Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
Faith’s Yield
La Cosecha de la Fe
Today’s readings and prayers focus on the end of time
when Jesus will return “with great power and glory.”
This truth can cause uneasiness as Daniel writes in the
Old Testament, “it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began.” It is wise to stop and reflect
on these readings which signal that the liturgical year is
drawing to a close. We are reminded of our mortality,
our inevitable death, and our immortality, our everlasting life. Each day is a dying. We are constantly moving
toward our death and final triumph. The Collect reminds
us that our confidence in the final triumph comes to us
through “the full and lasting happiness to serve with
constancy the author of all that is good.” Whenever we
acknowledge the Responsorial Psalm’s refrain, “You
are my inheritance, O Lord,” disquietude and anxiety
dissipate. We believe that Jesus hears each one of us
when we cry, “my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my
body, too abides in confidence; because you will not
abandon my soul to the netherworld.” This surety allows
us to welcome these “end of the year” readings that
remind us that each of our journeys will draw to a close.
The seasonal markers of harvest and dormant fields
call us to reflect on life’s cycle. Our time on earth is
temporary and Saint Paul reminds us in his letter to the
Hebrews that “Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins, and
took his seat forever at the right hand of God,” to open
heaven to all who believe and trust
in Him. It is with this unwavering
belief and trust that we joyously
proclaim, “You will show me the
path to life, the fullness of joys in
your
presence,
forever” (Responsorial Psalm).
(Salmo
Responsorial)

NOTICE TO All PARISHIONERS
In anticipation of the upcoming rainy season, Our Lady of
the Assumption Parish has arranged to have the 62-year
old church roof replaced during the next month. The work
will be done by Midwest Roofing, Inc. The existing roof
materials contain non-friable asbestos, which will be removed. The work will begin approximately November 15,
weather permitting, and the entire process is expected to
take several weeks.
The removal of the existing roof material will be done entirely at night. No abatement will be done while OLA
School and Religious Education classes are in session.
Workers will wear protective clothing, and will bag and
seal the materials on the roof, sending the bags down
chutes on the west side of the church, where they will be
moved to a truck and disposed of. The parish has contracted with a licensed independent observer to monitor
the entire removal process. He will be onsite during all
the work to ensure that safety procedures are followed. Air quality will be monitored throughout the process.
The installation of the new roof will take place next, working around scheduled masses and services in the
church. Some of this work will take place during the
school day. Sections of parking places near the church
may be reserved for work areas on some days. We anticipate no interruption of the school schedule, including attending morning masses.

There is no better time of year to review
the important family rules that help to
keep all children safe. It takes just a few
moments to review with your children
what to do in an emergency, who the
special and safe adults in their life are,
and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special occasion, can
be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt others, involve
any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at
OLA is part of a worldwide organization of lay Catholic men and women
who are committed to live and grow in their Christian faith
through prayer and personal involvement in charitable
works. The Society’s mission is accomplished through
parish and community-based groups called Conferences
(volunteers) and programs called “Special Works.” The
Society’s work includes any actions that promote the dignity of the person, alleviate suffering and distress, while
correcting the conditions that cause them. Here in the
Ventura area, the Society has provided for rental assistance, food, pharmacy and medical needs, utility bills,
lodging, clothing, as well as transportation. This weekend
a second collection will be taken up St. Vincent de Paul.
We here at Our Lady of the Assumption can proudly say
that 100% of the funds donated have been used to assist
those in need. If you are in need of assistance please call
the SVdP office at 642-4104 and make an appointment to
discuss your needs with one of our office Vincentians. Please leave a message if the phone is not answered and your call will be returned.
