Palm Sunday of The Passion of The Lord
Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal
entrance of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew
21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in
His path, before His arrest on Holy Thursday
and His Crucifixion on Good Friday . It thus
marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final
week of Lent, and the week in which
Christians celebrate the mystery of their
salvation through Christ's Death and
Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Monthly Offering
A Note from Father Ringley
Congratulations to our oldest parishioner, Marie Melisi, who will complete her one hundred and second
year on Holy Thursday. The Ladies Guild has offered the sanctuary candle at St. Patrick’s for her intentions.
Thanks to Raymond Kulacz, Fr. Sean’s dad for completing the work on the altar gates at St. Patrick’s,
and for fabricating rolling stands for the Easter candles.
The altar server robes at St. Augustine have been laundered by some helpful volunteers.
This Sunday evening at 7:00 pm at St. Augustine’s church David McCaffrey and the Saint Cecilia Society
Choir will present The Seven Last Words of Christ, A Sacred Cantata by Theodore Dubois. The concert
is free and open to all.
A blessed Holy Week to all. If you are not familiar with the Holy Week Liturgies, and have the
opportunity to come, please do so. The bishop will be at St. Augustine on Thursday and Saturday. The
schedule is in the bulletin and on the website at www.thecathedralparish.org. By the way, traffic is
increasing on the website, especially on Saturdays. This suggests that more people are interested in our
Mass schedule in order to visit us. This is good.
May God bless you all.

Veiling Statues in Lent
It has been the custom of the Roman Church from the 17 th Century to the present to veil crosses, statues, and images of the
saints (except the Stations of the Cross) from the 5th Sunday of Lent until Easter. The crosses are unveiled after the
unveiling of the cross during the Good Friday liturgy, while the other images are uncovered after the Gloria of the Easter
Vigil.
While the historical roots of the custom seem uncertain, we may consider three interpretations of the practice. First,
consider a mystical interpretation from 19th Century liturgical scholar Dom Gueranger. To prepare Himself for the events
of His Passion, the Lord hid Himself from the rage of the Jewish authorities. So now, He is “hidden” from the world as we
prepare to commemorate these mysteries.
This interpretation is derived from the gospel passage traditionally read on the 5th Sunday of Lent, specifically John 8:46-59.
At this point in His relationship with the Jewish authorities our Lord has revealed His divinity to them, concluding His
explanation with the words “…I AM”. At this, “…they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went
out of the temple”.
A spiritual interpretation of the custom is also possible according to Gueranger. We usually think of the cross as a symbol
of Christ’s victory over sin and death. But at this stage in His life, and for those who followed Him, the cross is a sign of
humiliation; the worst imaginable death for the worst imaginable crimes (blasphemy). In this sense we try to shield our
Lord from this humiliation, or to hide it even from ourselves. In His Passion, the Lord’s divinity was obscured by this
humiliation, and his humanity was obscured by the disfiguring wounds of the Passion.
Third, a psychological explanation: veiling the cross and statues actually draws more attention to them than does leaving
them unveiled. The bride at her wedding wears a veil. What sense does this make if everyone already knows what she
looks like? The point of the veil is not to hide her from us, but to draw our attention to her. The mystery intrigues and
attracts us. The liturgy itself is presented to us as a series of veils. The priest is veiled in his vestments; the altar is veiled by
a cloth; the chalice is covered with a veil until it is to be used; the tabernacle veils the Blessed Sacrament from our sight.
Incense veils the entire sanctuary. The most impressive veil is that which the Lord Himself uses to present Himself to us,
and hide Himself from us: The accidents of bread and wine are veils which hide the mystery of the substantial presence of
the Lord in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
It is clear that these veils make it possible for us to “see” the God whom we cannot see. When all these veils are eliminated
from the liturgy we risk creating an atmosphere in which there is nothing to see, nothing to intrigue us, and nothing to attract
us.
Consider, finally, that the apostles “looked at” the Lord’s divinity everyday for three years, but could not “see” it until He
“showed” it to them by means of signs and symbols at His Transfiguration (cf MT 17:1-8).
The following note has appeared in the bulletin every week since 7/13/14. Unfortunately we have had
to deny numerous requests for Sponsor Certificates. If you know someone who want to be a sponsor
make sure they have this information:
Those requesting a Sponsor Certificate for Baptism or Confirmation must be active registered parishioners, attending
Mass every Sunday at either St. Patrick or St. Augustine and assisting with the material needs of the Church, each
according to his/her abilities. A sponsor must be over 16 years of age, have received all Sacraments of initiation, and, if
married, be married according to the laws of the Catholic Church. You may call the office to make an appointment to
meet with Father Ringley or Father Sean at least 3 months before the date the certificate is needed.
(See Catechism of the Catholic Church 2042; Code of Canon Law 874).
Marriage Preparation Classes For Newly Engaged, Civilly Married or Co-Habitating Couples
We are launching our new cycle of classes for those preparing for marriage, those who are civilly married without the
benefit of the Sacrament of Matrimony, and those who are living together without the benefit of either a Sacramental
or legal marriage. The 3 class cycle will be taught by the priests and deacons. While all who are to be married at The
Cathedral Parish will be asked to take the class, anyone is welcome. The classes are designed to help establish strong
foundations for a happy and holy Catholic marriage. Contact the parish office to register!

Defending Our Religious Liberty #161
The Catholic Church has always been a provider
and advocate for accessible, affordable and lifeaffirming health care. Had the federal government
made accommodations to protect religious freedom
for all Americans, dozens of lawsuits filed around
the country challenging it could have been avoided.
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your
opposition to the federal health care mandate by
calling U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let
her know that the mandate is in violation of our
First Amendment right to religious freedom.
Parish Nurse Corner
As we continue this series about Palliative Care, this information may help you as a parishioner become more comfortable about discussing Palliative Care with your physician.
When undergoing treatments that may not cure a serious
illness, there are measures the doctor can focus on to prevent or relieve suffering while helping the patient and loved
ones cope with the stress of illness. Among these measures
are relief of pain and addressing problems with breathing,
fatigue, depression and loss of appetite, to mention just a
few. Palliative Care is a specialty and there are resources
right here in our community to support quality of life.
Regarding Background Checks and Social Security Numbers…
All volunteers who work in scheduled contact with children are required to complete a criminal background
check every five (5) years. All volunteers who do not work in scheduled contact with children are required to
complete a background check every ten (10) years.
In any case where a volunteer does not provide their social security number, they are required to provide a date
of birth on the authorization form. The background check will not include a Social Security trace. However, if
multiple results return with the same name and date of birth, the social security number is REQUIRED for
identity purposes to consider that person eligible for volunteering. Without a social security number the person is
not considered eligible for volunteering.

a hacerlo.
