GET READY The Letters of Paul to the
Thessalonians are among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the
belief of the entire early Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent.
Therefore, to devote time or attention to
anything else was foolish.
As time progressed, this fervor receded a
bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear
these readings about the coming endtimes, if we should take them to heart.
What should we do when we hear that the
day of the Lord will come upon us “like a
thief at night”? (1 Ts 5:2) Does this mean
we are to stop our long-range goalsetting,
get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college
education fund? Of course not. What it
does mean is that we need to change our
lives, living like children of the light and
illuminating the world around us with the
light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when
the details of our daily living become
unimportant, we will be ready to find our
peace and security in Christ Jesus.
Transform November into a Month of Thanksgiving
Very soon Americans will celebrate the Thanksgiving holidays; a me where so much is devoted to sumptuous meals
highlighted by turkey and pumpkin pie, traveling to and from the ancestral home, enjoying family, feas ng on le overs,
seeing a Thanksgiving Day parade and watching football.
For many of us, Thanksgiving Day is so full of ac vity that there is a tendency to forget what’s at the heart of
Thanksgiving, offering our thanks to God for the many gi s that have been bestowed upon us. Although some mes the reason for the holiday is forgo en in our secular culture today, good stewards of their life and faith recognize that Thanksgiving
should be directed primarily in God’s direc on.
Because the “busyness” of Thanksgiving Day can easily distract us from slowing down to a pace more suitable to
adequately expressing our gra tude to God, perhaps this November we might allow Thanksgiving to permeate our lives for
more than just a day. How about the en re month? Expressing gra tude is at the heart of good stewardship. So, let’s
dedicate a li le me each day in November to giving thanks for our blessings.
Begin with November 1 and 2, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Spend a few minutes each of those days thanking God
for all the people in your life who have gone before you. Then, each day therea er, set aside a few minutes to remember all
that God has given you and say “Thank you.” Take part of a day and walk or hike down a woodland path. Express your gra tude for the beauty of God’s autumn crea on.
Take a minute each day to thank the people in your life who ma er to you. Tell them you’re thankful for them. Drop
someone a note, place a short phone call or even text them! Telling people you’re thankful for them will enrich your life as
well as theirs. Make a point to a end at least one Mass outside the regular weekend Masses. Going to Mass on Thanksgiving morning is an excellent way to enrich that holiday. As a community of faith, we know that giving glory to God in this way
is an important aspect of our communal life of faith.
Transform the month of November into a month of Thanksgiving. If you do, you will find your celebra on of
Thanksgiving Day a more richer and fuller experience than you could have imagined. In fact, you might just discover that
your overall happiness with life improves. May this month of Thanksgiving be a me when we not only say “Thank You” to
God, family and neighbor, but a me when our hearts draw us much closer to the Lord.

Misa Bilingüe de: Acción de Gracias

Como ya es tradición, este día usted podrá traer un
platillo de su Mesa, el cual será bendecido por el
sacerdote. Favor de llevárselo de nuevo a casa
después de la bendición.
Transforme Noviembre en un Mes de Acción de Gracias
Muy pronto en Norteamérica se celebrará la fiesta de Acción de Gracias; un
tiempo que es dedicado primordialmente a las suntuosas cenas realzadas por el
pavo y la tarta de calabaza, a viajar del hogar ancestral, o hacia él, a disfrutar a la
familia, a deleitarse con los sobrantes de la cena viendo el desfile del Día de
Acción de Gracias y el fútbol.
Para muchos de nosotros, el Día de Acción de Gracias está tan lleno de
actividades que hay una tendencia a olvidar lo que está en el corazón de la Acción
de Gracias, ofrecer nuestro agradecimiento a Dios por los numerosos dones que
han sido derramados sobre nosotros. Aunque algunas veces la razón de la
celebración sea olvidada en nuestra cultura secular de hoy, los buenos
corresponsables de su vida y de su fe reconocen que la Acción de Gracias debe ser
guiada principalmente en dirección a Dios.
Como el ”ajetreo” del Día de Acción de Gracias puede distraernos fácilmente
de reducir la velocidad a un ritmo más conveniente para expresar adecuadamente
nuestra gratitud a Dios, tal vez este noviembre nosotros podamos permitir que la
Acción de Gracias impregne nuestras vidas no sólo por un día. ¿Qué tal todo el
mes? Expresar nuestra gratitud está en el corazón de la buena corresponsabilidad.
Por lo tanto, dediquemos un poco de tiempo cada día del mes de noviembre a dar
gracias por nuestras bendiciones.
Inicie con el 1º y el 2 de noviembre, el Día de Todos los Santos y el Día de los
Difuntos. Invierta algunos minutos cada uno de esos días agradeciendo a Dios por
todas las personas en su vida que se han ido antes que usted. Después, cada uno de
los días posteriores, aparte unos minutos para recordar todo lo que Dios le ha dado
y diga “Gracias.”
Tome una parte de un día y camine o vaya de excursión por un sendero
arbolado. Exprese su gratitud por la belleza de la creación de Dios en el otoño.
Tome un minuto cada día para agradecer por las personas en su vida que le
importan. Dígales que usted está agradecido por ellas. ¡Deje a alguien una nota,
hágale una llamada telefónica corta o envíele un mensaje de texto!
Decir a las personas que usted está agradecido por ellas enriquecerá tanto su
vida como la de ellas.Asegúrese de asistir al menos a una Misa además de
las Misas de los fines de semana. Ir a Misa la mañana del Día de Acción de
Gracias es una excelente manera de enriquecer esta celebración. Como comunidad
de fe, nosotros sabemos que dar gloria a Dios de esta manera es un aspecto
importante de nuestra vida de fe comunitaria. Transforme este mes de noviembre
en un mes de Acción de Gracias. Si lo hace, usted encontrará su celebración del
Día de Acción de Gracias como una experiencia más rica
y más plena de lo que usted había imaginado. De hecho, usted puede descubrir
que su felicidad en general con la vida, mejora. Que este mes de Acción de
Gracias sea un tiempo en el que nosotros no solamente digamos “Gracias”
a Dios, a la familia y al vecino, sino un tiempo en el que nuestros corazones sean
atraídos más cerca del Señor.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential
to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed,
while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of
the Word. Some, such as the Armenians,
even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by
which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint
the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible
for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy.
In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book
that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for
the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species.
While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks
who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar
way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second
form required a confession beforehand.
Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone understood as being an essential part of penance.
