Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Why a Jubilee of Mercy? Pope Francis writes We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective. Jesus’ transformation of water into wine is a “sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus’ person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.” During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God’s mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Gloria Dei Choir will sing Healy Willan’s setting of “Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One.” The text is the familiar passage from the second chapter of The Song of Solomon (2:10-12): Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away; For lo, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear upon the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come. This text, often read or sung at weddings, likens God’s love for His people to that of a bridegroom for his new bride. Today’s first reading from Isaiah features similar imagery and the Gospel reading relates the story of Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana. Composer Healey Willan (1880-1968) was born in England and emigrated to Canada in 1913, where he composed over 800 works, primarily for the church where he served as organist/choirmaster. In the words of one biographer, “His music represents a unique and beautiful combination of styles: both an homage to the sacred music of five centuries ago and a reflection of the innovations of the Romantic/post-Romantic period in which he lived.” As to his own provenance, Willan joked that he was “English by birth, Canadian by adoption, Irish by extraction, and Scotch by absorption.” During Communion, the choir will sing Craig Kingsbury’s “Thee We Adore,” a short anthem based on “Adoro Te Devote,” a 13th Century Eucharistic hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas. It is believed this prayer was written as a personal devotion; the plainchant melody associated with the text was added several hundred years later. The text has been translated numerous times into English verse; Kingsbury chose the beautiful 1852 verse translation by James Russell Woodford: Thee we adore, O hidden Savior, thee, who in thy sacrament dost deign to be; both flesh and spirit at thy presence fail, yet here thy presence we devoutly hail. O blest memorial of our dying Lord, who living bread to men doth here afford! O may our souls forever feed on thee, and thou, O Christ, forever precious be. Fountain of goodness, Jesus, Lord and God, cleanse us, unclean, with thy most cleansing blood; increase our faith and love, that we may know the hope and peace which from thy presence flow. O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see, may what we thirst for soon our portion be, to gaze on thee unveiled, and see thy face, the vision of thy glory and thy grace. Craig Kingsbury (b. 1952) sang with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and served as organist at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes before moving to Oregon in 1991 to become Senior Music Editor of Oregon Catholic Press, for whom he has edited and arranged countless pieces for liturgical use. Kingsbury’s musical style has much in common with Willan, though with a more contemporary use of harmony; each writes with a keen awareness of earlier stylistic models and with special attention to voiceleading and melodically driven vocal lines. —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director Gloria Dei Choir Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Page 9 Lord, grant your eternal peace to: Señor Dios, concédeles tu eterna paz a: Chuck Howe Rosa Castro Martinez Isidro Boites Father, we pray for healing and strength for: Dios Padre, rezamos por a sanación y fuerza de: (father of Tim Howe) (wife of Angel Martinez) (husband of Beatriz Boites) Sam Corrales Ana Garcia Chris Gonzales Morales, Jr. El Señor es mi pastor, nada me falta.
