franklin Middle
School staff and students as I continue to gain experience as an educator.
Hi, my name is Tiffany Redieske. I have been teaching in the School District of Janesville for ten years. This is my first year at Franklin
Middle School and I am very excited to be a Franklin Falcon. I have two daughters, Lauren (8) and Anna (5), and as a family we enjoy being
outdoors, camping, going up north to the cabin, boating, water skiing, and geocaching.
Hi, my name is Carl Schenzel. I'm starting my 16th year for the School District of Janesville. I have been part of the Edison Leadership Committee for the last 15 years. I have been an active member of the Tier 1 PBIS Team for Edison from the implementation.
The last two years I have helped with the CLC after school program. During the summer I co-teach a four week summer school
course, MotorHead Tech, and an additional one week course (Vex Robotics Camp). I coached golf (Edison), basketball (Parker &
Edison), track (Edison), and I am the new gold coach here at Franklin. My wife, Rebecca, has been teaching Spanish at Edison for
the last 15 years. We have two children; Tanner (6 1/2) and Cooper (4). I enjoy coaching, fishing, and hunting. During our free time,
we enjoy traveling and visiting family. We recently added an in ground swimming pool in our backyard. I am looking forward to being a part of the Franklin Middle School staff.

Hi, my name is Jesse Ramirez. I am teaching 7th grade Math along with Reading and Communication Arts here at Franklin Middle School. I am a Parker High School graduate as well as a UW-Whitewater graduate and one of the Janesville
Multi-Cultural Teacher's Opportunities Scholarship recipients. I minored in music at UW-Whitewater and in my spare
time I love playing, writing, and recording music. I also love to eat at new restaurants and play disc golf. I am thrilled to
be teaching at Franklin and to be a part of the wonderful Falcon Nation.
Hi, my names is Katie Clarquist. I am the new Student Services Specialist aka School Counselor. I'm back home at
Franklin after a year and half leave. My previous position here was as a Special Ed Teacher with an emphasis on EBD
for eight years + a couple of months. I had also been a Special Ed Teacher at another district for seven years prior to
that. I left Franklin as I was completing my Masters of School Counseling to work as a Student Services Specialist for
Lincoln, Jackson, Van Buren, and Wilson Elementary schools. Last year, I was able to focus only on Lincoln and Jackson. I am super excited to be in one building this year working with a staff and age group that I love. I have two children of my own, Amelia grade 8 and Gavin grade 6. My family is very involved with soccer, so you could say I fit the
complete bill of being a "Soccer Mom." Please feel free to stop by my office for a little chat, swing, or chocolate break!
Greetings! My name is Sally Feeney and I will be one of the teachers working with students who are English Language
Learners at Franklin, Edison, and Marshall Middle Schools. This is my first year working for the School District of

and Parker High Schools. It is very exciting for me to be a member of the teaching staff at Franklin Middle School and a
Falcon once again!
Hi, my name is Dan Bayreuther and I will be teaching one hour of Physical Education this year at Franklin. For the
remainder of the school day, I will teach Health and Physical Educatin at Marshall Middle School. This school year
will be my 31st year of teaching. I look forward to working with the Franklin Middle School students, parents, and
staff. I am really excited to work with Mr. Pajerski and Ms. Miller (two former student teachers at Madison Elementary). My family includes my wife (Debbie) who works at KANDU Industries, a son (Zach) who lives and works in
Appleton and a daugher (Haley) who attends UW_Oshkosh and is working towards earning her degree in Elementary and Special Education.
Hello, my name is Jenny Barmore and I have been teaching for 18 years. I live in Evansville, WI, with Nicole Miller
and my two boys, Benjamin (15) and Nicholas (12). In 1993 I graduated from UW-Whitewater with an English degree and a Journalism minor. I subbed for a year and then started my own cleaning company. I later fell into real estate but failed after realizing math was involved. Finally, I came full circle when I began substitute teaching in 1998
for the Oregon School District. I currently teach 8th grade Communication Arts at Franklin Middle School. This is
my 16th year with the School District of Janesville. I spent my first 14 years here in Room 132, a.k.a. "home." Last
year I was transferred to Parker High School but instead chose a 7th grade Communication Arts position at Marshall Middle School.
While the drive across town was scenic, I sure missed my moldy old room and moldier old friends and family. I am excited to be
back and hope I can ride this gig out here at Franklin like a younger, hipper, Thelma and Louise.

ARISE VIRTUAL ACADEMY HAS RELOCATED TO FRANKLIN MIDDLE SCHOOL
We would like to inform you of a change that will take place in the upcoming school year (20152016). Arise Virtual Academy (AVA) has relocated to Franklin Middle School (FMS) from its current location inside Jefferson Elementary School.
The reasons for the move are as follows:
1. Arise Virtual Academy has grown significantly over the past 8 years.
2. There is inadequate computer space at Jefferson, and we had to turn students away many times last
year.
3. We are estimating a 50% growth at AVA for the 2015-16 school year.
4. We believe having all students in one room will maximize student/teacher contact and improve our
efficiency with the students we serve.
The seniors from AVA will park at the far end of the staff parking lot. Arise Virtual Students will have
a dedicated entry point at the south end of the building. A secretary/receptionist will log individuals coming
into the building for Arise Virtual Academy. Students will enter the classroom closest to this entrance.
Franklin students will utilize this hallway for Tech Ed and Art classes, the only interaction FMS students and Arise students will have with each other is passing each other in the hallway. Staff will be present to
monitor the brief encounter. All safety precautions will be discussed with staff.
