ReϔlectionofToday’sGospel~Matthew22:34-40
As the opening of this episode indicates, the Pharisees
have come to Jesus having heard that he has confounded the Sadducees, a rival religious faction to
the Pharisees, in an argument over the resurrection of
the dead. In that exchange, Jesus came down on the
side of the Pharisees, who believed in such a resurrection, accusing the Sadducees of knowing neither the
Scriptures nor the power of God. The Pharisees
haven’t come to try to “trip him up” but to “test” his
wisdom further, as one would any rabbi. The question
Jesus is asked by the scholar in the law — “Which
commandment of the law is the greatest?” — seems
not to be aimed at tricking him or leading him into a
rhetorical trap. He responds in a way that wouldn’t
have surprised a faithful Jew. Jesus’ answer is, likewise,
straightforward, yet magisterial. He answers with
authority and without indictment, as is the case when
he knows a questioner is sincere. Jesus is really describing the attitude of one who has entered into the
kingdom of God, which is precisely God’s sovereignty
in the human soul, by virtue of this covenant faithfulness. This passage demonstrates the continuity of
Jesus and his message with his, and our, Jewish roots.

HOME Campaign Update
Since our update in last weekend’s bulletin, the Home
campaign team has secured gifts and pledges of
$4.4 million or 40% of our campaign goal! Every gift
brings us one step closer to making our vision a reality!
One of the biggest challenges we are facing is trying
to contact parishioners who have disconnected their
home telephone numbers or have recently moved.
While we are confident that we will reach our goal,
we don’t want anyone to miss out on a chance to
participate! So, if you have recently changed phone
numbers or moved, please contact the parish office
at 865.588.0249. If you have not been contacted and
are ready to make a gift, please contact Mary Mac
Wilson at 865.558.4111 or [email protected].
For more information about the campaign,
be sure to visit the campaign website:

ALL SOULS DAY MASS - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND
“You shall love the Lord your God, with
all your heart, with all your soul, and
with all your mind.” We are first called
to that relationship with God, a relationship which
acknowledges God’s love of us, and results in our own
love of the Lord. That is where stewardship must begin
with each of us - through developing a loving bond with
God. However, Jesus then explains to us how we must
relate to one another: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Many misinterpret Christ’s admonition to mean that we
must love ourselves first. He was not saying that we must
love ourselves before we love anyone else. He was saying nonetheless that our focus as stewards needs to be
on serving and loving others. The good steward respects,
regards, and loves others as he or she might expect to be
treated. Love and stewardship are very much the same each strives to put others before our own interests.

Bishop Stika Statement on Amendment One
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
If you have a member of your immediate family
currently deployed overseas with the US Military, please
send us their name and a photo so we may include
them in our prayers and post them in the Narthex.
Email the photos to [email protected] or you
may also drop them off at the Sacred Heart Cathedral
office, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Bishop Stika will celebrate the 11:00 a.m. Mass on
November 2nd at the Cathedral honoring our brave
men and woman defending our country.
One of the great privileges of living in a democracy is
the right of its citizens to vote. Although the Catholic
Church will never identify itself with any political
community or system, we can and must speak up in
support of moral issues. One such issue that we as
Catholics will have an opportunity to vote on
November 4th is Amendment One. This amendment is
neither a Republican nor Democrat issue, but a moral
and life issue of greatest magnitude. A yes vote on
Amendment One, a prolife amendment, would
neutralize the extreme interpretation taken by the
Tennessee State Supreme Court in 2000 in which they
declared that our State Constitution guarantees the
right to an abortion. Passage of this Amendment would
restore back to the voter the “life” decisions that were
taken from them by the state court decision. For this
reason, I and my brother Bishops in Nashville and
Memphis wholeheartedly ask for your support for “life”
by voting for “Yes on One” this November 4th.
